Principal’s Report
.SCHOOL UNIFORM
At Forestville we encourage students to have respect for, and pride in, their school and each
other. Students’ school uniforms are indicative of this pride and as such reflect the standards
of the school. We are having a few problems with the very ragged appearance of some of
our more senior students’ hats. They arrive in uniforms that are clean and well presented but
their hats look like they have ‘been through the mill’!
There are still many months of school left for the remainder of the year and at times
students need to wear their hats outside the school in a representative capacity and these
rather ragged specimens are not demonstrative of our ethics and standards.
I am respectfully requesting that parents and carers have a close look at their children's hats
and provide either a new or second-hand hat which demonstrates their pride in the school.
We would like to work with our community to highlight the value of the school and the
uniform, so that we don’t have to put into place any restrictions associated with wearing
these hats. The photograph below is indicative of the type of hat we have been seeing.
NAPLAN
Our Year 3 and Year 5 students were very cooperative and conscientious over the last
2 weeks with our first online NAPLAN process. Many schools had issues, however, we
only had a few minor problems and any that arose were easily solved. I would like to
thank all of our parents for supporting your children through this testing program
and our teachers for assisting and reassuring students.
ART OF LEADERSHIP
Ms Cathie Howe and I will be attending a very intensive 3 day course in the city from
Monday – Wednesday this week. Mrs Sonya Cordaiy and Ms Katy Costa will be
leading the school for the 3 days. As our fantastic annual Band Camp is on at this
time Mrs Cordaiy will take my place for the performance at the completion of the
camp, but I will spend some time with the band students and staff/parents on
Monday evening as I would like to be part of the event.
GROWTH MINDSET
How can you help your child adopt a growth mindset?
Showing your child how to learn through failure basically means helping them to adopt
a growth mindset. In order to help them do that, you should praise their effort, and not
just the achievement.
Top tips for supporting a growth mindset in your child:
Talk about the difference between a fixed and growth mindset. Explain what they
are and the importance of understanding that failing is an essential part of learning.
Talk about the brain. Explain that our brains are something that can be changed. The
more we practice and work at a skill or ability, the stronger the connections in our brain
associated with that skill become. Over time, it becomes easier and more natural for our
brain to do these skills - like using a muscle. Great athletes weren’t just born being able
to perform the way they do, it took hours and hours of practice and effort.
Praise effort. Also praise struggle and persistence. Congratulate them on choosing
difficult tasks; mention that you are impressed and proud when they put time into
learning. Compliment improvement.
Encourage them to practice skills. Give them support to continue working at new
skills and praise them for embracing new ones.
Celebrate successes. Particularly little successes, which are often forgotten - like
solving a difficult problem, or the act of trying to do something.
As with all things, having a growth mindset is something we should endeavour to
practice ourselves. Your child will understand how to learn from failure by watching
your attitudes and behaviours.
Thank you for your support,
Louisa Wellings

another day on or before 6 June.
If your child wishes to try out for a competition PSSA team they will be walking to Melwood
Oval for the trials and they must return their permission note by this Thursday.
The PSSA teams for Term 2/3 are:
