Th e realities of spring runoff could jilt cyclists who have a need for speed.
High water levels have dramatically al-tered the terrain of the Kootenay Columbia Trails Society (KCTS) and the society has asked the commu-nity to practice safety while using the trails this season.
Trails in the area have been signifi -cantly altered by the heavy spring runoff , creating all sorts of new risks for outdoor enthusiasts, said Isaac Saban, president of KCTS.
“I think the biggest concern is for moun-tain bikers traveling down at high speed, even if there’s a cer-tain speed that they’re used to traveling at, they may not have been on the trails this year,” explained Sa-ban.
“You could come up to a trail very quickly and it will be far rougher or have more debris than there used to be.”
Saban went on to explain that it’s impor-tant to learn about the terrain before rushing back into extreme sports this season, at least until the trails
have been repaired.“Th ey’ve all been
aff ected to some de-gree, but only fi ve or six were really heav-ily impacted,” he said. “I would hope by the end of the trail season, we will have most of them rebuilt and back in order, but it could be mid-September by the time we get to all of the trails.”
Water is part of the issue, but it also comes down to crew
availability. Th e KCTS has a
crew of four people who are out working on repairing the trails everyday. Th e trails manager, Stewart Spooner, will spend some time on the ground as well.
“Th ey’ll be out there with hand tools doing their best to re-pair the tread,” Saban explained. “Hopefully, we can improve some of the drainage issues so similar problems won’t occur in the fu-
ture.”Th e crew is cur-
rently working on the north end of the Seven Summits trail and will repair Crown Point, near the south side of Trail Creek, and Raven’s Rock, a trail leading from the hos-pital to Miral Hieghts, when the water lev-els decrease. Routine maintenance will also take place throughout the course of the sea-son.
Th e society main-tains 145 kilome-tres of trails for non-motorized use around the area from Fruitvale, Montrose, throughout Trail and into Warfi eld and Rossland.
In the last year there were 120,000 trail us-ages, with $85,000 in funding from lo-cal government, and through membership money, donations and other fund rais-ing initiatives they have a budget of near-ly $100,000.
Th e society’s site now includes eleva-tion profi les of the trails, detailed topo-graphic maps in pdf form, uploaded pic-tures of trail features and a brief set of di-rections to get to the trail head.

Th e rapid rise of Castlegar’s Sculpture-Walk has been well documented, and deservedly so. Th e program, in just its year has shown expo-nential growth and its future could not look brighter.
“Sandsations” is a popular sidebar to the annual SculptureWalk and this year’s eff ort goes from Th ursday to Sunday, July 19-22 outside the Pioneer Arena at 925 Colum-bia Avenue.
Th ree West Koo-tenay artists are fea-tured year, all with more than enough talent to share.
Peter Vogelaar (Winlaw), and Nel-son-based sculptors Denis Kleine and John McKinnon will be the attractions this time around and you’re welcome to stop by and see how it’s done.
“We are so lucky to have the world-class talent of John, Peter and Denis right on our doorstep” says SculptureWalk Ex-ecutive Director Joy Barrett.
“It’s going to be an exciting process to see these creatures being formed, quite literally from the ground up!”
Th e creatures Joy mentions are Mythi-
cal Creatures – this year’s Sandsations theme. Th ey’ve cer-tainly come up with a fascinating, wide-open category for the 2012 eff ort.
Joy explained on July 13 that the fi rst day will be the install-ing of the sand in the forms, then the carv-ing will start and con-tinue until comple-tion on the Sunday.
“Th is event is a huge hit with fami-lies,” said Barrett, “as they watch the process of sculpting from an up-close perspective, with the kids learn-ing some tips for their own sand creations!”
Vogelaar, who took part in last year’s sand sculpting showcase, has something in mind although the name of it escaped

“I’ve got to work out a plan that works within how we stack the sand,” he said.
Th e Winlaw resi-dent says it’s been ten years since he fi rst sculpted sand, 20 since he fi rst sculpted snow.
“A friend said I should try sand so I went to work with her at Harrison Hotsprings,” the artist recalled.
“Th en I kind of got the bug. Th e following year I got invited to a contest in Ottawa, the highlight was a free train trip home be-cause Via Rail was the sponsor. Th at’s when I teamed up with
my teammate David Ducharme. Th at Sep-tember we actually won the world cham-pionship which was a real surprise for us, and everybody else, I think.”

A Medalta milk pitcher from Kaslo sold last week for $310 US.

Henry Giegerich was a merchant in Kaslo, Ainsworth, Th ree Forks, and Sandon.
In 1891, he came to Ainsworth from Montana and estab-lished a store at the corner of Wright and Sutton streets. Aft er fi re wiped out the town he rebuilt in the same spot. In the 1910s, J.B. Fletcher took over the busi-ness, but Giegerich’s name remained on the building at least
through 1926.Th e store still
stands, now convert-ed into a museum, open this summer Th ursdays through Mondays from 1 to 5:30 p.m.
Among the arti-facts on display are several brushes with
Giegerich’s name.In Kaslo, Giegerich
built 344 Front Street aft er the great fi re of 1894. For many years, it housed the Big G store of Byers, Gieg-erich, and Green. During World War II, it was a school for Japanese Canadians,
and of late it has been the White Goat Gal-lery.
A great photo ex-ists of Giegerich’s store on Reco Av-enue in Sandon, with a big sign advertising Giant Powder fuse caps and Goodwin candles.
A stop along the Kaslo and Slocan Railway was also named aft er him.
• Th ree glass plate negatives purported-ly from Greenwood and Midway sold for $20 to $21 US each.
One showed an old schoolhouse, which the seller admit-ted might have been from the Cawston area or somewhere in the South Okanagan. Another showed a smelter, presumably at Greenwood or Boundary Falls, with a denuded hillside in the foreground.
Th e third showed several wooden buildings. Th e seller said with a magni-fying glass, the sign “Midway restaurant”
was readable.Th e negatives
measured 8.5 x 6.5 inches.
• A nice bird’s-eye-view of Trail sold for $49 US.
It was mailed in 1912 to a Mrs. Dr. Roth of Battle Creek, Michigan. Th e mes-sage read: “Th is is the spot where I am having such a good time and a good rest. Hope little Lawrence and Herman are well. I don’t suppose I will know the baby when I get home. Miss K.”
A rareish postcard showing Trail’s Cen-tral School and city hall, mailed in 1912 by a T.N. Davis to a Miss Stockwell in Nelson, also went for $31 US.
Th e message not-ed: “Th is is a view of the new school built last year.”

Vancouver-based band Th e Washboard Union is currently touring the province and will be in Grand Forks this Friday, July 20 at Studio B.
Washboard Union vocalist and banjo player Chris Dun-combe described the seven-piece band’s music as strongly in-fl uenced by country.
“Th e Washboard Union is a lot of things. When we were growing up, we were exposed to so much really, really old country from my dad, Sons of the Pioneers to Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings and all that sort of stuff ,” Duncombe explained. “I think we’ve taken pieces from all of that and made it our own. Th ere are elements
of bluegrass in it and Americana. We were really in love with those songwriters who told stories and I think that’s what a lot of our music does now.”
Th e Washboard Union also has been infl uenced by a num-ber of other musical genres as well.
“We all grew up on punk rock and hip hop, we’re not that old in terms of our age,” he said. “It comes from a lot of diff erent sides. When you have a band of seven guys, it’s just sort of natural that there’re a lot of diff erent infl uences.”
Th e band released its self-titled debut in
late-June and Grand Forks is currently the lone Kootenay-Boundary stop on their summer tour and, while based on the coast, Duncombe is not unfamiliar with the Grand Forks area.
“Aaron (Grain, Chris’ brother) and I both grew up in Kel-owna, so I’ve fi shed in
the Grand Forks area and I’ve been around there as a kid,” ex-plained Duncombe, adding that he and has brother or the band haven’t played in Grand Forks be-fore.
“We’re thrilled to be able to come up and play Grand Forks,” he went on to say.

“We are looking to replace our current fi re engine truck by the end of 2013,” he explained.
“As a fi re depart-ment, when we pur-chase equipment we don’t purchase it
for where we are to-day, we purchase it for what we fi gure will happen 20 years down the road be-cause they last us 20-plus years.”

Area History
A Robson author is looking for stories,
photos, and family histories to help her write a comprehen-sive book on the Ar-row Lakes.
“Th e goal is a com-plete analysis of the Upper and Lower Ar-row Lakes and the nar-rows,” says Takaia Lar-sen, who has a $9,000 Columbia Basin Trust grant to complete the manuscript within 18
months.Th e book will de-
vote one chapter to each town that once dotted the lake.
“I’m still deciding what defi nes a town, but thinking wher-ever the SS Minto stopped,” she says. “If it had a store, it was a town.”
She fi gures 28 plac-es between Castlegar
and Arrowhead met that criteria before dam construction of the 1960s fl ooded many of them.
Her interest be-gan several years ago when she created an exhibit about Renata for the Kootenay Gal-lery. Despite growing up in the area and boating recreationally on the lake, she didn’t
realize how many communities there once were.
“Th e work on that one town made me realize there were so many,” she says.
Larsen adds while a number of books have already been pub-lished on such places as Burton, Edgewood, and Nakusp, her proj-ect will synthesize them all.
As a history instruc-tor at Selkirk College, she has longed for a single volume cover-ing the whole area.
“It’s so scattered and it’s hard for stu-dents to get a sense of the history of the whole region,” she says.
She’s particularly intrigued with Oat-scott, the Indian res-ervation opposite Burton that reverted to the Crown in 1953. “I’ve always wondered how that land came into the hands of the province because it was privately owned,” she says. “I’m hoping I can shed light on that.”
She’s also curious about Robson, where she lives on what used to be a large orchard.
She’s hoping to use previously untapped resources, and al-ready has some leads. Th e Castlegar Heri-tage Society has 50 pages of transcripts from interviews done 20 years ago, plus ma-terials that used to be housed at the Koote-nay Gallery.
Th e Arrow Lakes Historical Society has over 400 taped inter-views conducted by Milt Parent dating back to 1972. And lat-er this month Larsen will visit the BC Ar-chives to listen to oth-er audio interviews of Arrow Lakes residents from the Imbert Or-chard collection.
She’s also work-ing with Bruce Rohn, who was raised in Re-nata, and has many photos.
“It’s a huge project,” she says.

During the ex-change, team mem-bers will share per-sonal knowledge of their own country and vocations and experience the cus-toms, vocations and lifestyles of Bra-zil. Th e area called District D4510, de-scribed as an eco-logical paradise, is located in the mid-western region of Sao Paulo State. Metal industries, textile manufacturing and agriculture including coff ee, sugar can and oranges make this state the economic and industrial pow-erhouse of the Brazil-ian economy.
Th e purpose of the Group Study Ex-change is to promote international under-standing and good-will through person to person contact. While abroad, team members stay in Ro-tarians’ homes and have the opportunity to meet their profes-sional counterparts. Larsen applied un-successfully for proj-ect funding last year, but thanks to support from local heritage groups, was luckier this time around.
Th e grant only cov-ers the research phase. Aft erward she’ll have to fi nd a publisher.
Th e book is tenta-tively titled And Th en the Waters Rose: His-tories and Memories of the Arrow Lakes.
Once published,
Larsen plans to do a reading tour of the entire Columbia Ba-sin, noting East Koo-tenay residents were similarly displaced by hydro-electric devel-opment.
Larsen has two other titles under her belt. She turned her thesis on women working at Cominco during World War II into Sewing the Seeds: Women, Work, and Memory. She also co-authored a limited-edition history of the Castlegar pulp mill, Working Together: Celgar’s First 50 Years in the West Kootenay.

It was a pile of fun and a pile of sand for youngsters in Camp Cawabunga at Trail’s Gyro Park this week as they took turns bury-ing themselves in the cool, wet sand near the spray park. With two groups—six to eight year olds, and nine to 12 year olds—of a total of 16 kids the program’s three counselors were kept busy for the week. (Columbia Basin) – Columbia Basin Trust (CBT) and BC Housing have selected four proposals to move to the next phase of the Aff ordable Rental Housing initiative (ARHi):
• Salmo Supportive Housing Society, Salmo• Elk Valley Family Society, Fernie• Nelson CARES Society, Nelson• Revelstoke Community Housing Society, Revelstoke
Th e partners evaluated nine submissions against the criteria require-ments of the Request for Pre-qualifi cations (RFPQ) issued in March.
Th e four successful proponents will be sent an invitational Request for Proposals (RFP) to develop a full response, including a complete business case, for their project.
At this time, they may also be eligible to receive support from BC Housing to engage a consultant to assist in developing their response to the RFP; however, fi nal granting decisions under the ARHi will not be made until the next phase of the RFP process.
Th e deadline for the RFP will be set for fall 2012, and CBT and BC Housing will evaluate the proposals to determine which projects will receive grant funding under the ARHi before the end of the year.
Communities, including proponents unsuccessful in this phase, will have an opportunity to respond to a second call for proposals in the spring of 2013.

CBT is contributing $5 million toward this three-year, $10-million initiative that is being delivered in partnership with BC Housing to sup-port new aff ordable rental housing projects in communities across the Columbia Basin. Learn more about the program here.

Rossland briefsAft er six months on
the energy diet, Ross-land has cut back on its energy use by more than 2,220 gigajoules of natural gas and 1,478,000 kilowatt hours of electricity. It was done through energy effi cient reno-vations to existing homes and small busi-nesses.
Th e diet took shape last year when the Sustainability Com-
mission noted the av-erage Rossland home, consumed 36 per cent more electricity than other homes across the province. Th ey ap-proached FortisBC, their electricity and natural gas provider, to see if help was avail-able.
Old Glory hikeFor the eighth year
in a row, the Friends of the Rossland Range will head up to
Old Glory Peak this month. Th e hike is the fi rst of two such hikes the society does this summer, and everyone is welcome to come along. Th e dates are July 28 and Aug. 25. Th e hike takes about 5-8 hours total and takes you to the top of the highest peak in the Rossland Range. Th e hike begins at 9 a.m., both days at the Old Glory trailhead on Highway 3B.

As complementary currencies sprout up all over the world, Nelson becomes the newest community to make its own money.
Columbia Commu-
nity Dollars, a com-munity initiative two years in the making, represents a growing trend of communities fi nding their own so-lutions to ailing econ-omies.
“Creating com-munity currencies is perfectly legal,” said Michael Sheely, coor-dinator for the com-munity dollars. “Prob-ably because it seems too good to be true is why most commu-nities haven’t taken this step. However, this trend is changing fast”.

currencies have been shown to create resil-ient local economies and build community interdependence, re-ducing the eff ects of national and global recessions.
“We’ve taken the ex-
periences from Barter Bucks, Nelson’s previ-ous currency and cus-tomized a proven sys-tem used around the world to implement in our region,” said Brad-ley Roulston, Certifi ed Financial Planner and key player in the Nel-son’s movement to make local money.
“Th e vast majority of the money we use is created when we take a loan from a bank,” explained Sheely. “Th e bank creates the money we borrow, but not the interest they charge. Th at creates an inherent shortage
in the money supply. We compete for the always scarce resource of money. Bankrupt-cies and economic re-cessions are an inevi-table consequence of this system.
”Nelson’s new mon-
ey is diff erent. We print the money and give it to non-prof-its and community groups that help make Nelson a better place,” said Sheely. “Th e busi-nesses that have agreed to accept the currency help secure the value of the currency, so we let them decide which groups we give it to.
“Th en people who want to support those groups can buy it off them. Rather than making donations people trade curren-cies so they don’t lose spending power. And it encourages them
to support local busi-nesses because that’s where they can spend it.”
“Th e banks are lucky because the fed-eral government re-quires us to pay taxes with the money banks
create,” said Roulston. “Th at ensures the money’s value. Start-ing a new currency requires a lot of edu-cation to build accep-tance. Especially since people have spent their entire lives be-lieving that only one model can exist”.

Sculpture TalkDaniel Kloc
‘Chieft ain’ (bronze)
Last year, fi rst time Sculpture-walk entrant Daniel Kloc was probably the most surprised per-son in the room when his brood-ing bronze ‘ Raven’ was chosen as the overall winner in the Artistic Merit category. He shouldn’t have been. Th e judges recognized both his talent and the aesthetic and artistic qualities of the piece. While the $3000 top prize that accompanied the distinction was welcome, Kloc feels the support and respect of his fellow artists is as important as the monetary aspect.“Naturally, everyone who is cho-sen to display hopes to be singled out in exhibitions like this one,” says Kloc. “Th e sculptures were fantastic and every one of the warranted serious consideration, so I was pleased to be honoured with this level of award.”Th at was last year of course. Once again Kloc has submitted a piece which will surely merit consid-eration. ‘Chieft ain’ is another bronze that draws on Kloc’s love of history and nature. It also in-corporates classical infl uences from medieval European fi gura-tive work as studied by the artist during travels in and around the Czech Republic exploring his family roots.Kloc has captured the weather-beaten, world-weary counte-nance of one of the original peoples’ leaders in brilliant de-tail. Th e strong nose, wary eyes and pursed lips are expressive, the paint on his face adds to it. He wears a tunic/breastplate and full ceremonial regalia – a bear claw necklace at his throat - as befi ts his exalted status. Th ere is acquired knowledge, pride and wisdom along with a hint of re-signed acceptance etched in the deep lines of his face. ‘Chieft ain’ portrays a powerful fi gure in
marvellous detail; true to life in form and overfl owing with life learned and lived in soul and spirit.“My inspiration comes from the world of nature, primitive cultures and old world Europe mainly,” says Kloc. “I have tried to incorporate aspects of all three in this year’s entry. With ‘Chieft ain’ the fi rst two are fairly apparent, inherently connected by the subject alone. In the facial detail there might be touches of the third, I’ll leave that to the viewer to decide.”
Like many other local artists ap-pearing this year, Kloc is a gradu-ate of the Kootenay School of the Arts program. He then spent a number of years working at Pyra-mid Bronzeworks in Kelowna to increase his understanding and knowledge of bronze sculpting.“Between studies, work expe-rience gained at Pyramid and travels abroad, I’ve learned a lot. Th e satisfaction in creating something beautiful and lasting is powerful.” As is Kloc’s subject, and fi nished result.
