Mike was just happy to see Linda Ayers… The brief scuffle/tug-of-war observed around the ticket area was actually Linda grabbing hold of the winning numbers! PDG Milt Levinson, as always, was there to take attendance and provide any needed assistance. Our Treasurer, Janie Bolitho, collected money, accepted requests for checks, and made sure everything balanced out by the end of the meeting. In the Beginning…A BIG welcome back to Jerry Haugh! He and his wife, Sherry, were able to attend the meeting today for the first time since Jerry’s hospitalization. He continues to recover, and he and his wife have greatly appreciated all the love and support from club members. That’s what families do… Please keep Chet Gibbons and Norm Brown in your thoughts and prayers. Both have been experiencing health issues, and we send our best wishes for their speedy recoveries. Announcements ………. Bary Freet led us in the 4-Way Test, and David Suss remembered the many things for which we are thankful. VISITING ROTARIANS AND GUESTS We were very pleased to welcome our visiting guests this week: Leila Collier was visiting from Oregon, Don Brady introduced Mike Moorman; we were very happy to welcome Sherry Haugh and Linda Ayers, and Sandra Levinson introduced her good friend Nikki Stone, who was previously the Director of Volunteer Services at DRMC.

ANNOUNCEMENTS President Jacque Wachs reminded everyone that there will be an Ice Cream Social on Saturday, August 9, from 7:00 P.M. – 9:00 P.M. at the Levinson’s home. This is going to be a fun event for the whole family, and there will be sundae decorating contests, swimming and great conversation. See you all there! Membership Chair and VP Lars Hansen announced that there will be a Membership Social on Tuesday, August 5th at Hotel Zozo (please see detailed e-mail sent from Lars). These socials will take place once a month, and we are working together with the Palm Springs Sunup Club to increase area membership. You are invited to bring a guest/potential member to enjoy a great evening.

$100.00 you can advertize for a full year on the website! Jona Acuña discussed the Opportunity Grant, and progress with backpacks for the homeless. Jona and Christine Cross are working

together with other club members to fill backpacks for

distribution, and we need more volunteers to join the group on July 28th at 5:30 in the evening at the Wachovia Securities office in Palm Springs. Backpacks will be distributed on July 30th.

District 5330 Events Remember to mark your calendars regarding the Membership Seminar on August 9th. President Jacque and Mark Stanley provided an update regarding the status of our new website. The site remains under construction, and you can go online and see the progress that has been achieved. We still need more volunteers for the Desertarian and website, so please let Jacque or Mark know if you are interested. Sponsor ship opportunities are available for the website. For just

Calling all hands.

Palm Springs Rotary 2nd Annual Golf Tournament P A G E 3 J U L Y 2 3 R D , 2 0 0 8

Mike Sellin provided an update on our first fundraiser for this year. The 2nd Annual Palm Springs Rotary Club Golf Classic will be held on Saturday, September 27, 2008. The event will take place at

Tahquitz Creek Resort Course, and we need players and volunteers. Please call Mike at (760) 835-9543 for more information. Bob Allen encouraged all members to promote the event and the Tee and Green sponsorships. PROGRAM Don Brady, Marketing Director of Desert Regional Medical Center, introduced

our guest speaker for today, Karolee M. Sowle, RN, MSN, MBA, CNAA, FACHE. Karolee is currently the Chief Executive Officer of Desert Regional Medical Center (DRMC). She joined the hospital in 1997, and has

Cardiology. DRMC has received the highest possible accreditation from the Society of Chest Pain Centers and is a Center of Excellence for bariatric surgery. *Newsbreak – Dr. Alderman entered the room at this point in the

lead area hospitals. In addition, the hospital ranked #1 in goal achievement for service among all Tenet hospitals, and received designation by United Healthcare as a Premium Center of Excellence for Cardiac Care, Joint Replacement, and Interventional

presentation, and quietly (nothing Dr A does is quiet! -

Editor) made his way towards his table… Describing the hospital as a “Jewel in the Desert” which provides “world class” care, Karolee stated that services provided include everything except transplants. DRMC is the only Level II Trauma Center and Neonatal

accomplishments for 2007, provide some background history, and discuss plans for the future.

Karolee reported that 2007 was a remarkable year for DRMC, and that the hospital team has worked diligently to provide the highest possible quality care for patients. Hospital quality scores, as reported by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services exceed the national average, and

served as the Chief Nursing Officer, and Chief Operating Officer. Karolee was a Wisconsin Rotarian, and expressed that she was very pleased to meet with fellow Rotarians to present a community update regarding DRMC key facts and

Intensive Care Unit in the Coachella Valley, and serves patients from Loma Linda to the Arizona border. Hospital programs also include: treatment for high risk OB, acute rehabilitation, the Comprehensive Cancer Center, ICON (Institute for Clinical Orthopedics and Neurosurgery), neurosurgery, cardiology services, pediatric programs, bariatric

surgery, hospice care, active clinical research trials and a Wellness Center. DMRC is also committed to investments in program development and community outreach. The hospital provided over $25 million in charity care to indigent patients in 2007. Hospital employees provide community education and health screenings, and work

with others throughout the Valley to improve healthcare for residents. Karolee also spoke about DRMC’s new and expanded services. These services and programs include: sports medicine, industrial and occupational medicine, a Primary Stroke Center, and deep brain stimulation. In closing, Karolee shared a vintage clip, provided by

enjoying this role WAY too much! Frank Peabody was also fined because he thought that horse hair replaced boar bristles in toothbrushes… As usual, many Rotarians achieved progress towards their contribution commitments today.

Stanley, Ray Corvan and Lars Hansen. It was quite clear that he is

graciously complied (we will tell her later not to encourage him). Thank you, Karolee, for speaking with us today.

He’s BAAAACK!!! Immediate Past President and Recognition Chair Bob Elsner was our Fine Master today. He checked to see how well we were paying attention during Karolee’s presentation, and promptly fined Ed Ellis, Bob Allen, Chuck Cheeld, Dr. Alderman, Milt Levinson, Mark

guest Mike Moorman, showcasing the El Mirador Hotel, which later became the site of DRMC. We all enjoyed viewing (and for some, revisiting) the history, landscape and activities of Palm Springs. Dr. Alderman requested the DVD, and Karolee

ABC’s OF ROTARY

The Secretariat

Many Rotarians consider the Secretariat simply

another name for the RI World Headquarters in

Evanston, Illinois, U.S.A. Actually, it is much

more. While it does include the World

Headquarters, the Secretariat encompasses

nearly 500 individuals working to make Rotary

International run smoothly and effectively. The

term describes the entire operations of the

general secretary and his staff. The Secretariat

also includes eight Rotary Service Centers

(formerly called Branch Offices) around the

world, all of the staff serving in those centers, as

well as all staff assigned to The Rotary

Foundation. Its sole purpose is to serve the

clubs, districts and administrative officers of

Rotary International and The Rotary Foundation.

RI World Headquarters, in a building called One

Rotary Centre in Evanston, is the headquarters

of the Secretariat.

HAPPY DOLLARS Jerry Haugh was very happy to be able to attend the meeting, and EXTREMELY thankful for his wife, Sherry. Tracy Powers contributed happy dollars to commemorate successful adoptions… Mike Brill was VERY happy that his air conditioner was finally repaired. Jim Dowler thanked all those who attended the progressive dinner recently held in Big Bear. Linda Ayers was very happy to visit us. Ray Corvan expressed thanks to our guest speaker, Karolee Sowle, and Don Brady. Frank Peabody contributed happy dollars to celebrate that his daughter is expecting a baby today and for his birthday.

OPPORTUNITY DRAWING Congratulations to Linda Ayers for purchasing the winning ticket today! We were all so happy to have her return for a visit, and she just jumped right in and grabbed that ticket! The special marble has yet to be drawn. Make sure to purchase those tickets next week!

Humour for the week! • Whose cruel idea was it for the word "lisp"

to have an "s" in it? • Since light travels faster than sound, isn't

that why some people appear bright until you hear them speak?

• How come abbreviated is such a long word?

• If it's zero degrees outside today and it's supposed to be twice as cold tomorrow, how cold is it going to be?

• Why do you press harder on a remote-control when you know the battery is dead?

• Since Americans throw rice at weddings, do Orientals throw hamburgers?

• Why are they called buildings, when they're already finished? Shouldn't they be called builts? Why are they called apart-ments, when they're all stuck together?

• Why do banks charge you a "non-sufficient funds fee" on money they already know you don't have?

• Why is the alphabet in that order? • If the universe is everything, and scientists

say that the universe is expanding, what is it expanding into?

• If you got into a taxi and the driver started driving backward, would the taxi driver end up owing you money?

• What would a chair look like if your knees bent the other way?

• When two airplanes almost collide why do they call it a near miss?? It sounds like a near hit to me!!

• Why are there 5 syllables in the word "monosyllabic"?

• Why do they call it the Department of Inte-rior when they are in charge of everything outdoors?

• Why do scientists call it research when looking for something new?
