Why Play G lf?

Golf is a unique all round sport which can be:

Played by people of all ages

Adaptable to fit your lifestyle

Played alone or in groups

What is golfing etiquette? The manners and customs in golf are known as etiquette. The idea

behind etiquette is to give everyone a chance to play their best,

compete fairly and have fun. Golf etiquette is a mixture of common

sense and courtesy. Every golfer regardless of experience or level

of play will be expected to abide by the same code of behaviour.

Can you play golf without joining a club? You do not have to be a golf club member to play golf - due to changes

in society and lifestyle, golf club membership is no longer for everyone.

You can ‘pay and play’ and take lessons with no commitment.

I think golf is elitist and male dominated - is this true? It may have been in the past but not anymore. Peterborough Golf is

open to everybody to come and try golf and see if you love it as much

as we do. Golf is a stimulating challenge combined with getting out

in the fresh air in pleasant surroundings. A round of golf is not only

enjoyable, it is an excellent way of exercising, as an average 18 holes

usually involves walking between three to five miles.

There are very few other sports that can provide all of the above, so it is hardly surprising that there are an estimated 1.7 million regular golfers in Great Britain.

People can find out more about fostering at a special event being hosted by Peterborough City Council during Foster Care Fortnight at the Town Hall, Bridge Street, Peterborough, on Thursday 19 May 2011 between 5pm and 7pm.

Foster Care Fortnight takes place from Monday 16 May to Sunday 29 May 2011 and is the annual UK-wide campaign co-ordinated by the Fostering Network. It aims to raise awareness of fostering and encourage potential carers to come forward. The theme of this year’s event is ‘fostering: time to care’.

People are invited to go along to the information evening and chat to Peterborough City Council’s fostering team and foster carers to find out more about fostering.

People living and working in the East of England will soon benefit from an extended daylight hour Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) thanks to the operational partnership of two air ambulance charities based in the East.

The move to cover the extended daylight hours during the summer months will see the East of England

Ambulance Service Trust (EEAST), work in partnership with East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA) and Essex and Herts Air Ambulance Trust (EHAAT) to ensure the six counties they serve (Essex, Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk and Suffolk) are covered for a longer period.

The helicopters are tasked by the EEAST Clinical Coordination Desk located at Broomfield Hospital to attend incidents where patients require expert clinical care at the time they need it the most. Specially trained HEMS Doctors, Paramedics and life-saving support equipment feature on all four aircraft operated by the two charities and can be rushed to the scene of an incident, effectively bringing the hospital to the patient and enabling life-saving procedures to start at the earliest opportunity.

All three organisations will work together to provide extended flying hours (from 7am to 9pm or sunset whichever is earlier) ensuring coverage of the Eastern region.

More lives to be saved with extended flying hours

Simon Green, children in care services manager for Peterborough City Council, said: “Foster carers have a vital role to play in giving children in care the best possible start in life. If you have time to care and are able to help a child develop both emotionally and physically, you can experience the best rewards by giving a child or a young person a home. Training and support is provided on an ongoing basis. We will also need part-time carers for children with disabilities.”

Foster carers receive support from the city council including regular visits from a dedicated fostering worker for ongoing information,

support and guidance and identify training and development needs. Training is also provided for new carers as part of their induction. Foster carers also receive an allowance for each child they foster which goes towards the care of the child. There is also a 24-hour staffed helpline where foster carers can talk to experienced fostering staff.

There will also be two further events on Wednesday 29 June 2011 between 5pm and 7pm and on Thursday 28 July 2011 between 2pm and 4pm.

Playtime has been transformed for youngsters attending the Phoenix School in Peterborough with the opening of a new playground thanks to some determined fundraising from charity, Wooden Spoon.

Phoenix School in Orton Goldhay, Peterborough has over 100 pupils and students from two to 19 year old who have a range of abilities and needs, not catered for in mainstream schools.

With many of the School’s youngsters dependent on wheelchairs for mobility the

layout and equipment of the new playground was going to be costly.  As a charity, Wooden Spoon’s mission is to improve the quality of and life prospects for children and young people who are physically and mentally  disadvantaged and so its Eastern Counties’ branch stepped-in to help with £25,000.

The donation from Wooden Spoon meant that specialist equipment makers, GL Jones designed the new play area which includes swings and a roundabout to which wheelchairs can be fixed.

The playground took two months to build and fit and was opened

Greenwood Academies Trust has been chosen as the preferred partner to run a new academy on Reeves Way at the former Hereward Community College in Peterborough. The trust will work closely with Peterborough City Council to put together a bid to the government to open the school as a Free School from September 2013.

Greenwood Academies Trust was selected because of its strong history of improving outcomes in challenging schools, its experiences of working with multi-ethnic groups and for its overall vision for the school.

Wittering Primary SchoolWittering Primary is a good school where children flourish, behave outstandingly and achieve above the national average in English and maths, according to Ofsted inspectors.

Inspectors visited the school on Church Road, Wittering, Peterborough, in March and rated it good overall with a good capacity for sustained improvement. Of the 31 categories the school was inspected in, 20 were judged to be good and 11 outstanding. The school’s early years foundation stage was rated outstanding as well as the behaviour of pupils, the extent to which pupils feel safe, and the care, guidance and support pupils receive.

Inspectors found that there is a positive atmosphere at the school which is borne out of good relationships between adults and pupils.

Overall the quality of teaching was rated good. Consistently good teaching ensures that by the time pupils leave the school attainment is above average in English and maths. Inspectors noted that this is good considering most pupils arrive at the school with skills below those expected for their age.

The Ofsted report in full is available at www.ofsted.gov.uk

Wooden Spoon makes playtime fun for

in March by Wooden Spoon President and founder member, Peter Scott MBE.

Money raised by Wooden Spoon in the Eastern Counties goes to benefit local schemes. Other recent projects include new furnishings for Acorn House, which provides residential support for families with children receiving treatment at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge and refurbishment work to the kitchen of Little Haven’s Children’s Hospice in Benfleet, Essex.www.woodenspoon.com

The new school will be co-educational and will cater for up to 850 pupils aged from 11 to 18 years. It will have a city-wide catchment, a strong community focus and will work closely with post-16 education providers such as Peterborough Regional College, City College Peterborough and a future STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Centre to ensure young people can access post 16 courses relevant to their learning needs and career aspirations.

An application to run the Reeves Way school as a Free School is expected to be submitted to the government by mid-May. The final decision rests with the Education Secretary Michael Gove and is expected in the autumn.

Soap & Glory - Flake Away Scrub

Hi Beauties, Now that summer is officially here, it’s time to get that body buffed to perfection, say bye bye to dull skin and hello to smooth glowing skin. Follow my head to toe exfoliation tips and you’ll be showing off that skin in no time.

FaceAlthough our skin may look fine from a distance, look up close in the mirror, you may see tiny black dots, normally found on either side of the nose and T section. I use The Body Shops Tea Tree Blackhead eliminating scrub a couple times a week and apply it using an exfoliating face sponge to really get that dirt out. RRP £5

BodyMy favourite body scrub is the delicious Flake Away Scrub by Soap & Glory, not only does this smell divine on your skin, but it makes you feel so moisturised, use in the bath or shower on wet skin to get smooth silky glowing skin. Available in a small travel size too, just keep it away from your other halves, mine seems to have emptied by itself???RRP £6.64 from Boots

LipsKeep those lips in top kissable condition with one of my favourite products – Lip Scuff from The Body Shop. This moisturising lip care product gently exfoliates the lips to help remove dead skin cells, leaving the lips feeling smooth, soft and conditioned. Use once or twice a week. RRP £8

FeetThe best time to tackle your feet is at the end of a bath or shower when the skin is softer, try using any good foot scrub and a foot file, once out of the shower, smother in a rich foot cream and slip on some cosy socks, your feet will be revived in no time. I recommend the Sanctuary Luxury Foot Polish RRP £5.10 from Boots

Splurge Vs SaveThis month I noticed a rival to my favourite YSL Perfect Touch foundation brush RRP £32, L’Oreal have brought out it’s new Infallible foundation brush, boasting 24 hour coverage and at a snip at a third of the price of the YSL version RRP £12.99

Garnier Ultra Lift Firming Mask I picked this up on my weekly trip to boots as it was only £1.28 and it’s a 2 pack. It goes on just like a normal face mask and then you wash it off, straight after my skin felt soft and firmer, perfect if you want to revive tired looking skin before a night out and a bargain price!

Make-Up Corrector PenMeet the UK’s first eye make-up remover pen from Simple, this innovative product is a magic wand which erases makeup mishaps so wonky eyeliner flicks or smudged mascara will be things of the past. Keep it in your handbag for on-the-go makeup perfection! RRP £4.99 from Boots

Gel Tinkle Toes, I didn’t really

Susan’s Nails

Pointed Gel Nails - £30

a set £25 overlay and

£15 for infill

I headed along to Susan’s Nails on Fitzwilliam Street to try out the new trend sweeping 2011, the pointed nail is back, originally popular in the 70’s, nail technicians across the world are embracing this past trend and modernising it up with colour changing gels, crystals, nail art and more.

Being a more simple styled nail

enthusiast I opted for the french

pointed gel nails. Normally being

a loyalist acrylic pink and white

was nice to try something new.

Gel nails work differently than

acrylic, as in the name a gel

liquid is applied to the nail which

is hardened under a UV light, the

white nail tip is built up in white

gel and then the main part is in a

pink gel, the whole process took

roughly 2 hours and voila, I had

I cringed at the thought of getting my trotters out of their warm winter hibernation, so I booked an emergency appointment at A1 Cosmetics and Beauty to see Gina Whomes at the Park Inn Hotel, opposite ASDA.

When I arrived, Gina made me feel instantly relaxed, I think the heated foot spa and the nice warm heated- bed helped too! Gina gave me a foot and leg exfoliation after a luxurious soak in the foot spa. You just cannot beat having your feet massaged; it makes you feel like you are walking on air. After more gorgeous creams and lotions to moisturise my stems, Gina then wrapped my feet in warm booties to make sure the lotions really penetrated my skin. Then a trim, file and shape and off to the rack of OPI varnish to choose my colour. I went for a French polish for the spring...... Oh what treat and all for £30!! Thank you very much Gina, I will be back.

FITNESS MYTHS

Myth 3 – Lifting lighter weights will tone and define my musclesWhilst starting with a lighter load is advisable, if you are

new to exercise or starting a new lifting programme.

Eventually you need to overload your muscle with

more weight. Muscle responds to overload and

once you overload the muscle, it will become tighter

and firmer. The harder your muscle works, the more

muscle repair is required, which equals more calories

used to repair the overload.

Myth 4 – The best way to lose body fat is to eat very little caloriesWhilst reducing your calories intake steadily will

enhance weight loss. Decreasing the calorie intake

drastically will make your body revert to starvation

mode. Survival in this instance is the body’s number

1 priority, to prepare for survival the body will go into

emergency mode and hold onto your fat stores.

Regular frequent snacks and meals are the key to

success. Better to lose a little often, than to often not

lose a little.

Mark Gordon www.fitness2health.co.uk

Myth 1 – If you want to reduce the size of your hips, backside or stomach, then you should exercise that areaUnfortunately body fat is reduced from all over the

body and not a specific area. You maybe making

things worse in some cases, by exercising that zone

(i.e. squats will add size to your backside). Body fat

will generally burn from the inside first and then finally

hit those hard to get areas, which typically are the

first places to gain. You need to ensure that you

combine weights, cardio and nutrition.

Myth 2 – Lots of running, cycling, x-training and rowing is the key to losing body fat (all known as Cardio)I’m not going to fault anybody who is committing

to the above regime, as it is a form of exercise. But

too much will have a negative affect on your overall

physique. Basically too much cardio will eventually

put your body into a calorie deficit and then start to

use your muscles for an energy source NOT GOOD!

You will then start to lose your definition and tone.

Muscle is metabolically active and burns more

calories at rest. Try to combine a toning session with

short bursts of cardio to preserve muscle.

I’m sure that you have had heard lots of

conflicting exercise tips over the years,

about the best way to train. So it’s time to

shed some light on a few fitness myths,

floating around in the fitness world.

THE PILE OF STUFF AT THE BOTTOM OF THE STAIRS by Christina Hopkinson Hodder & Stoughton £12.99

I met journalist and fellow author Christina Hopkinson recently and liked her enormously, partly because her life seemed even more chaotic than mine. She’s bright, funny and seemingly unflappable. She was about to go on live TV but had her small sticky children clambering all over her off-stage - as she had a childcare crisis on her hands. I love the title of her new novel – and was

REVIEWS

Riding high in the bestseller charts with her new novel, Chances, author Freya North tells us what she’ll be reading this month.

Everyone’s heard of Mrs Beeton… yet many foodies and top chefs credit Hilda Leyel’s recipes as their inspiration to cook. Born in 1880, she wrote The Perfect Picnic in 1936 but it’s as relevant now as it was then: inventive recipes championing local, seasonal ingredients. Heading in to picnic season, this is a lovely book to read - where recipes are delicious yet practical.

Who hasn’t tried to overdo it with complicated dishes that result in a sticky mess and a smorgasbord for pesky ants and wasps?

Try menu 25 – sausages with French mustard, beetroot salad, goats cheese with wholemeal scones and apple flan for dessert. Or no 43 – chicken pate, pork chops with apple puree, salad, Madeira cake for pud.

As Mrs Leyel says in her preface: “No one is too old to delight in such a simple pleasure as a picnic in lovely surroundings.”

THE PERFECT PICNIC by Hilda Leyel Square Peg £9.99

LONDON UNDER by Peter Ackroyd Chatto & Windus £12.99

Peter Ackroyd’s previous books London: The Biography and Thames: Sacred River have quite rightly won various awards and sold in the zillions. You really don’t have to be a Londoner, or even a city-dweller to be captivated by them. Now, with all the zeal and eloquence of a passionate tour guide, Ackroyd takes the reader deep under the city – somewhere he astutely describes as “a second earth… it elicits sensations of wonder and of terror. It partakes of myth and dream in equal measure.” The book is fantastically atmospheric – digging deep into what goes on underground when an age-old city lies above it. Fascinating, eerie and compelling reading.

delighted to find the content of the book just as entertaining yet insightful too. A completely relevant read for all working mums.

Mary Gilmour, the heroine, senses her life is going down a plug hole clogged with cornflakes and Play-Doh. She works part time, housework appears to be a second, full time job and she finds she has no time for her sons or husband Joel. In fact, she

thinks a lot of the mess – in the house and in her marriage – is his fault. So she hatches a plan – star charts worked for her children so she designs the equivalent for Joel. And she gives him six months to redeem himself. Essentially, the novel is a love story – very funny yet sensitive too. It’s about families living happily in the unitidily-ever-after. You’ll laugh, you’ll nod – and you’ll feel a bit better of your own pile of stuff at the bottom of your stairs.

Don’t get them off on the wrong footAccording to a recent study four million British children are wearing the wrong-size shoes. It’s a shocking statistic – and one that heralds a generation of millions of adults with foot problems in years to come.

Podiatrists say that 70% of adults suffer from foot

health problems brought on by the wrong footwear

in childhood – problems like blisters, pressure sores,

in-growing toe-nails, hammer toe and knee and

posture problems.

The study found that less than half of parents took

into account whether their children’s new shoes

fitted correctly, when buying them.

James North, proprietor of the Footprints shoe store

in Peterborough’s Westgate, says that simply buying

shoes by top brands will not solve the problem.

“Parents come in to us and say that they have

bought well-known brands but their children are still

having problems – and that’s because the shoes

aren’t fitting properly.

“What they don’t realise is that the shoes must

be fitted by a shoe-fitting specialist, who knows

what they are doing.”

Footprints are fitting specialists for ladies and

children, with all six members of staff trained by the

Society of Shoe Fitters (SSF) – the organisation set

up to ensure that shoppers get the right shoes and

the right advice. Footprints manageress, Rosemary

Gray, actually teaches the SSF trainers.

They stock most of the top brands for children –

including Start-rite, Ricosta, Geox, Lelli Kelly, Kickers

and Primigi.

And such is Footprints’ reputation for getting it right

for their customers that they have become Ricosta’s

largest UK independent stockist.

The Footprints range also covers width fittings C, D,

E, F, G and H – so there’s a huge choice of children’s

footwear and no need to settle for second best.

Two-fifths of parents who took part in the study

also admitted to buying shoes too big so that their

children would grow into them over time, saving

money. But, like buying cheaper shoes sold without

expert advice and proper fitting, this is actually false

economy, according to the SSF.

The shoes fall apart and parents end up buying two or

three more pairs and paying just as much as if they’d

invested in good quality shoes in the first place. And

because the cheaper shoes don’t come in half-sizes

and a variety of width fittings, they don’t fit properly.

Take a step in the right direction for your children. Buy

their next pair of shoes from Footprints at 10 Westgate,

Peterborough.

The store is open from

9am-5pm, Monday-Saturday

and 11am-3pm on Sundays.

on offer, give them a call on 01733-313890,

HallwaysHallways are notorious

as dumping grounds.

No matter how small

your space you

should find a way to

accommodate visitors

coats and shoes.

Designs for coat and shoe racks can range from

multi-functioning free standing ones, to slim line ones

that attach to the wall – choose ones that work with

your space as these need to aid the situation, not

add to it. If you have no carpet on the stairs, consider

getting the bottom steps made into pull out drawers

and if you have available space underneath your

stairs, consider converting it. Pull out storage works

great if your hallway is wide enough, if not; add

shelves or use it to store household items such as the

vacuum cleaner and ironing board.

KitchenThink about how you can utilise the space more

effectively. Do you really need all those gadgets on

show? Think about a drop down TV, or a pull out/drop-

leaf table that will help to maximise minimal space.

Stacking storage systems are available for internal

cupboard areas that really help to maximise them to

the full. Keep utensil and cutlery drawers in order by

investing in drawer dividers and organise the space

under the sink by collating all cleaning materials

together. If you are big on recycling then stay on

top of it by having designated areas for each of the

materials you recycle.

BathroomConsider installing

a bath panel that

pulls down as these

are great for storing

bathroom items like

shower gel, soaps,

Storage SolutionsA place for everything and everything in its place; how hard can it be?

Over the years we collect an unbelievable amount of clutter.

Some things we hang on to for

sentimental reasons, others we

keep hold of – ‘just in case’, and

sometimes it’s simply a matter

of family growth. But how do we

contain it all, especially now

minimalist is the new trend?

New houses never seem to offer

enough storage space, whilst

older properties offer space that

is awkward and hard to utilise.

So, what can be done?

Start by looking around your home to

consider the amount of storage space you

realistically need. Identify your problem

areas and be honest; would a clear-out help

to free up storage space or is it definitely a

matter of having to accommodate more?

If it’s about accommodating more, look

at updating single-functioning pieces of

furniture with multi-functional ones to provide

quick fix solutions. If updating furniture is

not an option then simply decide what

items need to be hidden away in order to

generate more room.

shampoos etc. Purchase a hammock with suckers,

or invest in some string bags with hooks – these

are terrific for storing kids’ toys or individual bits and

pieces. If space allows, opt for a mirrored cabinet

– these come in various shapes and sizes and

provide excellent storage areas. Add over the door

coat hooks to house spare towels, laundry bags, or

individual wash bags.

BedroomsIf you haven’t got floor

to ceiling wardrobes,

consider investing in

some. Alternatively,

think about internal fitments. Most wardrobes can

accommodate two hanging rails. Install a pull-out

trouser rail and you may even find you have enough

space to install some shoe racks underneath.

Purchase some hanging pockets that hook over the

top of a door for housing shoes, scarves and belts

and if you haven’t got a bed with drawers, make

full use of the space underneath by investing in

durable storage boxes or vacuum bags for seasonal

storage solutions.

Living RoomAs the main room of

the house, this can get

a little messy if items

do not have a defined

space. Kid’s toys can be

stored in blanket boxes,

wicker boxes and storage

pouffes or hidden behind multi-functional screens.

Large multi-storage units are available that will house

all game consoles, gaming equipment, audio

equipment, CD’s and DVD’s that you have.

Whatever storage solutions you need, don’t be afraid

to think outside the box, you may think space is an

issue but there are lots of different storage ideas

available and with a little imagination you will be

surprised at what you can achieve.

Top carpet tips from HEREWARD CARPETS1 Polypropylene fibres offer greater stain resistance and are bleach cleanable.2 Quality underlay will not only improve the underfoot comfort, but will add life to the carpet.3 Regular vacuuming will extend the life of your carpet by removing grit & dirt that can damage the fibres.4 Deal with spillages as soon as possible, and dab the stain, do not rub!5 Have wool carpets ‘Guardsman’ Treated (similar to Scotchguard).

Britain’s Got Talent meets Knight RiderThis is a definite, ‘ask your Dad’ moment. Who was Knight Rider?? Well if you’re tuned into Britain’s Got Talent and see one of the new judges, David Hasselhoff, that’s Knight Rider. Back in the 80’s, television was awash with fast cars and chases through downtown US cities. The car in this one was KITT (Knight Industries Three Thousand), the coolest car ever created (at the time) equipped with AI capable of getting almost anyone out of any sticky situation, particularly it’s driver Michael Knight. In 2008 TV series in the US bought KITT back, with more gadgetry, this time staring Justin Bruening from Cold Case and CSI; Miami. It’s worth a Google to just hear the intro music to the 80’s series!

FASHION

On the catwalk, we were presented with a whole

new feeling of optimism, colours, romanticism, and

flirty, cheerful fashion trends which have been filtered

down to the high street for you to buy!

Vivid, strong, colours of neon green, orange, and

yellow were spotted at Michael Kors, Calvin Klein, Jil

Sander, Max Mara, Prada, and Gucci. Forget any

shade that is dusty or muted - spring is all about the-

bolder-the-better brights. But what really sets these

colors aglow are the unexpected combinations:

pink, orange, and deep purple; turquoise and taxi

cab yellow; lime and emerald green. The easiest

way to wear this trend, though, is to go tonal, by

pairing a neutral vest with a bright fluorescent skirt

or spin the colour wheel and work with opposites:

cobalt and aquamarine is this season’s biggest

partnership and stores like Debenhams have lots of

versions to suit all ages and shapes.

Keep bags and shoes neutral, your lips either bare

or brilliant, and hair minimal. It all adds up to a very

colourful new you.

Romantic girls around the world, unite! Girly,

romantic style is “in” for spring/summer 2011,

expressed through large floral prints and sweet,

bohemian dresses. Topshop has a selection of long,

flowing maxi-dresses – if you do buy one of these

summer essentials, make sure it suits your body

shape. For the larger lady, get a dress which goes in

just underneath your bust and flows outwards as this

will mask your stomach; similarly, go for jewel block

colours rather than large prints. If you’re smaller, go

for a dress that cinches in at the waist to create

those desirable curves, with a halter neck and

bright colours! Ditsy prints are back, so get some

Subaru WRX STI saloonBy Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Writer

Twitter: @barnesclaymedia

Introduced at the end of last year, the 2011 Subaru WRX STi is a substantial upgrade to the high performance version of the Impreza. And it is a welcome comeback, because it sees a four-door saloon rejoin the range after a three-year absence from the UK.

The major difference between Subaru and other brands begins with the balance and control that comes from its permanent Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and Boxer

engine. But, unlike most performance cars, the Japanese motor manufacturer’s WRX STI doesn’t just excite while in motion. Its styling, both inside and out, is geared towards making petrol-heads drool. New bumpers, enlarged rear quarter panels and a lower ride height give the car a more muscular presence than ever before.

Inside, the quality of the cabin materials has been upgraded, and the driver and passenger are assured of a secure and comfortable seating position thanks to the introduction of all-new RECARO bucket seats. Behind the wheel, your feet settle easily onto the drilled aluminium pedals and you instantly feel at one with the car. The thick, leather-wrapped steering wheel gives you easy access to audio switches and cruise control buttons, meaning you can concentrate on the road ahead without taking your hands off the wheel. The only thing left is a quick press of the push-button engine starter to bring the vehicle to life.

Aficionados of Subaru performance motors will love the sound the car makes when it starts up; a new exhaust system, with a bigger centre muffler and larger diameter piping, enhances the engine’s iconic boxer ‘burble’. And at the core of the WRX STI beats the heart of a champion — the turbocharged 2.5-litre Subaru Boxer engine. The lump propels the car from 0-62mph in just 5.2 seconds and the smooth 6-speed manual transmission lets you savour every sweep of the glowing red rev counter. As you match revs to extract the most of the engine’s charitable torque curve, you feel the 158mph performance potential of the WRX STI firmly within your grasp.

But the fun isn’t all about being first off the lights because, unlike most cars, with the WRX STI you control the set up. The Subaru features a default setting of 41 / 59 per cent front / rear torque distribution for optimum balance, and you can adjust this while on the move using the four-mode

THE SUBARU WRX STI is like nothing else on the road. It combines power with precision and rally-bred performance with everyday practicality, putting it in a class of its own.

(Driver’s Control Centre Differential) system. The WRX STI also incorporates Multi-Mode VDC (Vehicle Dynamics Control) – Subaru’s version of electronic stability control (ESC), allowing you to modify the point of intervention of this electronic driver aid to suit your own tastes. Subaru has further tuned its three-mode SI-Drive (Subaru Intelligent Drive) system, which can be used to adjust the engine’s characteristics to best suit a variety of driving conditions.

You may have noticed during this review that there has been very little mention of the name ‘Impreza’. Well, there’s a reason for that – it seems those six letters (WRX STI) are so synonymous with automotive exhilaration that the moniker has been dropped and the new model is now simply known as the ‘Subaru WRX STI’. But whatever it’s called, the car will continue to be a superstar – certainly in the hearts and minds of speedy Subaru purists.

Peterborough based Architects and Care Home specialists Portess and Richardson Architects were successful in winning the Pinders Healthcare Design Awards in the Best Restoration/Extension category for the design of The Royal British Legion’s Care Home, Halsey House in Cromer.

An audience of over 550 packed into Lords’ Cricket Ground for the annual celebration of care home design. They gave a warm welcome to Sir Michael Parkinson, who presented the awards and talked passionately about his role as the Government’s Ambassador for Dignity for the Elderly.

Portess and Richardson Artchitect’s winning design encompassed a 60 bed extension to the existing home and a new 16 bedroom Dementia Care Wing. Employing best practice principles for dementia care the 16 bed unit provides secure accessible gardens and a variety of resident facilities, including quiet lounges, therapy rooms, activities spaces, resident kitchen dining spaces and a hairdressers.

The unique Investors in the Environment accreditation scheme is one of many projects managed by green charity Peterborough Environment City Trust (PECT) in support of Peterborough’s growing reputation as the Home of Environment Capital.Green awards were presented to:

Anne Corder Recruitment, whose paperless office processes have become a blueprint for adoption by other businesses

Bakkavor Freshcook, which achieved zero waste-to- landfill last year

Kerry Foods of Spalding, which has set up an ‘Eco Pilot office’ to showcase its reduction in energy consumption

Digital print specialist Mister Vinyl, which now re-uses and recycles most of its materials

Queensgate Shopping Centre, which won its second year accreditation and has saved over 26 per cent on energy since 2006, recycled 64 per cent of waste, reduced waste going to landfill by a further 11 per cent in 2009 and another eight per cent in 2010.

And also to; Cross Keys Homes, The Environment Agency, IKEA distribution centre, Mars Petcare, PCL Energy Services

The Investors in the Environment scheme is unique because, to secure the green accreditation, businesses must achieve a minimum two per cent improvement in resource efficiency over an agreed baseline figure. Other essential criteria include having a recycling system in place, adopting a travel plan, calculating the organisation’s carbon footprint and setting targets for carbon reduction.

Main sponsors of the IIE scheme include the Environment Agency, waste management company Donarbon and renewable energy products provider Lark Energy.

Businesses save money by investing in the environment

Twelve Peterborough businesses that are cutting running costs while protecting natural resources were presented with prestigious Investors in the Environment accreditation awards in April.

Ryan’s Football Preview

From the likes of Tottenham’s valiant Champions League exploits (pictured) and Ian Holloway’s colourful interviews to Birmingham City’s shock Carling Cup win and Stoke City’s great run to The FA Cup final. Also lest we forget the emergence of youngsters like Arsenal’s Jack Wilshire, Javier ‘chicharito’ Hernandez and the elevation to global superstar of Gareth Bale, this year has certainly been a memorable one.

In the Premiership we’ve seen the most open League since it began 19 years ago with almost every team still with plenty to play for heading into this month, for many different reasons! Both Arsenal and Chelsea will no doubt continue to breathe hard down Man United’s necks until the bitter end, especially with them both having the chance to take 3 points from the red devils, (Arsenal v Man United, Sun 1st, Man United v Chelsea, Sun 8th). Man City and Tottenham are fighting it out for that 4th Champions League spot and their match will sure to be a special affair too, (Tues 10th). You then have the Merseyside bragging rights at stake with Liverpool and Everton wanting to top each other to finish in the top 6 and at the time of writing probably only Bolton Wanderers have what you may call ‘nothing’ to play for as the 10 point buffer they have is almost certainly enough to keep them safe from relegation. After that we have a huge battle to avoid the drop. In my opinion no fewer than 12 teams are still walking the tightrope to Premier League survival with only 5/6 matches remaining. Normally we have at least 1 team miles adrift at the foot of the table but this year there is none. All 3 current occupiers of the relegation places, (Wolves, West Ham and Blackpool) rightly believe they have every chance of getting

out of trouble and teams all the way up to Newcastle in 9th will not feel they are out of it just yet. One thing is certain though, the twists and turns of this season are nowhere near over yet.

This month brings an end to what has been a truly special domestic football season. We’ve seen some great games, some fantastic goals and results that nobody would’ve really predicted.

POSH PreviewWith a 10 point advantage on 7th placed Rochdale at the time of writing, and only a possible points total of 12 from the remaining 4 games, Darren Ferguson’s men are all but guaranteed a playoff berth come the middle of this month. Their one and only league fixture comes at home to Dagenham and Redbridge and after last month’s 2-0 victory in the reverse fixture, confidence should be high. After that a 2 leg semi final and then a, (fingers crossed) final at Wembley. Here’s to hoping we can all celebrate a third promotion in 4 years!!
