Jay Michno is a student at Red River College’s Business Administration Diploma program, majoring in Human Resources.

Jay’s involvement with the Red River College Students’ Association Board proved to be a great source of experience as he was able to use this affiliation to view issues and topics through the lens of a Human Resources professional. At board meetings, Jay and his team would regularly discuss and vote on topics that affect the well-being of students who made up their constituency. As a result, Jay dedicated a lot of his time at Red River College talking with students, finding out what issues they are facing and how the Students’ Association can better their college life experience.

Jay also had the opportunity as a member of the Students’ Association Governance Committee to be involved in the Association’s first-ever governance review. This review was conducted by an outside firm and was overseen by the committee. Major topics of the review included student engagement, employee and executive policies, and bylaws review.

Jay believes that being involved in these activities has given him an opportunity to work to improve his experience within the Strategy and Engagement functional areas of the CPHR Competency Framework.

People First HR Services is a People Corporation company

F.H. Black & Company Chartered Professional Accountants Inc. (FHB) was established in 1990 as a Chartered Professional Accounting firm located in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

From 2011–2015 the company expanded into new business areas such as enterprise accounting and outsourced human resource management. FHB’s growth was evident and as their client base continued to develop, they grew to a mid-sized, multi-department organization. Recognizing their internal human resource strategy required a comprehensive assessment and overhaul to better align with the expanding firm’s long-term goals and objectives, they set out to better understand life at the company from an employee perspective.

In 2016, the senior management team began meeting one-on-one with each employee for an in-depth discussion, creating a customized “total compensation report” to be reviewed with each employee, and holding firm-wide meetings to evaluate existing policies. In addition to internal feedback, FHB researched other industry and nationwide initiatives that could potentially drive the construction of their own initiative.

In January 2017, based on the compilation of information collected, the Employee Development and Awards initiative was designed, focusing on reducing or eliminating turnover, developing employees, increasing firm productivity and profitability and rewarding employees to the highest degree possible.

From conception to realization of this strategic HR initiative, FHB came to understand the importance of employee development and rewards and the impact it has on the lives of others. Aligning employee goals with organizational goals while offering significant high value rewards resulted in the achievement of all key objectives.

Mosaic is a not-for-profit neighbourhood language learning program and family resource network. They offer English classes paired with quality child care, settlement and parenting support to newcomer parents. The programs offered help participants develop their English language skills and strengthen community connections while their children socialize in a safe and educational environment.

Mosaic was founded 10 years ago by a small group who had a passion to provide a level of support to newcomers that did not exist in Manitoba. The organization has grown to 72 employees with several locations in Winnipeg serving more than 1,000 participants with diverse backgrounds. They recognize the Treaty One land they reside on by including education and blanket exercises for all stakeholders.

In 2016, Mosaic designed and implemented an Employee Benefit and Registered Retirement Savings Plan in order to provide value to all staff members. It was important to the organization that both full and part-time employees were provided coverage regardless of the number of hours worked. A multifaceted benefit plan, utilizing products from numerous insurance carriers, was designed to accommodate coverage for the diversified employee group.

Since its execution of these plans, Mosaic has worked closely with staff to help increase their understanding of the Canadian healthcare system and to educate on how this opportunity can support them and their families. As a result, staff are utilizing their benefits for both physical and mental health care regularly, seeking medical assistance they previously did not have access to.

The leadership team at Mosaic is not only dedicated to their cause, but continually work to find creative solutions to support individuals.

Founded in 1877, the University of Manitoba is Western Canada’s first University.

Since 2011, the University has been utilizing a custom online recruiting system. In January of 2017 they learned this existing system would not be supported past December and a new cloud-based, non-customized version would replace the existing system. Too many critical gaps existed between the customized version and the generic version to continue with the vendor. Ultimately a new system capable of capturing all critical aspects of recruitment within a single system was required in an exceptionally short timeline.

The project team was highly structured with well-defined roles and responsibilities. Aside from the standard roles, the team reached out to a number of external stakeholders and central administration recognizing that clients should be involved in the project design and execution. Weekly team meetings were held where technical and business members provided updates, discussed issues, made decisions and talked about next steps. A good rapport was built between the two teams and was critical in carrying out the work.

The University of Manitoba successfully tested and implemented the new system on time and in budget. Their outstanding project work introduced a number of needed enhancements and provided a user-friendly platform. Multiple success factors were met including a means to advertise positions, enabling tracking and filling of support staff positions, providing union reports electronically and keeping an efficient, paperless process. As a result, there is in an increase in applications and a decrease in time spent on the recruitment process.

In 2015, the University of Winnipeg approved a University Strategic Directions Plan articulating the University’s deep commitment to growing leaders through a focus on excellence and accessibility, especially for traditionally under-represented groups such as new Canadians, refugees and Indigenous students.

In early 2017, the University began a multi-year initiative to develop and implement a new UW Human Resource Strategy. It began by completing a comprehensive review of the HR department and providing executives with a “report card” concerning the alignment of the department and resources with the University’s strategic direction now and in the future. This rigorous process involved multiple internal stakeholder meetings, working sessions with HR leaders and associates, and comparative external research and analysis.

The impact of this review has been substantial. From a stakeholder perspective, it has provided an opportunity to review and confirm the HR department structure, and major initiatives planned for both short and longer-term. It has also ensured the focus of the HR team is on those initiatives University leadership has agreed are going to contribute positively to the institution and support the Strategic Directions. For the team, it allowed the development of deeper relationships internally and an increase in understanding of how their work directly links to the University’s goals.

The new strategy is focused, understood and supported by both the HR team and university leadership. HR has been transformed and is truly seen as a strategic and valued partner.
