The Shriek OCTOBER 2016 The late Herb “Lucky” Kerns and his Grandson “Little Lucky” were honored, with a portrait at a clown memorial in Florida Greetings Nobles and Ladies. We are about to go into another one of those crazy times that seem like there is just no end to it. The calendars are jammed with things to do. The numbers Two, Zero, One, Six, will be gone before we know it. Please budget your time to attend the most events, meetings, and the parades that are left possible. Please understand that the business meeting is where it all happens. This is where the legislation is brought up approved or turned down. This is when you see and hear your divan, trustees, and committees what they have done and what they plan to do in the future. The 2017 budget will be presented in November. Elections are in December. There are numerous fundraising events that need your attention. Please, do not forget about the Motorcycle raffle which is drawn at the famous end of the year party at the Syrian Shine. Committees will be ending their years and discussing and forming their 2017 committee years. All of the holiday functions unit, club and temple are just around the corner. There will be another full ceremonial in November hopefully at the hospital. Looking at the way we are losing members and understanding how that effects and accelerates dues revenue shrinkage and membership. Please stay informed how all of this will affect your tenure at Syrian Shrine. The potentials are great. The opportunities are even greater. The need for all the active member’s involvement is critical. Please attend these last 4 business meetings for 2016. We need the nobility to budget as much of their time as possible to all of the above as we so busily work towards ending the 2016 year. We need the young and our new nobles especially those that have joined the Syrian shrine in 2014,2015 and so far, in 20l6. We need our younger and our elder nobles all there together supporting the camaraderie the Syrian Temple and its membership are famous for. We need to pull this altogether and be the fun part of masonry and at the same time be all over the masonic fraternity, and maintain our image that we are the world’s greatest philanthropy Shriners Hospital for Children. Thank you so much for all your support thus far in 2016 and I hope you will put in the extra time needed to make 2016 a truly great year. Sincerely Art Weingartner Potentate 2016 Ruf fians The Ruffians are a group of Shriners aged 45 and under who have decided to come together for fun, fellowship and Shriner recruitment. For the first meeting seven of us were in attendance, where we established our purpose, name and emblem. Fun and friendship are our main purpose. Secondly we have decided since we are a club and not a unit we will allow non-Masons and Masons who are not Shriners into our club with a timeline for them to become a Shriner. We will teach and mentor these individuals and keep them on track to accomplish their goals in Freemasonry and Shrinedom. There are no dues or stress involved in our club and welcome all Shriners aged 45 and below. If you have an interest in meeting with us we will be meeting September 19 at 6:30pm at Homewood suites in West Chester 9226 Schulze Dr 45069. After our meeting we will be going to Top Golf and we will be taking their new state of the art driving range for a test drive. Questions? Interest? September brought us together, having a great time before andafter our parades at Portsmouth and Cheviot leaving us with Aurora andpumpkin run in the early days of October. A goodnumber of Units, even our lady Shriners, participatedin the Harvest Home parade but not the support wehave had in the past. That is sad when we see how weare dwindling in numbers and support for our Shriners.A memorable drive for me was heading back homefrom Portsmouth on route 52 with a beauty seen bestof bike but still there to enjoy. Our Ohio pastures onthe left accented by the Ohio River. On the other sideis the beauty of our hills topped with the majestic OakTrees. Nestled in between is someone’s dream home hidden away from therumbling of the world around them overlooking the Ohio River. In closingI would like to mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, “Common Sense”who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old hewas, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. Hewill be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as: Knowingwhen to come in out of the rain: Life isn’t always fair: Why the early birdgets the worm: Maybe it was my fault: And make sure to Vote November.“It’s the lesson we learn from the past that show us the road for the future”.Essalamu Aleikum Sam MattarShrineGolf LeagueIt’s difficult to pinpoint what exactly makes golf so exhilarating. Some of us livefor its competitive edge; others golf to relax and escape. But for most us, golfserves as the perfect excuse to get out and enjoy the company of friends. We endedSeptember with our Roadster Family Picnic at Lake Waynoka. Glad to geteveryone together to relax and share stories. There are a lot of activities todo with your fellow Shriners and families this month, check your “Shriek”for details. October brings the Pumpkin Run, then on the 8th the RummageSale - if you have any items you would like to sell, rent a table or donateyour items to the Shrine for their tables. Middle of the month brings thePaper Crusade a great money maker for our hospitals. The 28th is the “Trunkor Treat” night at the Shrine. We had a nice crowd last year for the area“trick or treaters” and our little ones. The 29th is the Shrine Halloween Party- see the “Shriek” for all the details about the Halloween Party. We had agood crowd there last year. We do have some cars available to any Shrinerwho wants to join a fun, family oriented group, contact me or any otherRoadster member. Hope to see you all in October plus some new faces.Since election is around the bend I am sure there will be several politicaldiscussions, so I am starting mine now. I will list some helpful tips on howto best help the US economy by spending your stimulus check you receivefrom the present administration wisely. 1/ If you spend that money at Wal-Mart the money will go to China or Sri Lanka. 2/ If you spend it on gasolineit will go to the Arabs. 3/ If you purchase a computer it will go to India,Taiwan or China. 4/ If you purchase fruit and vegetables, it will go to Mexico,Honduras and Guatemala. 4/ If you buy an efficient car, it will go to Japan orKorea. 5/ f you purchase useless stuff or Harley parts, it will go to Taiwan.6/ If you pay your credit card off, or buy stock, it will go to upper managementbonuses and they will hide it offshore. Instead, keep your money in Americaby: 1/ Spend it at yard sales. 2/ Go to ball games. 3/ Spending it on womenor men of the street. 4/ Purchase Local Beer and tattoos. These are the onlybusinesses still operating in the US. In conclusion: Go to the ball game witha tattooed man or woman that you met at a yard sale and drink beer all day!No need to thank me, I am just glad I could be of help. Sam Mattar 227-7260

Circus DirectorI must take this opportunity to discuss Circus 2017. As we all know thecircus dates of February 3,4 and 5,2017 are in place contractually for 2017and 2018. It is obvious that there is not enough time to earn all the moniesneeded to reduce the risk of putting on the Circus. Once the calendar turnsover to 2017 we will have just 4 weeks until Circus Showtime. If we wait toact that is not enough time to earn a profit. We need to act now. We have allbeen asked to make our $40.00 Mom and Dad’s donations, Buy and sellactivity book ads and banners, purchase one liners and buy all the ticketspossible for our friends and relatives and pull this circus off one more time.In 2016 our circus office took in over $33000 in just ticket sales. That was 28.4% of the total ticketsales. This was a huge and valiant effort. What I am saying here is simple both the BBT box officerevenues and the Syrian shrine secondary box office revenues are both needed for the Shrine circus tocontinue. Again Both are needed. Neither one by itself is a stand-alone operation. Noble input of$33000 in ticket sales plus is needed. In order to offset dues revenue shrinkage in 2017 and future duesrevenue shrinkage. This needs to happen year after year after year. Think about it follows basic logic. If our membership numbers reduce each year our circus office which is basically our nobility’scontribution to ticket sales must increase. The noble input has to be buy and/or sell and/or buy and sellthe tickets. Anyway and every way possible. 2017 is the 96th running of the Syrian Shrine Circus wejust have to make it to the l00th year. Please start now to support the Shrine circus 2017 thru ShowtimeFebruary 3,4,5, 2017. Put in the extra effort starting now and initiate and maintain the momentum.Yours in Faith, Art WeingartnerCircus Director 2017
