As you are all aware Circus 2016 started with the first circus committee meeting; the third Tuesday of February 2015 underthe direction of Circus Director Don Brockman. The Chief Rabban’s responsibility as far as circus 2016 goes acts as thepotentate because it is his circus after the first of the following year in this case 2016. My involvement was basically toinsure fraternal smoothness in operations and to somewhat emphasize as always the need for continuity and speed. office staff. By the third quarter many of the nobles were selling tickets. Numerous members of the clown unit along withmany other nobles were selling tickets, one liners, activity ads, sponsorships, and Mom and Dad’s donations. One of the biggeststumbling blocks that was overcome by all came in the second half of the year. Ticket sales were down, we lacked momentum. Atabout the same time Bruce Pendleton joined the circus committee as the assistant circus director. We had to get closer to the pointof sale with these tickets. This caused a constant network of phone calling by myself, Don Brockman and Bruce Pendleton toeveryone possible that seemed to be challenged or passionate by the selling of tickets ,ads, one liners ,poster distribution, sponsorships and Mom and Dad’s efforts . This led to a lot of nobles picking up monies from circus patrons, bringing the moneyin to the circus ticket sales office and then delivering the tickets. Some of this led to Don, Bruce and Myself being the go betweenfor said nobles and doing some of the delivery of tickets and pickup of monies to assure the momentum and continuity and at thesame time freeing up these passionate volunteers to keep going and do more. This was done along with the tickets we and a wholelot of other nobles sold ourselves. At that point the circus ticket sales office was rolling, we had a momentum going. We all knowthat the Mom and Dad’s efforts were greater than what we have seen in years due to mailings and phone calling for nobleresponse to flyers sent earlier in the year. The Mom and Dad’s efforts were spear headed by Bruce Pendleton, Kurt Stacey andJean Ramsey. Early in 2015 RWB Noble Rich Dickersheid Grand Marshal of the Grand Lodge of Ohio called me and endorsed amasonic parade prior to the opening of the Friday night show. Numerous lodges and appendant bodies paraded in supporting theefforts of the Syrian Temple wearing their aprons and carrying their lodge banners under the direction of ILL Sirs Randall Proctor, Kenny Harper and Noble Darb Dewar . Present also was The Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Kentucky MWB NobleBaumgartner,, and MWB’s Nobles Mike Himes and Norm Mick . Now we are approaching January 1, 2016, two months prior toshow time. This is when all the efforts of circus committee come together, this is when all the puzzle pieces begin to fit. Everythingthat all the committeemen have been working on all year long, Activity Book Sales, Peanut Sales, Finalizing the activity Book andTaking it to Print, Finalizing the Ringmasters, Choirs, Singers, Orchestra and Guest Speakers, Distributing the Mom and Dad’sEfforts Who goes where? This goes on right up until almost show time. Distribution of parking passes, wrist bands, all hands ondeck the Thursday night before setting up all the information booths , sales tables ,animal rides, hanging banners, unit participation, photographers and all that goes on including the command center . I must mention the delightful job that Don Sauerwine and JohnDsuban does in providing the men’s traditional dinner prior to the Friday night opener. Lady Kathy Wilson and the ladies tookcare of the ladies traditional dinner making it a complete and eventful start for circus 2016 weekend. I must mention that this yearwe had a lineup of hospital associated members in the masonic parade. ILL Sir Gary Caudill , Past Hospital Board Chairman-SHCCincinnati, Doug Sitzler , Current Hospital Board Chairman-SHC CincinnatiHarrison Green, Full Board Member, SHC Cincinnati, ILL Cliff Fullman, Full Board Member, SHC Lexington, Kentucky . Along withpatient ambassadors and their families represented and honored at each of four performances. As Potentate you become somewhatof a catalyst, maybe an expeditor to a point, good will ambassador, and showman possibly, but what is the most fun is just goingaround and around seeing all the people you had something to do with for the past year involving circus 2016. When you lookback and remember all the efforts of so many you realize that you are the one of the luckiest members of the Syrian Temple to havebeen a small part of this big huge and profitable production. In conclusion I must say if I had to list those that I talked with concerning circus 2016 that aided and helped in the running of itthe list would be 200 plus or more . And when you think you either talk to,E-mail, phone call or personally visit and meet with all these people some more than others obviously and others a lot. You againrealize how honored and lucky you are. And how tired you can be. And how lucky I am to have Kathy Wilson at my side. Love youKathy. And we both love the Syrian Temple, and Shriners Hospital for Children. If I could have mentioned everyone personallythat deserved personal recognition I would have literally not got the article in on time. But all those involved know who you wereand what each of you accomplished and I will never forget any of you for what you accomplished. .A special thanks to JackRamsey for working all four performances. What an example of dedication he displayed to the Syrian Shrine Circus. Thank YouJack. Thank you, Art Weingartner Potentate 2016

Halo-gravity tractionis a valuable tool for spinal correction

Lexington-Hospital

Nine-year-old Emma McPeters has diastrophic dysplasia, a form of dwarfism that is accompaniedby a host of orthopaedic problems. A previous rod surgery failed to achieve the desired curvecorrection in her spine, and after careful evaluation, Vishwas Talwalkar, M.D. chose to placeEmma in halo-gravity traction for four weeks to obtain some curve correction prior to surgery.Halo-gravity traction involves placing the patient under anesthesia and attaching a metal halo tothe skull using screws on the sides of the forehead and behind the ears. After the halo is in placetraction weight is added by hanging weights from a rope woven through a pulley system attachedto the halo. The initial weight is light and is slowly increased over time to achieve maximumtraction weight for the child. “The halo placement allows us to use traction to gradually andsafely stretch and straighten the spine,” says Dr. Talwalkar. While in traction, Emma is able to move about the hospital by using a special walker or wheelchairdesigned for use with a halo. Because severe curves of the spine can increase pressure on thelungs, she must undergo periodic x-rays and lung function tests in order to measure theeffectiveness of the treatment.Emma’s care team has reason to expect a positive outcome from this treatment. A recent studyinvolving Dr. Talwalkar along with Lexington Shriners Hospital physicians Henry J. Iwinski, Jr.,M.D., Ryan D. Muchow, M.D. and Janet Walker, M.D., examined the results of preoperativehalo-gravity traction in children with severe spinal deformity. This study, published in the Journalof Pediatric Orthopaedics B (Jan. 2014), showed an average of 38 percent curve correctionwas achieved using preoperative halo-gravity traction in addition to surgery.

SYRIAN SHRINE UNITS

Antique CaravanOn behalf of our Director Chuck Aynes, he would like to personallythank Caravan members, Dave Aaronson, Charlie Armstrong, GaryCaudill, Garry Feese, Jim Steele, Alex Steidle, Rod Steidle and Woodyfor their recent contribution of time to the 2016 Syrian ShrineCircus-Animal Rides. The revenue contribution to the 2016 SyrianShrine Circus would not have been a success without the dedicationand hard work of these Caravan members. We had our first and onlyparade in March, the St Patrick’s Day parade, a lot of fun, and agreat turn-out by the Caravan, the oldest motorized unit in SyrianShrine, celebrating our 43rd year. Although we had the parade inMarch, its spring and everybody loves a parade, and its parade season. Our goal th i s year i s 25 parades , spreading the word aboutShrinedom..Gary

Good Day, Illustrious Sir. Members of the Divan. Trustees. MembersAll. Just a few short weeks ago we had a Circus, we had a lot ofClowns at that Circus working there rear ends off! And where I can’tthank them enough for doing all the good things, and giving out allthe great smiles and making all the people happy that they came to.I would like to take a moment and think some of the special Clowns. There was a medium sized group of Clowns in our unit that just wentover and beyond the call of duty at this last circus. At this past Circuswe had one Clown this is recently had surgery done to his foot andyet he was out there in this cast clowning kudos sir. We had threeClowns out there suffering and dealing with the effects of cancer butyet they were still out there giving it everything they had great job. There was another Clown out there that has any serious heartcondition but yet I believe he did not miss a show, and yet there wasalso another Clown out there that has family member that was notfeeling best. And yes I know there was other Shriners that are insimilar situations that would give there all these men I want to saybravo thank you very much you inspire us all. Hats off you all,Barrels DaClownDesert Riders-MustangsWe are very excited to have the opportunity to bring back the former“Desert Riders” Mustang Unit. It has taken a lot of work to get a fewof the cars back into good running order over the past winter. Ourgroup is looking forward to participating and parading with everyonein the coming 2016 season, starting off with the St, Patrick’s DayParade Saturday March 12th. If anyone is interested in getting someinformation on joining, please contact our Director Don Brockman@513-518-8201, or the Assistant Director Jeremy Chaney @513-967-5459. The plan is for us to meet the second Wednesday of everymonth. We will be meeting at the Kreimer’s Bier Haus in Miamitown,Ohio for anyone who would like to come and meet the group. Also, ithas been a struggle to find parts for these cars due to the age of theunits. We are trying to reach out to anyone who used to be in the unitthat may have some old parts laying around they would like to giveback to the unit. Again we are excited to participate and grow thisMustang’s Unit throughout the 2016 season, and welcome anyonewho is interested in joining. Thank You, Mustang-UnitFlying FezSincerest thanks and appreciation goes out to allShriners who took time out to help with our Circusto make it a success. There is also a big thank youto those donations to our Mom & Dad’s Club. Thatmoney purchased tickets to those children thatare unable to purchase tickets to see the circus. Ihave met adults who still remember coming to ourCircus with tickets provided by us where otherwisethey would have never been able to attend. We cannot forget theHospital Host members that took time out and drove some of ourable patients to see this Circus. Those Circus days will bring us backto a deep reality of what a Shriner ’s Life is all about by helping theneedy children under any circumstance, when and if possible. These

are memories that will be etched in your mind and especially thosechildren in need, memories of our support and kindness will never beforgotten. Spring is here and our parade activities are building up. Iwill keep you informed of what, when and where the Fez will be. TheFez already covered the Circus days and headed to the St. PatrickDay Parade on March 14. From there it will stage on Sunday May 1at Eden Park here in Cincinnati, meeting at 6:00 AM, to back up ourHospitals Cheers to the Flying Pig Marathon runners.. You see, themore noise we make as the runners and walkers come by the moreexposure that we present to the world showing who the Shriners are.I have been so surprised that so many have no idea who we are at thesame time those that know us cannot thank us enough for what wedo. The Parades keep coming, the one following will take place inPigeon Forge, TN. on May 7. Registration is needed for that paradebut you can still attend the Fun Fest on May 5 thru 8th.With all ourpolitical debates taking place and the questions raised of youreligibility to run for office it brings a thought to mind. “Why paymoney to have your family tree traced; go into politics and youropponents will do it for you”Essalamu Aleikum Sam MattarFrom the OGI ready had some reservations about clowning up at the circus onSaturday night. All the little comments, the looks and laughs inpassing. But, I have to THANK all the clowns for a memorable time. And I have a whole new appreciation for what it takes to be a clown. When you have to look behind you and both sides before you start totake a step because of little kids coming at you from “ALL” sides.Just to get you to sign their book … was there a competition I didn’tknow about? Oh, no one told me to about the hand cramps, thanksagain clowns. On a serious note, I truly have to say thank you to afew of you personally, Patches, Moto, Wheels, Chile Pepper, GoofBall, Bul Bus, Tunes and Hot Rod. All the little things you did for mewas Greatly Appreciated. And God Bless for what you do for thecircus and our Hospital.Jerry A Ulm, Oriental Guide…PS No Barrels, not till after 2020! Andonly if I get to incorporate the hat.Fund Raising CommitteeThe Circus has pasted and looks to have been successful and theHenry Rifle raffle has beenExtremely successful. Thenthere’s the story about 7 year old Mohamed who entered his classroomon the first day of school. “What’s your name?” asked the teacher.“Mohamed,” he replied. “You’re in Texas now,” replied the teacher,“So from now on your name is Bubba.” Mohamed returned homefrom school. “How was your day, Mohamed?” his mother asked.“My name is not Mohamed. I’m in Texas now and my name isBubba.” “Are you ashamed of your name, are trying to dishonor youparents, your heritage, your religion?” “Shame on you.” And shebeat the crap out of him. She then called his father, who beat thecrap out of him again. The next day the teacher noticed the freshbruises. “What happened to you, Bubba?” She asked. “Well shortlyafter I became a Texan, I was attacked by two Muslims!”My friends, live life…laugh often…love much…and keep on smiling.Dick ManifoldLegion of HonorCommander: Marvin Kuhn, PP, Director: Chuck Cowan…. The circuswas a great success do to the hard work of many nobles and The MiniRacers were out in full force to participate and help. The TempleEaster functions and egg hunt were fantastic with lots of familyenjoyment. The St Patrick’s Day parade was a great start to ourparade season as we all had fun and showed off the great Mini Racerenthusiasm for the Cincinnati crowd. The Potentate’s Ball is comingup and we will be planning on some fun and fellowship with our fellownobles. The May fest and Pigeon Forge parade is coming up soon andthe Mini Racers will be planning to attend and enjoy another greatweekend of fun and relaxation. God Bless to all Nobles and Ladies.Doc HakesNorthern Kentucky Shrine ClubNKSC would like to extend our congratulations to Nobles DonBrockman, Circus Director and Bruce Pendleton, Assistant Director, the Clowns, the Trustees and all others who made this year’s circus agreat success. It was a truly enjoyable experience. We are still in theplanning stages for our activities for this year. Once again we will beparticipating in the City of Union parade. As of this writing, noinformation has been forthcoming from the city. We are still hopingto put together a CCDW class again this year. We are still working

through the pros and cons of last year’s event. There is more tocome concerning this class. NKSC is looking for a new venue for ourmeetings. There was much discussion concerning this at our Februarymeeting. If any of our members would like to suggest a place, pleaselet Ralph or Al know. Ideally, this would be a centralized location inthe Northern Kentucky area. The Northern Kentucky Shrine Clubmeets the fourth Thursday of each month at PeeWee’s in CrescentSprings. The business meeting begins at 7:00 PM. Bring your family, have dinner and enjoy the fellowship. Al Tucker, SecretaryOriental BandDan Depenbrock Director…The last month or so, the O.B. has beenreally busy. We, along with other Syrian Units and Nobles worked andplayed at our annual Shire Circus held at the Better Bank and Trust(B B & T) Arena on the Campus at Northern Kentucky University. Our Band played before all 4 Circus Performances and we even playedafter the Saturday afternoon Performance outside of the Arena whilepeople were heading to their cars. Lots of hard work by many Noblesand Ladies but the Circus is our biggest annual fundraiser for theTemple and the O.B. was glad to be a part of the support needed thisyear and every year the Circus is held. One of the best parts of theCircus festivities was seeing a couple of our Guys who have has healthproblems and haven’t been able to attend as many meetings/practicesas they would like to, was that they were able to make the Circus onmultiple days and we were so glad to spend time and visit with HolgerKaminsky and Eric Metz. Keep on the path to good health Guys! Thanks to Don Brockman and his Staff for all their hard work onthis year’s Circus. Following the Circus, the O.B. and our Ladiesworked one of the Temple Fish Fry nights on March 4 th where wehosted a nice crowd at our Shrine Center for this Temple Fundraiser. This event has been growing every year! With all yourpolitical mess we are listening to our future leaders it takes meback to our earlier presidents such as Harry Truman who probablymade as many or more important decisions regarding our nation’shistory as any of the other 32 Presidents proceeding him. However, a measure of his greatness may rest on what he didafter he left on what he did after he left the White House Goodold Harry Truman was correct when he observed, “My choicesin life were either to be a piano player in a whore house or apolitician. And to tell the truth, there is hardly any difference!”We ought to have cloned him for telling it like it is and being frugalwith our tax dollars!
