Preparation for the Season of Lent in 2019

The season of Lent is here again! This week we shall begin the 40

days journey of Lent with Ash Wednesday, towards the great

Feast of Easter. It is a time of grace for everyone to think deeply

about the Love of God for us, when His Son suffered and died

for our redemption, so that we may renew our commitment to

positively respond with love in return. This will enable us to

renounce every habit that goes contrary to his love and work

harder in our Christian vocation. We must keep in mind that the

price paid by Christ for our salvation was not done with ease but

at the cost of his blood. This season is God-given opportunity to

shed the weight of our excesses that are not in conformity with

God’s love. The practices of prayer, Fasting, and almsgiving

during this season must be done in love. It is a season that we

learn to bear one another’s burden as Jesus did for us. We

reconcile with our estranged families and friends as Jesus

reconciled us with the Father. Our Lenten preparation will

determine the level of our joy at Easter.

I have noticed the moving around of various items in the stores

as a marketing strategy so that in searching for those items

people will get to see more things they could buy in the store,

thereby increasing their sales. The Lenten period is to reflect and

develop a better approach to maximise spiritual benefits for the

salvation of our souls and for the redemption of the world.

“When we live as children of God, redeemed, led by the Holy

Spirit (cf. Rom 8:29) and capable of acknowledging and obeying

God’s law, beginning with the law written on our hearts and in

nature, we also benefit creation by cooperating in its

redemption” (Pope Francis: 2019 Lenten Message). The journey

of conversion is a responsibility not a choice for every follower

of Christ. Let us make more efforts this season and be open to

the promptings of the Holy Spirit.

This week Wednesday (March 6) is the Ash Wednesday,

while Friday (March 8) is the beginning of the Stations of

the Cross for the Lenten Season. Remind your family and

friends about the importance of these exercises for our spiritual

enrichment. May we be inspired by the Spirit of God to create

time to embrace his love and mercy. Amen.

Fr. Augustine

As I glance out of my window, an abundance of

young birds are chirping wildly, enjoying bird seed.

I have noticed , as I rise early in the morning , the

sky is much brighter now . The days are getting

longer!! It is hard to believe that this coming Wednesday is already

Ash Wednesday.

Next Sunday , March 10th, will be the 1st Sunday of Lent.

Our word “Lent” originates from the word “Lencten” meaning

“Spring”!! Yes, Spring or Lent, will soon be here. The 40 days of

Lent, represent the time Jesus spent in the wilderness, as he

prepared to begin his Ministry. Just as nature is slowly changing

around us, our readings this week reflect on conversion, or our

need , for a “Change of Heart.”

The 1st reading and the gospel, direct us to avoid “Judging” others.

We are to take a moment to look into our own hearts,

as we reflect on our own attitudes.

Our 1st reading states that we may realize what is truly in someone

else's heart, by their choice of words spoken.

Our gospel speaks about looking into our own hearts and

consider our own faults and weaknesses, before we criticize or

judge others. In the coming weeks, as we are reminded to call to

mind our own need for a conversion of heart through acts of

Fasting, Prayer Life, and Works of Charity, perhaps the last line of

our gospel, is offering us the greatest words of Wisdom.

For it is out of the “Abundance of the heart” that the “Mouth

Speaks.”

May we choose our words very carefully as we “Think , before we

Speak.” Pray that you always, reply to others, from the

“Goodness”, of your Heart.
