TODAY’S SCRIPTURE READINGSGenesis 2:18-24

God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper as his partner.” So out of the ground God formed every animal of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them; and whatever the man called every living crea-

ture, that was its name. The man gave names to all cattle, and to the birds of the air, and to every animal of the field; but for the man there was not found a helper as his partner. So God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; then he took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. And the rib that God had taken from the man God made into a woman and brought her to the man. Then the man said, “This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; this one shall be called Woman, for out of Man this one was taken.” Therefore a man leaves his father and his mother and clings to his wife, and they become one flesh.

Psalm 81 O God, our Governor, *how exalted is your Name in all the world!2 Out of the mouths of infants and children *your majesty is praised above the heavens.3 You have set up a stronghold against your adversaries, *to quell the enemy and the avenger.4 When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, * the moon and the stars you have set in their courses,5 What are we that you should be mindful of us, *mere mortals that you should seek us out?6 You have made us but little lower than the angels; *you adorn us with glory and honor;7 You give us mastery over the works of your hands; *you put all things under our feet:8 All sheep and oxen, *even the wild beasts of the field,9 The birds of the air, the fish of the sea, *and whatsoever walks in the paths of the sea.10 O God, our Governor, *how exalted is your Name in all the world!

Hebrews 1:1-4; 2:5-12

Long ago God spoke to our ancestors in many and various ways by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by a Son, whom God appointed heir of all things, through whom God also created the worlds. He is the reflection of God’s glory and the exact imprint of God’s very

being, and sustains all things by his powerful word. When the Son had made purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs. Now God did not subject the coming world, about which we are speaking, to angels. But someone has testified somewhere, “What are human beings that you are mindful of them, or mortals, that you care for them? You have made them for a little while lower than the angels; you have crowned them with glory and honor, subjecting all things under their feet.” Now in subjecting all things to them, God left nothing outside their control. As it is, we do not yet see everything in subjection to them, but we do see Jesus, who for a little while was made lower than the angels, now crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. It was fitting that God, for whom and through whom all things exist, in bringing many children to glory, should make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through sufferings. For the one who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one origin. For this reason Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters, saying, “I will proclaim your name to my brothers and sisters, in the midst of the congregation I will praise you.”

Mark 10:2-16

Some Pharisees came, and to test Jesus they asked, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?” Jesus answered them, “What did Moses command you?” They said, “Moses allowed a husband to write a certificate of dismissal and to divorce her.” But Jesus said to them, “Because of your hardness of heart

Moses wrote this commandment for you. But from the beginning of creation, ‘God made them male and female.’ For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.” Then in the house the disciples asked him again about this matter. He said to them, “Whatever man divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her; and if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery.” People were bringing little children to Jesus in order that he might touch them; and the disciples spoke sternly to them. But when Jesus saw this, he was indignant and said to them, “Let the little children come to me; do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the dominion of God belongs. Truly I tell you, whoever does not receive the dominion of God as a little child will never enter it.” And Jesus took them up in his arms, laid his hands on them, and blessed them.

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

Officiant The animals of God’s creation inhabit the skies, the earth and the sea. They share in the life of our world and are a part of God’s good creation. Throughout the Holy Scriptures, animals have served as reminders of God’s care and love for the world God has made. Some of them serve human beings in farming the land; others are pets, bringing companionship and gladness into the lives of many people.

So we ask God’s blessing on these animals and all that they symbolize in our lives. We recall Saint Francis’ love for all of God’s creation, giving thanks for his witness to God’s great goodness in creation. And, we pray God to grant us wisdom in our stewardship of creation.

And God said, “Let the waters bring forth swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the dome of the sky.” So God created the great sea monsters and every living creature that moves, of every kind, with which the waters swarm, and every winged bird of every kind.

And God saw that it was good. God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.” And there was evening and there was morning, the fifth day. And God said, “Let the earth bring forth living creatures of every kind: cattle and creeping things and wild animals of the earth of every kind.” And it was so. God made the wild animals of the earth of every kind, and the cattle of every kind, and everything that creeps upon the ground of every kind. And God saw that it was good.

the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. ‘Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. a Prayer for PeTs

Officiant O Supreme Spirit of Creation, from your sacred breath came forth birds and beasts, fish and fowl, creatures of such variety and beauty that we are continuously amazed at your divine imagination. These children of yours have been blessed by you, their Creator, with simplicity, beauty and a cosmic purpose.

They have been blessed as well by our greatest grandparents, Adam and Eve, who in Edenland gifted each with its own name. They have also been blessed with protection by our ancient ancestor Noah, patron saint of those who seek to preserve all that you have created. Sheep and goats, donkeys and cows, doves and serpents, fish and birds of the air were blessed by Jesus, your Son, by his being born in their company and by his making use of them in his teachings.

May we bless these animals with a Noah-like protection from all that might harm them. May we like Adam and Eve, speak to these creatures of yours with kindness and affection, reverencing their purpose in our communal creation. May we never treat them as dumb animals, but rather seek to learn their language and to be students of all the secrets that they know. May your abundant blessing rest upon these creatures who will be companions for us in the journey of life. Amen.

Presider It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, God Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. For you are the source of light and life, you made us in your image, and called us to new life in Jesus Christ our Lord. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

Presider Holy and gracious God: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Creator of all. He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world.

On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread;

and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Therefore we proclaim the mystery of our faith:

We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O God, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him.

WELCOME TO TRINITY CATHEDRALTHE MISSION OF TRINITY CATHEDRAL IS TO PROCLAIM IN WORD AND ACTION GOD’S JUSTICE, LOVE AND MERCY FOR ALL CREATION.

Trinity Cathedral welcomes everyone: people of all faiths, races, nationalities and walks of life: urban and suburban, rich and poor, gay and straight, families and singles, young, old and in-between. Hospitality is an important part of our ministry, and we hope you will feel welcome here. Please complete a visitor card and give it to one of the greeters, an usher, the receptionist in the Piazza, or leave it in the offering plate. Don’t leave without a Welcome Packet, and check us out online. And don’t be surprised if a member of our congregation calls during the week to say hello!

Bread & Wine are offered at communion. If you do not wish to receive wine, please hold your hand over the cup.

Kneeling Cushions are on racks by the doors. Please return at the end of worship.

Soft Space in the West Transept of the Cathedral is available for parents, infants and young children on Sunday mornings. Soft Space has padded floor mats, toys and more for quiet play—allowing parents to remain in the worship service. If you would like to step out with your child, ask the Reception Desk for access to the Nursery.

Children’s Book Cart in the Ambulatory has books, coloring sheets and crayons to borrow during all church services.

If you are visiting Trinity today and would like to help support our mission and ministry, Friends of Trinity donation envelopes are available at the Welcome Table. You may also donate to Friends online at www.trinitycleveland.org.

FYI: We encourage and remind you to secure and protect your personal valuables when visiting Trinity Commons.

The Flowers on the Altar are offered to the glory of God in loving memory of Lawrence & Helen Hitchcock, the Bishop & Mrs. Leonard, Mary Jane McMillin, and Alice Clark Cushing.
