The Shriek DECEMBER 2017 The year is winding to a close and I am so thankful for the opportunity you have given me to serve in your Divan for these past five years; and allowing me to hold the office of the 103rd Potentate of Syrian Shrine! It has been a FANTASTIC ride and one I shall never forget. I thank everyone who played a part in making this an extraordinary year. You can be very satisfied that your dedicated Divan and Trustees have worked very hard this year. Every officer had special assignments and I could not be more proud of each of them; nor more inspired by our future years of Leadership! Most especially our Recorder and Treasurer, Past Potentates Gary Caudill and Cliff Fullman. Gary (who wears more hats than the proverbial Sam Drucker) has been and continues to be the main spring in this great mechanism we know as Syrian Shrine. I personally am grateful for his support, knowledge, acumen and council. Cliff has not only been a wonderful mentor for me, but also an astute advisor on the financial side of operations; and mostly as the Great Moral Masonic Compass each of us aspires to follow. These two men truly epitomize what “Shriner” and “Mason” mean to me. Our beautiful Front Office Ladies, Sue Martini and Debbie Idler are the glue that holds everything together. They are both true gems and I’m not sure how we could have succeeded without both of these incredible ladies taking care of all our daily business as well as insuring that all the projects (large and small) were capably managed. My Chief Aide, Randall Proctor and all of the Aides on his team, represent some of the hardest working nobles and ladies I have known. I am so proud of the work they have done this year and I could not have chosen a better Chief Aide. Thank you, Randall, and all the Aides for all you have done for me and Syrian Shrine this year. To all the other Committee Chairmen, Club Presidents, Unit Directors and Members, THANK YOU for all you did to make this a successful year. So many events, parades, and opportunities to demonstrate to the public - who we are and what we do. Your selfless dedication of time and energy was always to support our noble fraternity. You are the best!!! We had some notable “firsts” this year - hopefully those that will result in a long term positive impact. We started including the ladies to a greater extent, such as being included in our regular Unit & Club - Divan meetings. Recognizing (and accepting) that although this is still a “man’s organization,” it’s no longer the age of Ward Cleaver; and attracting and retaining members is the key to our longevity. Thank you Ladies for all of your continued support. We also made great inroads in terms of our public awareness in Northern Kentucky. Winning First Place at NKY’s largest parade of the year (in Fort Thomas), as well as several other representations at area parades will go a long way toward membership development in those very untapped (but truly very close) Masonic Districts across the “Ohio Ocean.” We continue to make improvements to our programs and facilities. All this is for YOU, our Nobles, and your families. We are returning to the destination spot from years ago. But, much more needs to be done. If you are not involved and participating, you are really missing out on the true meaning of being a SHRINER! We need to always spread the word of the fun and fellowship found at Syrian Shrine and the great works we do with The Greatest Philanthropy In The World; our Twenty-Two Shriners Hospitals For Children. We need to constantly recruit new members and stay engaged with our events. Working together, we can grow our membership and make further improvements at Syrian Shrine. I am extremely proud of Syrian Shrine and my fellow Nobles. I have traveled extensively in the Masonic world - and true Masonic brotherhood is no stronger than right here at Syrian Shrine! Finally, I want to thank our First Lady, Vicki Lynne Smith, for her support and the time and effort she gave this year. She came into this position not knowing what was involved and did a GREAT job representing Syrian Shrine. I could not have accomplished so much without her. Nobles, support the New Leadership as they start the New Year. Give them the same support you gave me. Continue telling everyone you meet “Who We Are and What We Do.” Syrian Shrine is growing and succeeding because of you!!! The ShriekDECEMBER 2017

The year is winding to a close and I am so thankful for the opportunity you have givenme to serve in your Divan for these past five years; and allowing me to hold the office of the103rd Potentate of Syrian Shrine! It has been a FANTASTIC ride and one I shall never forget.

I thank everyone who played a part in making this an extraordinary year. You can be verysatisfied that your dedicated Divan and Trustees have worked very hard this year. Every officerhad special assignments and I could not be more proud of each of them; nor more inspired by ourfuture years of Leadership! My Chief Aide, Randall Proctor and all of the Aides on his team, represent some of the hardest working nobles andladies I have known. LADY VICKI

\

A Parting Word from Lady VickiBelieve it or not, this year as First Lady has flown by so quickly. Altogether, the lastfive years have been a learning curve for me, as I knew nothing about the Shriners –except I could recognize them by their fezzes. I used to think that the word “divan”was a couch, because that’s what my grandmother called a sofa. But now I knowbetter.Happily, this year I had the pleasure to spend my time with some of the hardestworking men and women that I’ve ever met. We have become friends throughlaughter and fun times. All with a shared common interest, supporting our ShrinersHospitals for Children. So, I invite any new members or those who haven’t been active to please join us inmaking our Shrine the best it can be. Check out the Shriek, our monthly newsletter; and sign up for The Blast, aweekly email update on events to attend. Start with baby steps, like I did; get your feet wet, then dive on into thepool. You will get out of Shriners far more than what you put into it.I thank everyone for your support and helping to make this year a great one.Sincerely,

Lady Vicki

THE TWELVE DAYS OF CHRISTMAS

On the first day of Christmas my true love gave to me a partridge in a pear tree. The partridge in the pear tree symbolizes Christ on the cross. On the second day of Christmas my true love gave to me 2 turtle doves. The turtle doves are symbols of the Old and New Testaments. On the third day of Christmas my true love gave to me 3 French hens. The French hens are symbols of the Trinity- the Father, Son & Holy Spirit. On the fourth day of Christmas my true love gave to me 4 calling birds. The calling birds are symbols of the 4 Gospels- Matthew, Mark, Luke & John.On the fifth day of Christmas my true love gave to me five golden rings. The five golden rings are symbols of the 5 Books of Moses. On the sixth day of Christmas my true love gave to me 6 geese a-laying.The six geese represent the 6 days of creation. On the seventh day of Christmas my true love gave to me 7 swans a-swimming.The seven swans are emblematic of the seven letters written to the seven churches in Revelation. On the eighth day of Christmas my true love gave to me 8 maids a-milking.The eight maids symbolize the 8 Beatitudes. On the ninth day of Christmas my true love gave to me 9 ladies dancing. The nine ladies dancing are emblematic of the 9 expressions of the Holy Spirit. On the tenth day of Christmas my true love gave to me 10 lords a-leaping.The ten lords symbolize the Ten Commandments. On the eleventh day of Christmas my true love gave to me 11 pipers piping. The eleven pipers represent the 11 faithful Apostles. On the twelfth day of Christmas my true love gave to me 12 drummers drumming. The twelve drummers are emblematic of the 12 essential truths of the Apostles Creed.

According to folk lore, The Twelve Days of Christmas was written by a priest during the 1500’s to communicate truth tochildren using symbols. The twelve days begin on Christmas Day and continue until January 5th. When you hear TheTwelve Days of Christmas sung or played maybe you’ll remember the history behind the song. On behalf of the MembershipCommittee and Northern KY Shrine Club, we wish you a Merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year. AlTucker, Secretary, NKSC

ORIENTAL GUIDE

Importance of Selecting Qualified Candidates forthe Office of Oriental Guide

From the Office of the Recorder. When the members of Syrian Shrine elect a Noble to the office ofOriental Guide, we are virtually starting that Noble through the Divan line on the assumption that hewill prove qualified for any merit achievement to the high office of Potentate.

Hence, it’s quite evident that the nominations for Oriental Guide should be based upon thorough andaccurate evaluation of character, ability, and interest.

A Noble can be a good fellow, a hard worker, and a loyal Shriner…and yet lack the basic qualificationswhich make a good Potentate. Unless a Noble is fully qualified for the job, he is unfair both to himselfand to his temple in seeking the office or in permitting his fellow nobles to support and promote hiscandidacy.

The normal starting point of Shrine leadership is the office of Oriental Guide. The following checklistmay prove helpful in evaluating potential candidates for the office of Oriental Guide. However, nothinking man would be so naïve or presumptuous as to all the virtues, talents, and qualifications whichare set forth in this checklist for advance evaluation of potential candidates by the voting members.

• Leadership• Executive ability• Business sense• Community standing and influence• Financially secure• Free to donate ample time• Capable of building good public relations• Good habits and moral character• Interest in Shrinedom• Ability to give and get cooperation• Diplomacy

Many temples have placed a definite limitation upon their progress as a result of hasty judgment inconnection with nominations for the office of Oriental Guide. Every Noble is not fitted to meet therigorous demands imposed upon Potentates.

So let’s be fair, honest, and wise in the all-important matter of electing to office only men who areeminently qualified for the job. We all know that with honor comes responsibility. And while thereis high honor associated with a Divan office, the ensuing responsibilities entail a lot of time-consuming, energy-consuming WORK! Eternal vigilance must be wisely and thoughtfully exercisedby the voting membership to perpetuate a high caliber of leadership!

UNIT NEWSAntique CaravanServing on the Divan, or as a Trustee, Unit Director or Club Presidentis an honor, privilege and responsibility afforded to very fewmembers. Obviously, these offices require leadership and decisionmaking, but the most important task, is bringing members together, and supporting both our fraternity and our hospitals. Syrian Shrinehas become an intergenerational fraternity with members around thetristate, 32 different states, and 3 countries. Your 2017 Templeofficers strived to provide programs and initiatives with individual, group, local and outside our tristate, meaning and impact. As theAntique Caravan ends their 45th year, under the direction of ChuckAynes, we are proud of our participation in 2017, and with theelections of our new offices, Jim Steele Steele (Director)and AlexSteidle (Asst Director), we are assured of our future…. unit memberswho share common values, including a commitment to our hospitalsand brotherhood. We would also like to congratulate the ShrineCenters 2018 offices elected in early December…. Join this unit,we have cars available, and they are free! GaryClownsHo-Ho-Ho. Merry Christmas and happy holidays to all. Tis the seasonof giving. And what would BARRELS like to have for Christmas?Barrels would like to have more membership participation in theyear of 2018.! Our clown unit is larger than it’s ever been in Syrianhistory. But it seems we still have just the average 10 or 12 membersdoing it all. I do realize that we have one of the youngest units ever.I also realize that a lot of our active members including myself arebecoming grandparents. So, for Christmas BARRELS would like tohave our new members and I’m not so new members step up a littlebit more do a little bit more parading go to the hospital little bitmore because yes, we do have that figure it out now. Our Templewith the help of some fantastic Potentates and a fantastic Recorderis someplace it has not been in many years we all should takeadvantage of all the great activities we have at our Temple all theFantastic parades we go to and all the extracurricular activities thatwe are invited to. Recently I received a phone call from one of ourmembers from years past. Which made me start thinking how manyother older clowns are out there? So, I’m reaching out to all theclowns from The Syrian Shrine Clown of the past…. you all are stilla very important part of our Shrine and clown unit family, the factthat you are in active or retired is not relevant. We still care aboutyou and would like to hear from you. So, if there’s anyone out therethat was a clown and would like to come back in, or just hang out, with or without face, please take the time to give me a call and letme know.Thank you for a fantastic Year and Merry Christmas andHappy Holidays to all and to all a good-night Barrels DaClownMini RacersWe all had a Blessed Thanksgiving with many friends and familylove ones to share with. We move forward to the end of the yearhaving our final business meeting at Thirsty’s Oasis in Nov. electingnew officers. Congratulations to our new Unit Director, Mike Miles. We have plans to participate in two Christmas parades in Delhi andAmelia bringing joy and laughter to the holiday festivities. Wewill continue selling tickets and planning for the upcoming Feb. 2018Syrian Shrine Circus looking to help make it bigger and better.Illness and health issues continue to challenge several of ourmembers with spine surgery, Carl Idler and Heart surgery, TimRedrow we continue to keep these Nobles in our prayers. MiniRacers look forward to the 2018 year supporting our own with GregPelfrey as Potentate and Tim Redrow as Chief Rabban. We will beworking and helping these fine Nobles as they take on their newrole moving our great temple forward in the community with hospitalawareness and fraternal love. As we bring 2017 to a close we saythanks to Rob Smith and all Divan, Trustees and office staff for thegreat work they did to make it a fantastic year. A special thanks toGary Caudill for his relentless efforts and hard work for our ShrineTemple and Nobles. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to allwith gifts of blessings and love as we remember the gift of ChristJesus, the true reason for the season. Doc Hakes

Flying FezMy heartiest congratulations for our extraordinary newly electedPotentate Ill. Sir Greg Pelfrey and his Lady Jacque. I also want toextend that congratulations to our Pote’s personal Aids, and notforgetting our Trustees and members of the Divan who are facedwith the grueling task of guiding the Temple in the right directionfor the coming year. I also need to include all our newly electedofficers, club Presidents and Unit Directors when together we willhave a successful year with pride in our hearts knowing the effortwe put in in supporting our Hospital and Children that need us to bethere. The words “Happy Holidays” have been misunderstood by somany in many cases. Digging deeper into that phrase you willrecognize the meaning behind these words. You see the threedominant Faiths we have are all around us. are so close yet so faraway. Internal strife between the three different beliefs as we seetaking place in Ireland, Israel, Iraq and now the USA are so close Ican keep on going with one story after another. I grew up in a worldthat was very dominant in their own belief known as the Holy Landwith all three faiths claiming it. We could start with Abraham, “TheFather of Many Nations” The first born was Ishmael the Father ofIslam and the second was Issacs the father of the Hebrews. So, thephrase “Happy Holiday” was created in that world we call the HolyLand. When this subject comes up I find myself preaching which Idon’t mean to do but this is our Biblical history from which theKoran and the New Testament were created. All three faiths are soclose in thei r bel ief and cul ture , common her i tage , yet therelationship is so strained and divided. Yes, it is the season to wishall a very Merry and Happy Christmas as I am still living in aChristian Nation, the last time I checked. Remember that one of themost glorious messes in the world is the mess in the living room onChristmas day. Don’t clean it up too quickly. Esalamu Alikom SamuelE Mattar [email protected] Clan 5How…deee from Clan 5! Fall has been busy time for the group. Don Meinzen 218-2380Shrine Golf LeagueGreetings Nobles and friends. Yes, the season is over, and we are lookingforward to next April. Just a reminder that a lot of conditioning, practiceputting, etc., in getting ready for next year. It’s a good time to startlining up your 2018 foursome. Now one little story…Seems an avidgolfer was involved in a terrible auto accident and was rushed to thehospital. Just before he was put under, the surgeon said, “I have somegood news and some bad news.” “The bad news is I have to removeyour right arm!” “O my God no!” cries the man. My golfing is over! Please Doc, what’s the good news?” “The good news is…I have anotherone to replace it with, but it’s a woman’s arm and I’ll need yourpermission before I can go ahead with the transplant.” “Go for it Doc,”says the man, “as long as I can play golf again.” The operation wentwell and a year later the man was out on the golf course when he bumpedinto the surgeon. “Hi, how’s the arm?” asks the surgeon. “Just great,”says the golfer. “I’m playing the best golf of my life. My new arm hasa much better touch, and my putt ing has really improved.””That’s great,” said the surgeon. “Not only that,” continued the golfer,my handwriting has improved, I’ve learned how to sew my own clothesand I’ve even taken up painting landscapes in watercolors.” “That’sunbelievable!” said the surgeon, “I’m so glad to hear the transplant wassuch a great success. Any side effects?” “Well just two,” said the golfer.Have trouble parallel parking and every time I feel a little sexy I alsoget a headache. We would like to takethis opportunity to congratulate our Potentate, Rob Smith and hisofficers for a very successful year and offer the 2018 Divan oursupport for the coming year. Then there’s the one about the Noble’swife that got so mad at him she packed his bags and told him to getout. As walked to the door she yelled, “And I hope you die a longslow and very painful death.” He turned around and said, “So nowyou want me to stay?” One more…Definition of Growing Old.First you forget faces, and then you forget names, then you forgetto zip up your fly. But even worse…then you forget to unzip! Myfriends, live life…laugh often…love much…and keep on smiling.Dick ManifoldHamilton Shrine ClubGreetings Nobles and friends. We need Ticket Sales, Program Ads, Mom & Dad’s Donations and your help at the Circus!Syrian Shrine Circus is a perfect way to help achieve our fundraising goals. You should take a great deal ofpride in our annual Syrian Shrine Circus, our next Circus, being our 97th. It is good, wholesome familyentertainment, presented in a safe environment. It’s a great way for us to connect with lots of people in thecommunity and remind them of what we do. It’s affordable! In fact, at a time when so many other events in thearea continue to raise their prices year after year, we’ve been able to keep our prices for tickets and novelties ata rate that’s comfortable for families. We’re also proud that the money we raise from the circus stays right herein the community, unlike other circuses that take the dollars with them when they leave. 100% of the proceedsof the annual Syrian Shrine Circus benefit the Syrian Shrine Center. This is a fraternal fundraiser for the SyrianShrine Center general operating fund. So, come to the Syrian Shrine Circus and help us keep doing the workwe’re so proud of!
