Nichole Stoddard will began working in Confer- ence Registration on February 23. She began work- ing for the Division’s Facilitation Center in July 2000 where she has provided expert assistance to Distance Education students. While she will be missed there, Conference Registration looks forward to having Nichole join its staff. Please join us in welcoming Nichole to conference registration. New Trainer Hired at DCE DCE is happy to welcome Betsy Shaffer as the Professional Devel- opment Trainer for the new Customer Service and Supervision Training Series (see article on page 2). She graduated from K-State with a B.S. in Business Administration, majoring in Marketing/International Busi- ness, with a minor in French. From K-State, she went on to a manager-in-training program at Wal-Mart in Wichita. Betsy grew up in the suburbs of Wichita and has recently moved back to Manhattan to take this position. Betsy enjoys the outdoors and cannot wait until the snow melts so she can start biking around Manhattan. Welcome to the Division, Betsy! New Public Information Office Assistant Derek Larson of the Duplicating/Mail Center has accepted a new assignment as PIO Student Assistant. He will be writing news releases, assisting with web changes and updates, updating course listings on the distance education websites, proofreading documents, and much more. “I’m excited about trying something new,” said Derek, who is currently a junior at K-State. “Being a journalism major, I think this experience will help me prepare for my career once I’m finished with school.” In his spare time, he enjoys watching and playing sports, playing video games, and spending time with his friends and family. Currently, Derek is spending part of the day with the Duplicating/Mail Center, and the other part training with the PIO students. New Public Information Office Assistant Derek Larson of the DuplicatingMail Center has

accepted a new assignment as PIO Student Assistant He will be writing news releases assisting with web changes and updates updating course listings on the distance education websites proofreading documents and much more

ldquoIrsquom excited about trying something newrdquo said Derek who is currently a junior at K-State ldquoBeing a journalism major I think this experience will help me prepare for my career once Irsquom finished with schoolrdquo

In his spare time he enjoys watching and playing sports playing video games and spending time with his friends and family

Bachelorrsquos Degree Completion Program Celebrates 30 Years The Division of Continuing Education will be celebratshy

ing a BIG Anniversary in 2004 It is the 30th year that the Division has been offering the Bachelorrsquos Degree Completion Program (formerly the Non-Traditional Study Program) While many universities and colleges are just beginning to offer distance education and degree opporshytunities Kansas State University has been on the foreshyfront of distance education

The Bachelorrsquos Degree Completion Program was started in 1974 and in 1976 the first individuals gradushyated from the program Since 1976 187 people have graduated through the program The BDC Program currently has a record high participation rate with around 550 active students

Engineering Program Featured on Website Globalspeccom an electronic e-newsletter for

Learnonorg provides a wide variety of training

DCE Style Guide Update An updated version of the DCE Style Guide is

available online at httpwwwdceksueduintranet pio The Style Guide sets ldquorulesrdquo that DCE staff should follow when preparing news releases advertisements brochures or web pages The updated version of the Style Guide includes inforshymation on University Style from University Media and Marketing with a link to their site This compilashytion combines not only the University Style but also Associated Press Style for news items and Modern Language Style for web pages and broshychures The DCE Style Guide will hopefully serve as a quick reference tool for grammar punctuation capitalization and spelling questions

Customer Service and Supervision Trainings to be Offered by DCE The Division is happy to announce the addition of two non-credit professional development offerings

ldquoWinning Through Customer Servicerdquo and a supervision training series Both trainings utilize Vital Learningrsquos training modules Vital Learning has been at the forefront of leadermanager training for over 20 years

ldquoBrett joined the Office of Mediated Education over one year ago and continues to be a valuable asset to Information Technology at K-State Brett worked with Genuity in California and Massachusetts prior to returning to K-State His knowledge and skills in server software management ensure that widely used systems like K-State Online and the Survey System run smoothly and have the highest possible amount of uptime He also ensures that computing environshyments and procedures for application developers are always available so that the developers are always busy Brett and his dedicated staff of application services administrators face a continually growing workload and are responsible for systems which are quite visible to students and faculty including K-State Online the Survey System and the SGA Election System Recently Brett has been a leader in the technical implementation of K-Statersquos web-portal initiatives Brett has been of great service to DCE OME and the K-State IT environmentrdquo Rob Caffey
