The Christmas Pantomime

One of Scotland’s most historic and significant theatres, King’s Theatre Glasgow opened in 1904 and has played

host to top stars and shows ever since. Well known for its Christmas pantomimes, it also provides Glasgow’s flourishing amateur groups with a high-profile stage. The theatre continues to present first class shows today from a wide range of genres.

The pantomime at the King’s has been running annually since 1971. Before that a few pantomimes were staged from 1964/65 after Glasgow Corporation bought the theatre from Howard & Wyndham Ltd. Pantomime in Scotland has always been popular, particularly in Glasgow, and there has been a long tradition developed from the 1860s. Wee Wullie Winkie by William Miller

Wee Wullie Winkie rins through the toun,

Upstairs and doun stairs, In his nicht goun,

Tirlin at the window, Cryen at the lock,

Are all the weans in their bed for its now ten o’clock?

Hey Wullie Winke are you comin ben?

The cats singing grey thrums to the sleeping hen,

The dog’s spelders on the floor and dins gie a cheep,

But here’s a waukrife laddie that wanna fa’ asleep,

Anything but sleep you rogue glowerin like the moon,

Rattlin like airn jug wi an airn spoon,

Rumblin, tumbling wound about,

Crawin like a cock,

Skirlin like a kenna what,

Waukin sleeping folks.

Hey Wullie Winkie, the weans in a creel,

Wamblin aff a body’s knee like a verry eel.

Ruggin at the cats lug, Ravllin a her Thrums.

Hey Wullie Winkie see here he comes,

Weeried is the mither that has a stoorie wean.

A wee stumpie stousie that canna rin his lane,

That has a battle aye wi sleep,

Before he’ll close an ee,

But a kiss frae aff those rosy lips, geis strength anew tae me.

The guest speaker at the Nov. ’19 meeting was our very own member, Roger Weed, and his presentation focused on the Scottish Regiments. He began with a quick overview of the first two amalgamations of the HLI and the Royal Scots Fusiliers in 1959, and then went on to discuss the amalgamation of the Seaforth and Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders in 1961. The talk concluded with where they are sta-tioned today and where their regimental museums are located for those who would like to visit them when in Scotland.

Christmas PantomimeKing’s in the 1980s in Cinderella, written and directed by him. The management asked him to bring back the same production the following year. He refused, but said 'maybe in eight or ten years.' He kept his promise and returned for his final panto-mime appearance in 1991. In 2005, the company First Family Entertainment took over production of the annual pantomime, and First Family Entertainment are now responsible for a doz-en productions up and down the country. The current produc-tions run during the festive period until mid January, totalling over 70 performances during the run, with two performances daily, six days a week.

Gerard Kelly was for 20 years a regular performer at the King’s Theatre pantomimes, every year taking up the lead comic role. Elaine C Smith appeared regularly between 1996 and 2005, however has since taken a break and in recent years has been involved as an Associate Producer. During her time starring in the pantomimes, she often took on the role of dame, mak-ing the King’s Theatre production somewhat unusual, with a female playing the dame role, which is traditionally played by a man. Scottish comedian Karen Dunbar has taken on the leading female comic role in recent years; starting in 2007 as Nanny Begood in Sleeping Beauty she then appeared in Cinderella in 2008, Aladdin in 2009, and again as Nanny Begood in 2011, she created the role of Mrs McConkey in Cinderella in 2012 and most recently appeared as The Slave of The Ring in Aladdin in 2013.

After Kelly’s death in 2010, both Gavin Mitchell and Des Clarke have taken on the lead comic role a Buttons style character. Emulating his infamous ‘Hiya pals’ into their own versions of ‘Hiya gang’ and compiling their own skits whilst still paying homage to Kelly.

The 2014/2015 Season marks 50 years since the first pantomime at the King’s, however this will only be the 47th pantomime to be staged here.

Burns’s Favorite Inn

In a letter to his publisher, Robert Burns wrote, “The Globe ... for many years has been my howff and where our friend

Clarke and I have had many a merry squeeze.” In fact, it was at The Globe Inn where Burns began an affair with barmaid Anna Park that inspired one of the bard’s greatest love poems, The Cowden Locks Of Anna. Robert Burns's favorite chair has long been an attraction at the 17th-century pub (if you sit in it, you have to treat the pub to a round and recite a Burns poem), but now the ancient timber-paneled bedroom, dining room and kitchen Burns used during his stays, complete with his bed, letters and other fascinating artifacts, have also been opened to the public. The inn is an ideal way to end a tour of the many Robert Burns landmarks in Dumfries. The Globe Inn, 56 High Street, Dumfries; www.globeinndumfries.co.uk.
