Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 27, 2019 THE BANE AND THE BLESSED At the start of vacation in July, Msgr. David Kunz and I visited the Wisconsin Civil War Museum honoring those people from Wisconsin, Michigan and Illinois who fought in the war. Yes there is a Wisconsin Civil War Museum. And no, the museum is not located in Madison or Milwaukee. It is on the lakefront in Kenosha. In case you are wondering if anything good can come from Kenosha, be assured that this museum is well worth a visit and one of Wisconsin’s notable surprises. In several of the museum’s galleries the visitor is told that the soldiers were looking “to see the elephant.” From recruitment to basic training, the long days and weeks idle in camp, in the letters home and conversations with newspaper reporters, time and again the soldiers talked about wanting “to see the elephant.” The “elephant” was battle. That doesn’t make sense. Unless we recognize that the “elephant” is not the battle itself but what the battle was for and about. I forget who it was that said we can endure any “what” if we know the “why.” This week the Church celebrates the feast of All Saints and commemoration of All Souls. We celebrate those people of faith who believed that mercy is greater than justice. We celebrate that cloud of witnesses who believe that death is not the end of us and we die not from life but into life. We celebrate all those people who believed with all their heart that grace and love are greater than violence and despair. I admire the courage of all those Civil War soldiers from Wisconsin who wanted “to see the elephant.” But with all those I pray for on All Souls, I am trusting that the prayers of all the saints will bring me to see and love this Lord who has fought and defeated death for me. The Lord be with you. Father John Parr

STEWARDSHIP

Food Gift Boxes for Caring and Sharing 2019 The Food Pantry committee will again ask parishioners to provide a Christmas gift for a family in need by filling a box with non-perishable food items. We especially want to include foods that go together to make meals. On Nov. 2 and 3, we will hand out empty boxes after Masses. Please return full boxes Sunday, Nov. 10 - Tuesday, Nov. 26th. Thank You.

“One thing will always secure heaven for us: the acts of charity and kindness with which we have filled our lives. We will never know how much good just a simple smile can do. We tell people how kind, forgiving, and understanding God is, but are we living proof? Can they really see this kindness, this forgiveness, this understanding live in us? Let us be very sincere in our dealings with each other and have the courage to accept each other as we are. Do not be surprised or become preoccupied at each other’s failure; rather see and find the good in each other, for each one of us is created in the image of God. Keep in mind that our community is not composed of those who are already saints, but of those who are trying to become saints. Therefore, let us be extremely patient with each other’s faults and failures.” ~ Saint Mother Teresa of Calcutta

THANK YOU

On behalf of the Welcoming Committee, we would like to thank all those who attended Welcome Weekend. We are very grateful for all our new members, and to all our parishioners who helped make this event successful.

Christmas Caring and Sharing 2019 will be held on Friday, December 6th from 9:00 am – noon. This very special day for our food pantry guests involves a sharing of prayer, food, and gifts for the 150 families who attend. It takes many volunteers to make this day as special as it can be for our guests. We have many roles that need filling, so please consider volunteering! We will be having a meeting on Thursday, Nov. 7th at 6:00 pm for all those who wish to volunteer to help with Caring and Sharing this year. If you cannot attend but wish to volunteer, please contact Carol Reider or Sr. Bridget. Thank you in advance for your part in helping fight hunger in our community and for bringing hope and the spirit of Christmas to these families. God bless you.

Please remember, the sick, hospitalized, military members, homebound and anyone

needing of our prayers. May they experience the healing power of God.

Catholic Faith Factor in Marathoner Eliud Kipchoge’s Historic Victory “Our God is unlimited; human being is created in the image of this God thus s/he too is not limited and that is what Eliud Kipchoge believes. "NO HUMAN IS LIMITED" is the slogan under which Kipchoge undertook in Saturday's herculean race to break the 2 hour marathon time barrier. Sometime after the run was over, away from the spot-light, Kipchoge did what he is reported to do after every race: he knelt down, bent his forehead to the ground, and made the sign of the cross, in thanksgiving for a good run. Eliud had 41 physical pacesetters flanking him during the race but Fr. Peter Kaigua of St. Paul's University Chapel, Nairobi concluded Kipchoge had thousands of spiritual pace setters. The University Chaplain celebrated Mass for Kipchoge when he left Kenya on the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, Oct. 7. Kipchoge’s mother, Janeth Rotich, is seen as a moral and spiritual supporter of her son, with local media having quoted her as saying, “I wake up at 3 a.m. every day to pray for Kipchoge. I pray the rosary.” https://www.aciafrica.org/news/245/catholic-faith-factor-in-marathoner-eliud-kipchoges-historic-victory-testimonies?

HAVE YOU SENT IN YOUR PLEDGE?

Divorced/separated adults & single/widowed parents:

The SEAS pastoral council is working to ensure that we, as a parish, are meeting as many parishioner needs as we are able. Our goal is to do what we can to help each person live their faith well and be connected to our parish family. We NEED you and we recognize that you need us, too. If you would like to give some input into how we can better serve those who are divorced, separated or are single/widowed parents (even if you are not), please join us for an initial planning and informational meeting on Monday, November 4th at 6:30 pm in the gathering place. The purpose of this meeting is twofold: 1) We would really like to hear from those dealing with the challenges that come from living as part of the Church community with these special circumstances. Needs may be spiritual, financial, emotional, every day, or once-in-awhile. We are open to ideas on how we, as Church, can assist you as well as ways you may be uniquely equipped to help others. 2) There are many misunderstandings regarding the Church’s teaching on divorce and remarriage and the effect of either or both on a person’s standing with the Church and reception of the Sacraments. We would like to take this opportunity to give a clear explanation of Church teaching and answer any questions you may have in this regard. This meeting will not obligate you in any way. Please join us and encourage others to join us on this first step of service, healing, and mutual understanding. If you have any questions, please contact: Patrick Brueggen at [email protected] or (608) 526-4424 or Jennifer Fisk at [email protected] or (608)783-0246

As of 10/22/19 Parish Target: $83,735 Received: $17,757.71

All registered members of the parish should have received a pledge card in the mail. Please return to

the diocese as soon as you can. Thank you!
