A Social network focuses on building online communities of people who share interest and activities of others.

Impact in India

If there is any revolution taking place in the Indian online space, It is the rise of Social Networking Sites.

And this is quite evident from the comScore’s recent report which said that in comparison to year 2007,there has been a 51% increase in the number of visitors on such site by the end of 2008.

This shows that Indian’s are too smitten by the Social Networking bugs like all other part of the world.

INDIANS LOVE ORKUT, BUT FACEBOOK IS SOON CATCHING UP…..

There is an explosion of users registering on the popular social networking sites. Orkut boasts of almost 12.8 Million users of Indian origin during december ’08.

Facebook, the world’s largest social networking site, is at the number 2 spot with 4 million visitors from India. However, the growth Facebook has seen dwarfs even Orkut.

Our very own homegrown SNS like minglebox, bharatstudent.com, and yaari.com, has substantial users.

In nutshell ,the current scenario of social networking in India is….

Orkut tops the list of the most visited social networking site with more than 12.8 million visitors. This means an increase of 81 % from the last year.

Orkut’s audience was three times the size of its nearest competitor in the category.

Facebook.com ranked at the number 2 spot with 4 million visitors. This has been an increase of 150 % as compared to the previous year.

Next in line at number 3 is the local social networking site Bharatstudent.com with 3.3 million visitors. This site showed an increase by 88 %.

hi5.com comes in next at number 4 with 2 million visitors, which means an increase by 182 %.

Why Orkut Getting Big???

By nature Indians, believe in Catholic theory of “Coming Together”. And we are inherently conditioned to search for other like us. Social Networking works out well for us in this regard because its offers an interest based segregation of individual.

Another aspect is of us that Social networking sites cleverly exploit is our over hinging on nostalgia. We tend to magnify memories and amplify times bygone.
