Fifth Sunday of Easter May 19, 2019 THE BANE AND THE BLESSED I am not with you for Masses this weekend as I am attending the graduation of my niece, Erin. By the time you read this she will be a graduate of UW-Whitewater. I am very grateful to Monsignor Malin for celebrating Mass and allowing me to be with family for this graced moment. By coincidence as I attend Erin’s graduation we also pray for our high school graduates and host them for breakfast. I share with our parish graduates the words I will share with my niece. They are not my words, however, but those of Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, John Roberts. He was the commencement speaker at his son’s eighth grade graduation. Chief Justice Roberts spoke these words: From time to time in the years to come, I hope you will be treated unfairly, so that you will come to know the value of justice. I hope that you will suffer betrayal because that will teach you the importance of loyalty. Sorry to say, but I hope you will be lonely from time to time so that you don’t take friends for granted. I wish you bad luck, again, from time to time so that you will be conscious of the role of chance in life and understand that your success is not completely deserved and that the failure of others is not completely deserved either. And when you lose, as you will from time to time, I hope every now and then, your opponent will gloat over your failure. It is a way for you to understand the importance of sportsmanship. I hope you’ll be ignored so you know the importance of listening to others, and I hope you will have just enough pain to learn compassion. Whether I wish these things or not, they’re going to happen. And whether you benefit from them or not will depend upon your ability to see the message in your misfortunes. May all our graduates, and all of us, be granted hearts restless for the Risen One whose peace is not the absence of struggle but the presence of love. The Lord be with you. Father John Parr

Lois and her family in your prayers. May she rest in peace.

Thanks be to God! Our parish is deeply grateful to Len Beranek for the work of his hands and heart that has made possible the Altar of Repose for the tabernacle and also the new glass case for holy relics. On The Ascension of the Lord, June 2, (not June 9th as stated

in last week’s bulletin) we will place in the reliquary the relics of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton and St. John Vianney. The reliquary is near the baptismal font as a reminder that all of us share the one vocation to holiness. Parishioners today and tomorrow are grateful to Len for sharing so generously the gifts and talents God has given to him.
