Good afternoon Wanguri community

With only one week to go until the end of term it is hard to believe how fast the term has gone. It has certainly been an action packed term with our grand finale being our Athletics events and twilight carnival next week.

Twilight Carnival

Please remember that on Tuesday 17 June our school hours have changed to accommodate our Twilight Carnival. School will commence at 12pm and finish at 6pm. There will be no supervision of students before 12 pm. OSHC will provide before school care from 7.30 am to 12 pm for students who normally attend OSHC. There are also limited spaces available for students who do not usually attend the Wanguri OSHC Program. Bookings are essential for all placements. I am really looking forward to my first Wanguri Athletics Carnival and meeting with you all. Mrs Dolan has been able to secure the assistance of a group of US Marines for our Athletics week. I am sure the students (and the parents) will welcome them to our school. A program of events will be sent out shortly.

Improvements to our school

In our last newsletter I detailed the improvements to our infrastructure that have been prioritised by our School Council. As I explained, one of our improvements is the installation of the ‘Big Ass Fans’ to our undercover assembly area. For those of you who aren’t aware, ‘Big Ass Fans’ is the actual name of the company that supplies the large fans. I have provided the link to the website for those of you who are interested. www.bigassfans.com

This week we received notification that we have been successful in our request to upgrade our stage so we can use it as a Music teaching space therefore freeing up the room next to the OSHC. This will be an exciting development for our school. We have also been actively working on the upgrade to our Preschool play equipment and getting quotes and ideas to make it state-of-the-art for our Preschoolers. There has even been talk of creating a dry river bed ☺Wanguri Primary school is certainly moving ahead into the future.

Flexi Schools

Next term we will be implementing on line ordering for our Canteen. Flexi Schools is an on line ordering system where parents and students can order their recess and lunches on line. No more hunting for loose change, last minute ordering and students loosing their change. You can even order the whole week at once or weeks in advance. You can order via computer, iPad or phone.

HATS, HATS, HATS!!! Over the past three weeks there has been an average of 30 hats per week found by our cleaning staff on school grounds after the students have gone home. All named hats are returned to students but there is a pattern emerging with many of the same hats being found week after week. Some students are not taking very good care of their hats and consequently missing out on play time at lunch and recess. Please help your child by ensuring they have a hat in their bag everyday. Thank you.

Girraween Open Day Excursion

The Sustainability Ambassadors went on an excursion to Girraween Primary School. We sold snake bean seeds and put up a stall with lots of posters about our community. We had lots of fun and sold a lot of bean seeds. We took lots of photos and got some ideas for things to do at our school. We learnt about recycling and we saw very creative things that we can do at Wanguri Primary School.

Jemma and Rowan

I liked everything. There was a museum of live disasters, they had heaps of craft to show us and they had computers with power points. I also thought the bird feeders were cool. They were bees made out of a big tin can and fly screen for the wings. I had lots of FUN!! Jessica

The trip to Girraween was an amazing experience. My favourite part was looking at the AMAZING plant structures. It gave us brilliant ideas for the school garden. It was a fun experience. Quigley

My favourite bit in Girraween was learning about hydroponics and aquaponics. Hydroponics are plants grown in water instead of soil, and aquaponics are when you add fish to the water. Isaac

My favourite thing at Girraween was the aquaponics and hydroponics. They were smartly laid out and it was interesting. David

I loved how they used dead batteries for fun games. James

My favourite thing was trying the buffalo burgers, they were really juicy. Grace

My favourite things about the excursion were the little baby piglets, goats and cows. I also liked the displays, especially the butterfly farm. Imandi

The tyre garden was the best because there were couches made out of recycled tyres. Mia

My favourite thing at Girraween was the butterfly garden because the butterflies were very

beautiful. I also liked the pigs. There were two black ones and one was white with black

spots. Hermione

One more week of school and we have the month long holidays in front of us. I am sure we are all looking forward to the rest, however, the children can get restless after a few days off and then creeps in the “I’m bored”, “there’s nothing to do” comments. If this is the case, jump onto the DCO website www.defence.gov.au/dco/nt.htm and have a look under events and news for exciting things to do.

Another option to keep the children busy this holiday period is search the Darwin Waterfront website at www.waterfront.nt.gov.au under the events tab. The Waterfront always has awesome school holiday activities during the holidays.

The local libraries also offer a good break. They have daily activities for children and you can relax with a book yourself. Search under the “What’s On” tab at www.darwin.nt.gov.au/libraries. These are just a few ideas for you to start with.

Remember to inform me of any changes in your circumstances; such as deployments, attachments, exercises and/or postings. It is a very busy time of year for all Defence personnel.

Have a super relaxing holiday and we will see everyone for Semester 2 on 22 July 2014.

Please stay safe. If you are travelling by car remember, Stop, Revive, Survive.

Enjoy

News from the Sports DeskNews from the Sports DeskNews from the Sports DeskNews from the Sports Desk School Cluster Teams

Congratulations to Kurt Parriman, who has been selected to represent the NT at the Australian Rugby Championships in Sydney. Unfortunately it is on at the same time as the school camp to Canberra. When tough decisions like that need to be made, you know life is good! Great work Kurt, well deserved!

Wanguri Athletics Carnival

A booklet will be sent home to all families this week. We have 10 US Marines attending our morning Field Events and our Twilight carnival!!! How amazing is that? A big thanks to Rachel Dolan for making her crazy ideas come to fruition. Picture this: 10 US Marines vs our parents in a tug of war…would we need up to 50?(No offence!)

Teeth / Sugar / Acid

All the Year 5 and 6 students were impressed with the Oral Health facts they learnt last Friday, from Aislinn of Laser Dentistry, Casuarina Village. A BIG THANKYOU to Aislinn who came on her day off and brought a bag of goodies for each student, which included a toothbrush and toothpaste.

Did you know?

• You should wait 30 minutes before brushing your teeth after consuming soft drink. • Swimming pool acid is the highest acid level our teeth are exposed to. • Sugar in food combines with the plaque on teeth to become acid, which rots teeth. • Only use a pea sized amount of paste on your toothbrush. • Never swallow toothpaste. • Rinse your mouth with water after drinking or eating sugary or acidic foods. • Change your tooth brush every 3 months. • Juice is highly acidic, eat the fresh fruit instead. • Water is the best drink choice.

Children are all too often injured by fireworks each year on Territory Day. A good way to enjoy fireworks on Territory Day is to attend one of the NT Government funded public fireworks displays around the NT.

If you do plan to use your own fireworks, remember to follow all the safety instructions to reduce the chances of injury from fireworks to your family and friends.

An estimated eight kids a day are injured by trampolines in Australia, and hundreds of Australian children are taken to hospital every year for trampoline-related injuries. Don’t let your trampoline spring a nasty surprise.

The ACCC, Kidsafe and state consumer protection agencies have teamed up with Olympian trampolinist Blake Gaudry to help parents and carers keep trampolining safe for kids.

As part of the campaign, there is a fun safety video and fact card with a five-step safety checklist of trampolines available from the campaign site www.productsafety.gov.au./trampolinesafety
