A new gaol was built in Thorpe Road (The Sessions

House) to replace the Kings Lodgings and the house

of correction in Exchange Street near the corner of

Cumbergate. It was erected in 1842 at a cost of more

than £10,000 with the aid of a large donation from Lord

Burghley of £500.

The building was designed by W J Donthorpe (who worked

on Peterborough Cathedral’s Chapter House and he is

thought to be the architect of Fletton Tower, Peterborough)

as a courthouse with a gaol behind. It was built in the

Norman style of Pentonville Prison in London. The front

entrance has a portcullis featured above it. The courtrooms

and offices were in the front block (the Sessions House)

with a cell block and exercise yard behind. It was first used

as a prison and Magistrates’ Court in the spring of 1844.

In late 1878 it stood untenanted by prisoners. For some time

after the closing of the gaol the prisoners from the Liberty

of Peterborough were transported to Huntingdon which was

then the county gaol. After Huntingdon gaol closed prisoners

were conveyed to Northampton or Cambridge.

In the late 1870s it became the Headquarters for the Liberty

of Peterborough police. In 1947 the police were relocated

when the two separate forces – the Liberty of Peterborough

(who presided over the old “Soke” of Peterborough) and the

City of Peterborough force became one. The police offices

moved to Milton Street house built by Earl Fitzwilliam.

During 1961 the Sessions House gaol was demolished.

Petty and Quarter court session were held here for over 100

years and it ceased being the city’s Magistrates’ Court

in 1978.

The only remaining part of the original building

is the front which has been listed as a Garde II

building. In 1985 it was converted to a public

house and restaurant and in 2000 it was bought

by local businessman Rinaldo Fasulo, and is

currently used as a pub and carvery.

COMMUNITY

Our featured historians in the City Scene are June and

Vernon Bull, founder members of the Peterborough

Local History Society.

June and Vernon’s main hobby is collecting old postcards

of Peterborough and they have 3,500 originals from the late

Victorian period to the early 1960s.

They have published a series of Peterborough Picture

Postcard books and other local history books from

1988 onwards. Since they started working and living

in Peterborough over four decades ago they have seen

immense changes to the Cathedral city. They have been

privileged to know and learn from many of the Peterborough

dignitaries and business families over the years - through

their connections with St John the Baptist (Peterborough

Parish Church), as well as through their social networking.

5Telephone: 01780 783613 | November 2011 5

Both enjoy visiting other organisations to give illustrated

talks on old Peterborough and are always happy to

meet Peterborians who can tell them more about its

undocumented social history. Postcard collecting is their

main passion but they also collect Peterborough crested

ware and other local ephemera.

June & Vernon are delighted that many people still have a

real interest in the history of Peterborough and hope that

through their second volume of “Peterborough Through

Time” even more will continue to enjoy the city’s past.

“Peterborough Through Time – A Second Selection” was

launched earlier this year and is published by Amberley

Publishing (www.amberley-books.com). It can be

purchased from all major on line book sellers, as well as

local book shops and major supermarkets.

Once common and widespread throughout the

UK, the voles have vanished from over 94% of

their former range, a decline that exceeds that

of the Otter! As a result of this decline Water

Voles are now protected under the Wildlife and

Country Side Act and various conservation

groups around the country are working hard

to restore the vole population. Habitat loss,

habitat fragmentation and intensification of

farming methods have all led to a decline

in vole numbers. It was the arrival of the

American Mink in 1929 however that proved

catastrophic to the voles. Originally imported

to the UK to be bred for the fur industry,

captive mink soon escaped or were released

from mink farms and rapidly adapted to life in

England where they had few natural predators

and prey species that had never encountered

such a voracious predator.

Along with the voles the Reserve was also

played a fleeting visit by, of all things a

Flamingo! Fiona the flamingo is an escapee

the run – or fly since just before Christmas

Holy Voley and a touch of pink

Back in the warmth of the summer months, the Rutland Water Nature Reserve started on a project to reintroduce Water Voles to the Rutland country side. Theses adorable rodents have been immortalised as the character of ‘Ratty’ in the Wind and the Willows.

Mink are excellent swimmers and are able

to dive under water and follow the voles

into their burrows. This means the burrow,

which is a safe haven form predators such

as herons, is rendered useless and the vole

is a sitting duck in its tunnel. It is estimated

that a single female mink can kill 50 – 100

voles in one breeding season thus it is clear

why they have been so disastrous for vole

populations. There are now various mink

control programmes in action around the

country in an effort to reduce the damage

they are causing to our native wildlife –

thankfully Rutland staff have found no

presence of mink in the area -so for now the

voles have a relatively safe haven.

Riverford, based just outside Peterborough at Sacrewell Farm was recently announced a winner at the RSPCA Good Business Awards, in the Independent Food Retailer category. The award was presented at a ceremony held at London’s One Marylebone, alongside accolades for pubs, restaurants, caterers, supermarkets and fashion businesses who are going the extra mile for animal welfare.

Riverford Organic wins at the RSPCA Good Business Awards

The awards are run annually by the RSPCA and aim to

highlight those companies in the UK who are going the extra

mile or doing something different for animal welfare.

The judges were particularly impressed by the way

Riverford communicates its animal welfare story to

customers through its newsletters and social media, such

as its hit YouTube video ‘Bucking Bovines’, which has had

over 26,000 viewings of the Riverford dairy herd running

out to pasture. It was also praised for it’s ‘meat and 10

veg’ campaign, which encourages customers to eat better

quality meat, but less often, to help reduce the demand for

intensively reared meat.

COMMUNITYaway from their birth families and this means finding families in the outlying areas. If you have a friend or family member who lives just outside the city council area who has previously mentioned adoption, please ask them to get in touch.”

Typically, the city council needs to find 20 to 30 homes for adoptive children each year. Homes are needed for children of all ages and there is also a need for people who can adopt sibling groups, children with disabilities or health problems and children from black and ethnic minority backgrounds. The process of identifying, assessing and approving new adopters happens throughout the year so expressions of interest are welcomed from prospective adopters at any time.

People from all walks of life can adopt, including people who are single, couples with or without children and same sex couples. You do need to be over 21, but there is no upper age limit.

The city council’s adoption team can provide helpful advice, guidance and support throughout the whole process - resulting in a fulfilling, satisfying and successful new family life for both the adoptive parents and the adopted child. PLEA FOR PEOPLE TO CONSIDER ADOPTION

DURING NATIONAL WEEK

Have you considered adopting a child but then put it to the back of your mind? Do you have a loving home which you could offer a child in need of adoption? Peterborough City Council is appealing for people to find out more about adopting a child or young person to coincide with National Adoption Week which takes place from Monday 31 October 2011 until Sunday 6 November 2011.

Families are needed for children of any age in the Peterborough

Richard Marsh, senior practitioner within Peterborough City Council’s adoption service, said: “There is a real need to identify families outside of the city council area who are able to adopt children whose circumstances mean they can no longer remain with their birth parents. FAIRTRADE IS THE FUTUREAs part of its aspiration to be the Home of Environment Capital, Peterborough is aiming to become a Fairtrade City approved by the Fairtrade Foundation in time for Fairtrade Fortnight in February 2012.

Peterborough Environment City Trust (PECT) is working with

Peterborough City Council and a group of keen volunteers to

achieve Fairtrade targets in businesses, community groups

and schools across the city.

Fairtrade is about better prices, decent working conditions,

local sustainability and fair terms of trade for farmers and

workers in the developing world. By promoting, stocking and

buying Fairtrade, it is possible to support communities all

over the world.

PECT’s Penny Fletcher said, “In a globalised world, ethical

trade is increasingly important. We are calling on the whole

community to help make Peterborough a Fairtrade City!

“Support this initiative and help us achieve Fairtrade

status by switching to Fairtrade in your staff rooms and

canteens, holding a Fairtrade event to spread the word and

highlighting the range of Fairtrade products available.”

Invisalign BracesI’ve always wanted perfect teeth and was torn between veneers or a brace, so earlier this year I attended an Invisalign open evening at the Smile Boutique in Peterborough. I was amazed how this unnoticeable piece of plastic could naturally transform my teeth into a perfect smile in 12 months, so I was sold. After aconsultationIwenttopickupmyfirstsetof Invisalignclear braces. How it works is that you wear one set of braces(oneupper,onelower)for22hoursadayfor2weeksthenyouswapforyournextsetandsoon.Atfirstitfelt unusual to be wearing what I describe as a really thin gum shield and you have to take them out when you eat and drink, but after a few sets it feels completely normal. I’ll report back in February when I’m half way through my treatment to tell you how I’m getting on!For more information contact the Smile Boutique on: 01733 551 534 or drop in the practice at 150 Park Road, Peterborough PE1 2UB.

With the chilly days now upon us our gardens retreat into winter dormancy; that’s if the heat wave we are experiencing as I write this has not continued! Contrary to popular belief, leafing through seed catalogues in front of a warm fire is not the only job on the list during the winter months, so don’t hang your gardening gloves just yet!

What is clutter?Clutter can consist of many different things. It can be:-• thingsthatyouhaven’tusedforyears, butkeepholdof‘justincase’.• impulsepurchasesthatyoucostsomuch, youjusthavetoholdontothem.• anexpensiveitemofclothingthatyouhaveonlywornonce, ornotatall!• oldmake-upanddrieduppotsofnailvarnish.• hordesofemptyjamjarsthat‘might’comeinusefuloneday.• brokenobjectsthatyou’will’getroundtofixingsoon.• unwantedpresents. This list goes on, but basically clutter is really anything that you do not use, need, wear, refer to or like.

Effect of clutterWe often find ourselves overwhelmed by the amount of excess baggage we have managed to accumulate over time, and in some cases this can affect how we feel about our home. Living in an unorganised mess can have a diverse effect on how we operate throughout the day – not being able to find a clean work shirt or the car keys when you are already running late can often lead to feelings of stress and not being in control.

If you have allowed clutter to build, your home will no longer be the place where you can recharge your battery and relax; it will start to feel oppressive and depressing and before long you avoid being there and having people round.

Dealing with clutterTackling clutter can seem an impossible task if you don’t know where or how to start. The first step is to assess the amount of clutter you have. If you are a compulsive hoarder then you may find it easier to call in the professionals. If you just allow clutter to take over specific rooms or areas of your home, then it really is a matter of being more organized and stricter on yourself and your family. Before starting your task, have allocated areas for the items you are throwing/

Take unwanted items to a local charity shop, or see if any family member or friend wants to take them off your hands. If you want to make some money, go along to a local car boot sale or advertise bigger items in your local paper or community magazine.

If you don’t, you will soon find yourself back in the same situation. Dealing with things as they appear will help to keep your space organized so make sure all family members are behind your efforts.

Once you have de-cluttered you will be amazed at the sense of relief it brings. You will feel that you are finally in control of your home again, not the other way around and as a result a more relaxed and welcoming home will appear.

recycling. It will be easier if you can place the items straight into cardboard boxes or black bags labeled charity shops, car boot, eBay etc. as this avoids any opportunity for second thoughts.

Start in one room. Allow yourself at least a day. Decide where you are going to start and work methodically. Be sensible and understand that it will take time. With every item that you pick up ask yourself the following questions - Do I need this? Do I use this? Do I like this?

NOW UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT, is set in its own grounds in the idyllic village of Baston, Lincs. A truly warm welcome awaits you regardless of the occasion or event. We cater for Weddings, Christenings and other family events as well as having conference facilities, a wonderful beer garden and a much improved kids play area.

NOW UNDER NEW

MANAGEMENT

We have 9 newly refurbished, en suite rooms including the stunning Bridal Suite. From family rooms to single occupancy we can cater for most requirements.

Our restaurant, also completely refurbished and now under the guidance of Head Chef Karl Turner, is fast gaining a wonderful reputation for quality and innovation. Why not try our Kangaroo steaks or the “Bird in a bird in a bird” meal to share during shooting season.

Complimenting the restaurant is our traditional bar. Full of character (and characters) we stock a wide range of real ales as well as the usual bar fayre.

The beer garden is the idyll spot to while away those long summer nights. Surrounded on 3 sides by our amazing vine covered gazebo, character abounds. Our Carp pond is the perfect centre point, filled by a babbling brook from a mini waterfall and shaded in the evening by our very own Pear tree. With piped music to set the mood it’s a wonderful feature of the hotel.

On the other side of the beer garden is the best bit of all; a large, secure play area for kids. With climbing frames, swings, a slide and lots of open lawn, the kids will be more than happy to play for hours while the Mums and Dads enjoy the peace and quiet.

Here at The Baskervilles we have it all. From creating the perfect wedding day, the Christening of your new pride and joy, birthday celebrations, gala dinners, Superleague Darts and more formal conference facilities. Our staff are here to help.

We hope you have a pleasant time and we look forward to seeing you again soon.

glass and new sound deadening materials to make it one of

the quietest cars in its class.

As well as an elegant new look on the inside and out the

Passat can be specified with Automatic Distance Control

(ADC) that can instinctively slow the car to a halt should

it encounter traffic. In addition, the VW can be fitted with a

fatigue detection system that monitors the driver’s inputs

and automatically emits an audible and visual warning to

recommend a break if required.

Of course, improving safety in cars is vital, but developing

cleaner, greener engines is equally important to motor

manufacturers - and VW is no exception. That’s why the

German company’s diesel engines are now badged as

BlueMotion products (why not GreenMotion?) and they are

equippedwithbatteryregenerationandStop/Startsystems

as standard. The result is that the Passat, on test here in

SE 2.0 TDI 140 PS DSG guise, is capable of 54.3 mpg and

emitsonly135g/kmCO2.That’sprettygoodgoingwhenyou

consider the car is fitted with a six-speed auto gearbox (with

very handy flappy paddles behind the wheel).

Until fairly recently the estate

car was thought of as the ugly

one out of the family. It was the

unwritten rule that its saloon and

hatchback siblings would be better

looking. Today that still holds

some truth, but not when it comes

to the new Volkswagen Passat.

FAST FACTS

Alright, the 2.0 litre 140 PS (138 bhp) engine isn’t the

quickest, but the Passat I had felt solid, well-built and

fast enough for purpose. I couldn’t stop praising it when I

lifted the tailgate. The load area is vast and it swallowed up

everything I needed to chuck in – and more. It’s an ideal car

for a family – and as a dad of two young children I felt this

might well be a motor I’d choose to buy – if I didn’t already

have a perfectly decent Audi A4 Avant. Actually, the Audi I

own is a 2003 model and the boot is nowhere near the size

of the latest Passat’s!

The VW is perfect for long-distance commutes or short

school runs. I never felt tired behind the wheel, despite

driving up and down the M6 several times over the week

I had the car. And on the short trips to school and nursery

the decent turning circle on the Passat came in handy when

chucking U-turns in narrow streets.

I can’t believe I’ve been so enthusiastic about an estate car.

I must be getting old. But, believe me, if you have a family

and you’re in the market for a substantial, comfortable, well

screwed-together, economical, load-swallower then the new

VW Passat Estate is a car to add to your list of test drives.

Sri Lanka as a nation has come a long

way from it’s turbulent past which has

been blighted by civil unrest and the 2004

Tsunami, which caused over 50,000

fatalities. The Sri Lankan people are

wonderfully resilient and proud people

and not only have they come to terms

with the past but they are looking forward

to the future with much optimism. In our

opinion there is no doubt that this unique

island is primed to become a prosperous

destination hotspot.

Cricket fans in particular will want to take

note as Sri Lanka will be hosting the ICC

Twenty20 World Cup this time next year,

a sport followed religiously in a Cricket-

obsessed nation, and it is sure to be a

colourful and atmospheric event. England

Local travel company Inspirational

Travel continue to add wonderful

destinations to their portfolio and

this month they launch Sri Lanka,

aptly known as the “pearl of the

Indian Ocean”. The companies MD,

Steve Daykin, has just returned

from a three-week adventure to

some of the best highlights that

Sri Lanka has to offer, which

range from sunning yourself on the

numerous idyllic beaches spread

across the coastline to discovering

the unique patchwork history of

this culture-rich island.

also tour in March, playing two tests (one in

Galle and one in Colombo). Packages for

the tests and the Twenty20 are available

through Inspirational Travel.

Colombo, the economic capital and

hub of the country, is simply manic with

everything at first seeming so overwhelming.

Before rushing around this beautifully

chaotic city take some time to take in all the

sights, sounds and smells at your own pace.

Life here surprisingly can go quite slowly

once you discover the laid-back mindset of

the fun and charming Sri Lankans. Getting

around this island can seem quite a chore,

with not the most perfect road network and

driving styles that would make the safety

conscious wince. The key is to simply go

with the flow.

Heading inland is the cultural heartland

of what has made this nation what it is

today. From the rich history of the Golden

Triangle, endowed with temples and

monasteries offering an insight into the

history of the ancient kingdoms, to the

quintessentially British colonial charm

of the Hill Country, with tea plantations

dotted across the verdantly green hills and

quaint houses that wouldn’t look out of

place in the English countryside, this is an

area deserving exploration. The so-called

‘Capital’ of the cultural heartland, Kandy,

was the last ancient kingdom to hold out

against colonialism and is rich & proud in

its strong Buddhist heritage, and it was

no surprise that it was made a UNESCO

World Heritage Site in 1988.

Sri Lanka’s picturesque beach towns and

ports have drawn past explorers and traders

to its shores, lured by the exotic offerings of

fruits, spices and tea. Today those towns

offer smart little boutique hotels and lodges,

with bustling centres that house energetic

markets. Alongside they offer miles and miles

of wonderful pristine beaches that provide

the perfect base to relax and just do nothing

at all.

Missing the edge of wildlife sightings? Sri

Lanka has a number of superb National Parks

where you can spot the Sri Lankan elephant,

leopard and sloth bear for starters, which are

all endemic to the island. Many other species

of mammal plus over 200 species of birds are

also found in the National Parks, to ensure the

offerings of nature are rich and varied.

There are regular direct flights from

London Heathrow and the island can

also be combined with The Maldives or

destinations in Asia or the Middle East.

Example price:

Just £950.00 per person for a

7-night stay at the brand new 4-Star

Deluxe Haridra Beach Resort,

including flights from London and

private car transfers in Sri Lanka.

Ryan’s Football Preview

Wolverhampton Wanderers V Wigan Athletic, (6th Nov)The Premier League is barely a third of the way through but already this fixture is a full blooded ‘6 pointer’ with both teams having taken only 7 and 5 points respectively out of a possible 24 (at the time of writing). Wigan began the season relatively well, recording 1 win and 2 draws which boss Roberto Martinez would have happily taken before the campaign got under way. Since then though they have lost 5 in 5 which makes the clash with what many would see as fellow relegation candidates in Wolves all the more important. Similarly Mick McCarthy’s side began the season well, better in fact winning 2 from the first 3 matches. Since then, losses at home to Tottenham and new boys QPR as well as defeats to Liverpool and Newcastle before the heartache of a midlands derby humbling at West Brom make this match as important for them as it is to the Latics. Expect goals and some tasty tackles.

Chelsea V Liverpool, (20th Nov)As always this is a standout fixture in the Premier League between two of the heavyweights of the division. At the time of writing both teams will be pretty satisfied with their starts to the season. Chelsea took a step into the relative unknown with manager Andre Villas Boas and their faith in youth, (management wise not playing!) has so far paid off with the Portuguese taking the blues to just 3 points off the top. Liverpool have had a solid start apart from their capitulation at Tottenham and Anfield legend Kenny Dalglish has transformed their fortunes in his 10 months in charge. With both teams looking to now make assaults to de-thrown the two Manchester clubs who have relentlessly set the early season pace at the top, 3 points would be of massive importance as well as giving themselves huge confidence going forwards.

As we speak Posh sit in

11th place, just 1 point

off the golden gates of

the playoff positions.

This doesn’t tell the

whole story though

as defeats to Hull

City and particularly

Doncaster came against

the run of play and

Darren Fergusons men

could quite easily have

another 4 points in the

bag. This is the cruel

nature of Championship

football though and

many in this squad

know only too well

from last time around

there is no point in

if’s and but’s. The

manager and players

have clearly learnt

many a lesson though

and nobody connected

with the club can be

anything but quietly

happy so far, at the

same time keeping

vigilant against any

form of complacency.

This month with 3 of

their 5 matches against

the current top 4 we’ll

all be better placed

leading up to Christmas

whether this form can

be sustained. Let’s

all hope!

SPORT

JIMMY White believes he can still

reproduce the form of his hey-day

as he looks forward to defending his

World Seniors Championship crown

in Peterborough.

The Whirlwind won the inaugural event

last year by beating Steve Davis 4-1 in

the final, and he’ll be trying to repeat

that success at Exec Peterborough at

the East of England Showground on

November 5 and 6.

Alongside White, Davis and Knowles,

legends of snooker such as Dennis

Taylor, John Parrott, Cliff Thorburn, Joe

Johnson and Doug Mountjoy will be

competing for the £18,000 top prize in

the tournament which will be televised

live by Sky Sports to an estimated

viewing audience of 1.5 million.

Well we were told to expect some exciting

hockey this season at Bretton Gate and

that is certainly what we have had.

After the first day 6-2 defeat to

relegated Premiership side Canterbury the

next week saw a complete reversal with

an 8-2 win against local rivals Harleston

Magpies, who were mesmerised by some

brilliant hockey. This showed what a

difference having the full squad available

could make. Even better was to follow in

the next game when long time top club

Old Loughtonians from Essex were beaten

3-2. This is undoubtedly one of the best

results achieved for many years. A 5-1

cup win over Bedford followed and the

next league game against Wimbledon was

keenly anticipated. This was the first time

that this opposition had been encountered

and with their raft of current and former

international players a tough game was

expected. When 4-1 down early in the

second half this looked a good forecast but

an excellent last 25 minutes saw a great

comeback and we were very disappointed

Hockey

to lose 5-4. New opposition were again

the order of the day the next week at

Teddington and once more a goal fest

followed resulting in a 4-4 draw.

Certainly we have shown that we can

handle ourselves at this level and with

a bit of tightening up at the back, could

be a force in the National league. More

challenges follow, however, with the

mercurial Indian Gymkhana the next

visitors to Bretton Gate. We have never

beaten them but coach Gareth Andrew

is confident that this can be put right. If

you want to see exiting sport played at a

high level get yourself down to the club

at the earliest chance.
