Principal’s Report
Our first week for 2020 went very smoothly, except for a few issues with a power surge
causing some classes to be without electricity for a while. Students have settled in with their
new classes and teachers are reporting their positive and cooperative behaviour and great
attitude to learning.
Welcome to our 2020 Kindergarten students and their families. We had a fantastic start to
the year with our new students entering their classrooms calmly and parents enjoying a
morning tea get together under the Cola. A big thank you to the P&C and Year 1 parents for
providing this morning tea. The P&C also organised a lunch at Forestville RSL today for
Kindergarten families to begin their friendships and journey together.
In the mornings, the playground area outside the Kindergarten rooms can be quite chaotic
with many families coming to school. In order to settle Kindergarten in more readily a hand
bell will be rung at 8.55am. This is a prompt for all parents/carers to give a ‘short and sweet’
goodbye then usher the children to their class lines so they are ready when the whole
school bell rings. Long, lingering goodbyes and standing beside class lines for that last
goodbye can be very difficult for our Kindergarten students, and we would like their start at
school to be very smooth and positive.

Parent/Teacher Information Evenings – in classrooms
Principal’s Report
It is not a time when questions about individual children can be answered. If you have any
concerns or would like to speak to your child’s teacher about any issues please make an
appointment with them so that an in-depth discussion can take place.
We will be conducting Parent/Teacher interviews in weeks 9-11 this term.
We are hoping to have 2 volunteer parents for each classroom this year. One to liaise with
the P&C and the other to share classroom information, but you may like to team up and do
both roles together. This help is invaluable and we would like to thank those volunteers in
advance.
Kindergarten: Wednesday 19 February 5.30- 6.30pm
Year 1: Wednesday 19 February 6.30-7.30pm
Year 2: Wednesday 12 February 6.30-7.30pm

Year 4: Tuesday 18 February 6-7pm
Year 5: Wednesday 12 February 6-7pm
Year 6: Wednesday 12 February 6-7pm
Student Leadership
Student Leadership is highly valued in our school and I am delighted to announce our Year 6
leadership team for 2020. They will meet with me on Mondays at morning tea time to ‘nut out’
any student issues and come up with ideas and strategies to benefit the school. Last year’s
team came up with the idea of recycling drink containers and worked out a system to alleviate
the lost property issues. They also led the Year 6 cohort to raise funds for a new mural in the
school. This will hopefully soon be designed and in place. Thank you to Year 6, 2019.
Our team for 2019 are:
School Captains: Lulu E and Lachlan P
Vice Captains: Charlotte P and Felix C
Prefects: Olivia P, Lucy F, Owen D and Sandy F
We have many other Year 6 leaders whose roles will be highlighted in future newsletters.
PARENT INFORMATION EVENINGS
Parent Information meetings will commence next week. All meetings will be held in your
child’s individual classroom. These meetings provide an overview of the classroom programs
and allow you to meet with your child’s teacher.
Principal’s Report
Swimming Carnival
The school swimming carnival is on this coming Friday, 7 February, and it is always
competitive and fun. Students at Forestville are always ready to ’Give it a Go’ and
participate in their events. As most children compete, it is a big job to time and record all
races, to marshal the events, and keep the carnival flowing. We really appreciate the
assistance given by parents to time-keep, be judges and be our ‘lifeguards’, as it ensures
the carnival runs smoothly.
We would like to ask parents to pack their children plenty to eat and drink on the day rather
than provide large sums of money for the canteen. We discourage the consumption of soft
drinks, hot chips and sweets and would prefer our students to stay in their area where they
can be supervised. Also, if parents would like to take their child home from the carnival can
you please be sure to sign them off with the time on their class list. These will be on the
recording table at the carnival.
For your reference students born in the following years will be in the corresponding age
groups:-
2012 – 8 Years - Junior
2011 – 9 Years - Junior
2010 – 10 Years - Junior
2009 – 11 Years – 11 Years
2008/7 – 12/13 Years - Senior
Please talk to your child about which age group they are in so that they don’t become
confused on the day. (eg: if your child doesn’t turn 9 until November and is currently 8,
they still need to be in the 9 year age group as each race is decided by the year they were
born which would have been 2011.) Please also ensure your child is at school by 8.15am
to have their name marked off as the buses leave at 8.30am sharp.
It will be a very exciting and memorable carnival day, and I’m sure we’ll see some
wonderful swimming
Many thanks for your support

P & C
Welcome Back!
A huge welcome back to school from the P&C. We hope your children are settling in well.
We look forward to meeting all our new and returning families in 2020.
As many of you will know, in the first few weeks of term, parents from each class are
asked to volunteer to be a Class Parent or P&C Rep. More than one person can hold
each position and the responsibilities can be shared. A brief summary of the key
responsibilities of each role is shown below and a full description is available from the
P & C.
Class Parent -
• Collate a Class Contact List
• Liaise with teacher on a regular basis
• Communicate with class on behalf of teacher and school
• Organise social events for the class
P&C Rep -
• Communicate with class on behalf of the P&C
• Encourage support and participation in P&C events
• Attend P&C meetings or organise another person from the class to attend
Both of these positions are critical to the smooth running of the school and your support is
hugely appreciated.
Any questions, or for the full description, please email [email protected]

The Sydney Academy of Chess is offering chess coaching on Monday mornings from
8.00am to 8.55am in Mr Ellis’ classroom (4E). Chess is a valuable activity for children,
developing their logical thinking skills, concentration and discipline, as well as being a
source of much enjoyment! What better way to combine learning and fun!
The classes will begin with an interactive lecture by an experienced coach. During the
second half of the class, children will play games against each other, putting newly learned
strategies into practice. As the term progresses and the children become proficient in all
the basics, the lectures will move on to more complex ideas such as strategy, middle-game
ideas and chess technique.
All levels and ages of players are welcome as long as they are interested in improving
their chess skills. The program will start on Monday, 10 February and finish on Monday, 6
April and will cost $90 ($10/session for nine sessions). Payment is required prior to
commencement of the lessons.
Please return the note which you will find on our school website, with payment to the
office by Thursday, 6 February. All questions should be directed to Mr Ellis.
James Ellis – Chess coordinator
The PSSA teams for Term 1/2 are:
Junior Boys Cricket (Years 4 and 5)
Senior Boys Cricket (Years 5 and 6)
Junior Girls A and B T-ball (Years 4 and 5)
Senior Girls A and B Softball (Years 5 and 6)
Senior Boys (Yrs 5-6) Eagle Tag
Junior Mixed Eagle Tag (Yrs 3- 4)
Because of constraints on venues and resources only a limited number of students will be
selected for teams. Whilst we encourage all students to trial, they should be aware that
not every student will make a team.
Please contact Mr Ellis if you have any questions.
Any students who would like to play chess against other students should come to 4E in the
second half of lunch on Mondays, starting next Monday. Those students who do not know
how to play will be instructed by Mr. Ellis so that they learn the rules and basic strategy.
Those students looking for professional chess instruction should take part in the Chess
Instructional Lessons on Monday mornings. The registration form for these can be
downloaded from our website. Please contact Mr. Ellis if you have any questions about
either of these programs.

Swimming carnival
The FPS swimming carnival is THIS FRIDAY- 7 February.
Swimming Carnival information
Please have your child at the school by 8:20am this Friday so they are ready to board the
bus at 8:30am. Students can wear their sports uniform and/or house colours and have been
asked to wear swimming costumes underneath their clothing. As many know we will have a
25m freestyle event for Year 3 and 4 students ONLY. These boys and girls events will be
held after the 50m freestyle and anyone who has swum in the 50m is not allowed to take
part. There is not a 25m event at the zone level so successful swimmers in this event will not
progress to the zone level in the 25m.
Event information and the program are posted on the website which should take care of most
questions. There will be a canteen* available to students, but only at scheduled times, so
students should pack their morning tea and lunch as usual. Finally, we are greatly
appreciative of all the parent helpers who have already volunteered to help on the day. If you
would also like to assist and have no yet notified, please email Molly Ingram via the school
email address [email protected]
*The Warringah Aquatic Centre canteen has changed and does not sell nearly as many
sugar based products as in the past. Students should not need to bring any money to the
carnival as a packed lunch, drink and morning tea should suffice.
Parking at the swimming carnival
Please note that parking restrictions in Aquatic Reserve car park apply – this is a 3 hour
time limit.
