The Gospel According to Greg

Greg Taylor Greg Taylor Greg Taylor Greg Taylor [email protected] Welcome to the first monthly edition of the K! As you are probably

aware, we are transitioning from a weekly newsletter to a monthly

publication, with the goal of the newsletter arriving in your mailbox on

or before the 1st of each month. In case this is new information for you,

please understand that our weekly bulletin for Sunday morning worship

services has been expanded to provide more information and news

items, and I will begin a brand new weekly blog on Monday mornings

on Monday, June 3. If you have any questions or comments about this

change, please feel free to call me at the church office or drop me an

email at [email protected].

June is an important month at FCC for a variety of reasons this year.

Please keep in mind the following:

Sunday morning, June 2 will bring an interactive question and

answer session in the Family Life Center at 9:30am related

to the “Next Steps” facility plan. Our roll out team of Ken

Klein and crew will be available at this meeting to answer any

and all question you might have about “Next Steps.” You can

access the information shared on May 19 and May 26 at our

website at the following address: www.clintonfcc.com and click

on the “Next Steps” tab.

Sunday morning, June 9 is Commitment Sunday at FCC for “Next

Steps.” We are inviting you to consider a one-time gift on the

9th, as well as a commitment for additional planned giving above

and beyond your regular giving for Phase 1 of “Next Steps.”

Special giving envelopes and commitment cards are available at

the welcome center and in the main office at FCC.

Sunday morning, June 16 will bring our bi-annual congregational meetings during both 8:15 and 11:00 services for the purpose of affirming those men being recommended to serve as elder at FCC. Three candidates are before the congregation: Mark Behrends, Chris Moody and Ty Osterbur. Having served as an elder at FCC before, Mark and Ty are eligible for a three-year terms, while Chris would serve an initial one year term, which could be followed by a three-year term with no required sabbatical. Current elders Jim Taylor and John Wise will conclude their initial four years of service on June 30 and are required to take a one year sabbatical from the eldership.

Vacation Bible School will take place this year from June 17-21,

once again bringing hundreds of young people to our church each morning! If you are unable to assist with the daily programming needs of VBS, would you consider assisting with set up on Sunday afternoon or tear down on Friday afternoon? We could really use several able-bodied volunteers to make the process as smooth as possible.

The Parables of Jesus! On May 26, I launched a brand new ten-

week look at some of the parables of Jesus, which will take us through the final Sunday in July. Some of the parables we study will be familiar and some will be less recognizable, but each “earthly story with a heavenly meaning” will allow us to continue our year-long theme at FCC: “It’s ALL about Jesus.”

Finally, I can’t talk about summer at FCC without putting in a plug

for Little Galilee Christian Camp. Don’t forget LGCC is one of God’s very special places and it happens to be literally in our own backyard! Camps for students of all ages run throughout the summer and FCC will pay half of the tuition for one camp session for your children and grandchildren. To see if a student qualifies for this grant or to get more information about Little Galilee, contact Karen Rice in the church office. I would love to see a hundred students from Clinton FCC go to camp at LGCC this summer!

Have a great summer – see you at FCC!

Boldly to the Throne of Grace It’s a typical day that begins, continues, and ends with crisis. A day of involvement in human need, battling with hypocrisy. A day that leaves you depleted, exhausted, ready to run away and quit. Except—he finds renewal in prayer! That was a typical day in the life of our Lord. Why should we be any different? As His servants, we are not to be greater than our Lord! A director of a mental hospital in England talked about therapies that counteract nervous diseases: “I would undoubtedly give first place to the simple habit of prayer!” Archbishop Temple has worded the experience of thousands: “When I pray coincidences happen. When I stop praying, coincidences stop happening!” No wonder we are tempted not to pray! “Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has gone through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet was without sin. Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.” Hebrews 4:14-16 Make good use of our hospital prayer list and our special needs list, along with our loved ones in the nursing homes.

We rejoice with and congratulate Andrew & Andrew & Andrew & Andrew & Lindsey HanesLindsey HanesLindsey HanesLindsey Hanes on the birth of their son, Micah Micah Micah Micah James HanesJames HanesJames HanesJames Hanes, who was born May 22, 2013. Young at Heart David Buck, Coordinator

Sometimes, God pushes us out of our comfort zone and into a growing zone. He sees that we are afraid to take a step, so He gives us a good strong push. Nobody likes to be pushed, especially when we are thrown into unfamiliar or uncomfortable territory. Yet you need to understand that what is unfamiliar or uncomfortable may also be exciting and beneficial. “Nothing is worth more than this day.” - Geothe On June 6th we’ll have the Grider’s from southern Indiana singing some new songs to the Lord. On the 3rd of July, we’ll enjoy the Southern Gospel music by the Prime-Timers Quartet that have come to us by popular request. “If I had a single flower for every time I think about you, I could walk forever in my garden.” - Claudia Grandi The next trip will be the 22nd of June to Sullivan’s Little Theater on the Square for a stage play “Something Funny Happened On the Way to the Forum.” Good food and songs from Broadway will make our day the 10th of August, as we’ll enjoy Hopkins and Miller bringing us famous music and singing. Then on September 5th we’ll have a great lunch and watch the stage play “Annie” at the Myer’s Dinner Theater. “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. “ Matthew 6:34 (NIV) What’s behind you is not nearly as important as what lies in front of you. Everything you’ve been through was preparation for where you are right now. Disappointments, challenges, and failures were not meant to destroy you. They were meant to strengthen you, to build your character, to give you fortitude to accomplish your God given destiny. “This is the day which the Lord has made; Let us rejoice and be glad in it.” Psalm 118:24 (New American Standard Bible)

Sunday, June 16th will be the bi-annual congregational meetings for the purpose of affirming the men who were nominated to service as elders at FCC. The meetings will take place during the 8:15 and 11:00 a.m. worship services.

The church has a white wooden lifeguard chair that was originally built as a prop. It is no longer needed and is taking up

space. If anyone is interested in taking this chair, please call the

church office.

VBS Corner This is the last VBS Corner, so it has a lot of important information in it. You might want to cut it out and put it up on the refrigerator. First, if your child is riding a bus, the registration paper must be in by June 10. The bus routes are a big job to work out and we want to be certain that every child has a ride. We do encourage all parents to get the registration papers in soon. You can drop them off at the church office, leave them at the welcome center or the VBS table, or have the kids bring them to their Sunday School class. Then, when Kingdom Rock starts on June 17 all the children from 4-years-old through those going into 5th grade should come in the sanctuary doors on Jackson Street. All junior high young people should go to the Cable Building. We will again encourage all of them to bring one can of food each day to help our benevolent room. This is entirely your choice if you wish to participate. And one more thing I want to add to this last VBS Corner is a big THANK YOU to Peggy Jones for all the work she does for VBS. She has forms saved on the computer that have to be updated every year. Lots and lots of photocopies to be made for everything from sign-up sheets to coloring sheets. Just ordering all the VBS supplies is a big job. We couldn’t do VBS without her knowledge and help. So remember to tell her how much we appreciate her.

Attention All Primary Department Kids This Sunday, June 2nd at 9:30 a.m. the new summer program, Passport to Adventure, will begin. [email protected] As many of you know, I have been living in Normal, Illinois for the past couple of years as I finish college at Illinois State. Time has really flown by at ISU, and I now find myself back in Clinton and working at FCC. I can tell you, it is really nice being back in Clinton, and helping out in various ways around the church and the community. I saw many of you at the May Day’s Pageant. There was a great crowd that came out to support the young ladies that participated. I must say, it was so much fun being the emcee for the event! With summer now here and changes in weather, activities and schedules, FCC isn’t left out - we are having some changes of our own. Attendance at first service Jr. Church has risen to 20-30 students. To help meet some of the needs of Jr. Church and our younger students, we launched a new Beginner Church for first service children 3-years-old through Kindergarten. Lois Bell has really taken the “bull by the horns” in leading this new program. I appreciate Lois and the hard work she is putting into this so we can better teach our little ones about Jesus. I’m excited to work with Lois! I’d also like to thank Cassandra Benton. She leads the second service Beginner Church and has really become a great resource for me and Lois. Cheers to these ladies! Another change that has happened is the relocation of Jr. Church and the implementation of our new wristband check-in system. Jr. Church is now held in the “Primary Area.” My hope is this will make it a lot easier for parents and especially visitors by centralizing all grade level programming. Let me highlight a few things about these changes:

The Dunkin’ Pick-Me-Up With Cody Cont.

1. When you come to church for worship and/or Sunday School with your 1st - 5th grade student, you will go to the “Children’s Ministry Check-In” area in the basement of the church. 2. Your child will be assigned a bracelet with a number. The parent/adult who brings your child to church and the child will each get the assigned wristbands. 3. We ask that no one use the back staircase. We want everyone to go to the check-in area. 4. We are not allowing any parents/adults to pass through the “Primary Area” for security reasons. The exceptions are if you are helping with Jr. Church or you are unable to use the back stairs behind the sanctuary to get to adult classrooms. If you must use the elevator we would gladly let you go through. We ask you communicate your need to the Jr. Church monitor at the “Children’s Ministry Check-In” table. In other exciting news...be looking in the bulletin and future “K’s” for information on road trips for our junior high students this summer. In closing, I’d like to say that with some of these changes we are going to learn as we go. The volunteers helping with these programs have been collaborating together extensively to try to come up with the best solutions. I’m waiting in anticipation to see how God is going to shape and unfold this summer. FCC has a lot going for itself, and to be a part of it right now is exciting. As Zac Efron sings in High School Musical 1, “We’re all in this together!” I was singing this to myself on the way to Kankakee with Adam this week. Feel free to use this for your motivation. I do! I may just have to sing this tune for VBS.

Adventures with Adam continuedcontinuedcontinuedcontinued Lately I have been thinking a lot about change. What does it mean

individually and what does it mean in the church. Many people embrace change and many avoid it at all costs. We all react differently to it. The obvious reality of life is that we all have to change and have to be a part of change often.

Sometimes we are in control of change and sometimes we aren’t. We are undergoing a lot of change at our church. We have everything from new small groups starting, to new insurance regulations, to Ernie being called to a new ministry in Fort Wayne, IN. The question that we have to ask ourselves in the midst of any sort of change is, “What is my response going to be?” Jesus knew when he taught and wanted to engage certain groups he needed to change the way he presented his message. The message was always the same, but the way he presented and interacted with each group was different. He wanted everyone to come to the saving power of the cross.

All to often when it comes to faith and the church we get very content with where we are. Our walk with God should always be changing. We should be constantly striving and yearning to grow more in our faith. Think about it this way, when you have a best friend, you want to spend time with them often. Why? Because you want to know them better and you enjoy their company. The same should be true of our relationship with God. We shouldn’t get content with knowing God “enough”. There is a certain amount of effort and change that needs to be constantly happening. Church is really the same way. Gene Appel said at the Intentional Church conference a little over a month ago, “A church that doesn’t change will die”. We must constantly be evaluating and pursuing what our best mode of action is to effectively reach our congregation as well as those who have yet to enter our doors. Often times we are doing things that are effective and need no change, but probably just as often we need to mix some things up to see how we can better serve the community and congregation. I would like to ask that question again, “What is my response going to be?” When that change comes up we have several options. 1) We can fight it tooth and nail (knowing that it will probably happen anyway), 2) We can ignore it 3) We can embrace it and help others get alongside the vision. The REAL question is: What Would Jesus Do?

Top Ten Ways To Laugh At Work Jim Coonce Jim Coonce Jim Coonce Jim Coonce [email protected]

I came across this and decided to share with you all. To read the entire blog,

visit: http://hillpen.com/2012/06/29/top-ten-ways-to-laugh-more-at-work/

I have had my share of insanely-awful Tuesdays. My mornings usually

consisted of lukewarm coffee, screaming children, re-heated muffins, and

boring NPR stories. I was stuck in traffic, with bad hair and pants that are an

inch too short, and when I got to work I noticed half-done reports and a

computer keyboard covered in the crumbs of yesterday’s Subway sandwich.

Is that really the day care calling to say my kid has a fever? Do I honestly

have a meeting in ten minutes? It’s only Tuesday for crying out loud.

But sometimes the negative can be turned into the positive. It’s a by-product

of being a writer, I suppose, where I look at life as one huge collection of

stories. But I’ve had to ask myself – was I good about finding the humor at

work all those years?

Here are the Top Ten Things that I learned after so many years that helped

me start to enjoy work again. To bring humor back into my working life. To

learn to really live a little:

(1) Don’t take things so darn seriously. Humor creates a

psychological distance. After all, if you don’t get that report turned in and

your boss gets mad, and you end up being fired, you could work at Dairy

Queen and eat Blizzards all day. Think of the toppings!

(2) Get out of the office for lunch. This is key so your head isn’t

buried inside your computer from 7 am until closing time. So, just leave. If

you aren’t hungry, drive around. Pick up some iced tea. Head to a park and

walk a bit. But take a mid-day break.

(3) Think of your commute as a very special time, not some horrible

long wasted hour. Listen to music that uplifts you. Pray. Call a friend or

check out a book on tape. Enjoy a cup of good coffee.

Everyday Worship Top Ten Ways To Laugh At Work cont.

(4) Be the bearer of silly little gifts. Everyone brings something

different to the table in a workplace. Some people are more

organized. Others are great with follow-up. Some are good

listeners. Reward those talents by leaving candy or gum or little treats on

their desk with lame, corresponding sayings that you find online or make

up. You’re worth a mint to me (Mentos)! The way you listened to that

client was so smart (Smartees!) Your organizational skills are worth all the

cash in the world (100 grand!)

(5) At every opportunity, send out poems (Today is just another day,

it’s Wednesday in December, but if you have a moment at all, can you call

that counsel member?) I use www.rhymezone.com so much I think they

created that site exclusively for me.

(6) Be a gossip killer. When someone comes into your office, closes

the door, and says “I’m so sorry but I just have to get this off my chest” and

then begins to rant about someone with glee, think strategy. It’s fine to

listen. But when they are done, ask them if they often have to replace

buttons on that blazer or start a conversation about space exploration. Don’t

give in to employee-bashing. It’s not helpful, it ruins the office mood, it

destroys morale, and it’s hateful.

(7) Send notes of praise and thanks all the time, to anyone you can

think of. Email someone’s boss and blind-copy them

(8) Smile. When someone walks into your office, stop your train of

thought long enough to let a smile erupt on your face. Even if it’s forced. If

you hold it long enough, it might turn real.

(9) Despite advice to the contrary to form “lunch bunches” and all

kinds of work potlucks, I’m not big on dining together with work colleagues

all the time. After all – you see these people enough. Do you really want to

sit together in the break room heating up leftover lasagna? Find your own

space. This makes everyone happier and more interesting.

(10) And finally, admit when you are wrong. Apologize when

necessary, and embrace your faults. No one can find humor, warmth, and

joy in the workplace if you are constantly trying to fight battles of will, or

cover something up, or lie to save yourself.
