Principal’s Report

THANK YOU TO OUR P&C AND COMMUNITY

A huge thank you to our wonderful community for rallying together to make our bake sale

and BBQ a phenominal success on Saturday. Many of our parents worked tirelessly over both

the preceeding week and the day to raise a significant amount of money for the school. This

level of commitment and effort is appreciated immeasurably and the benefits of the work will

go directly to the children of Forestville. What a great network is being created by our

fantastic Forestville P&C and parent community and what lucky recipients of this hard work

are the students and teachers in the school. With sincere thanks.

NAPLAN

Our Years 3 and 5 students participated in the NAPLAN Writing and Reading tests last week

and will be completing Langauage Conventions and Numeracy this week. Our students are

completing the online tests for the first time and we have been very proud of their response

and attitude. The tests have been administered with very few minor issues and I would like to

thank all parents for ensuring their children are relaxed and are at school promptly for the

tests to be administered.

The NAPLAN tests are one test on one day, and provide indicators for schools to use to

make improvements in teaching and learning. It is not a final measure of your child’s

potential or ability. We would like students to be relaxed and do their best, and that is

all we can expect of them. It is just another day in their learning journey.

ART OF LEADERSHIP

Ms Cathie Howe and I will be attending a very intensive 3 day course in the city next

week from Monday - Wednesday. This course is highly sought after and will provide us

with frameworks and strategies to ensure Forestville continues to thrive, and enable

our future focussed learners to be the best they can be. Mrs Sonya Cordaiy and Ms

Katy Costa will be leading the school for the 3 days. As our fantastic annual band camp

is on at this time Mrs Cordaiy will take my place for the performance at the completion

of the camp, but I will spend some time with the band students and staff/parents on

Monday evening as I would like to be part of the event.

GROWTH MINDSET

Failure is a word and a concept that our students often fear. In today’s society, with its

focus on success, celebrity, fame and wealth, failure is linked with a sense of not being

good enough. But actually, failure is a hugely important part of learning. By failing, we

see where we need to improve. As the inventor and entrepreneur Thomas Edison said,

‘I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that don’t work.’

Those students who always perform well, who always get top scores in their tests, are

often the ones who find failure most difficult to cope with. They see the failure as a

reflection of their lack of ability. But it is the attitude to failure that can turn around a

learning experience. We need to help our students to see failure as a motivation for

improvement. The theory of Growth Mindset is about our belief in our ability to

improve. Instead of thinking, ‘I’ve failed at this. Therefore, I’m no good at it. I’m going

to give up.’, we want our students to think, ‘I’ve failed at this. How can I get better?’
