Faringdon Business Breakfast ClubJune’s meeting took place in The Terrace Suite as our

usual room at the Sudbury House Hotel is currently undergoingrefurbishment. Nevertheless, the breakfast was still excellent asmembers sat down to eat at 8am.Stephen Quirk kicked off the 60 introductions as he had boughta prop - a yard stick! Our resident poet, Paul Brame, wasn’t inattendance so Jonathan Russell stepped in and wrote onequickly on the back of a napkin whilst the other membersintroduced themselves. This month our guest speaker was Mary Thomas of ConciseTraining who gave a presentation on ‘What to Say on SocialMedia’.Social media has become an integral part of business marketingand Mary began by giving an overview of the various platformsavailable - Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, blogging andnewsletters amongst others.Mary then highlighted the key areas that create an effectivesocial media strategy. These include:Planning of content - what type of content to use (includingwhat not to use), when and where to publish it.Aims of content - engage your audience, showcase yourproducts/services, develop relationships.Reflect your brand - promote events, ask questions and opinions.Mary went on to talk about the frequency of posting content tothe various social media platforms. She typically recommendedblogging once a week, tweeting 5 times a day and updating yourFacebook page 2-3 times a day. Finally, Mary gave a few examples of how bigger businessesutilise social media. The Breakfast Club next meets at 7.30am on 7th July whenSarah Benson will talk about the Faringdon Rotary Club. So far this year we’ve put up with floods and high windsand last month we had lightning strikes, but hopefully weare now in for a great summer and the economic outlookcontinues to look sunny. “Independent’s Day” will soon beupon us. The plan is to hold a market on Saturday 5 July to helppromote independent businesses in the town and to celebrateour very own independent shops. Look out for posters aroundtown and please do pop down to remind yourself what ourtown centre has to offer and maybe make a few newdiscoveries. If this event is a success, it is hoped that there willbe further events to demonstrate that our historic town centrecontinues to be the vibrant hub of our community. TheFaringdon Chamber of Commerce is continuing to work on thewider economic vitality of the town. Please get in touch if youwant to make your views know as our economic developmentstrategy enters its next stage. Whilst the consultation for ourown Neighbourhood Plan is now closed, we are using ourexperiences in that process to help our neighbours in Lechladewith their own Neighbourhood Plan. Following on from May’s

“summit” on the loyalty card, we have considered the feedbackfrom the surveys that were undertaken leading up to thatmeeting and are looking forward to hearing about someexciting new ideas to refresh and re-launch the scheme andthese will be presented in a future meeting. By the time youread this Super fast broadband will finally be a reality inFaringdon town centre. There continues to be a few grumblesabout the Vodafone signal which still seems to be poor in thetown. Is anyone else having problems? Please let yourChamber of Commerce know and [email protected]

1000Lets Talk about Whisky

Fran ThomasArkwrights Whisky and Wines

Our final port of call on Islay is the newest distillery on theisland – Kilchoman, where spirit first flowed in 2005. Whilstnot situated right next to the sea like the other Islaydistilleries, it’s only a stone’s throw to Machir Bay where theAtlantic Ocean pounds the beautiful sandy beach. Setamongst fields and utilising old agricultural buildings, it’s atrue farm size distillery and the intention is that as much ofthe production as possible, from barley to bottle, originatesin Islay.Currently the distillery grows around 30% of the barley it usesand has it’s own maltings (with one of the most compactkilns and pagodas I’ve ever seen), warehouses and bottlingline. Walking into the production area, with its whitewashed walls and steel washbacks, is very reminiscent ofentering a milking parlour and indeed, it is not much biggerthan the old parlours used to be. There are two small stills, with the spirit still having a boil bowl that helps to create alighter style of spirit which, combined with a peating level ofaround 40 ppm, results in a well balanced smoky, fruity, sweet and savoury dram with plenty of complexity.Definitely an Islay malt but with a personality all of its own.The output of the distillery is around 140,000 litres of alcohola year. 80% of the spirit goes into ex-bourbon casks formaturation and around 20% into ex-sherry casks. The coreexpression, Machir Bay, was first released in 2012 and is ablend of whisky from both types of maturation. A newbottling will be released regularly so it’s development can beexperienced and core flavour characteristics include sweetpeat, seaweed, citrus and coastal saltiness. The Loch Gormbottling is, again, relatively new and will be re-released atintervals so that people can follow its progression. 100%ex-sherry cask matured, it’s a luscious dram that has richfruits and spices, smoky peat and vanilla sweetness. The 100% Islay does what it says on the tin as every elementof its production is carried out at Kilchoman. In otherexpressions barley of two different peating levels is mixedtogether – Kilchoman’s own at around 25 ppm and somefrom Port Ellen maltings at around 50 ppm. However, the100% Islay uses only barley grown and malted at Kilchomanand the resulting spirit is light in style with the citrus/lemonnotes shining through along with gentle smoke. Finally, Kilchoman also release a variety of vintageexpressions matured in bourbon cask plus some single caskbottling's that are cask strength and come from eithersherry or bourbon cask. This small distillery produces malts that I can thoroughlyrecommend, and it certainly holds its own with the big boysof Islay – a great place to finish our tour of the island.

| The Advertiser | page 7 | Talk to the Vet!Hello again and welcome to further ramblings as the Summer marches on.I have received disturbing news from a colleague in Galicia Spain, that the non-steroidal analgesic, anti-inflammatory drug, diclofenac, has been licensed forveterinary use in cattle and pigs in Spain and Italy. It is medically licensed, with alsoa good number of proven side-effects in people. All this is just a few years afteroverwhelmingly convincing evidence regarding the wiping-out of some 99% ofvulture populations in India, Pakistan, Nepal and Bangladesh was presented to thegovernments of those countries. The drug was then BANNED in those countries. The same can and will happen here in Europe, with eagles also being killed by acuterenal failure just as the Eurasian vultures (Griffons, Bearded, Egyptian andCinereous) in particular will be. Misuse of the drug remains possible. These vultures are protected by EU law and considerable funding has gone into theconservation of these species. I’m sure most of us will have seen documentaries ofthe Bearded Vulture dropping bones and other food sources to break them open.Spain supports over 95% of Europe’s vulture population. The vultures havebenefited from a special relationship with Spanish farmers by efficiently disposingof fallen (dead) stock at an annual saving of between 1 and 1.5 million Euros.

The farmers in Walesaffected by the bad winter two years ago will know the cost ofdisposal of hill sheep, cattle and ponies. The irony is, there ARE perfectly good, licensed drug alternatives, confirmed by my colleague in Spain. The British Veterinary Zoological Society considers it an obligationto preserve the European vultures under the EU Birds Directive, aswill the RSPB and others, also to demonstrate to thosegovernments already banning the veterinary use of this drug, thatthe EU does take the same view, in order to protect its own EUbirds. So the campaign of the month, is to PLEASE, help all concernedvets, conservationists and members of the public to force the fastwithdrawal of this unnecessary drug from the whole of the EU.Governments must get off the fence and help us!

Sign this petition http://tinyurl.com/kzqxd96For more information http://www.4vultures.org/our-work/campaigning-to-ban-diclofenac-in-europe/ THANK YOU!

A meeting is due focusing on what is called “over-vaccination” and the correct feeding of dogs for optimum health. While Iwholehearted agree that diet and the amount fed causes me great concerns when not given correctly for breed, medicalconditions and lifestyle, the vaccination issue needs clarification. All practices like mine will offer vaccination status blood tests on request, internally if the “bed side” test is accurate enough forsuch an important decision, or via a quality controlled external laboratory. The Leptospirosis status blood test is deemedunreliable; all the vaccine manufacturers appear to recommend annual vaccination for Leptospirosis and we are obliged to heedthis recommendation unless a client wants to opt out, against best advice. The other main diseases, Distemper, Viral Hepatitisand Parvovirus do have a much more reliable test and this can be very easily arranged, prior to any booster vaccination. Whenwe ask our external laboratory to carry out DNA tests on faecal samples, “wild” Parvovirus is usually detected. Fine tuningvaccination boosters after the correct three-part, one year, primary course, does appear very sensible in the light of worldexpert re-vaccination advice and should be the way forward, provided that Leptospiravaccination is carried out annually. Leptospirosis is a zoonotic (animal to man) bacterialdisease that seems to be on the increase, particularly as a zoonosis showing recent increasesin medical cases. During this past winter’s flooding, one of the risks was the increased chancesfor pets to pick up this bacterium, as opposed to infection from rodents, foxes, hedgehogsand other dogs. Working dogs, rural dogs and dogs having access to watercourses are farmore at risk, whether in town or country. It is essential to follow the manufacturer recommendations in order to prevent YOUR dogpresenting to your veterinary practice with acute renal failure, liver disease, excess thirst andurination, blood in the urine, pneumonia, bleeding into the chest, respiration rate andcharacter changes (including coughing), pyrexia or fever, blood clotting failures, eye diseaseand abortion in pregnant animals. If your pets survive, they may well have chronic, life-longkidney, liver and lung disease. Let alone the risk of giving owners the disease. This is animalwelfare in real terms.New strains of vaccine have been developed as the disease is monitored by scientists in wildanimal populations and from collated case histories. Please discuss vaccination with your veterinary practice, warts and all – it has a big part to playin keeping your dog, cat and rabbit healthy and safe.Thank you for your company.

Finding FaultPeter Sichel, a German American wine merchant, whoseclaim to fame was the international success of the brand(drum roll….) BLUE NUN, is quoted as saying, ‘Wine is animmediate phase between sweet grape juice and vinegar, andit is up to the winemaker to ensure that is a stable phase.’To elaborate, this intermediate phase (what we call wine)should be an expression of the grape and the site and/orregion in which it is grown. Any fault in the wine will damagethis expression. Faults in wine are avoidable and are oftenthe result of poor decisions in the winery.A few faults you may have (or hopefully not!) have found inwine and their cause:Oxidation – caused by excessive exposure to oxygen. Thewine has premature browning in colour, loss of fresh, fruityaromas and a distinctive ‘bruised apple’ aroma on the nose. This can also be detected in wines that have been left openfor some time. During the wine making process, protectingthe wine from oxygen, prior to and during bottling and theuse of sulphur dioxide in the bottle prevents oxidation.Cork Taint – caused by mould spores in contaminated corks. This gives off a musty smell, often described as rotting applesor mouldy cellar. This dominates the wine and the fruitycharacter is destroyed. A preventative measure is to usealternative closures, such as synthetic cork or stelvinclosures (screw caps). This can vary according to the gradeof quality of the wine, tradition and reputable cork suppliers.Brettanomyces – a yeast responsible for spoilage, which canbe prevalent in oak aged wines. This induces a strong smellof ‘sweaty horses’ or ‘Elastoplast’. Again, this masks the clearexpression of the wine and makes it dry and hard on thepalate. It is present in all wineries, so control is paramount.Steaming barrels, general cleanliness and hygiene are vital.Reduction – most commonly caused by hydrogen sulphide, which is given off by yeast that is ‘stressed’ during thefermentation process. The stress comes from a drying andreactivating process, which is imparted on the wine bothduring fermentation and when in contact with the lees(expired yeast cells) after fermentation. The impact is arotten egg aroma, or sulphur and the taste isn’t much better!Winemakers need to monitor the yeasts to ensure they donot become stressed! If hydrogen sulphide does develop, processes of aeration and copper fining can help remove thefault.Today, Blue Nun is often at the butt of wine quality jokes – ina derogative sense. However, at its peak in the 1980’s(along with cans of hair spray), annual sales in the USreached up to 1.25 million cases! So who is laughingloudest??

George Orwell – English RebelBy Robert CollsOxford University Press

In 'Last of England,' the penultimate chapter of this refreshingly vibrant and all round excellent new book, GeorgeOrwell – English Rebel, author Robert Colls writes: ''Orwell's best hope is a woman and his England begins to lookincreasingly feminine after 1940. Being inside a whale (and what a whale) is like being inside a womb.''To what extent the reader will emphatically agree or perhaps disagree with such a double-edged thought process

- is surely open to debate. For like many an Orwellianism (and there were many), there's no denying its translucent sentiment andquintessential complex clarification. What's more, it's just a tiny tip of a literary iceberg that readily brims with the ''crystal spirit''of Orwell's idiosyncratic writings and complicated, if not sanguine, personal life – a life delicately reflected upon throughout(''Their wedding menu was splendidly English: Roast Aylesbury Duckling and Sherry Cream Trifle. In 1938 they submittedphotographs to the British Consulate prior to their trip to Marrakech. He looks handsome and she looks pretty, both in an Englishfilm-star sort of way'').Indeed, from his early frustrating days at Eton to the eye-opening five years in Burma; from his overtly influential Wigan periodthrough to Barcelona and Catalonia; from the Luftwaffe filled skies of London during the Blitz to the twentieth century classic thatis Nineteen Eighty Four, these eight chapters make for mesmerising reading. They're dense yet compact, pivotal yet simultaneouslyobjective.Admittedly, I haven't read every book on Orwell – who has? But English Rebel is as much a stimulating read as it is inspiring.Although more importantly, it's acutely informative.According to Melvyn Bragg: ''Rob Colls has taken on the man's Englishness, his personality, warts and all, and the elusive notionthat he was a rebel in his own land.''I can't help but agree, as from the very first chapter 'Angry Old Etonian,' the author immediately leans towards said rebelliousnotion wherein he most adroitly writes: ''He loathed nationalism, but defined Englishness for a generation. He was an enemy ofthe right, but had little to say in favour of the left. He was no friend of the left, but tried to work within it. He was violently opposedto totalitarianism, but had little interest in political parties. He didn't write well about women but tried, in one novel at least, towrite about being a woman, and in his last novel he invested his best hope, such as it was, in one woman and almost all women. He did not trust intellectuals, but mixed with them, was one himself, and never tried to pretend otherwise, though sometimes heconveniently forgot the fact.''The final line here, does suggest that Colls isn't afraid to shoot from the hip so to speak, although one cannot help but commendthe ever so deft consideration of the above. As it's all true.George Orwell was, and to a certain degree, remains, all that which the author has written - and a whole lot more besides; which,in a round-a-bout sort of way, is re-confirmed a little later in 'Angry Old Etonian': ''Orwell was against all the major world systemsof his day, including nationalism and Catholicism. Apart from an early gut attraction to a sort of folk Marxism where 'the oppressedare always right and the oppressors are always wrong,' he did not believe in political ideologies either.''The latter is perhaps a little ironic, especially given that Orwell is still considered by many to be ''the most significant British politicalwriter of the twentieth century.'' In and of itself, this continues to be re-substantiated in countless ways. One of which is thesimple fact that he has an entire square named after him in Barcelona – a wonderful, yet inexorable/political/contentious hotspotin Catalonia/Spain if ever there was one.Replete with eighteen black and white plates in the middle of the book, these 235 pages are, to once again quote Bragg: ''full ofzesty prose, fine insights, and a freshness of interpretation which made it a pleasure to read. It's a major achievement and a majorwork on George Orwell.'' That, it most definitely is.To say George Orwell – English Rebel packs a mighty mean punch to the political solar plexus of both naïve distraction and myopicconformity, is a colossal understatement. Then again, as a publication, it is helped along its way, by the simple fact, that it's subjectbelieved that telling the truth was a revolutionary act.

The UK’s leading motor trademagazine has re-created two ofthe most iconic images from the1966 World Cup using car dealerswho share their name withmembers of England’striumphant team. From Bobby Moore to GeoffHurst, the winners are allrepresented by staff fromdealerships across the countrywho took part in thephotographs for Car DealerMagazine ahead of this year’sWorld Cup.A team from the award-winningtrade title borrowed a 1967 FordCortina Super from the FordHeritage Collection – the closestthey could get to a car from 1966

and travelled hundreds of miles in three days in their bid to track down someone to stand in for each of the 11 footballinglegends.Their journey, much like the England team’s in 1966, was fraught with drama, including a breakdown in the middle of London(the car, not the editorial team), but ultimately proved successful.Their snapper was briefed to take a picture of each dealer in the correct pose. Then, using Photoshop, each picture was cutout and pasted on to a background picture similar to the original team photo and the famous shot of captain Bobby Moorecarrying the trophy as he is held aloft by team-mates following the famous 4-2 victory over West Germany in the final. The edges of each picture were blended and blurred to make the final image as lifelike as possible. Shadows were then putin to add realism and depth to the picture, and lighting adjusted.James Batchelor, editor of Car Dealer, said: “Like most hare-brained ideas at Car Dealer, our World Cup road trip featurebegan with just a few of us kicking (no pun intended) a few ideas around the office.

“When we came up with the idea of re-creating these iconic images we knew it would be a challenge but we didn’t realisequite how hard it would be. In foot balling terms it was like playing Brazil without a goalie. Any notion of a schedule soonwent out of the window, but we kept going and thankfully we met some great people along the way who loved the idea andwere really happy to be part of it.

Shortbread

It has really struck me since I opened, just how passionatethe citizens of Faringdon are about local produce. What wedo at hare in the woods is hopefully bring together manyelements of local foods in the produce that we make in theshop. Ready meals and cakes, pates and salads. We try touse as much produce from the local vicinity as possible.I love the fact there is honey from Uffington. The thoughtthat those bees are buzzing around just a heartbeat away isjust brilliant! A very clever someone is making reallyauthentic curry sauces just down the road or even the bestcrumbly fudge is being produced near Oxford. It really isvery special!I think It's fantastic that these amazing people arededicating their time to bring us these wonderful products. At the shop we have just started to sell some amazing icecream made in Cirencester. It's Italian gelato actually andthe milk to make it has been sourced just 4 miles away fromwhere it's produced, which is just great. Food miles havebeen on many people's lips of late and is perhaps a bit of afashionable strap line but I think it is just going back to ourroots of food production, so why not try and support all ofthese lovely people? So to accompany this ice-cream, I think shortbread couldn'tbe more perfect. It has taken me an age and lots of practiceto get it just right. Often shortbread can be too thick, notcooked enough or just not good enough ingredients. Isimply use butter, flour and caster sugar. No rice flour, cornflour or semolina here. Just a good old fashioned trio ofingredients.Cream together 110g sugar with 50g caster sugar. Do thisuntil the mixture is smooth and creamy and use a fork forthe job, it works really well!! Then press in 150g plain flour.Or if you like an extra lift use 100g plain and 50g self raising.Bring together with your hand until you have a lovelysmooth ball of dough. Now, you can either press it in to a tinand bake like that then cut when cooked. Or roll out andstamp with a cutter. Re roll any scraps although these willnever be as good as the first roll!Place on a baking sheet and bake at 180°c/gasmark 4 or until golden. Remove from the oven andcool until the shortbread is crisp and sugary. If youbake it all in one, cut whilst still hot.If you don't fancy ice cream, go and pick somelocal strawberries in the sunshine and eat together,a match made in heaven.

What foods are good for longterm weight loss?

· Protein rich foods should be first on your list toconsume each day; they are filling and satisfyingand help to reduce sugar cravings

· Meat, poultry, eggs, fish, dairy and some beansand grains all contain protein - for example Leanbeef, turkey and chicken, sardines ,salmon, mackerel, natural yogurt, cottage cheese, soyabeans, tofu and oats all contain varying amounts ofprotein.

· When choosing carbohydrates we must considertheir energy /sugar content and how much fibre, vitamins and minerals we get from them. So thosefoods low in energy and high in fibre, vitamins andminerals should be top of our eating list.

· Green leafy vegetables, berries and some grainsand pulses can give us what we need when lookingfor weight loss – for example Spinach, kale, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, leeks, blackberries, raspberries, blueberries, strawberries, quinoa andoats are all healthy options for weight loss.

· Nuts and seeds contain good fats, protein andcarbohydrates and in small portions are greatsnacks that keep your energy levels up and helpprevent cravings – for example Macadamia nuts, pecans, pistachios, sunflower seeds, flaxseeds, pumpkin seeds and sesame seeds are greathealthy fillers.

· So what combinations of foods work well forweight loss during a typical day?

· Healthy breakfast – Yogurt with mixed berries, nuts and seeds

· Healthy lunch – Chicken breast wrapped in lettucewith mixed pepper and tomato salad

· Healthy dinner – Grilled salmon with steamedbroccoli, spinach and dwarf beans

Why not try to make up some of you ownrecipes based on what you now know.Send your ideas in to us and we will see ifwe can improve on them.Next month we will be looking atexercises that you can do at home to burnfat. If you need help to understand how it can work foryou, or some coaching from us to make it easy to stickto, please contact the team at The Gym At Carswell

Why being stressed can wreak havoc with yourimmune system and make you physically ill

When we become stressed our bodies produce adrenalineand cortisol as part of the fight or flight process, to help usrun away or fight the threat. However, tests show theimmune systems of those who are stressed for long periodsof time are less sensitive to cortisol.

Studies show how long-term stress plays havoc with theimmune system, raising the odds of catching a cold orreducing the effects of treatment of other illnesses fromheart disease to depression.

Scientists of Carnegie Mellon University in Pennsylvania inthe U.S. questioned 176 men and women about difficultexperiences they had been through in the past 12 months.Drops of the common cold virus were then dripped into theirnose and scientists checked if they caught the germ. Thosewho had been under stress were twice as likely to develop acold.

A second experiment confirmed that the inflammatoryresponse feeds off stress. This occurs when the immune system spots an infection andis a vital first step in fending off disease.

Because inflammation plays a role in many diseases such ascardiovascular, asthma and autoimmune disorders, thismodel suggests why stress impacts them as well.

Stress can lead to a whole range of health problems. But itdoes not have to be like that. There is a great deal ofevidence that it’s the way we think about stress or that, which makes us stressed.

Using a variety of techniques such as mindfulness andhypnosis, you can learn to control the stress response. Beinga solution focused hypnotherapist, I help lots of people startto focus on a more positive less stressful future.Call 07508 658934 for a consultation near Faringdon,Abingdon or Oxford.
