Good afternoon to the Wanguri Primary community

We are nearly half way through Term 1 and the students and teachers have settled into their daily routines. Life is so lovely here at Wanguri.

Staffing

We welcome back our lovely Year 3 teacher, Michaela McNair who has returned to us this week. Mrs Pat Grono, Transition teacher, is currently on extended leave. Rachita Jain is replacing Mrs Grono for the next three weeks at this stage. I would like to thank all the parents for their patience and support during this time of change. News from the Sports DeskNews from the Sports DeskNews from the Sports DeskNews from the Sports Desk Cluster Day Sport

Students in Year 4-6 were asked to select 2 sports they would like to represent the school in this year and participate at a local, regional level. Our first event was cricket, but less than half of the team returned notices and we were forced to cancel our involvement. This was very disappointing for the students who made the commitment and followed through with returning the permission form and money. I am keen to deter this situation by asking parents to be diligent in asking for notes and returning forms and money for excursions by the due date. Thanking you in advance.

Cost of Cluster Day

The cost to attend an event will be a flat rate of $10: $5 for hire of venue and $5 for transport.

Hats and Shoes

Hats and appropriate runners or trainers is imperative for your child’s safety. Our sun-smart school policy requires hats every day and they are an important part of the physical education program. Please ensure hats are in bags Monday mornings, after being washed on the weekend. I have suggested to students they leave their hats at school all week.

HPE Australian Curriculum

The Health and Physical Education (HPE) Australian Curriculum has been made available this week for teachers throughout Australia to begin understanding the format and content. Having worked at a national level on this curriculum over the past 12 months, we are lucky enough to have programs in place that already reflect the new curriculum. The new curriculum has a large focus on mental health and is aimed at students developing life-long habits of physical exercise and making positive nutritional choices. Our Wanguri program will offer some exciting and innovative programs in meeting the curriculum expectations.

Healthy Lunch Boxes

One of the Australian Curriculum: HPE focus areas is food and nutrition. Its aim is for our students to develop the habit of choosing fresh fruit and vegetables over processed food, home cooked food over takeaway and water over soft drink. This is aiming to set our future generations up for success in the realm of personal health. In each newsletter there will be a recipe suggestion, a website link or a new app you can use to help make the switch to less processed and more fresh food.

Lunch box Variation:

 Chicken Platter (source - www.taste.com.au)

A piece of chicken left over from last night’s dinner, cut long lengths of carrot and celery and any other vegetable your child may prefer. Arrange like a platter in the lunch box.

FoodSwitch App (My favourite app ever)

A free app that allows you to scan barcodes and you receive green, orange and red lights as to the nutritional value of the item. It also breaks down each component of the food such as sugars, fats and sodium levels. It also suggests a variety of other brands for the same type of product. For example if I was scanning porridge, it would give me a list of other porridges that are healthier or as good as the brand I had scanned. It even includes no-name brands as options. My daughter and I spent nearly 2 hours in the supermarket the first time we used it, we were so fascinated! We certainly ate well that week!

Yours in Sport

We had the DCO Welcome to Darwin Expo last fortnight. It was a wonderful afternoon and we saw many faces from Wanguri Primary School attend. There were many stalls with loads of information of what Darwin has to offer as well as jumping castles, face painting, dancing and army vehicles to explore for the children. Thank you to all that supported such a great event and we hope to see you there next year.

If you have just been posted in and are concerned about your child/children’s academic progress, you may want to investigate the Education Assistance Scheme (EAS). The EAS is aimed at minimising the disruption to a child’s schooling caused as a result of a Defence posting. You can access tutoring for your child/children and have Defence reimburse you within the first 18 months of enrolment at their new school. There is an application process and all of the guidelines can be found at PACMAN Vol 2 Chap 8 Part 4, by following this link: http://www.defence.gov.au/dpe/pac/ .If you wish to access the scheme, please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or if you simply want to have your forms filled in and certified by the teacher or school principal.

We are starting the Defence Kids Club next week (week 6). We will be having the club each term with many exciting programs for

the Defence Students to participate in. A note will be coming home shortly on what is instore for this term’s club.
