enjoyable, it is an excellent way of exercising, as an average 18 holes

The Raft Race for 2011 is being organised by the Rotary Club of the Deepings. Building on previous years’ successes, the traditional and important part of The Deepings calendar will be hosted on Sunday 7 August. The Raft Race dance will be taking place on Friday 5 August.

Peterborough Lions Showtime is the biggest public social annual event for the club. It will be held again at the Parkway Club, Peterborough on 24 – 26 May 2011. This year’s presentation will be the 25th two hour show. The Harlequin Musical Drama Society will be making their very welcome 3rd appearance at Showtime where they received standing ovations in 2009 and 2010.

Songs and dances that boosted morale during WWII was the theme of 2009. Last year they

performed non-stop hit songs of the 50s and early 60s. The Parkway Club, Maskew

Avenue, Peterborough is the venue (formerly BRSA Club). Peterborough Lions’ Club serve

£1 million fund now available for literacy projects

The Clore Duffield Foundation has launched a new £1 million programme to fund poetry and literature initiatives for children and young people across the UK.

The aim of the Poetry and Literature Awards is to provide children and young people with opportunities to experience poetry and literature in exciting and compelling ways, in and out of school.

The Awards will run from 2011 to 2015 and will allocate amounts up to £10,000 in two funding rounds a year. Schools, FE colleges, community groups, libraries and other arts / cultural organisations are eligible to apply. For a free guidance leaflet and how to apply visit www.cloreduffield.org.uk. The Rotary Club of the Deepings

An energy-saving project that has helped hundreds of Peterborough families escape from fuel poverty has been shortlisted for a top European award.

The ‘Warm Homes Peterborough’ project – run over two years by green charity Peterborough Environment City Trust (PECT) – has delivered energy-saving advice and practical help to 1,500 households in Dogsthorpe, Central Ward, Paston, Ravensthorpe and East Ward.

People can find out more about fostering at a special event being hosted by Peterborough City Council during Foster Care Fortnight at the Town Hall, Bridge Street, Peterborough, on Thursday 19 May 2011 between 5pm and 7pm.

Foster Care Fortnight takes place from Monday 16 May to Sunday 29 May 2011 and is the annual UK-wide campaign co-ordinated by the Fostering Network. It aims to raise awareness of fostering and encourage potential carers to come forward. The theme of this year’s event is ‘fostering: time to care’.

People are invited to go along to the information evening and chat to Peterborough City Council’s fostering team and foster carers to find out more about fostering.

People living and working in the East of England will soon benefit from an extended daylight hour Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) thanks to the operational partnership of two air ambulance charities based in the East.

The move to cover the extended daylight hours during the summer months will see the East of England

Ambulance Service Trust (EEAST), work in partnership with East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA) and Essex and Herts Air Ambulance Trust (EHAAT) to ensure the six counties they serve (Essex, Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk and Suffolk) are covered for a longer period.

The helicopters are tasked by the EEAST Clinical Coordination Desk located at Broomfield Hospital to attend incidents where patients require expert clinical care at the time they need it the most. Specially trained HEMS Doctors, Paramedics and life-saving support equipment feature on all four aircraft operated by the two charities and can be rushed to the scene of an incident, effectively bringing the hospital to the patient and enabling life-saving procedures to start at the earliest opportunity.

All three organisations will work together to provide extended flying hours (from 7am to 9pm or sunset whichever is earlier) ensuring coverage of the Eastern region.

Simon Green, children in care services manager for Peterborough City Council, said: “Foster carers have a vital role to play in giving children in care the best possible start in life. If you have time to care and are able to help a child develop both emotionally and physically, you can experience the best rewards by giving a child or a young person a home. Training and support is provided on an ongoing basis. We will also need part-time carers for children with disabilities.”

support and guidance and identify training and development needs. Training is also provided for new carers as part of their induction. Foster carers also receive an allowance for each child they foster which goes towards the care of the child. There is also a 24-hour staffed helpline where foster carers can talk to experienced fostering staff.

There will also be two further events on Wednesday 29 June 2011 between 5pm and 7pm and on Thursday 28 July 2011 between 2pm and 4pm.

Playtime has been transformed for youngsters attending the Phoenix School in Peterborough with the opening of a new playground thanks to some determined fundraising from charity, Wooden Spoon.

Phoenix School in Orton Goldhay, Peterborough has over 100 pupils and students from two to 19 year old who have a range of abilities and needs, not catered for in mainstream schools.

With many of the School’s youngsters dependent on wheelchairs for mobility the

layout and equipment of the new playground was going to be costly. As a charity, Wooden Spoon’s mission is to improve the quality of and life prospects for children and young people who are physically and mentally disadvantaged and so its Eastern Counties’ branch stepped-in to help with £25,000.

The donation from Wooden Spoon meant that specialist equipment makers, GL Jones designed the new play area which includes swings and a roundabout to which wheelchairs can be fixed.

The playground took two months to build and fit and was opened

Greenwood Academies Trust has been chosen as the preferred partner to run a new academy on Reeves Way at the former Hereward Community College in Peterborough. The trust will work closely with Peterborough City Council to put together a bid to the government to open the school as a Free School from September 2013.

Greenwood Academies Trust was selected because of its strong history of improving outcomes in challenging schools, its experiences of working with multi-ethnic groups and for its overall vision for the school.

Wittering Primary SchoolWittering Primary is a good school where children flourish, behave outstandingly and achieve above the national average in English and maths, according to Ofsted inspectors.

Inspectors visited the school on Church Road, Wittering, Peterborough, in March and rated it good overall with a good capacity for sustained improvement. Of the 31 categories the school was inspected in, 20 were judged to be good and 11 outstanding. The school’s early years foundation stage was rated outstanding as well as the behaviour of pupils, the extent to which pupils feel safe, and the care, guidance and support pupils receive.

Inspectors found that there is a positive atmosphere at the school which is borne out of good relationships between adults and pupils.

Overall the quality of teaching was rated good. Consistently good teaching ensures that by the time pupils leave the school attainment is above average in English and maths. Inspectors noted that this is good considering most pupils arrive at the school with skills below those expected for their age.

Money raised by Wooden Spoon in the Eastern Counties goes to benefit local schemes. Other recent projects include new furnishings for Acorn House, which provides residential support for families with children receiving treatment at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge and refurbishment work to the kitchen of Little Haven’s Children’s Hospice in Benfleet, Essex.www.woodenspoon.com

The new school will be co-educational and will cater for up to 850 pupils aged from 11 to 18 years. It will have a city-wide catchment, a strong community focus and will work closely with post-16 education providers such as Peterborough Regional College, City College Peterborough and a future STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Centre to ensure young people can access post 16 courses relevant to their learning needs and career aspirations.

An application to run the Reeves Way school as a Free School is expected to be submitted to the government by mid-May. The final decision rests with the Education Secretary Michael Gove and is expected in the autumn.

Peterborough gets ready for two weeks of fun filled, green themed events between Saturday 28th May and Sunday 12th June.

This year’s Peterborough Green Festival is set to kick off on Saturday 28th May and will mark the 20th anniversary of the event in the city.

Run by Peterborough Environment City Trust (PECT), most events are free to take part in and whilst the full line-up is still being confirmed, organisers from the charity are aiming to provide something for everyone.

Each year there is a theme for the Green Festival and this year PECT is partnering with Travelchoice to encourage everyone to car share, walk, cycle, and use public transport to save money, get fit, and help the environment.

The launch event on Saturday 28th May, held in Cathedral Square, will feature a host of stalls, stands, activities, entertainments, music, games, competitions, and give-aways. There will also be a stage-bus (a working bus that will transform into the main stage),

I headed along to Susan’s Nails on Fitzwilliam Street to try out the new trend sweeping 2011, the pointed nail is back, originally popular in the 70’s, nail technicians across the world are embracing this past trend and modernising it up with colour changing gels, crystals, nail art and more.

enthusiast I opted for the french

pointed gel nails. Normally being

a loyalist acrylic pink and white

girl for the last 10 years, ouch, it

was nice to try something new.

acrylic, as in the name a gel

liquid is applied to the nail which

is hardened under a UV light, the

white nail tip is built up in white

gel and then the main part is in a

pink gel, the whole process took

roughly 2 hours and voila, I had

Myth 3 – Lifting lighter weights will tone and define my musclesWhilst starting with a lighter load is advisable, if you are

new to exercise or starting a new lifting programme.

Eventually you need to overload your muscle with

more weight. Muscle responds to overload and

once you overload the muscle, it will become tighter

and firmer. The harder your muscle works, the more

muscle repair is required, which equals more calories

used to repair the overload.

Myth 4 – The best way to lose body fat is to eat very little caloriesWhilst reducing your calories intake steadily will

enhance weight loss. Decreasing the calorie intake

drastically will make your body revert to starvation

mode. Survival in this instance is the body’s number

1 priority, to prepare for survival the body will go into

emergency mode and hold onto your fat stores.

Regular frequent snacks and meals are the key to

success. Better to lose a little often, than to often not

lose a little.

Myth 1 – If you want to reduce the size of your hips, backside or stomach, then you should exercise that areaUnfortunately body fat is reduced from all over the

body and not a specific area. You maybe making

things worse in some cases, by exercising that zone

(i.e. squats will add size to your backside). Body fat

will generally burn from the inside first and then finally

hit those hard to get areas, which typically are the

first places to gain. You need to ensure that you

combine weights, cardio and nutrition.

Myth 2 – Lots of running, cycling, x-training and rowing is the key to losing body fat (all known as Cardio)I’m not going to fault anybody who is committing

to the above regime, as it is a form of exercise. But

too much will have a negative affect on your overall

physique. Basically too much cardio will eventually

put your body into a calorie deficit and then start to

use your muscles for an energy source NOT GOOD!

You will then start to lose your definition and tone.

Muscle is metabolically active and burns more

calories at rest. Try to combine a toning session with

short bursts of cardio to preserve muscle.

Everyone’s heard of Mrs Beeton… yet many foodies and top chefs credit Hilda Leyel’s recipes as their inspiration to cook. Don’t get them off on the wrong footAccording to a recent study four million British children are wearing the wrong-size shoes.It’s a shocking statistic – and one that heralds a generation of millions of adults with foot problems in years to come.

Podiatrists say that 70% of adults suffer from foot

health problems brought on by the wrong footwear

in childhood – problems like blisters, pressure sores,

in-growing toe-nails, hammer toe and knee and

posture problems.

The study found that less than half of parents took

into account whether their children’s new shoes

fitted correctly, when buying them.

James North, proprietor of the Footprints shoe store

in Peterborough’s Westgate, says that simply buying

shoes by top brands will not solve the problem.

“Parents come in to us and say that they have

bought well-known brands but their children are still

having problems – and that’s because the shoes

aren’t fitting properly.

“What they don’t realise is that the shoes must

be fitted by a shoe-fitting specialist, who knows

what they are doing.”

Footprints are fitting specialists for ladies and

children, with all six members of staff trained by the

Society of Shoe Fitters (SSF) – the organisation set

up to ensure that shoppers get the right shoes and

the right advice. Footprints manageress, Rosemary

Gray, actually teaches the SSF trainers.

and Primigi.

And such is Footprints’ reputation for getting it right

Two-fifths of parents who took part in the study

also admitted to buying shoes too big so that their

economy, according to the SSF.

The shoes fall apart and parents end up buying two or

three more pairs and paying just as much as if they’d

invested in good quality shoes in the first place. And

because the cheaper shoes don’t come in half-sizes

and a variety of width fittings, they don’t fit properly.

Designs for coat and shoe racks can range from

multi-functioning free standing ones, to slim line ones

that attach to the wall – choose ones that work with

your space as these need to aid the situation, not

add to it. If you have no carpet on the stairs, consider

getting the bottom steps made into pull out drawers

and if you have available space underneath your

stairs, consider converting it. Pull out storage works

great if your hallway is wide enough, if not; add

shelves or use it to store household items such as the

vacuum cleaner and ironing board.

KitchenThink about how you can utilise the space more

effectively. Do you really need all those gadgets on

show? Think about a drop down TV, or a pull out/drop-

leaf table that will help to maximise minimal space.

Stacking storage systems are available for internal

cupboard areas that really help to maximise them to

the full. Keep utensil and cutlery drawers in order by

investing in drawer dividers and organise the space

under the sink by collating all cleaning materials

together. If you are big on recycling then stay on

top of it by having designated areas for each of the

materials you recycle.

Over the years we collect an unbelievable amount of clutter.

Some things we hang on to for

sentimental reasons, others we

keep hold of – ‘just in case’, and

sometimes it’s simply a matter

of family growth. But how do we

contain it all, especially now

Start by looking around your home to

space to install some shoe racks underneath.

Purchase some hanging pockets that hook over the

top of a door for housing shoes, scarves and belts

and if you haven’t got a bed with drawers, make

full use of the space underneath by investing in

durable storage boxes or vacuum bags for seasonal

storage solutions.

Living RoomAs the main room of

the house, this can get

a little messy if items

do not have a defined

space. Kid’s toys can be

stored in blanket boxes,

wicker boxes and storage

pouffes or hidden behind multi-functional screens.

Large multi-storage units are available that will house

all game consoles, gaming equipment, audio

equipment, CD’s and DVD’s that you have.

Whatever storage solutions you need, don’t be afraid

to think outside the box, you may think space is an

issue but there are lots of different storage ideas

available and with a little imagination you will be

surprised at what you can achieve.

Britain’s Got Talent meets Knight RiderThis is a definite, ‘ask your Dad’ moment. Who was Knight Rider?? Well if you’re tuned into Britain’s Got Talent and see one of the new judges, David Hasselhoff, that’s Knight Rider. Back in the 80’s, television was awash with fast cars and chases through downtown US cities. The car in this one was KITT (Knight Industries Three Thousand), the coolest car ever created (at the time) equipped with AI capable of getting almost anyone out of any sticky situation, particularly it’s driver Michael Knight. In 2008 TV series in the US bought KITT back, with more gadgetry, this time staring Justin Bruening from Cold Case and CSI; Miami.It’s worth a Google to just hear the intro music to the 80’s series!

new feeling of optimism, colours, romanticism, and

Now in its 13th spectacular year, the Peterborough Dragon Boat Festival is proving as popular as ever, as companies, organisations and clubs from across the city and surrounding area, sign up what they hope will be winning teams. The 2011 East of England Show will once again see the Showground filled to the gunnels with horses, cattle, sheep, pigs, food, music, attractions, trade stands and much, much more. The event will see livestock of the highest quality being shown over all 3 days, and this year will be hosting both the Longhorn National Show and the Beef Shorthorn National Show.

Introduced at the end of last year, the 2011 Subaru WRX STi is a substantial upgrade to the high performance version of the Impreza. And it is a welcome comeback, because it sees a four-door saloon rejoin the range after a three-year absence from the UK.

The major difference between Subaru and other brands begins with the balance and control that comes from its permanent Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and Boxer

engine. But, unlike most performance cars, the Japanese motor manufacturer’s WRX STI doesn’t just excite while in motion. Its styling, both inside and out, is geared towards making petrol-heads drool. New bumpers, enlarged rear quarter panels and a lower ride height give the car a more muscular presence than ever before.

Inside, the quality of the cabin materials has been upgraded, and the driver and passenger are assured of a secure and comfortable seating position thanks to the introduction of all-new RECARO bucket seats. Behind the wheel, your feet settle easily onto the drilled aluminium pedals and you instantly feel at one with the car. The thick, leather-wrapped steering wheel gives you easy access to audio switches and cruise control buttons, meaning you can concentrate on the road ahead without taking your hands off the wheel. The only thing left is a quick press of the push-button engine starter to bring the vehicle to life.

Aficionados of Subaru performance motors will love the sound the car makes when it starts up; a new exhaust system, with a bigger centre muffler and larger diameter piping, enhances the engine’s iconic boxer ‘burble’. And at the core of the WRX STI beats the heart of a champion — the turbocharged 2.5-litre Subaru Boxer engine. The lump propels the car from 0-62mph in just 5.2 seconds and the smooth 6-speed manual transmission lets you savour every sweep of the glowing red rev counter. As you match revs to extract the most of the engine’s charitable torque curve, you feel the 158mph performance potential of the WRX STI firmly within your grasp.

But the fun isn’t all about being first off the lights because, unlike most cars, with the WRX STI you control the set up. The Subaru features a default setting of 41 / 59 per cent front / rear torque distribution for optimum balance, and you can adjust this while on the move using the four-mode

Well, there’s a reason for that – it seems those six letters (WRX STI) are so synonymous with automotive exhilaration that the moniker has been dropped and the new model is now simply known as the ‘Subaru WRX STI’. Peterborough based Architects and Care Home specialists Portess and Richardson Architects were successful in winning the Pinders Healthcare Design Awards in the Best Restoration/Extension category for the design of The Royal British Legion’s Care Home, Halsey House in Cromer.

An audience of over 550 packed into Lords’ Cricket Ground for the annual celebration of care home design. They gave a warm welcome to Sir Michael Parkinson, who presented the awards and talked passionately about his role as the Government’s Ambassador for Dignity for the Elderly.

Portess and Richardson Artchitect’s winning design encompassed a 60 bed extension to the existing home and a new 16 bedroom Dementia Care Wing. Employing best practice principles for dementia care the 16 bed unit provides secure accessible gardens and a variety of resident facilities, including quiet lounges, therapy rooms, activities spaces, resident kitchen dining spaces and a hairdressers.

Regional commercial property agency firm Jeffersons Commercial LLP – which is based in Cambridge - is to merge with property consultancy Carter Jonas LLP whose commercial work across the eastern region is carried out from its Peterborough and Cambridge offices. The merger is effective from 1 May 2011.

The Jeffersons team, led by Will Mooney and Ben Oughton will relocate to Carter Jonas’ Cambridge office. Mooney and Oughton will become Equity Partners with immediate effect. They will be responsible for running the agency and professional departments for the eastern region.

From the likes of Tottenham’s valiant Champions League exploits (pictured) and Ian Holloway’s colourful interviews to Birmingham City’s shock Carling Cup win and Stoke City’s great run to The FA Cup final. Also lest we forget the emergence of youngsters like Arsenal’s Jack Wilshire, Javier ‘chicharito’ Hernandez and the elevation to global superstar of Gareth Bale, this year has certainly been a memorable one.

In the Premiership we’ve seen the most open League since it began 19 years ago with almost every team still with plenty to play for heading into this month, for many different reasons! Both Arsenal and Chelsea will no doubt continue to breathe hard down Man United’s necks until the bitter end, especially with them both having the chance to take 3 points from the red devils, (Arsenal v Man United, Sun 1st, Man United v Chelsea, Sun 8th). Man City and Tottenham are fighting it out for that 4th Champions League spot and their match will sure to be a special affair too, (Tues 10th). You then have the Merseyside bragging rights at stake with Liverpool and Everton wanting to top each other to finish in the top 6 and at the time of writing probably only Bolton Wanderers have what you may call ‘nothing’ to play for as the 10 point buffer they have is almost certainly enough to keep them safe from relegation. After that we have a huge battle to avoid the drop. In my opinion no fewer than 12 teams are still walking the tightrope to Premier League survival with only 5/6 matches remaining. Normally we have at least 1 team miles adrift at the foot of the table but this year there is none. All 3 current occupiers of the relegation places, (Wolves, West Ham and Blackpool) rightly believe they have every chance of getting

out of trouble and teams all the way up to Newcastle in 9th will not feel they are out of it just yet. One thing is certain though, the twists and turns of this season are nowhere near over yet.

This month brings an end to what has been a truly special domestic football season. We’ve seen some great games, some fantastic goals and results that nobody would’ve really predicted.

POSH PreviewWith a 10 point advantage on 7th placed Rochdale at the time of writing, and only a possible points total of 12 from the remaining 4 games, Darren Ferguson’s men are all but guaranteed a playoff berth come the middle of this month. Their one and only league fixture comes at home to Dagenham and Redbridge and after last month’s 2-0 victory in the reverse fixture, confidence should be high. After that a 2 leg semi final and then a, (fingers crossed) final at Wembley. Here’s to hoping we can all celebrate a third promotion in 4 years!!
