L-R Kiri Kerr, Eve Timms, Sarah Chong, Hiro Kojo Saturday evening 15 March saw fifty mothers and daughters at our Annual Mother Daughter Night for an Indian cook-off. It was a very enjoyable evening with prizes going to Louise Wilson Year 9 and Krystel Leung Year 7. Well done to the following participants – Andrea and Mrs Daners, Satiya and Mrs Seymour, Amy (Wasapatkorn) and Mrs Limpairojana, Senara and Mrs Perera, Esther and Mrs Barnes, Isabella and Mrs Flint, Kimberley and Ms Steel, Krystel and Mrs Leung, Caitlin and Mrs Cubie, Kristen and Mrs Tiang, Summer and Mrs Guo, Asha and Mrs Hossain, Peoly and Mrs Gunaratne, Jasmin and Mrs Borsovszky, Sunaina and Mrs Salagame, Louise and Dr Sadek, Jolynn and Mrs Zheng, Keerthi and Mrs Pilli, Elizabeth and Mrs Rawnsley, Lily and Mrs Henke, Meggie and Mrs Guo, Jessica and Mrs Lee, Karina, Alisha and Mrs Mathias, Mrs Huang and Eeasha, Meha and Mrs Batra. Daisy Ou Year 12 will be performing a 45 minute repertoire for a 1 hour radio broadcast on Wednesday 1 April from 1-2pm on Fine Music 102.5 FM. She was chosen as one of 16 semi-finalists in the state for the 2014 Fine Music Young Virtuouso Awards. http://www.finemusicfm.com/young-performers-award.html Hopefully you will have time to listen! Congratulations to our Swimming Squad who are now off to the State Finals! We are very proud of your achievements! Please read Mrs Coggins’ article in this edition of the TORCH. Dora Tong Year 7 will be playing the Chinese Zither at the Hornsby Harmony Day on Sunday in Coronation St Hornsby at 11.25am. Please see the attached details. Congratulations to the following members of our community who will be receiving Pride of Workmanship Awards for their service to Public Education on Monday 7 April at the Hornsby Rotary Awards Night – Mrs Robyn Riches, Mrs Faye Roberts and Mr Ross Horsburgh (P and C President 2011 -2013). Zone Swimming – Wednesday 12th March Congratulations to the 28 students (listed below) who represented Hornsby Girls at the Zone Swimming Carnival. As a result of the combined efforts of all the Hornsby swimmers, Hornsby placed 3rd overall on the day, behind Riverside and Cheltenham. Well done to all swimmers, this result is a huge achievement.

Regional Swimming – Tuesday 18th March

This year we had 8 students qualify to represent the

Met North West Zone at the Regional Swimming

Carnival.

These girls competed in the following events:

Sarah Chong (12yrs) – 50m Freestyle, 100m

Breaststroke, 100m Freestyle, 100m Backstroke

Hiro Kojo (13yrs) – 50m Freestyle, 100m Freestyle,

100m Backstroke, 100m Breaststroke, 200m

Freestyle Michelle Lokugamage (16yrs) –

100mBreaststroke Carrina Lee (17yrs) – 50m

Freestyle, 100m Freestyle, 100m Breaststroke,

100m Butterfly, 100m Backstroke, 200m Individual

Medley, 200m Freestyle Hiro Kojo, Michelle Lokugamage, Carrina Lee, Soo Bin Lee

Our two relay teams included:

13 years 4x50m Relay team – Sarah Chong, Kiri Kerr, Hiro Kojo, Eve Timms

All age 6x50m Relay team – Sarah Chong, Hiro Kojo, Grace Roberts, Soo Bin Lee, Michelle Lokugamage,

Carrina Lee

Both relay teams had enormous success at this carnival with the 13 years team placing 3rd and the All age

team finishing in 1st place.

FUN WITH VOLLEYBALL This term Hornsby Girls High School students have been involved in playing some

Invitational Volleyball matches, Friday after school, against Pymble Ladies College.

In recent years HGHS Teams have participated in an invitational competition held at Barker College

(unfortunately the competition did not run this year). The following Year 12 students have represented

Hornsby Girls in Volleyball since Year 7! Elisa Lai, Alex Motbey, Carissa Yu and Rachel Wang. Congratulations

Year 7 Shakespeare

On Monday March 24 the Year 7 Shakespeare Competition finals were held in the school hall. Some excellent

acting and creativity were on display. A big congratulations to the 12 students who were the finalists from

each Year 7 class. The winners, Josephine Collins, Mihn Tran and Jolynn Zheng and Nauleen Kaur will now

compete in the 7-10 Grand Final on April 10.

Adventurous Journey - Bronze Test, 23 - 24 April 2014 Students participating in the Test Adventurous Journey are reminded that the Journey starts at the end of Rosemead Road, Hornsby and finishes at the oval on Hill St., off Berowra Waters Rd., Berowra. Please be aware the camp finishes at 2pm.

There will be meetings for all those participating in the Bronze Training and Practice Expedition in Week 11. Details will be on the Daysheet. Details for the September Adventurous Journeys have not yet been received from Somerset Outdoor Learning. As soon as they are received, dates will be published in The Torch.

Building Student Parent Relationships A program conducted by KYDS (Ku-ring gai Youth Development Service) has been offered to our school . This four week program is fully subsidised and will be free of charge to participating families. The program "Emotional and Social Experiences within the Asian Community" is a workshop based program utilising cultural strengths and qualities to help build resilience in adolescents and practical strategies for parents. The program consists of 3 student sessions and one parent workshop and will be held at school during Term 2. If you are interested please contact Mrs Kathy Marriott Head Teacher Student Wellbeing for more information.
