The Gospel According to Greg

Greg Taylor Greg Taylor Greg Taylor Greg Taylor [email protected] Sunday was a busy – but very good – day at FCC. We honored our Bible School teachers during both services, recognized our high school graduates with our graduate brunch, were blessed by the Signs and Songs expanded choir group, and experienced the final evening of youth groups and REVEAL for this school year. What a day! Our guest preacher and special speaker during the graduate brunch on Sunday was Bob Monts from Lincoln Christian University. Bob’s memorable message is one we all need to connect with: “Without a WHY, Your WHAT Doesn’t Really Matter.” Too many of us get caught up with the “What’s” of our lives – especially our spiritual lives – and we miss the more important quest. Why do we follow Jesus? Jesus answered this himself in John 10:10, when he stated “I’ve come to bring you LIFE – and LIFE to the full.” Because He Lives – we can face tomorrow! Last week, a special mailer went to every mailbox in the 61727 zip code inviting our friends and neighbors to join us at FCC this month for many special Sundays. We are hoping to continue to see several new faces this month – or families and/or individuals who have not been around FCC for a while. Can I encourage you to help us out by doing the following?

Greet everyone with a word of encouragement and a friendly smile or handshake. It’s OK if you don’t know each and every person – we are a big church and that happens. However, a friendly hello can really help someone feel welcome.

Page 3: The KKKKarusograph A ministry of - Clover Sitesstorage.cloversites.com/firstchristianchurch8/documents/05-08-12.pdf · The KKKKarusograph Volume 54 May 8, 2012 Issue 19 Volume 54

The Gospel According to Greg (cont’d)

Don’t say potentially hurtful things – even if you are trying to get a laugh. Instead of “wow, I bet lightning is going to strike” or “I haven’t seen you at church in years,” why not just welcome folks with a “really glad to see you!”

Finally, if you see someone by themselves and they

appear to be confused or unsure of where to go, step in and help them out. If you don’t know the answer to their question, take them to the welcome center or grab one of the ministry staff.

Thanks in advance for helping make FCC an especially friendly church! Here are the events of the big three Sundays left this month: May 13 – Mother’s Day – end of the year choir cantata and the kick-off to our six week sermon series “Women of the Faith.” May 20 – CLASS Act Kids present “That’s So Daniel!” You won’t want to miss what Melanie Cheatham and crew have planned. May 27 – ONE service Sunday at 9:30 am – Remembrance Sunday. Have a great week – see you Sunday! Greg P.S. GREAT job by Ernie and Adam with the 5K to raise 5K fundraiser race on Saturday. Over $6000.00 was raised for our summer mission trips to Cincinnati (Jr. High) and Joplin (Sr. High) – great job guys and thanks so much to everyone involved!

Young at Heart David Buck, Coordinator

God created us for righteousness, peace, and joy. Our physical body was not meant to house strife, whether it be in the form of worry, fear, hatred, bitterness, resentment, rage, anger, jealously, or turmoil. While the body can endure a lot of punishment and still survive, it cannot withstand the day after day stress of living with negative emotions. Peace and unity are primary goals for the church. The 4th of June, we will have Marcia Wise coming to give us an outstanding program that will bless us to no end. Don’t forget that the 4th of July, falls on our normal meeting so we will meet the following Wednesday, July 11. We’re hoping for Julie McClarey to come that day. “Sunshine is a matter of attitude.” - F. W. Borham The trip to Moline is almost full. It will be fun and full of fellowship on the 17th of May, listening to the big bands playing on the Celebration Cruise Ship. The stage play “Grease” will be delightful on the 22nd of June at Sullivan Little Theater in Sullivan. July will take us over to the Beef House for a great afternoon of Broadway music from Hopkins and Miller and band. Then off to Myer’s Dinner Theater to another fine trip in August. Kimmswick, Mo. river boat cruise is on the dock for October 4th. “Joy is a net of love by which you can catch souls.” - Mother Teresa We must pursue peace. Most people want peace, but they don’t do what they need to do in order to have it. The first step is to get a mind-set that you are going to pursue peace with God, yourself, and others. You will pursue peace? Think about it. What can you do to bring more peace into your relationships? “If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.” Romans 12:18 NIV

VBS Corner First, I want to thank all of you who signed up to be a Prayer Partner for our VBS workers. We really feel that your prayers are what makes our program so successful each year. You will soon receive a postcard with the name of the person helping in VBS that you are to pray for. But, please remember to pray for the whole program, “Adventures on Promise Island” - including the children and the missionary. (More about the missionary will be coming soon.) VBS is a terrific outreach to all the young people in our community. Are there young families in your neighborhood who might not be aware of this program and that it is open to everyone? Help us spread the word that we have great music, Bible stories, snacks, games, and that transportation is available. Again, we thank you for your support.

Thank you to everyone who participated in any way with our 5K to Raise 5K fundraiser. We raised over $6,000.00 to help with our summer mission trips for both the junior high and senior high.

Years ago, when I was in high school in Southern Indiana, my parents informed my brother and sister and I that we would be making a move to a new town where Dad had accepted a ministry. Apparently there were some leaders in the church, one in particular, who felt that it was time for Dad to move on and had suggested that he do so. (It was much more involved than that, but that’s the main idea!) I remember being hurt and angry at these people who pressured my Dad to find another ministry and uproot his family. For years I held a grudge against these people and one particular man who was the ringleader. Honestly, I finally realized that how I felt toward them really didn’t matter anymore. They certainly were not affected my “righteous anger” and I gained nothing from holding on to this attitude. Mark Roberts shares some thoughts from Ezekiel 35 which says: Because you nursed an ancient grudge, you handed the Israelites over to the sword in the time of their distress, during their final punishment. - Ezekiel 35:5

“How can we stop nursing an ancient grudge? Once again, I want to

emphasize that the power to do this rests in God, the source of peace and reconciliation. God alone will help us forgive those who have wronged us.

This happens as we take to heart the merciful forgiveness God has given us. In Ephesians 4:31-32 we read: "Put aside all bitterness, losing your temper, anger, shouting, and slander, along with every other evil. Be kind, compassionate, and forgiving to each other, in the same way God forgave you in Christ." We are able to put aside all bitterness and forgive others when we take seriously the way God has forgiven us in Christ. We will stop nursing grudges when we allow our hearts and minds to be transformed by the forgiving grace of God.” QUESTIONS FOR FURTHER REFLECTION: Do you have any ancient grudges? Are there people in your life whom you struggle to forgive? Have you spoken to God about this? I pray you can let go of bitter feelings that you may hold against some one from your past. You will be amazed how freeing this will be!
