The feelings of rapture as the end of an era draws nigh tempered by the harsh reality that this also brings their final VCE examinations closer. We wish our students well for their remaining time at St Brigid’s and hope that their focus and effort never wane from the ultimate purpose of many long years of secondary education. It is an exciting time as we bring one school year to an end while concurrently planning for 2019. It was most pleasing to see our Unit 3/4 students actively engaged in extra classes, seminars and trial examinations during these holidays. The feedback from the staff who supervised these examinations was of excellent student application with the key now being to focus on the feedback offered and to continue to complete practice examinations and trial essays. Successful students will complete at least 10 trial papers in each study they undertake. From today the students have 9 school days remaining and I wish them well as their 13 years of formalised school educational experience draws to a close. I thank VCE Coordinator, John Lowes for his organisation of the trial examinations over the holidays and to the many staff who assisted with the supervision. FETE DAY Our Catholic Missions College Fete was an outstanding success. As a whole school event we, in a tangible way, bear witness to the Gospel messages of justice and equality. Just under $2000 was raised and will be used by Catholic Missions to provide, support or educate communities through long-term development programs focusing on key areas such as health and hygiene, water supply and sanitation, housing, teaching of job skills and environmental awareness. Many thanks to Lesley Lannen and the VCAL students for their organisation of this fete and to our homerooms who supported the event with their stalls and activities. STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT Congratulations to the following students on their achievements: - After a successful season umpiring with the Ballarat Football Umpires Association, Year 12 student, Sebastian Dalgleish has been invited to trial over summer to get onto the VFL development squad.

Dear Parents,

Fourth term brings mixed emotions to our Year 12 students.

FETE DAY

Our Catholic Missions College Fete was an outstanding success.

STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT

Congratulations to the following students on their achievements:

- After a successful season umpiring with the Ballarat Football Umpires Association, Year 12 student, Sebastian Dalgleish has been invited to trial over summer to get onto the VFL development squad.

- The Western Bulldogs’ under-16 Next Generation Academy girls’ squad was announced with Ella Friend (Year 9) and Kyra Clarke (Year 10) being selected.

- Rachelle Ough (Yr 10) was awarded the Student Citizen Award on behalf of the Order of Australia Association, Horsham Branch. This award was presented to Rachelle for displaying outstanding community spirit through her involvement in a range of volunteer activities.

- To Jackson Brand (Yr 10) who has graduated from his second year with the Western Bulldogs Leadership Project and the Social Enterprise Project.

YEAR 10 RETREAT

Our Year 10 students are currently preparing for their three day Year 10 immersion-style retreat. Based in the City of Melbourne, our students will be provided with a unique opportunity to engage with groups of disadvantaged and marginalised people and also be given an opportunity to discover cultural aspects of Melbourne. In addition to engaging with people from different walks of life, the Retreat also exposes our students to the social and cultural perspective of the impact of various events on the development of Australia, with visits to places and organisations of historical importance.

COUGHLIN PARK REDEVELOPMENT

St Brigid’s College along with all of the Coughlin Park user groups are endeavouring to raise funds to install a picket fence around the ground. With the ground currently undergoing a total resurface, this is a unique opportunity to establish the venue one of the best, if not the best in the region. Individual pickets are being sold with your name and a dedicated logo, including the option of the school logo, to fund the project and the purchase is a fully tax-deductible donation, so it's win win! For more info checkout the fundraising page at the Australian Sports Foundation. https://asf.org.au/projects/coughlin-park-management-committee/

SUNSMART

Our clear expectation is that all students must own a College hat and wear this hat at recess and lunch-times. I urge parents to ensure that their children possess an approved hat or purchase one from Lowes in the Plaza. These hats are not meant to be a “fashion statement” but a functional protection against the sun.

DEEPEST SYMPATHY

We offer our prayerful support to the following families: the Winfield family on the recent death of Val Winfield, Grand-mother of Sophie (Yr 8) and Mother of Dean (Chair of our Advisory Council) and to the Mibus family on the recent death of Betty Hughes, Grandmother of Noah (Yr 10). Our prayers and thoughts are with you all at this time.

COLLEGE ADVISORY COUNCIL

The AGM of our College Advisory Council will be held in the boardroom on Wednesday, October 17th commencing at 7.00pm.

Yours in the community of St Brigid’s College

Peter Gutteridge Principal

We Need Your Support

The Boomerang Project The Boomerang Bags is a community project dealing with the issue of plastic bag pollution.

The project is about having fun and being creative while at the same time providing a free and sustainable alternative to plastic bags. Shoppers can borrow if they need a bag rather than using plastic bags. There are 35 boomerang bags committees across Australia and they have produced over 28,000 bags, which equals around 14 million plastic bags being replaced.

St Brigid’s College is supporting the Horsham Branch by organising the donation of fabric that can be used to produce the bags. We are seeking donations of sheets, curtains, doona covers and any other strong cotton or polyester fabric that can be used to make the bags. (Please no stretch fabric).

All donations can be left at the front office.
