The Shriek SEPTEMBER 2017 As the summer starts winding down and the occasional drift of cooler air begins to hint of fall, it makes this Potentate pause and reflect that I’m in the waning stages of my term. It’s bittersweet to think: yes! I’m almost finished!; but also: oh no! I’m almost out of time! On the one hand, it’s the culmination of an incredible five year journey with obligations and commitments; but all fun, and with some of the best people I’ve ever known. On the other hand there are some considerations, maybe some second guessing - could I have done this better? Or that more effectively? Which leads me to a paragraph I’d read in the beginning of this year, from some ancient Shriek writings, from as far back as one and a half decades ago... << A Philosopher once said, “Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.” When you’re in charge, it’s easy to get seduced by the power you possess and the deference others pay you. You’re the Pote, the top dog, numero uno, the head honcho. However, if you give in to the allure, you set the stage for your own demise. You create a barrier between yourself and your members, and you put yourself on a pedestal from which you are destined to fall. One of the toughest balancing acts in this position is to exercise power while maintaining humility. (reprinted from Syrian Shriek, Potentate’s (G.C.) One of my goals this year was to get more Shriner’s exposure in Northern Kentucky. To that end, we made some progress, but there’s so much more potential there with Blue Lodge members who don’t even know we exist! It was therefore very satisfying that we had a solid turnout for three Kentucky Parades this past summer. Bellevue-Dayton on Memorial Day; Union Celebrates America Parade; and the Fort Thomas 4 th of July Parade. I was very proud that on August 21, we attended the Fort Thomas City Council meeting and were presented with a 1 st Place Trophy for the “Most Entertaining” category for which there were over 100 entries in that very big parade (even with a “low-and-slow” flyover by two A-10 Warthogs!). In early August, the Shriners and hospital volunteers attended the Foreigner, Cheap Trick, and Jason Bonham Led Zeppelin Experience concert at Riverbend. We were selling CDs and giving away a Foreigner signed guitar. I was later informed by our promoter, that our group sold 618 CDs and grossed $12,360! He also advised that we (Cincinnati) were the best city so far on this year’s Tour and outsold his previous best by over $2,000! Congrats to all the Shriners and Hospital Volunteers who absolutely Rocked It for the Kids and for our Hospitals! On August 12 we had a Ceremonial inducting 11 new Nobles; immediately followed by our Family Day Picnic with great fun, good food, fellowship and magnificent weather! We also made a solid showing at our annual Cincinnati Hospital Day in late August, and had a great group that paraded on the field at the Cincinnati Reds Shrine Masons Day at the ballpark. In September, we end our “dark period” of summer break; and kick it off with our Portsmouth River Days Parade and visit with our Southern Ohio Shrine Club brethren. We’ll have our first meeting in our “newly refurbished” Temple! Come and see the exciting new changes, come early and attend the “Second Section” Ceremonial for our newly inducted Nobles. September will also feature the Harvest Home Parade on Sep. 7; the “Pote’s Stag Walleye Safari” to Lake Erie Sep 8-10; and the Great Lakes Shrine Association 68 th Annual Meeting in Springfield, IL on Sep 12-17. Please note a Change to our Calendar: the Fastiques 42 nd Annual Pumpkin Run Nationals will be Sep 29-Oct 1. Please stay tuned to your weekly email “Blasts” for upcoming Parade information on Sep 30 for this great hospital fundraising event ($50k annually). Imperial Potentate’s Membership ReferralProgram introduced

The three “R”s of membership development are recruitment – thesuccessful creation of new members; retention – providing aprogram that keeps your current members active, engaged andinvolved; and restoration – restoring to active membership thosemembers who have lost connection with the fraternity. Theseconcepts are critical to the future success of our organizations.

As Shriners, we all have accountability to our fraternity. It becomesour responsibility to educate others about Shriners International, create more Shriners, recruit more Freemasons, and refer more patients to Shriners Hospitals for Children.Collaboration is essential, and we must all work together to promote successful andefficient membership processes.

Shriners International has developed a new approach to membership development, changing the membership paradigm with the introduction of a new referral program. Withthis new referral functionality, current nobles can now directly refer names of friends, familymembers and acquaintances who they feel would make good Shriners.Similar to beashrinernow.com, this new referral program is administered through WebFezand links the prospect with his referring noble, promoting natural mentorship based on apre-existing friendship or acquaintance. The new process can be tracked and reported, andeach referral triggers automatic communications to the referrer and the prospect. Once anoble makes a referral, he then receives tools and resources to mentor his prospect tocreation or restoration. The program encourages constant collaboration, so that everyonecan share their Shrine with the good men around them.

A recommended part of the new program is the encouragement to host fellowship partiesand rush events. Fellowship parties should be in a relaxed environment and have an opentable/social concept, with no formalized membership presentation. These parties should beopen to prospective members, but with no pressure for membership recruitment orrestoration; and membership literature should be available upon request.

Rush events have an open house, social and educational concept, and are open toprospective members and their families. A multifaceted presentation providing informationon Shriners, Masonry and affiliated organizations is encouraged at these events, includinginformation about temple clubs and units. Membership literature should also be provided toall attendees.

Our goal for each Imperial Year is less suspensions, less demits and more affiliations. Theleadership of Shriners International has added the lofty goal of 12,000 new Creations fromSession to Session. This goal is attainable if temples focus on matching and surpassingtheir own best number of creations in the last five years. There are many resources available to help us reach our membership goals. Using the newWebFez referral system is the perfect place to start, and beashrinernow.com is still a greatresource. There are also a lot of helpful tools on Shriners Village, including theMembership Toolkit, Roadmap to Membership Success, and Marketing Materials OrderingSystem. We also encourage everyone to work with their Regional Membership Director andthe Office of Membership Development, and to send your temple membership team to theannual Membership Seminar for invaluable tips and information.

Kara Tucker

Kara Tucker is one of the happiest 7-year old’s out there, but you might not realize what this little warrior has gone through. On August 12, 2012 Kara pulled on the cord of a cooking crockpot, spilling the hot contents all over her. Her dad, David, reacted instantly and put Kara in a cold shower. When he noticed her skin starting to fall off, David rushed Kara to the rescuesquad in Scottsville, VA who then transported Kara to the University of Virginia. This tragic accident left little Kara with amultitude of burns including second degree burns on her back, eye, face, head, and foot as well a full thickness skin loss onher back. The list goes on and on. Unfortunately, the University of Virginia no longer had a burn center that could deal withthe magnitude of Kara’s injuries. Kara’s family then turned to Shriner’s Hospital in Cincinnati, OH who made an appointmentfor her right away. Kara’s grandmother Lynn had this to say, “I will never forget standing outside the hospital emergencyroom watching the ambulance pull out to take Kara and her mom Larissa to the airport. I felt so bad having held on to her forso long here in Virginia; it was only then when I realized that she was getting no relief from the pain. A complete strangerpulled me into an empty room and told me that I had to let her go, that the Shriners could fix this, but University of Virginiacould not.” As you can see from the pictures, Kara is absolutely thriving these days, thanks to the love and care that both theShriners and Angel Flight East have shown the family In the words of Lynn, “We never could have done this without you all.We are blessed and we know it. Now pretty much our biggest worry is having to make sure we keep Kara’s skin properlycoated with sunblock when she is out and about. She has perfect range of motion and we go back in two years for a followup visit.”

Angel Flight East (AFE). It is dedicated to serving the community by facilitating free air transportation to children and adults in need ofmedical treatment far from home. Volunteer pilots use their own aircraft and pay for all expenses of the flight. Although AFE’s office is inBlue Bell, PA we cover a 14-state territory that includes Virginia to Ohio to Maine.

AFE volunteer pilots have been flying seven-year-old Kara since 2012 from Virginia to Shriner’s Hospital for Children in Cincinnati, OH forburn treatment. On her most recent trip, Kara received the great news she does not have to go back for two whole years.

While the fraternity and hospitals are two differentand separate organizations, they are only as successful as thecommitment of each of us to each organization. For 45 years theAntique Caravan has set the tone, and throughout 2017 the Caravanhas had many opportunities to support both organizations, fromparades, meetings, fundraising events, as well as hospital events. Our Director Chuck Aynes wants to thank the members for theiroutstanding efforts during the summer, for their work with ShrinersInternational and Shriners Hospitals for Children. GaryHospital HostGreetings Nobles and friends. Breaking News! Due to the increasedactivity at the Hospital on Tuesdays a parking problem has developed. We were asked to consider changing our meeting days to helpalleviate the crowded parking situation. At the Unit businessmeeting, this past Tuesday, the members agreed to change to thesecond and fourth Wednesday. However, it happens that the Boardof Directors meet on the fourth Wednesday and use both theauditorium and of course, the Board Room. As it stands now, wewill be meeting on the first and third Wednesday each month andprimarily we will meet in the Board Room. Same meeting time,9:30 A.M. Meeting date this month September 6th. We want to thankJohn Wisher and Dave Brown for putting our annual Hosts picnictogether. Little disappointed in the response of the Unit members tothis event, which we should consider continuing it in the future. Liketo welcome two new members who are being processed through therequirements to become a volunteer. Namely, Jeff Donnette and TerryBossman. Now a short story. An elderly lady wrote this thank younote to this elementary school. Dear all, God bless you for thebeautiful radio I won at your recent senior citizens luncheon. I am94 years old and live at the Springer Home for the Aged. All myfamily has passed away…I am all alone now and it’s nice to knowthat someone is thinking of me. God bless you for your kindness toan old forgotten lady. My roommate is 95 and has always had herown radio, but before I received one, she would never let me listento hers, even when she was napping. The other day her radio fell offthe night stand and broke into a lot of pieces. It was awful and shewas in tears. Her distress over the broken radio touched me and Iknew it was God’s way of answering my prayers. She asked if shecould listen to mine, and I told her to kiss my a—! Thank you forthat opportunity. Sincerely, Agnes. My friends live life…laughoften…love much…and keep on smiling. Dick Manifold

Masonic Golf ClubAfter all the Thursday Golf rain-out’s we finally had some goodweather. Lindale Golf Course is in good shape this year due to allthe rain. The lakes and ponds on the course are over full and capturingmore golf balls this year. We think some of the giant Bull frogsswallowed these golf balls. We gained some new members over thesummer. Our last Scramble was August 3rd. Twenty-six membersplayed. Charles Rickey’s team won at five under. All the scoreswere close. Harold Gregory did another great job organizing thescramble teams by handicaps making teams fairly even. Gregoryalso organized and set up the Buffet lunch after golf. Every teamthat participated received a prize. This club was successful againthis year because of the members who help out where ever needed. Our Annual Club Championship Tournament takes place the first threeThursday’s in September. The last week is scheduled in case a playoffis required to determine the 2017 Club Champ. The traveling trophywill be presented to the champ at the October Awards Banquet. Weare always looking for new members interested in some fun golf andgood Masonic Fellowship. Remember to keep our ill and sufferingmembers in your prayers. Dan KuhnMini RacersWe had another great Harvest Home Parade with lots of fun and crazydriving. We have struggled this parade season with broken cars butthe guys continue to put them back together and running again. Wedrive fast and furious putting the fine-tuned machines through thepaces and pushing the limits of technology... HaHa. We have hadsome member health issues this year with surgery and illness.. andsome are still working to be healthy again. Wishing the best andspeedy recovery to all! We enjoyed the Syrian Family Fun Day andCeremonial with fellow nobles and friends. Mini Racers stand readyand willing to support our brother Greg Pelfrey as he prepares toenter his year for the Potentate’s position and Tim Redrow as hemoves up in the Divan. Looking forward to a great fall seasonSeptember and October we will have unit meetings at the By Golly’srestaurant in Milford to conduct business and enjoy fellowship. DocHakesOriental BandGood Day my Brothers. It’s been a great summer. Had a couple ofgreat parades that saw great attendance and excitement to see theShrine. We are truly blessed to be a part of this organization. Theband will resume practices the first Wednesday after the Directorsmeeting September. We will practice once a month on the firstWednesday after the Directors until Jan. when we will resume weeklypractices gearing up for competition in June. We are always lookingfor new members. I am even learning to play the horn under theskilled tutelage of John Synder and Steve Goetz. We will be holdingelections in December for new Unit leadership positions. If there isany interest in a leadership role (Curt) please make Dan Depenbrockaware. RespectfullyRoadstersWe have had a good parade year so far. Starting in May with thePigeon Forge trip and parading 5 cars with 2 new drivers and endedup finishing with 4 cars. Then we went over to the go-cart track. With a hard bump on the track, Bill ended up with a bruised leg fromme when he spun out, I t-boned him good. The Dayton-Bellevueparade was also well attended by the Roadsters, then Bill broke downtowards the end. June 1st was the Milford Parade with 5 drivers andour tow van again. Dinner afterwards was not the best!! July wasalso busy with the Madeira parade, the first parade Lou made it allthe way through - but we lost Dave at the end. After the parade, weworked our booth at the Madeira Festival in Sellman Park, sellingfood and drinks. This is a great fundraiser for the Roadsters. Wehave been doing this for over 10 years. Then our next parade wasNorwood with having a pizza party & meeting before we took off.First time ever — My front left wheel fell off the Roadster, but I wasstill able to keep driving. Thanks to a lady in the crowd who broughtme back my wheel. On September 7th, we will be participating inthe annual Harvest Home Parade with a get-together afterwards. Well wishes for Sue Tolerwho had foot surgery on the 25th of August.Shrine Golf LeagueGreetings Nobles and friends. Our Syrian Shrine Golf League is inits last month of this season. Our final date is the 28th and ourluncheon will be the first Thursday October 5th. We have had manyrain days this year but still, we were able to get many rounds in onthis fine public golf course, Glenview G.C. We look forward tokeeping this Syrian Shrine event going for next year and hope moreNobles will be able to join us. Things I have noticed…It’s amazinghow a golfer who never helps around the house will replace hisdivots, repair ball marks, and rake his sand traps. It’s easier to getup at 6:00 A.M. to play golf than at 10:00 A.M. to mow the grass. And one more…Hazards attract; fairways repel…..Hope to see younext season. April 2018 will be here before you know it! Keep onswingin. Dick ManifoldBona Court No. 8The summer is winding down and Bona Court has been busy. Syrian Clowns. This September as you read this article I will be handing over thegavel over to “Mulligan” as my year of President of the Great LakesShrine Clown Unit Association is over. It has been an honor toserve the 21 Shriner Centers in our Great Lakes area. Now as forthe success that we have had….. last spring, we brought 50 dressingcompeting clowns to Cincinnati from the Great Lakes area andCanada. There was another dozen so clowns that came to participateas judges and advisors. I often refer to our unit as the award-winning Cincinnati clown unit so let me take a moment to elaborate. We entertained 50 competing clowns from 7 States and oneprovinces in Canada. In this competition, “Happy Hobo” your veryown Teardrop place 3rd. In the category of “Auguste Clown”,VeeWee placed 1st and Stripes DaClown, place 3rd In the “FirstTimers” category. Rocky placed 2nd. In the “Can Unit Skit” yourSyrian clown unit placed 2nd. “One-man Parade Ability” Teardropplace 3rd. “Balloon Launching Competition”, Stripes DaClownplaced 1s t . At the In te rna t iona l Clown Uni t Assoc ia t ion”competition held this past winter Chili Pepper took 1st in “HappyHobo” and 2nd in “parade ability” and 2nd in “One Man Skit”,also in a National Shrine Clown Association competition, SyrianShrine, won 1st place in “Group Skit”. I Barrels, earned 1st placein the “One Man Skit” competition and took 2nd in “AugusteMakeup” competition. I would also like to add that Wheels DaClown brought a trophy home for parade vehicle with his bicyclein a local car show. I would like to add that a majority of the clownsin this Temple in Cincinnat i have no desire to compete incompetition, their main focus is entertaining and making peoplehappy, not necessarily putting the plaques on the wall, but, whenthe competition comes into our backyard, we show them what wehave and we shine… I’m very proud to be the Director of one ofthe most fantastic Clown units in clowndum today. CircusThe Activity Book AdForms have now beendistributed to the UnitDirectors. The CircusCommittee is urging allNobles to help sell the adsand always be diligent inapproaching newbusinesses. It would be

great to be able to sell an Activity Book that is wellover 200 pages. Remember, this is a great way forbusinesses to get there name out into the community.A simple business card size, black and white ad isonly $45.00. In past years, the Shrine has sold over1,200 books during the Circus. That’s a great bangfor the buck for any business. Also, considerchecking with your Masonic Lodge and considerplacing a one-page ad of your own. Any Noble canpurchase a personal ad (no business promotion) foronly $60.00. This is a great way to support theCircus. If you have any questions, please feel free tocontact Gary Caudill, Circus Chairman or DonBrockman, Circus Director.
