Principal’s Report

DANGEROUS CONDITIONS TOMORROW

There is a catastrophic warning for fires tomorrow as determined by the NSW Rural Fire

Service. The school will still be open for students to attend and all staff are aware of

emergency procedures should there be any issues. We are very fortunate in Forestville to

have a great deal of infrastructure surrounding us on all sides and are a relatively good

distance from dense bushland. However, I am aware that many of our students homes are

close to the bush so there may be high levels of concern by our students about their

homes.

I was part of an evacuation with some of my family over the weekend in the Port

Macquarie/Wauchope area, so have had recent exposure myself to the high levels of

anxiety that occur with these events and want our students to feel safe and confident.

Principal’s Report

We have reviewed all of our emergency procedures today. We will ensure that if the

weather becomes very hot and/or smoky and windy, that students will be kept inside

with air conditioning and staff will ensure their safety. You may choose to keep your

child/children home or with you tomorrow, which is understandable considering this

forecast for Sydney. We will, however, still be opening the school and classes will be

held as normal. Continual reviews will be in place during the day and we will continue to

inform parents at regular intervals via the Skoolbag App of the situation at school. The

Pedlars’ Parade will still go ahead but will be conducted in the morning at 9.30am when

the weather is at its coolest.

Please let us know if your child will not be attending tomorrow so that we can do our

class rolls early.

As I am attending a conference for the next 3 days, Ms Cathie Howe and Mrs Sonya

Cordaiy, the Deputy Principals will be managing the school tomorrow. They are both

experienced, capable educators and will ensure all students and staff are kept informed

and safe. They will ensure regular alerts go out through the day to reassure our

community about the situation at school and the wellbeing of all students and staff.

SCHOOL WORKS

Our STEAM Hub, Learning Support room and Senior Boys toilets have all had their

roofing improvements completed. This week the KI and KS classrooms will be reroofed

and the students will be sharing with KF and KH until the work is completed.

Due to changes in the Departments requirements with new roofing and guttering the

Steam Hub and Kindergarten block will have different colour guttering and downpipes to

the rest of the school, as will the Learning Support room and Senior Boys toilet block.

The department requires Colorbond Ultra to be used on all rooves now and there are

very limited colours.

On Wednesday and Thursday a new electronic sign will be erected adjacent to the

Darley Road entrance. There will be some changes in the access to the school on these

two days so please follow any signage or instructions by staff.

FORESTVILLE SKI/SNOWBOARD TEAM

Teira Jansen, one or our active parents, is organising a ski team to represent Forestville

at the Interschools Australian Snowsports Competition in the first week of the July

holidays 2020. Please contact Teira at [email protected] and she will send more

information. There are a large range of events from Alpine to snowboard, and students

don’t need to be highly proficient skiers. This is a very exciting opportunity for our snow

loving families.

Principal’s Report

GROWTH MINDSET- RESOURCEFULNESS – The POWER TO Shape the Future

Resourcefulness is the ability possessed by successful kids to find and use available

resources to achieve goals, problem-solve, and shape their futures. We encourage

children to be resourceful when we set high expectations and support them to

accomplish their goals. When we teach them to be strategic thinkers and adaptable

problem-solvers, they learn to live without rigid rules or preconceived ideas.

Children learn to use and apply knowledge as they gain skills in planning, organising,

decision-making and problem-solving. Together, these skills are the building blocks of

resourcefulness. When children can imagine multiple outcomes, set their own

objectives, experiment with new approaches, and negotiate challenges, they make

important connections between knowledge and goal achievement.

As parents, we help children become resourceful when we walk beside them through

the everyday practice of being goal-directed rather than setting objectives and problem-

solving for them.

10 Ways to Foster Your Child’s Resourcefulness

Share Stories of Resourceful People

Let go of perfectionism

Apply problem solving strategies including multiple solutions

Reinforce the power of reflecting on events and situations

Involve children in making some decisions

Encourage scientific discovery

Promote both independence and collaboration

Expose your children to positive role models

Teach your children positive skepticism

Make resourcefulness a family value – don’t give your child the solution to all their

problems or take their problems away from them. Rather, help them to be

resourceful and find their own.
