Twenty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time August 25, 2019 THE BANE AND THE BLESSED I recently had friends visit from out of town. Over dinner one of them told us what his father used to say to him and his four brothers when they were quarreling with one another. His father said, “Tell your brother ‘I love you’ as angrily as want.” I just heard the story and already am trying to honor the father’s wise counsel. As it seems pro-life efforts are finding traction and gaining ground, opponents have grown more vitriolic and even violent. Especially as I listen to presidential candidates and elected leaders desperate in their defense of elective abortion, I find myself angrily saying “I love you.” A former parishioner has petitioned her diocese (not our own) asking that a priest who abused her as a child be held accountable and the diocese assume responsibility. As of this writing, her letters have either gone unanswered or she has been promised a meeting that has yet to be scheduled. To those diocesan leaders responsible, I find my- self angrily saying “I love you.” Try as I might, I cannot avoid thinking of the many children separated from their parents at our border and yet to be reunited with their parents. I can’t imagine But I try to look at those responsible for such a policy and angrily say to them, “I love you.” Not long ago I had dinner with three people. Two are longtime friends, the third an acquaintance that I don’t often see. I spoke curtly, critically and uncharitable about someone we all knew. Even as I did so I was ashamed about what I was saying. I remember it still because it was an evil thing to do, and but another reminder how fully and easily capable I am of evil. It is the struggle of a lifetime. As I write this I think of the person I harmed by my words. And I am angrily saying to him, “I love you.” I don’t know what the Lord thinks of my angry attempts to tell others, “I love you.” But I do believe that by his grace I may come one day to live what I say. The Lord be with you. Father John Parr

STEWARDSHIP

To keep your marriage fresh, cultivate laughter. Be intentional about finding countless ways to laugh together. Read funny stories to each other. Tell each other jokes.

Share the funny things that happened at work or in meetings. Don’t miss a single chance to make your spouse laugh. Laughter and love are great companions in the creation of joy. Make them yours!

HUNGER WALK/RUN

Today’s gospel tells us that entry into the kingdom does not depend on physical proximity to Jesus. We cannot spend our lives living in Church, as paramount as our worship is. No, living our faith demands much more from us, our very selves. In order to enter the kingdom, we must be from the kingdom. Our words and our actions must proclaim this kingdom as Jesus’ did. Can we be found among the poor, the vulnerable, and the lost? Do we offer welcome and hospitality to all we meet? We are called to be kingdom people. Do our lives proclaim that we truly are?

PEDAL TO PRAY MEN OF THE CROSS

Parental duties to their baptized children. Parents are the leaders of the house church and their practice of their faith is an ongoing lesson in learning by assimilation. When parents pray each day, the child learns to pray. This should not begin in second grade as part of their preparation for the sacraments, but as the child learns how to talk. When a child learns to say mommy and daddy, colors and numbers, it is time to learn the Sign of the Cross and meal prayers. When a child is old enough to converse with mom and dad, the child is old enough to say morning and night prayers, and when a child is old enough to memorize a home address or telephone number, the child is old enough to memorize the Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be. Parents can enroll their children in religious education programs beginning with Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, as well as a Catholic elementary school or the parish faith formation program. The parents’ pledge at bap-tism ensures that their child completes his or her sacraments through the reception of Reconciliation, First Eucharist and Confirmation. Van Sloun,Fr. Michael. DID YOU KNOW

Our food pantry has two freezers and a very large refrigerator. If you happen upon milk, eggs, or butter at a good price, and want to pick up an extra one for the pantry, we would certainly accept any such donations for our guests. The same would be true for any cuts of meat that you have in your freezer that you may not be using…or extra fish or venison that you have. Fresh and frozen foods are a treat for our guests, and we would welcome such donations. As always, thank you so much for your ongoing, generous support of our pantry and for seeing the face of Christ in our brothers and sisters in need. Thank you and God bless you.
