The recent period of growth was brought to a sudden halt in 2010 as a result of the imposition of a new levy on cigarettes which increased prices by Dinars 6-8 per pack with the result being a 6.6% fall in sales by the end of 2010 to XX billion pieces. Volumes grew by 1.1% in 2011, to XX billion pieces, but strengthened in 2012 on the back of falling contraband sales to reach XX billion pieces.

2 Production and Trade

Private sector involvement in cigarette manufacturing came with the announcement in April 2001 that local company, Bentchikou Tobacco and US Company, Maclean Group had reached an US$ XXX million agreement to grow tobacco and manufacture cigarettes. A facility at Aïn Milila was constructed where seven brands of cigarettes were planned to be produced. The current status of the venture has not been reported. The BAT facility is operated independently by the multinational and is based on Oran. Algeria Statistics puts output in 2010 at XX billion pieces with production of blonde cigarettes at XX billion pieces. SNTA reported output up 24.5% in 2011 compared with 2010.
