The Midrash teaches that Shabbos observance is equivalent to all the mitzvos of the Torah. Hashem says, “If you merit to truly observe the Shabbos, I will deem it as if you kept all the mitzvos of the Torah. But if you desecrate it, I will deem it as if you transgressed all of my mitzvos.” The reason Shabbos observance is so fundamental is because it bears testimony that Hashem is the Creator and therefore, all of His creatures are bound by His commandents. The Chofetz Chaim adds a perspective, based on the words of the Gemara, “Hashem told Moshe, ‘I have a special gift in My treasury; its name is Shabbos.

I want to give it to the Jewish people.’” Shabbos is the gift that Hashem-likened to the groom-gave to His bride, the nation of Yisrael. If a bride returns the gifts to the groom, the message is clear-the wedding is canceled. One who desecrates the Shabbos tells Hashem, in effect, that the “marriage” between them is off. Thus, Shabbos observance is equivalent to all the mitzvos of the Torah.

It’s the first change people newly committed to a healthier lifestyle typically make; swear off the white flour and switch to whole wheat. But will eating lots of whole wheat products really improve your health? The truth is, compared to white flour, whole wheat is definitely healthier. For one, whole wheat contains more nutrients than its white counterpart. Additionally, it boasts a higher fiber content, which aids in digestion and keeps you full longer. But, as they say, there is no such a thing as a free lunch, and even eating whole wheat comes with its own price.

Nutrient densityThough whole wheat does have more nutrients than white flour, it is still not a nutrient-dense food. Nutrient density refers to the amount of healthy compounds and beneficial nutrients a food will provide in relation to its caloric density, or the amount of calories it contains. Whole wheat doesn’t score very high on the list, especially when compared to vegetables and proteins.

CarbohydratesOne of the main problems of the standard American diet is that we consume too much carbohydrates. A major source of carbohydrates is grains, and wheat is the dominant grain in our diet. Whole wheat, even when compared to white flour, is still very high in carbohydrates. Some people think the more whole grains they eat, the better. This may lead them to consume massive amounts of carbohydrates, thus raising their blood sugar and insulin to unhealthy levels. In the long run, this can cause insulin resistance and diabetes. Ironically, these people may be better off sticking to white flour, if they consume it in smaller amounts.

Glycemic indexNot every carbohydrate raises blood sugar at the same rate. The glycemic index of a food tells us how fast that specific

food will raise the blood sugar level. The higher up on the glycemic index a food is, the faster the carbohydrate gets digested and converted to glucose. One of the factors in lowering a food’s glycemic index is its fiber content. Surprisingly however, whole wheat, for all its fiber content, still scores high on the glycemic index.

The bottom lineFor a healthy person, eating moderate amounts of whole wheat is fine -- definitely better than refined wheat. But if you want to loose weight or if you want to treat or prevent a disease, like diabetes or heart disease, it would be a good idea to reduce your total carb intake and focus on consuming more proteins and vegetables.
