The Shriek The Shriek FEBRUARY 2018 Hope everyone has had a great start to this New Year. I want to thank everybody whom endured the winter tundra weather that we had for the installation of officer’s ceremony on January 6. We had a great turnout and tons of fun. Everyone seemed to be relaxed and enjoyed the evening’s food and festivities. We could not have done this without my aides whom did a fabulous job led by my Chief Aide Sparky. As many of you know, we lost our dear friend suddenly about 24 hours later. He will be dearly missed and went out on a high note. He was very pleased with this event as well and therefore I think we can all have some peace with this seemingly senseless tragedy. Our next big event will be the 97th annual Shrine Circus. The circus with a purpose has gained momentum over the month of January and we are looking forward to a fabulous turnout. For this year’s paper crusade appreciate dinner we will have a dry run fish fry on Feb 9. Thanks to all who make this a great event and looking forward to serving you this meal to appreciate you and all you do. The world-famous fish fries will kick off this month and run until the end of March. Be sure to attend every Friday and remember we do have to-go orders. In addition, do not forget to come and support one of our monthly Saturday events like bingo or dinner dances. These are always a good time for fellowship with your brothers and sisters of the Shrine. For another fundraising opportunity, get your 1971 orange VW bug chances today! We will start bringing the car to events, so you can get a good look at it. It is a beauty for its age, like me. Lastly, in terms of fundraising we will be selling RobGregbucks. That is right we have Rob bucks left over from last year that I am putting my stamp on for you to save a lot of money in 2018. Call the office for details. You cannot use last years bucks so please discard them today. From the report given by Ill Gary Caudill concerning our fraternal membership, the trend is very alarming. For the first time in our history, we have fallen below 1300 members. While we cannot control the black camel, we can help with restoration of our current members and recruit new members to keep our great philanthropy alive. Remember I love you and your pretty. Antique CaravanThe New Year can often bring a mixed bag of emotions and memories for many Shriners and their families…. Some may have just experienced the bestyear ever and look forward to an even greater one looming ahead. Others may have just trudged through one deep struggle after another. The freshcalendar year brings desperate hope for things to be better, with an ache for the still-fresh wounds to slowly begin their process of healing. Whetheryou’ve just walked through the greatest year of your life, or are incredibly glad to see this one finally over, one truth still rings clear amidst it all. Youare not alone. Not ever. Your Syrian Shrine family is there to help, if needed. And though things and Shrine officers around us shift and change, SyrianShrines commitment to its members never changes. Syrian Shriners are lovers of Masonic principles, may the fruits of our spirit be evident in your lives– with love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. If you need help in 2018 contact your unit leadership,if you don’t belong to a Unit, contact a Shrine Center officer! Gary

Bona CourtCongratulations to the newly installed 2018 Syrian Shrine Divan and Trustees. The Ladies of Bona Court are looking forward to working with Ill. SirGreg Pelfrey and his Lady Jacque (our Lady too) throughout 2018. It is rewarding to be a part of the same philanthropy with such an amazing group ofNobles and their Ladies in supporting Shriners Hospital. The Ladies hope that everyone gives Syrian Shrine their continued support throughout thisyear to make it even more successful.

CircusCongratulations! The 97th Annual Syrian Shrine Circus is here. February 2-4, 2018 at BB&T Arena at NKY University. Syrian Shrine would like tothank the Circus Committee for their devotion and hard work. The Nobles, their families and the community for their continued support. We hope thateveryone purchased their tickets and enjoyed one of the shows! Thank you again!

ClownsEducation article…..Seeking Further and More Light (Why Competing at a Convention is the Masonic way to be a Clown) We have all heard theexcuses. I don’t go to competition because I do this for the Kids. I don’t like getting in front of people and being judged. I did it once and I didn’t likeit. Etc. Etc.…………………………. I would like to remind you of when you stood at a Door and knocked three times. The first time you asked for theRites and Benefits of Masonry. Next you were seeking Further Light in Masonry. Sometime later You were seeking More Light in Masonry. The ritualand wording may be a little different from State to State. The message is the same. When you became a Shriner, you were still tied to these words andthe obligations. There is not a better way to seek light as a Shrine Clown then to attend a regional and/or an ISCA convention. The classes are there forall to learn. The competitions are there to help you evaluate where you are as a Clown. It helps you evaluate how to take it to the next level. I am anexperienced Shrine Clown. I have attended many conventions. I have competed, Judged, helped run them as a regional officer, an Education officer, andam a Secretary. I have learned something or many things from every one of them. I receive new light as a Shrine Clown every time I go! It does notmatter if you are a new Clown or a 20+-year Clown. You will gain light from Competition and the classes at these events. I have heard many complaintsover the years about harsh Judges. It is one reason many do not want to compete. We are working on that in our organizations. Perhaps if you honestlyevaluate what Judges say in the comments, you can find something useful. If one Judge really hacks you off what did the other ones say? Learn from thelight and insight they are offering you. Improve yourself in Clown Masonry. The expense can also be an objection. ISCA and Imperial can be anexpensive endeavor. The Regional conventions are always drive able distance and less expensive. There are always Museums, amusement parks andother local attractions for the Family. It can very easily be made into a family vacation! What can be better fun for your kids than hanging out with abunch of crazy Masonic Clowns. Perhaps it will influence them to join one day. I guarantee they will have more positive memories from that type ofvacation than many other options. Lastly there is a ton of fun to be had at these conventions. The comradery from people you would not otherwise meetis priceless. You will make friends from all sorts of places, maybe even other countries. Aye Percy! I have learned more in hospitality rooms sometimesthan the classes. You can discuss your score sheet with the Judges there. Perhaps after they elaborate on their reason for your score you may becomefriends. If you see a child with no smile, give them yours Andy Chillie Mellman ISCA Education officer

Syrian Shrine Golf LeagueGreetings Nobles and friends. Well, you’ll just have to hang in there, we’ve only got about nine more weeks, or so, till we start back in theclassic Syrian Shrine Golf League. Now is a great time to be getting that extra putting practice in and working on those physical exercises thatwill give you that extra 10 or 15 yards off the tee. Here’s a few more things to cogitate on these frosty days. How to properly line up that fourthputt. How to get more distance out of a shank. How to avoid the water when you lie 8 in the bunker. How to relax when you’re hitting three offthe tee. Knowing when to regrip your ball retriever. Now just sit back and think about the great nine hole rounds you’re going to have atGlenview Golf Course this year, birdies and pars are there for you to get. April 5th is getting closer. Keep on swinging Dick Manifold

Hospital HostsGreetings Nobles and friends. We’re off and running with this busy Syrian Shrine year. Our Shrine Circus is upon us and we are lookingforward to a very successful event this year. The Hospital Hosts continue their good volunteer work at our Shriners Hospital for Children, andwe invite any Noble able to give a couple of days or more each month to assist us in what we do, check us out. We meet each 1st and 3rd

Wednesday/month at the hospital, 9:30 A.M., in the Board Room. Parking is convenient in the attached parking garage. Meetings last approx.one hour. Examples of what jobs we do; Drive Our Syrian Hospital vans to offer transportation for patients and parents, etc., deliver hospitalinter-office mail, conduct hospital tours, to name a few. Our Syrian Shrine Hospital Vans are running well, thanks to Joe Mason, our vanmaintenance guru and the help of Marty Meyer and company. Dates for the Hosts Picnic and Christmas Party are yet to be set at this point butwill be forthcoming. Now for a short story: Seems Jethro was having trouble in school. His teacher was always yelling at him, “You’re drivingme crazy, Jethro; can’t you learn anything?” One day Jethro’s mother came to school to see how he was doing. The teacher told her honestly thather son was simply a disaster, getting very low marks, and she had never had such an unmotivated and ignorant boy in her teaching career.

Jethro’s mother, shocked at the feedback, withdrew her son from school and moved out of town, relocating in Cleveland, OH. 25 years later, the teacher was diagnosed with irreversible cardiac disease, and was advised by her doctors to have open heart surgery by the only surgeonat the Cleveland Clinic could perform. She decided to have the surgery and it was a remarkable success. When she opened her eyes after thesurgery she saw the handsome young doctor who headed the surgical team smiling down at her. She wanted to thank him but could not talk. Her face started to turn blue, she raised her hand to tell him something but died quickly. The doctor was shocked, wondering what wentwrong so suddenly. When he turned around to leave the room he saw Jethro, now a janitor at the Clinic, had unplugged the life-supportequipment, in order to plug in his vacuum cleaner….. Really, if you thought Jethro had become a heart surgeon, you probably think there’sa possibility that the Bengals will win a Super Bowl! My friends…live life…laugh often…love much…and keep on smiling. Dick Manifold

Mini RacersIt is with deepest heartfelt condolences to family and friends to announce on January 8th, 2018, the Mini Racers lost one of our grandestmembers, Mr. Dave “Sparky” Sparks. Sparky was a 25-year member of the Syrian Shrine, serving as a Trustee and Chief Aide among themany other jobs which he always stepped up to do without hesitation. He also served as Treasurer of the Mini Racers. One month into 2018and everyone is quite busy with preparations for the rest of the new year. Circus, parades and other activities fill the bill as well as monthlymeetings and participation in our local lodges. We are overhauling cars or helping others to prepare for the upcoming parade season. Anyonewishing to join the Mini Racers, wanting to work with us or have any information/questions to swap between units, please feel free tocontact us. What’s the difference between a used tire and 365 days with family and friends? One is a Goodyear and the other is a VERYgood year! God bless the Divan, all Nobles and the families of our Shrine. Mike Miles
