♣Ashlove’s Pet house is closingand EVERYTHING must go.There’s 50% off all items exceptFrontline products, which have 20%off. All the shop fittings are also forsale. Please see the personalmessage from Jack and Carol onpage 19.♣Please be on your guard … On25th June at 6.15pm Jennifer ofPolansky and Associates wasmugged outside the entrance to theCave Bar on Mojácar playa. Thedetails gathered after talking to Jim,of the Cave and Mark Sinclair, whowas helping and who foundJennifer’s bag, are that when Jimarrived to open up the bar at 6pm henoticed two young lads sitting on thewide, low wall between the Caveand the Cowboy Cocina. A littleafter he had opened up one of thelads came into the bar, lookedaround and went out without buyinganything. At 6.15pm Jennifer, as washer habit, approached the entranceto the Cave where she was attackedin broad daylight and her handbagsnatched, suffering head and armdamage. The muggers made off andthe police were called, who made afew enquiries but came up withnothing. So, Mark Sinclair decidedto search for the bag himself, andfollowing an obvious escape routewent up the road past Torre Bahiarestaurant to some waste groundnear the vehicle entrance into theGuardia Vieja compound, where hefound Jennifer's bag, minus her cashand credit cards.Mark's theory, worth considering, isthat the culprits have been stayingin the Guardia Vieja apartments, have noticed Jennifer's regularpattern, and decided to waylay hernear the entrance to the Los Arcoslaundry. Then, having got the cashand cards, they could easily nip backinto the Guardia Vieja compoundand "disappear".Ric Polansky attended to stoppingher cards, but thieves can acquire alot before the card is blocked.Jennifer has since been dischargedfrom hospital and is now stayingwith the Polanskys, as she recoversfrom her ordeal. It was thanks toKenny, of Cowboy Cocina, whoimmediately put the incident up onFacebook, that Mark Sinclair foundout about it and rushed down to theCave to help. This is true "localspirit". Long may it last!!♣The Fundraiser in Turre will berunning a kids painting morningevery Wednesday from 11am until1pm during the school holidays. If

Up until Friday 29th June thehighest ever temperature reading hasbeen 39.6 degrees, set near the endof June 1989. This has now beensurpassed with a new recordtemperature of 40 degrees!! Petter’shouse is at the cooler end of MojacarPlaya so, driven by curiosity, hecalibrated a gauge against hisweather station and then "took it fora drive" along the playa and outtowards Turre. Mojacar Cruce, which is not so well shielded by theSierra Cabrera, showed up as 41degrees and Mojácar Fuente wasalmost 42. The highest figure wasin the centre of Turre town, with adeadly 45 degrees. The countrysidearound Turre was one degree cooler,at 44 degrees (111 degreesFahrenheit!!)♣Alkemi Hair, Beauty andHolistics have asked me to let youknow that as from the 2nd July thesalon will be closed on Mondays.Holistic therapies with Janinehowever will still be available byappointment only as well as someevening appointments if you wouldprefer your treatments in the coolerevening air. Reading the writings of theTaoist sage Wei Po-Yang will remind us
in difficult times that, as he said,“Worry is preposterous, we don’tknow enough to worry”. I like that.I have had many an occasion in thepast to feel compelled to remindmyself of that little gem of wisdom. It has brought me through daysmore dark than I care to remember. But what if some reliable newinformation presented itself thatwas irrefutably worthy of worry? What would I do then? Well, thathas happened! I’m not going tolemming myself or build an arc ordo anything grandiose but I mustadmit to being worried. The thingis …. The internet is full! The thing is this. All internetdevices, whether they be laptops ormobile phones or in some instancesyour burglar alarm system or evenheating system all have an IP

address. This is a number that isunique to each device and nothingcould travel the net without it. Theinternet, at present, is operating ona 32 bit binary system and thissystem gives us only so manypossible combinations of unique IPnumbers. 4,294,967,296(or 4.3billion for short) is the maximumamount of IP addresses that can bestored using a 32 bit binary systemand IANA (the Internet AssignedNumbers Association) have recentlyhanded out the last ones. There areno more! Now IANA are going backthrough numbers that have beenhanded out in the past to see if theyare being used and are harvestingor recycling the ones that aren’t.This is a noble endeavour but it isn’tgoing to solve the problem in thelong term. We are going to have tomake a new start. The only longterm solution is going to be to throwaway the old 32 bit system andadopt a new 64 bit system. That willgive us 18,446,744,073,709,551,616possible combinations. I don’t evenknow how to say that number butwe can rest assured it is very, verybig. This 64 bit system will be calledIP 5 as apposed to the current 32bit system called IP 4, which hasbeen in use since 1981. There are
mutterings about going straight tothe, 128 bit, IP 6 system whichwould create enough IP addressesfor every person on earth to ownbillions of internet devices andwould truly solve the problem onceand for all.So, what’s to worry about? If thenew system is adopted, which intruth it has to be, we are all goingto need to upgrade our kit. Youmight want to take this into accountif you are presently looking for anew computer. Get somethingbigger than a 32bit IP4. You will beneeding a 128bit IP 6 system. If you want to know more about thisdilemma then you are advised tovisit ....www.youtube.com/numberphile
which is where I heard the doomfultale.Numberphile is a great YouTubechannel. It ’s a relatively newchannel run by some boffins atNottingham University. The missionof these guys is to drop the veil ofmystery on Mathematics andcomplicated numbers. Big ones,
enigmatic ones, fun ones (believeit or not) and mysterious ones.In very lay-manny terms and indocumentary style all the mysteriesof the universe of numbers andmaths are dispelled, explained andhopefully understood.I wouldn’t describe their work as a‘study aid’ but it is entertaining andinformative. Of the many subjectscovered are such enigmas as ‘thenumber of the beast 666’ and whatthat is really all about. It covers Piand its beautiful ratios andsignificance. The legendary 23enigma, perfect numbers and whatthey are all about, magic squares,145 and why it causes melancholyand of course the famous TruncatedIcosahedron, better known to mostof us as the Football AssociationBall. Something I am hoping Spainwill put to very good use in thewhat, to you, will probably be thepast. If any of you find something fun orinteresting out there on the webpass it on to El Navegador [email protected].
holidays. Councillor for Tourismand Trade, Rafael Rodríguez fromthe IU, has made a presentation ofhis summer campaign to promoteAndalucía. He said that if allresidents in Andalucía stayed herefor the summer they would make asubstantial contribution tosustaining the regional economyduring the crisis.♣The Ministry for Health is pro-posing to remove 456 medicationsfrom public financing as part of thecuts in the health service. Theobjective being to save 440 millioneuros on medicines used to treat‘lesser symptoms’. The plan is thatdoctors can prescribe what theywish, but if it is on the excluded listthe patient will have to pay for theentire cost of the medicine.♣And finally … At the time ofgoing to press the Valencia firewhich started on Thursday 28th Junewas advancing out of control inValencia and Castellón and nearly2000 people had been evacuatedfrom their homes. Investigationscontinue into how the blaze startedbut the latest theory is thatnegligence in the installation of solarpanels to a private home could be toblame. The two operators of thecompany have been arrested andcharged with the crime of causingdamage against the environmentthrough negligence and togetherwith their employer they face hugepenalties. In a separate incident at Prats de Rei
in Barcelona, firemen have managedto control a fire which started onFriday 29th and which has burnt 909hectares.There was a fire at the La Mata areaof Mojácar on Saturday 30th June, reasonably quickly extinguished Ipresume as no major news about itsince, but it does lend itself as awarning to be extra careful andvigilant – people have been seenthrowing their cigarette buts out ofthe car window even now! Glass andcans are just as bad as they can easilyignite the tinder dry grasslandcaused by these extreme hottemperatures. Bear in mind that ifyou are ever found responsible forcausing a bush fire, eveninadvertently, you can be held liablefor consequential damages under thelatest Spanish anti-fire laws.

Local author and ex-Television Producer TonyRedston has just published his debut novel.Tony, a long-time hispanophile, first came tothe area in 1999 and was totally captivated.Although still deeply involved in a busy careerproducing high quality drama for BBCTelevision, Tony knew the time wasapproaching to wind down and do somethingcompletely different, so he bought a plot ofland near Sorbas and began building a house there. The usual struggle toobtain planning permission took two years and two years more of playing thetraditional Spanish game of ‘Prod-the-Builder’ saw the project reach a stagewhere he could move in. Thanks to internet technology he was able begin anew life developing scripts in the sunshine, rather than fighting the weatheron location in the UK.Good fortune smiled once again when he met long-time resident of theMojácar area Debbie Green, known to many new-comers to Spain throughher Gestoria business Q&A Services. But despite the relaxing charms of thesea, the tapas bars, the golf courses and taxi-driving teenagers there seemedto be something missing and eventually itchy fingertips led him back to thekeyboard to try to satisfy his creative urges. The upshot of this is ‘PICK ANUMBER’ - a conspiracy-theory thriller to rival the mastery of RobertLudlum and Dan Brown.A massive win on the Euro lottery brings Alex Burgess the kind of financialgood fortune we might all wish for. Having made suitable provision for thefuture of his loved ones he resolves to make philanthropic use of the
remainder but soon finds his good intentions draw him into a viciouslycynical conspiracy to cause armed conflict around the globe. Convinced thateffete and ineffective Western Governments are hamstrung and unable totackle the threat of the world falling under Sharia Law, a secret alliancebetween senior radical Christians is devoting itself to aggressively combatingthe spread of Islam - they intend to provoke a backlash among the Christianworld which will unleash the Final CrusadeWhat begins as one man’s personal journey to rediscover himself and hisvalues, unfolds to become a fast paced action-packed drama of someonefighting not just for his own life and those of his family but also for the livesof millions of innocent people.A chillingly convincing debut novel which begins inthe peaceful Andalucian sunshine then twists andturns across Europe and the Middle East as theconspiracy reveals itself. Falling somewhere in thevoid between the politico-religious themes of RobertLudlum and Dan Brown, with the grit of Lee Child,PICK A NUMBER will leave you wondering when -not if - this is going to happen.‘PICK A NUMBER’ is available as an e-book in allformats of e-reader from www-tonyredston.com or forKindle only direct from Amazon Kindle Books (£1.91)and to order in print (£7.99 + p&p) also fromwww.tonyredston.com. If you want your own signed copy, Tony will beattending book-signing events at various venues around the area so watch outfor posters advertising where and when.

Sun Smart InformationSun Protection Advice ...
by Denise - Pampered What is SPF? … SPF stands
for Sun Protection Factor. Ifyour skin would burn in 10minutes in the afternoon sunwithout protection then usinga "broad spectrum" sun screenwith an SPF 15 will give you 150minutes (2½ hours) ofprotection before burning. Thehigher the protection thelonger you can stay in the sun. Access to shade is important asis drinking plenty of water to avoid dehydration. An SPF15 willgive you 93% sun protection, an SPF30 will give you 96% sunprotection. No sunscreen, no matter how high the factor canprovide 100% protection.
Sun screen should be applied 30 minutes before exposureand it is crucial that you re-apply Sun Screen generously andregularly as it only works if you use enough - about every 2hours or more often if you are sweating, getting wet or in awindy climate. As a guide for an average person, around 2teaspoons of sun screen for arms, head and neck and 2tablespoons for the rest of the exposed areas. Don't be temptedto sunbathe longer than your SPF Sun Screen allows as re-application does not prevent burning or skin damage. No

sunscreen, whether Factor 15 or 50 will give you the protectionit claims unless you apply it properly. Some sunscreens claim toprovide effective protection after just one application but weknow that re-applying regularly is very important. Plus you aremore likely to get even coverage and avoid missing bits thatmay then get sunburnt.
Always protect your lips with a special Lip Balm. Also othersensitive parts of the body require special consideration if youlike to sunbathe topless and don't forget to protect your eyesfrom the UV rays to avoid cataracts, retinal damage and maculardegeneration. Buy wraparound sunglasses that block 99 to 100percent of UVA & UVB radiation. Colour or darkness of lensesis not significant to the protection received. Contact lenswearers can now buy contact lens with UV protection.
Children under the age of six months should not be exposedto the sun, since their skin is highly sensitive to the chemicalingredients in sunscreen as well as to the sun’s rays. Shade andprotective clothing are the best ways to protect infants fromthe sun.
Stay safe in the sun - prevent premature ageing and/or skincancer … burn your burgers, not your body.

A group of fourth year students from the Segovia MilitaryAcademy were in Mojácar and Turre between the 18th and29th June. The students, (ranked into 3 groups, namely
lower intermediate, intermediate, or upper intermediate) were here onan intensive immersion course in English. They attended classes in themorning followed by sports activities in the afternoons, and werehosted by volunteer "homestay" families in the two towns. They also went on cultural excursions, for instance to Cabo de Gataand to the old gold mines at Rodalquilar. (These now abandoned mineswere established and operated by a British company at the start of thelast century, and reverted to Spanish control during the 1950s.)Another cultural event was a "Scottish night", courtesy of Eric andLainey Harvey, complete with bagpipes thanks to David Weir.Their teacher was Andrew Mortimer, who was also the event organiser, helped by Jean Macpherson and Myles Morris. The organisers wouldlike to give heartfelt thanks to the town halls of Mojácar and Turre fortheir splendid cooperation and assistance. They give thanks also to theteachers Wendy Gretton, Patrick and Jill Bennett, Simon Taylor andPam Moore and express their deep gratitude to the many families whoplayed hosts to the students.A special visit to the academy in Segovia is being planned forSeptember, and anyone interested in joining the visit is invited tocontact Andy by e-mail on [email protected]

On their penultimate day there was a beach barbecue for the students, their teachers and their hosts. Local residents Mark Sinclair and SimonTaylor set up two portable barbecues and sweated over the hot coalson a sweltering day that saw shade temperatures peak at 36 degrees.A prize-giving ceremony was held in the Turre "multiusos" building atmidday on the 29th June, just before the students returned to Segovia.Every student to whom I spoke had enjoyed the course and hoped toreturn next year, just before qualifying as an officer.

Free banking in Spain appears to
be coming to an end after banks
were allowed to very quietly slap a
number of charges on account
holders. Cajamar, for example, will
now charge anyone between the
ages of 25 and 65 who doesn’t
deposit 600€ a month a charge of
60€ a year per current account, and
all debit / credit card charges
seemed to have been hiked
upwards. Double check your
accounts for hidden charges!
 Car boot sales continue as
normal throughout the summer up
at Camping Los Gallardos. 3€ for a
stall (charity stalls go free). Every
Sunday morning from 9am.
 Don’t forget that Miraflores
offers diners free use of their salt
water swimming pool, meaning
that for as little as 5€ p,p, you can
spend all day relaxing under the
sun eating great food!
 Sunday Lunches at Miraflores
continue to be extremely popular,
and during the summer they will
continue to showcase local artists
during Sunday Lunches. For
example, this month Tom Lee is
playing lunchtime on the 22nd, and
Kris Kelly is playing on the 29th.
Come along and enjoy it!
 Confusion reigns for EU citizens
trying to get their NIE numbers at
the moment. Basically, Madrid has
ordered that all foreigners coming
to live in Spain must prove that
they are able to support themselves,
but then left it up to the regions of
Spain to define “support
themselves”. Seville, responsible
for Andalucia, has not clarified this,
meaning that the National Police
are unable to issue NIE numbers to
EU citizens until someone pulls
their finger out and issues a
directive. It’s been two months
now, and the foreigners office in
Almeria continues to refuse to issue
appointments due to the huge
backlog.
 John the fiddler, the amazing
Benidorm fiddle act, is back at
Miraflores on the 21st, in a
fantastic evening act outside. There
will be a great BBQ, which rumour
has it will cost from just 6€ (wow!)
and if you didn’t see him last time
he was here you missed a treat.
Reservations are necessary as last
time it was a sold out house, so get
booking your seat now.
 Living in Turre? Arturo has
called an unofficial referendum of
all citizens of Turre to select the
“seven wonders of Turre”. Pop
along to the Guadalinfo office
during business hours until the end
of the month to vote. The list
includes the “Moorish bridge”,
Los Moralicos, several spots along
the Rio Aguas, and several other
spots that are pleasing to the eye.
 The ultimate rock show with
Elvis Presley himself (or the next
best thing - he won the 2010 Elvis
European Championships) will be
on Sunday 8th of July up at
Miraflores! Elvis and his guitar
are coming over from the UK
specially for the event, along with
his partner “Shakin Stevens” so
don’t delay and get booking quick.
There’s also a fancy dress
competition, come along dressed
in your best 60’s Jive gear to win
prizes! 679970399 for bookings.
 If you want more information
on these events, call Miraflores on

tickets, check out their website

or befriend them on Facebook.

Has not been seen with children.Secure boundary recommended as a good jumper -though always came back. Travels well in the carthough may bark at other dogs through the window.Walks well on lead and was friendly when met otherdogs out walking. He may take objects and chew themso will need management in this area. Needs regular
exercise. Not anxious when left at home. Very people friendly and likes attention. Is used to sleeping in the house. Was observed to be clean in the house thoughstarted scent marking as he got older. Enjoys playing in the garden.

TABERNA - This tall greyhound is beautifuland statuesque. A lovely dog, she is easy forher caretakers to handle and manage. Whilstfriendly with people she can be dominantwith other dogs; at mealtimes she may try tokeep other dogs away from their food, oreven snap at them. Therefore we suggest ifshe is homed with other dogs that she is fedseparately.
DOG OF THE MONTHLOLO is a small dog, four years old and verypeople-friendly. He wants, and asks, for atten-tion and he may bark and jump up onto your lapto get it. He likes to cuddle and is a bit needyfor your affection. Lolo is kennelled with twoyoung male puppies. He gets along with thembut may get a little jealous when they getattention. Lolo tries to rush out of doors as hedoes not want to be closed in but wants to staywith you. He walks well on the leash and reallyenjoys outings. No food aggression or guardinghas been observed. He has not been observed to play with toys as yet. He hasbeen observed to scent mark at times. Note: It is probably best if he is nothomed with young children.
MISTRAL - is friendly with people and likes to go forwalks. She is playful and tolerant of her dominantand playful kennelmate (that she was abandonedwith). Nice dog. Mistral has shown herself to notalways be sociable with other females and somemales.

You Can Not Be Serious By The Other Half
On the patriotism scale I reckon that I am abouthalfway up. I do not, and never will, possess apair of Union Flag underpants, yet I did have apair of Union Flag socks, I think bought aboutthe time of the Silver Jubilee, worn, worn out,and never replaced.I pay attention when the National Anthem isplayed, and I know the words to the first verse, yet while it is played I do not rise to my feet andstand to attention, I remain seated on the sofa.Yet somehow the Diamond Jubilee, and thetelevision coverage thereof, gripped me andheld me captive for the whole weekend.I was prepared to dip in and out of it as and whenthe fancy took me, but no, I was hooked fromthe moment when those myriad of manuallypowered, or as they used to call them in the olddays, rowing boats first glided across the screen. The celebrations had it all from the Queen’shorses in a show all of their own to the Queen’sbarge and the magnificent Gloriana, to a concertfor the masses (and there were masses) to theprocession, the flypast and the religious service.Everything that represents that which we do wellwas on show. And we do do it well. We are masters of the artof grandiose public displays. I honestly believethat we do it better than any other nation. TheRussians and the Chinese may be able toproduce thousands of identical marchingsoldiers, all performing with frighteningprecision of step and formation, but do theyhave the horses which swish their tails and tosstheir heads? Do they have riders clad in theshiniest of cuirasses and the most colourful ofdress uniforms who maintain calm and controleven when said horses get a bit skittish? No,they have identically dressed robots, drilled toobedience. We have identically dressed humans, who are using their horses and their uniformsto perform an act of appreciation and respectfor our very Britishness, and for the person whorepresents that as our Queen. And that brings me on to the subject of theQueen. I challenge any other 86 year old toundertake the schedule that she had and remainso constant. Not once did she yawn. Not oncedid she seem bored. Not once did she falter, even when the absence of her husband meantthat the weight of the whole performance fellsolely on her shoulders – no, she kept calm andcarried on.We should be proud of her, and of our history, and chequered though some of it may be, byand large we have a lot to be proud about. Letus appreciate it, not with Union Flag underpants, but with the dignity that befits our great nation.

I fished with ‘Orca Steve’ and ‘BlisterSteve’ and everything looked goodfor a great day’s fishing. There waslittle wind or swell, no current andfish jumping as we left the harbouralthough they didn’t want to knowany of our lures. That was, a deepdiving rapala, a long tailed rubbermuppet and a Devon minnow or thefeathers they were following up.Steve also tried the Spanish methodof a weight followed by 50 feet ofline and a set of feathers. Ok but itmeans you have to hand line thetrace in after you pick up the weight. It works for the Spanish but it’s notfor me unless I see it catching fishbetter than I can, which at themoment is also negligible. We trolled for 2½ hours without atake and we frustratingly saw loadsof fish jumping around our lures. Wealso saw lots of sunfish even thoughthe wind had got up by then and thesea had become choppy. I did hook abig sunfish twice I believe, weighingabout 40lbs but lost it both times. We struggled to catch any fish on thebottom too that day.
Talking of fish jumping, about 1.2 kmin front of the Beachcomber lastWednesday night there were seagullsdiving in and others picking uppresumably fish from the surface ofthe water and big silver predatorsjumping out of the water, I’mguessing barracudas, bluefish orpalometes.

A few weeks ago I was sitting on ‘OrcaSteve’s’ boat drowning prawns whenI heard a voice say.'Pick me up.'I looked around and couldn't see any-one other than my mates who werelooking the other way.I thought I was dreaming when I heardthe voice say again, 'Pick me up.'I looked in the water and there, float-ing on the top, was a baby turtle.I said, 'Are you talking to me?'The turtle said, 'Yes, I'm talking toyou.' Pick me up, then kiss me; and I'llturn into the most beautiful womanyou have ever seen.I'll make sure that your fishing friends,‘Orca Steve’, ‘Blister Steve’ and ‘ChefJeremy’ are envious and jealous, be-cause I will be your girlfriend!'I looked at the turtle for a short time, reached over, picked it up carefullyand placed it in my shirt pocket. The turtle said, 'What, are you nuts?Didn't you hear what I said?' I said,'Kiss me, and I will be your beautiful
girlfriend.'I opened my pocket, looked at theturtle and said, 'Nah. At my age, I'drather have a talking turtle.'‘With age comes wisdom’
