LIONS NEWS - ROUND 12

Senior Team: A note from the Coach:Well what a disastrous day it turned out to be for us. Not only was it a

shocking day weather wise greeting us at Croydon oval on Saturday butwe would put in our worst performance of the year.

Strangely enough, we started the game quite well in very trying

conditions & jumped out of the blocks in the first quarter, kicking 3 goalsto 0. Our pressure was excellent & we were playing the conditions well. Our ball movement was quite quick but with the benefit of hindsight, the

writing was probably on the wall. We were getting smashed in theclearances & this would be a telling factor for the remaining 3 quarters.

We went in at the first change up 3.3 to 0.2

The second quarter was an absolute 180 in terms of game style. Croydonkept up their clearance dominance & also lifted their pressure all over

the ground. We didn’t respond & they were well on top. We couldn’t getany flow going due to their pressure & we went into our shells with our

ball movement. The tide had well & truly turned & they were nowconverting their opportunities into goals. They kicked 4 goals for the

quarter & kept us goalless to go in at the long break up 4.3 to 3.6

We addressed some glaring issues at half time but didn’t really changeanything structurally, as we believed we had the right mix but just had tolift our pressure & ball movement. We had to start getting our hands on

the footy first at the coal face & generate some energy.

Unfortunately none of this happened in either the third or fourthquarters. We just couldn’t get anything going no matter how much we

tried & simple mistakes were costing us dearly. To Croydon’s credit, theymade us pay dearly for all of them. We did manage to go in at 3quarter

time slightly up 5.7 to 5.5 but the result was agonisingly apparent ifsomething dramatically didn’t change..... & it didn’t.

There were only two positives to take out of the game & that was that wecouldn’t have played any worse, while Croydon were outstanding in everyfacet of the game. They beat us on every line & every position. The other

being that while they had pure dominance, we only went down by 7points. The eventual score being Croydon 7.9.51 to Us 6.8.44.

Micka tried hard all day as did Whitey. Lowther & McLeod worked their

way into the game, while Trkulja did a reasonable job on one of their keyforwards.

We now look to respond in a big way against an in form Mooroolbark thisSaturday back home at Zerbes. Please come down & support your boys

as we’ll need every bit of it to help in that response.

Go Lions!!

A note from the Coach:Round 11 saw us take on Croydon away who are 2nd on the ladder. It is of my

opinion that Croydon are the team to beat and we were in for a massivechallenge today.

We were kicking into the wind in the first quarter and it was tough work

early, as Croydon dominated the opening half of the quarter. They had repeatinside 50’s and although the backline stood up, Croydon managed to kick

3.2.20 as we remained scoreless.

Looking to take advantage of the wind in the 2nd quarter, Croydon kicked thefirst to extend their lead to 28 points early in the quarter. It was here wherewe kicked into gear and our midfield started to win some footy around theground. Lachie Steele & Dylan Olley again were terrific in the ruck and we

managed to kick 2 goals for the quarter, going into half time 4.4.28 to 2.1.13 tobe 15 points down.

The third quarter was much the same as the 1st, Croydon were relentlessaround stoppages and surged the ball forward at will. Our backline wasunder siege, Alex Rintoul & Ash Neville stood tall and repelled as many

entries as possible, however it was to no avail as Croydon kicked 2.4 for thequarter to extend their lead to 29 points, 6.8.44 to 2.3.15.

We believed we could give Croydon a scare and we kicked the 1st goal of thequarter, however Croydon steadied and kicked the next goal to rule out anychance of us making a comeback. Matt Vaiano (3 goals) and Daniel Mead (2

goals) were our only goal scorers for the game and finished the gamestrongly, managing to kick us 3 goals in the final term to finish 16 points

behind when the final siren sounded, 7.9.51 to 5.5.35.

It seemed we were a little flat throughout the entire game and thescoreboard flattered us in the end. We were comprehensively beaten by thebetter side on the day however we learn from the experience and look to getbetter this weekend against Mooroolbark which will be another great test for

this group.

Go Lions!
