The original Parish Church of St John the

Baptist stood to the east of the Cathedral in

an area called “Bondgate”, later Boongate.

The old churchyard still retains the name of

St John’s Close. The former wooden Church

building was probably constructed around

1078 but eventually the area east of the

town became prone to flooding and when

the growth and subsequent reordering of

Peterborough took place this left the old

Parish Church cut off from the centre of the

expanding market town which also serviced

the district.

The former church was eventually

pulled down and closed in 1402 with the

agreement of Henry Beaufort, Bishop of

Lincoln (the largest Diocese in England). It

is interesting to note that Bishop Beaufort

was the son of John of Gaunt, half brother

to the reigning King Henry 1V.

The rebuilding and relocation of the

existing Parish Church to the heart of

the town began in 1402 and was finally

completed in 1407. Building material

included wooden beams and rafters from

the old church of St John the Baptist along

with wood from Milton Park, and stone

from the nave of St Thomas a Becket’s

Chapel, located near Peterborough

Cathedral’s Western Gateway, was used.

The relocated church of St. John the

Baptist, in the centre of the city, is a large

and fine stone building, built at the time

COMMUNITY

St John The BaptistPeterborough Parish Church Cathedral Square

in the Perpendicular style. It took 5 years

to build because it was funded entirely

at the expense of the parishioners. Some

commentators of the time noted that Abbot

Genge obtained his “foundership” at a

remarkably cheap rate.

The first mass and consecration of the

new building took place on Sunday 26 June

1407. At this time the building would have

stood alone in the open Market Place and

the floor of the church and the surface

of the roadway would have been on the

same level. St John’s was built with a

spire above the tower and Chapels east of

the north and south aisles with elaborate

screens and stalls. Mediaeval coloured

glass windows, elaborate murals on every

wall, gold embellishments and ornamental

works adorned this new church - giving it a

wonderful lightness.

But over the last 605 years it has seen

many changes. The most important over

recent centuries took place between 1818

to1820 by an Act of Parliament; along with

the recent refurbishment of the interior

to match the exterior in 2011. The latter

included the reordering of the west end

– with the installation of toilets, crèche,

Sunday School room, new kitchen/servery,

a welcome area, parish office, plus glazed

south and west doors. The demolition of the

Norwich Union building in 2009 allowed the

exterior to be opened up and a new grassed

area (St John’s Square) has enabled a new

vista of the west end of the church.

The original churchyard of the old church

in Boongate was located in St John’s

Close, on the south side of the Cathedral.

In 1803 it was full and the Churchwardens

bought 3 acres of farm land at the end of

Cowgate with the first burial in 1805. An

approach road was made through the

graveyard in 1912 and eventually the

graveyard was bought by Peterborough

Development Corporation to make way for

the existing Crescent roundabout in the

1970s. Exhumed bodies were reinterred

at the Eastfield Road cemetery.

There are many notable people associated

with St John’s including Robert Scarlett

who was the Parish Clerk and Town

Sexton. He was born in 1496 and died

on 2 July 1594 at the age of 98 – and is

most famous for burying two Queens in

Peterborough Cathedral – Katherine of

Aragon and Mary, Queen of Scots. “Old

Scarlett” buried the dead of Peterborough

twice over in his lifetime. Little wonder they

called him the “King of Spades”.

If this has whetted your appetite then

our booklet “A History of Peterborough

Parish Church 1407-2007”, priced £2,

is available from St John’s church and

GIRLS FOOTBALL GROWING AT PACEHampton FC are currently rolling out a project which will see their female section explode over the coming months. The club currently run an Under 10 girls team in the Cambridgeshire S-Tech League and now plan to introduce a further four teams for the 2012/2013 season.

In January they introduced a Girls Development Centre which is currently working with girls from 7-9 to allow them to develop basic technique before they move into league football in September. Then in addition the club are preparing to introduce Under 13, Under 14 and Under 15 age groups allowing girls from 7 to 15 the opportunity to participate in organised football at the club.

With a range of highly qualified coaches waiting to start working with the girls, they are guaranteed an excellent level of coaching to ensure they reach their full potential.

The club will be hosting a Girls Football Day on Friday 8 June, which is being run by Huntingdonshire Football Association to allow any girls interested in football the opportunity to come along and enjoy a fun and interactive day.

Can you make a positive impact on a child’s life?Do you have the qualities to help care for someone else’s child and to give them a loving and supportive home?

There are over 300 children in care in Peterborough but not enough foster families to help care for them whilst they are unable to live at home. Peterborough City Council needs 40 new foster carers to come forward and help make a positive impact to these children’s lives.

People from all walks of life are needed. There are common misconceptions about who can become a foster carer – for instance you can be single or married, young or old, male or female, gay or straight, have no children or a house full, be in perfect health or have a disability. The only thing we ask is for you to have a spare room and an interest in helping local children and their families. You also need a clean criminal record and not be reliant on a fostering allowance as an income as there maybe times when you may not have a child in your care.

If you decide to become a foster carer it’s a fantastic career opportunity as you will become a childcare professional, which means you’ll receive free training and ongoing support, a fee and a weekly allowance per child that you foster.

Ormiston Bushfield Academy’s (OBA) brand new building is currently under construction at Orton Centre, Peterborough. The £20.6 million project is set to be completed in July this year. Academy Student Sam Ladds (17) is keeping track of progress as construction continues... With less than 100 days to go, the future of technology at OBA’s new building is now being decided. Ideas have been bounced around, and the final meetings are taking place, particularly focusing on the innovative technology that will be on offer to all students. Although the final decision had not been made at the time of writing, Mr Winstone, Principal of the academy said, “We must keep up to speed with an educational and technological environment that is changing faster than ever.” - Sounds exciting! The academy’s future recently got a major boost as the BGL Group – best known for Meerkat advertised comparethemarket.com brand – announced a £30,000 partnership with OBA over the next three years. This partnership will provide invaluable opportunities for existing and future pupils. In fact, A-level economics students have already met with BGL Group’s finance director, Graham Charlton, for an inspiring talk.

This summer, National Citizen Service (NCS) is being delivered by the Young Lives Consortium in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough. Young Lives have been selected as one of the National NCS delivery partners and are delighted to have a significant number of places available for 16 year olds.

NCS is a three week programme running throughout the summer, for young people in Year 11; during which they will learn new skills, challenge themselves, work as part of a team and have the opportunity to give back to their local community. The programme consists of two, five day residentials, after which participants will choose a local issue or cause to help, developing and delivering their own social action project.

This is an amazing opportunity and the good news is it is FREE, as it is partly government funded.

I went along to The Beautiful Truth

Salon which is newly located above

Antony James Hairdressers on Cowgate

to indulge myself with a luxurious Gel Toes Pedicure

with Nadia.

The salon décor was beautiful and relaxing, I

thoroughly enjoyed the luxurious massage pedicure

chairs and that was even before the treatment

began. The 75 minute treatment includes; soak,

cuticle work, lower leg exfoliation, hard skin removal,

lower leg and foot massage and a file and shape

with gel toes. There was such a huge collection of

the colour gels I found it hard to choose, after much

debate I went with the gold sparkle gel. My feet felt

smooth and my toes looked amazing and it lasts 6-8

weeks. I’ll definitely go back again...

With my limited knowledge of hypnosis being drawn from watching stage hypnosis on television, I wasn’t really sure what to expect when I arranged an appointment with Veronica Wellington Hypnotherapy.

Having a phobia of spiders for as long as I can remember and the uncanny ability of being able to find a spider every where I am, a chat with Veronica assured me that after my hypnotherapy session I probably wouldn’t want to pick up a spider, but would not freak out if I saw one. The session lasted for around 50 minutes and during this time you are sitting in a very comfortable chair and have headphones on, through which Veronica plays calming music and talks to you in a serene manner and encourages you to completely relax. There is not one particular feeling that you get

when hypnotised, some people feel they drift very far away from daily life, others wonder if they are actually hypnotised at all. I found it to be the former, and felt totally relaxed. Whilst in this relaxed state the mind is more open to positive suggestions for change. The great thing about it is the changes start to happen so naturally that you wonder what all fuss was about in the first place. I left the session feeling very relaxed and calm. Early signs are very encouraging, I have found myself feeling a lot more comfortable at home (an old house ideal for spiders) and though I haven’t been tested with a massive spider as yet the ones I have seen haven’t bothered me any where near as much as before. And no urge to pick one up and give it a name!

ON YER BIKEThere’s no better way to spend a day out, pedaling through the beautiful countryside, along traffic-free tracks and purpose-built trails, nature spotting and getting fit in the fresh air!

There are bikes for everyone regardless of age or ability

and as members of the Association of Cycle Traders and

Safe Bicycle Hire Scheme they ensure that your bike is

adjusted accordingly and you are suitably equipped for

your adventure.

Although I just turned up to hire a bike for the day (you

can also hire for 2hrs) they recommend that you call

ahead to book your hire bikes at weekends and during the

summer holidays.

I hired a Giant (that’s the make and not the size)

mountain bike, but you can also hire road bikes, hybrid

bikes, kid’s bikes, tandems, trailer bikes, buggies and off

course helmets and locks.

There are plenty of places to stop for comfort breaks

around the circuit and lunching at the ‘The Finch Arms’

with stunning views over Rutland Water. It’s worth the

pain and suffering to get there.

Not just restricted to Rutland Water, Rutland Cycling also

has hire centres at Whitwell, Grafham and Fineshade

Woods. So if you were looking for either a family day out

or an individual adventure, any of these locations would

be a fantastic way to start your cycling career.

How many calories?30 minutes of recreational cycling (5mph), can burn up

between 75 and 155 calories. Step it up to 10mph, and you

could burn over 300 calories!

Fitness TipsExhale forcefully at the top of the movement when you do

abdominal crunches. It forces your abs to work harder.

Don’t exercise when you’re sick—unless your symptoms

are above the neck. And even then you might do better

taking a day off.

Food & Drink TipsDishes labeled deep-fried, pan-fried, basted, batter-

dipped, breaded, creamy, crispy, scalloped, Alfredo, au

gratin, or in cream sauce are usually high in calories.

Fizzy drinks are a huge source of hidden calories. A litre

bottle of regular cola packs over 400 calories!

Blockbuster film! Katniss Everdeen is a survivor. She has to be; she’s representing her District, number 12, in

the 74th Hunger Games in the Capitol, the heart of Panem, a new land that rose from the ruins of a post-apocalyptic North America. To punish citizens for an early rebellion, the rulers require each

district to provide one girl and one boy, 24 in all, to fight like gladiators in a futuristic arena. The event is broadcast like reality TV, and the winner returns with wealth for his or her district.

An age heralded as liberating female fashion - with shorter-hemlines, figure-hugging fabrics, outfits that did not discriminate against size, and that certain je ne sais quoi that has since characterized the notion of elegance and sophistication – the 1950s are once again embracing the catwalks with models sashaying down the runways at Jill Sander, Louis Vuitton and Gucci, to name but a few.

Yet, looking back at fashion trends, it appears that many styles have never truly left our fashion-consciousness.

The chemise dress was, and still remains, the epitome of feminine class. Straight cut and without a defined waist, it allowed the woman to decide what part of her waist she wanted to define by tying the dress with a belt, thereby being a style that would flatter most figures. Marks and Spencer’s and Warehouse have recently produced a range of chemise dresses in everything from oriental to candy-stripe prints, and at reasonable prices.

Fur also became a status symbol in the 50s, but as it was only affordable for the rich, a whole new enterprise for imitation fur opened up to cater to the increasing demand.

Alongside this, animal print became increasingly fashionable, the long-lasting popularity of which can still be seen in the tribal fashion trends each summer. Other prints which made a statement in the mid-century, but which still remain are checks and florals; tartan and gingham are still hugely popular (Topshop and New Look have reinvented them to form their current interpretation of the ‘Grunge’ trend in the form of shirts, skirts and summer shorts) and floral prints remain a huge thumbs-up on any style meter.

The 1940s and 50s redefined fashion in a revolutionary way which is still being seen today; on the high street, Topshop, River Island and Marks and Spencer’s have their fingers on the fashion button with cigarette pants, pencil skirts, round-neck blouses in pretty pastels (a la ‘Grease: The Movie’) and cocktail dresses to die for. For a real taste of the 50s, though, check out ‘Vivien of Holloway’ online which stocks amazingly beautiful 50s-style dresses. So, this season, embrace your inner glamour-puss, pour yourself a Manhattan, and remember: vive la 50s!

FESTIVALSFestival season is almost here, and whatever type of music you’re into, there’s sure to be a music festival showcasing it. For the majority of festivals, you have to be over 16 to go without an adult, but if you’re not yet 16 then don’t worry, as Underage Festival is for 13-17 year olds only. Whether just for the day or for a weekend camping, I really would recommend going to a festival, if not for the music then purely for the atmosphere and the experience. A word of warning though - if you’re camping, be prepared to leave your vanity at home and just have fun with the experience, it’ll be worth it! To explore Zambia is to step back into Africa as it was meant to be. Often described

as the ‘real’ Africa, Zambia has been relatively untouched by humans and is famed for

its huge protected wilderness areas, its natural landscapes and, arguably, the most

diverse range of animals and birds in Africa. It also has some of the friendliest people

you will find on the continent with over 73 different tribes living in harmony.

Set on the high plateau of the tropical belt of south-central Africa, 1300 metres above

sea level, Zambia boasts 19 National Parks including two of the largest in Africa in

Luangwa and Kafue; two of Africa’s great rivers in the Zaire and the Zambezi; the vast

man-made ‘inland sea’ of Lake Kariba; and the magnificent Victoria Falls. The capital is

Lusaka, the fastest growing city in central Africa and a stepping stone for discovering

the country.

The mighty Zambezi River runs through the country and its name, along with Victoria

Falls, evoke images of the wilds of Africa. Livingstone, near Victoria Falls, has much to

interest the visitor including fascinating museums and a number of cultural villages.

The awe-inspiring Victoria Falls are known locally as “Mosi-oa-Tunya” or the “Smoke

that Thunders” and this is fitting for the Zambezi dramatically plunges some 120 metres

into a vast gorge creating a spray that rises over 500 metres into the sky.

Zambia is the land of

the legendary African

walking safari,

the awe-inspiring

Victoria Falls, the

mighty Zambezi

River, breathtaking

lakes, abundant

wildlife, and raw,

pulsating wilderness,

all in one friendly

country.

The Lower Zambezi area is refuge to an

abundance of wildlife & birdlife and offers

various styles of safari including walking and

canoe safaris, which enable one to get close

to the wildlife in its natural habitat.

The size of Wales, Kafue is one of the world’s

largest National Parks. It has an amazing

diversity of eco-systems and a profusion

of wildlife and is definitely one of the most

interesting and rewarding parks in Africa.

Luangwa National Park offers some of the

best game viewing in Africa and provides the

rare opportunity of guided walking safaris.

The Luangwa Valley forms part of the Great

Rift Valley with the valley floor nestling some

800 metres below the surrounding plateau.

The valley is dissected by the impressive

Luangwa River and is sanctuary to a great

Zambia – The Real Africa

profusion of wildlife. North Luangwa is less

well-known but offers a unique wilderness

experience. Primarily a woodland park it is

renowned for its huge herds of buffalo as well

as a great variety of other mammals.

Other parks of note include Nyika National

Park and Nsumbu, which boasts 180km of

Lake Tanganyika’s shoreline.

For the active or adrenalin-junkie the country

offers an array of exciting activities including

bungee jumping off Victoria Falls Bridge,

white-water rafting or canoeing down the

Zambezi, elephant back trails, horse-back

safaris, quad biking and scuba diving at Lake

Tanganyika.

Accommodation across the country is of a

high standard with an excellent selection

of luxury safari camps and lodges in all of

the major parks. Clean and comfortable

rustic camps are generally used on walking

safaris and in Lusaka and Victoria Falls there

are hotels ranging from 3 to 5-star deluxe.

The best time to visit is between May and

October, although in the green season (March

& April) the landscape comes alive following

the rains, making for a spectacular array of

colours and many migrant birds also arrive.

Zambia is wild but inviting and a must for

any serious safari enthusiasts.

Jubilee PlansTo mark 60 years of The Queen’s reign the

Diamond Jubilee will take place in 2012. The

celebrations will centre around an extended

weekend in 2012 on 2, 3, 4 and 5 June.

The Queen came to the throne on 6 February 1952 and her coronation

took place on 2 June 1953.

She celebrated her Silver Jubilee (25 years) in 1977 and her Golden Jubilee (50 years)

in 2002.

The website www.thediamondjubilee.org is a useful resource for history, images,

games and a great way to send a message to the Queen for her Jubilee year!

The Queens Diamond Jubilee Tour started in March and runs through until the 25 July.

www.2012queensdiamondjubilee.com lists the route.

National events are celebrations can be found at www.direct.gov.uk/diamondjubilee

The Big LunchThe fourth annual Big Lunch will

fall on the same weekend as the

Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. So

anyone who would like to celebrate and commemorate the Queen’s 60 year reign can

do so by holding a Big Jubilee Lunch! Some 10 million people came out in sunny 1977

to celebrate the Silver Jubilee.

The beauty of The Big Lunch is that people themselves decide everything about their

own event. The venue can be wherever you want or have space, the theme whatever

you fancy - food and people are the key ingredients. Quite simply, The Big Lunch want

to get as many people as possible to sit down and have lunch with their neighbours

on the first Sunday in June. After all The Big Lunch is all about community, friendship

and fun!

FUNDiese l HatchbacksBY ROB TAYLOR

Can a warm diesel hatchback ever catch - or even dispatch - its equivalent petrol hot hatch? Rob Taylor finds out.

The man driving behind me in the Nissan 350Z is clearly

disgruntled. Things have not yet degenerated to rude hand

gestures or hostile horn honking, but after a number of

abortive attempts to overtake, he is more animated than

And the cause of his chagrin? A little diesel hatchback -

Mini’s new Cooper SD - which, on these tight, demanding

and technical B-roads, is more than a match for his over-

endowed monument to OPEC.

As the road straightens he does finally overtake - is he

shocked by the ‘D’ badge affixed to the rear I wonder - but

not before the Mini has made its point.

It’s on a mission to disprove the well-worn notion that

frugality and fun are mutually exclusive. Also along for the

ride and itching to upset the status quo are the Seat Ibiza FR

CR TDI and the Citroen DS3 1.6 HDI DSport.

All three of these sporty diesel hatchbacks promise fun

and frolics, monumental fuel economy - over 60mpg - and

release less harmful gas than their average owner after

a lunch of baked beans on toast: just under 120g/km. All

well and good, but just how great a disparity exists between

official fuel economy figures and those achieved with some

vigorous and fancy-free driving? After all fun is fast, isn’t it?

Beep, beep!

So I hopped into my Acme Corporation time machine, set

the dials to 1965 - when fuel cost pennies and the roads

were clear - and unsurprisingly landed in the depths of

Shropshire’s cow country, eager to put them to the test. And

also determined to show the onlooking cattle just how far the

diesel engine has evolved from the example spluttering away

in the bowels of Farmer Palmer’s tractor.

The Mini SD faces the toughest test, not only because it must

deflect the usual sneer from petrol-heads, but it must also

answer the expectations awoken in anyone familiar with the

illustrious ‘S’ badge too. ‘S’ must indeed stand for ‘super’

and while the SD is not quite ‘super-dooper’, it doesn’t

disappoint. It is without doubt the car to beat in this class.

The 2 litre 143bhp engine propels the turbocharged style

icon from 0-62mph in 8.1 seconds and rides a torque wave

of 225lb ft on to a top speed of 134mph. It is a thoroughly

advanced engine too: it isn’t especially noisy at low speed

or start-up, which is good, since it insists on deploying stop/

start technology at every turn.

The pretty and stylish Citroen DS3 makes do without such

cleverness and despite appearing the most avant-garde it’s

relatively old school, making do with an ethos of less weight,

Page 40: The City Scene - May 2012

less power. Weighing 1050kg, it gets just 110bhp and 199lb

ft of torque from its 1.6 litre engine, but that’s all it needs

to hit 62mph from rest in 9.8 seconds and a top speed of

118mph. However, its engine feels less refined, having more

lag and sounding a little crude.

A lack of firepower is of no concern for the Seat Ibiza. Styling

by Machismo, prodigious torque of 236lb ft, 0-62mph in

8.2 seconds and 143bhp speak clearly of its intentions. It

certainly feels quick and that’s good, as adding a Formula

Racing badge to any Seat is a bold statement.

This three door model has stiffened suspension and XDS - a

‘virtual’ limited slip differential - so it really hangs on in the

bends. Predictably though, the ride is hard on your spine if

not your wallet.

And if the gulf in interior cabin quality between the Mini and

the Citroen is evident it isn’t glaring. The price difference

is however: the as-tested SD costs £23,830; the DS3 is

£18,186 and the FR is £18,750. This matters a great deal.

So too do the actual fuel economy returns I achieved:

SD, 52.9mpg; FR, 53.8mpg; DS3, 60.7mpg. The DS3 also

scores well in terms of driving range (courtesy of its 48 litre

fuel tank), since in the real-world nothing stifles progress

like refuelling. Man in 350Z take note.

And so to the matter of fun. Do these oil-burners excite the

motoring juices like their petrol-powered siblings? Well, not

quite, but the margins have never been tighter.

Riding a relatively small band of torque is no substitute

for seeing the revs climb to the top-end, but as a total

package, a Jack of all trades, these cars are outstanding:

a true motoring panacea. Accessible low-down torque

makes overtaking a cinch, a well-engineered chassis and

- particularly in the SD - accomplished handling make for

almost all of the thrills and none of the exorbitant fuel bills.

You’ll be laughing all the way to the bank instead of crying

all over the petrol tank. And nothing is more fun and

satisfying than that. I know, as I last saw the man in the

350Z parked up at the pumps.

After all, The Road Runner always wins.

WHAT’S ON

Ryan’s Football Preview

BLACKBURN V WIGAN (7th)

This local derby has the potential to live long in the memory of those that witness it. Last season both these two retained their Premier League status in the final 90 minutes of the season, few would bet against it going that far again. At the time of writing both clubs sit in the bottom three, level on 28 points each. Comforting though is that just 1 point separates the three teams above them, with poor old Wolves laying 6 points adrift at the bottom. When it gets to this stage of the season very often it’s about which team keeps their nerve the best and managers and fans alike care about one thing, results. Roberto Martinez, the Wigan boss is of a slightly different ilk though. His philosophy of trying to play expansive, easy on the eye football regardless of what’s resting on the result is something that has to be admired. Last season the latics achieved safety like this and if they are to be successful in doing that again they certainly won’t be ditching their footballing beliefs. Blackburn have had a roller coaster year, none more so than their boss Steve Kean who, as I’ve talked about in earlier articles, has had to deal with a torrent of abuse from home fans at many games. Despite this they remain only one of two sides to beat Manchester United at Old Trafford this season and have shown great fight and togetherness added with some real quality in the form of Nigerian Yakubu and Junior Hoilet. It’ll take a braver man than me to predict the outcome of this fixture but don’t expect either side to be abandoning their beliefs, they’ve both been here before.

POSH PreviewAt the time of writing the Posh sit in 17th, 9 points above the relegation zone with a total of 48. With 4 games to go any Posh fan that tells you they wouldn’t of been happy if offered that in August is either deluded or far too expectant for my liking. Its not a certainty yet but for me the achievement of staying in what is one of the most exciting divisions in Europe would exceed even the incredible feat that is three promotions in four seasons. The reasons for this are simple. You only have to look at the size and history of a good three quarters of the teams to appreciate that this season survival had to be the only aim, the fact it could be attained with games to spare is just the icing on the cake. Next season ambitions may slightly change,(very often though the second season can be even more difficult) but for now let’s toast, (almost) what has without doubt been another successful season.
