THANK YOU, DAVID FISHBURN!

I am so grateful for the incredible ministry and person of David Fishburn here at the Cathedral of St. Philip, that I have been unable to accept his retirement! But I must, with immeasurable thanks. Below you will find notes from Dale Adelmann, our Canon for Music, and from David himself about his decision to retire from his beautiful ministry here. We will have time to celebrate David later this spring; but, for now, I add my deep appreciation for his commitment and sensitivity to this holy Cathedral for these many wonderful years. This parish has benefitted mightily from the ministry of David Fishburn, and I salute his service here. Thank you, David! And thank you for blessing the Cathedral of St. Philip!

My dear friends and colleagues,

After a great deal of thought and consideration, I write to tell you that I have decided to retire from my position as Associate Organist-Choirmaster at the Cathedral. My 32 years here have been the most incredible journey, and it has certainly been the most exciting chapter in my life. Friends, colleagues, and the most talented musicians here have made it so very memorable.

But at some point, the time comes. And the time feels right. So, I will say a farewell to all of you over the coming months, probably finishing my work here later this summer. I will remain a parishioner here, and will continue living right here in Brookhaven, so I will not be far away. Hopefully, I can spend more time at my little place in Florida, will be able to spend more time in Pennsylvania with my family, and if possible will also increase my travels to various parts of the world. Many of you know how important those things are to me.

When I announced to my previous parish that I would be moving to Atlanta to become Canon for Music here, one of my choir members, a former member of the Cathedral of St. Philip, said to me, “well, you know, David Fishburn is two of the three best service players in the country!”

It has been one of the greatest joys of my career to work alongside David these nine years. David’s ability to sense and capture exactly the right mood in worship is extraordinary. His liturgical improvisation is always just right; and his flawless accompaniment of the choirs – always supporting but never overwhelming, catching every subtle nuance we want in the musical line – is legendary among our colleagues throughout the Episcopal Church. David is a most wonderful colleague. His good humor, utter unflappability on the bench, and unfailing collegiality have made collaborating with him a complete pleasure.

I have often told David that he would not be allowed to retire until I do. Yet, having devoted every weekend and every major holiday to the Cathedral in a part-time position for 32 magnificent, faithful years, we can hardly begrudge him the desire for a different pace and much more flexibility. We will have an opportunity to celebrate his ministry, musicianship, and friendship at a reception after the final Evensong of this season on May 20, and he will continue on staff through most of the summer. He will be greatly missed by us all, and especially by those of us whose privilege it has been to work with him on a weekly basis, but we wish him every happiness and we look forward to a long, continued relationship with him in the years ahead.

Room 319, Chapter RoomThe pastoral care team will present a session on “End of Life Decisions: Preparations for the Final Celebrations of Life.” Led by Canon Carolynne Williams and attorney Richard Perry, the class will look at issues relating to death and dying, funeral planning, and financial planning.

Dr. Thee Smith leads this series of co-listening classes that aim to enhance our personal, interpersonal, and intergroup ability to be fully ourselves—our true, worthy, and estimable selves. This class explores the theory and practice of genuine listening—listening with skilled awareness that can focus on everyday experiences, or range through tough political issues to include a vast variety of life choices and faith matters.

YOUNG ADULT LENTEN BIBLE STUDY

Room 240 Young adults are invited to a special Bible study led by seminarian Caroline Carson and parishioner David Boyd. Join them as they take a look at the Gospel of John.

LIVING FAITH

Room 120 Through the season of Lent, we are exploring what Ignatius of Loyola, a Spanish mystic and founder of the Jesuits, has to say to us today. We are using his Spiritual Exercises as a guide to explore Ignatian practices of prayer and discernment and to seek to hear God’s call for us. This series is led by Dr. Kyle Lambelet, a new Cathedral parishioner who teaches at Candler School of Theology, with Canons Wallace Marsh and Cathy Zappa.

THE ENJOYMENT OF BIBLICAL GREEK

Adults seeking to be confirmed, received, reaffirmed, or just (re)acquainted with the Episcopal Church are invited to join Canon Lauren Holder during the Sunday School hour, 10:10–11 a.m. for adult confirmation class. This promises to be a time of faith exploration, discernment, and fellowship. This class will meet in St. Mary's Chapel through April 22, culminating in a Confirmation service on April 29. Whether it’s in art, music, outdoor play, Godly Play, or discovery and science, we will find God’s grace.

SPIRITUALITY

PRAYER CORNER – HABITAT FOR HUMANITY

“It is more blessed to give than to receive.”I have been a volunteer with Habitat for Humanity for more than ten years. The experience lifts my heart as each year we begin with a potluck fellowship dinner. Volunteers past, present, and future gather to share a meal, and exchange news. Plans are made for the build and the anticipation mounts for the coming weeks of construction.

Coming together each following week different parishioners bring their talents and tools as contributions to the work site. Food is made and served, fellowship abounds as a house begins to take form.

As construction continues the faces of the volunteers change. Stories are shared between generations and new friendships are formed while pursuing the common goal of building something for someone else.

Finally after eight weeks of work and countless hours by many, the house is finished and ready for a family to make it their home. With the “thanks of the family” echoing in my ears, I realize that we should be thanking them for gathering us as a community in fellowship and prayer and allowing us to share in this experience of being present to God and each other.

LENTEN WEDNESDAY PROGRAM

Join us from 6–7:30 p.m. on Wednesdays for dinner and conversation. Wednesday nights in Lent, Canon Lauren Holder is facilitating a book study of Shauna Niequists’ Present Over Perfect. Lent is an ideal time to be introspective and intentional about what is running us into the ground, and what we can chose to run after instead.

Join us, even if you have not read the book. Dinner is $8 for adults and youth, and $5 for children ages 4–12. Children 3 and under eat free. RSVP at stphilipscathedral.org/present.

MARCH 19 LABYRINTH WALK AND TAIZÉ

Get your week off to a peaceful start with a labyrinth walk and Taizé this Monday, March 19. A labyrinth introduction will take place in Child Hall at 6:30 p.m., followed by a facilitated walk from 7-8 p.m. Then the Taizé prayer service starts at 8 p.m. in Mikell Chapel. Originating in Taizé, France, this simple service of scripture, music and candlelight will bring a beautiful and prayerful close to your Monday. The labyrinth walk and Taizé take place the third Monday of each month at the Cathedral. Come to one, or both – and bring a friend!

BRING JEWELRY DONATIONS ON APRIL 15

St. Veronica’s Guild is collecting vintage, estate, and contemporary costume jewelry for a glitzy and glamorous sale in September. Bring your donations to church on Sunday, April 15, when guild members will be in the Atrium to collect items. This is an opportunity to clean out your own jewelry box as well as pass along any old pieces from your grandmothers, mothers, and aunts. Even damaged pieces, single earrings, and broken items of sterling or gold will be used. While the sale will not take place until September, we need your donations now. Guild members are preparing for the sale by collecting, cleaning, repairing, and pricing jewelry in the coming weeks.

The jewelry sale will benefit Good Samaritan Health Center Friday Clinic, dedicated to helping people in the homeless community achieve well-being and stability. The sale also benefits St. Veronica’s ongoing projects of donating personal care items to four ministries: Church of the Common Ground, Crossroads Community Ministries, Emmaus House, and Church of the Holy Comforter.

The world comes to your door: our fantastic clergy with varied information regarding our collective ministry; talented staff with cheerful greetings and direction about the issues of the day; the homeless whose needs are endless but, with a cheerful smile, settle for a snack bag and good wishes; visitors with easy and difficult questions (for instance, wanting to know why there is no funeral... until we together determine they are at the wrong church!). Many who come by the Info Desk have memories of services in the Cathedral long ago, and want to walk down memory lane. If we can address the answers for the many and varied concerns, we do so, but, more often, we discern who should handle the matter and get the two parties together.

An added benefit of this job is you learn amazing details about the Cathedral. Did you know there is a St. Francis chapel? Do you have any idea how many activities, charitable and prayerful, take place on this holy ground? And, most importantly, you will meet people from all walks of life who often become friends for life! Episcopal Church WOMEN

On Saturday, March 24, the Episcopal Church Women of the Cathedral and Northside United Methodist Church’s Women’s Ministry present Awake to Wellness, a women’s retreat with Dr. Cathy Snapp and Kitty Crenshaw, authors of The Hidden Life Awakened. Cathy and Kitty will awaken our deep desire to live as God designed us, wholehearted and well-balanced—body, mind, and spirit.

In our three sessions throughout the day, we will talk about brain and body health in the context of awakening; about the brain’s capacity for renewal and transformation through focused attention; and about how a deeper awakening to our true self—our life hidden with Christ—will integrate within us a powerful spirit in its truest form.

The cost is $50/person ($45/person for tables of 8) and includes lunch from Simply Fresh. All proceeds go to Ignatian Spirituality Project, non-profit offering spiritual retreats to homeless women. Enjoy a weekend full of spirituality and fellowship with other Cathedral parishioners and clergy. Kanuga is a wonderful place to relax, enjoy the outdoors, and experience God with the beloved community.

The weekend includes old favorites such as s'mores, hiking, rocking on the porch, ice cream, bluegrass and, of course, the famous Kanuga toast. We will offer an adult program on Saturday morning and enjoy worshiping together in the informal chapel on Sunday. Meals are served family-style in the lodge and accommodations are available in historic cottages or the hotel-style inn.
