The word has come to defi ne the joy of driving. It’s what you do when the driving means everything, and the place you’re going means almost nothing. It’s about feeling good, opening up and letting go.

And it comes from knowing that safety and fuel economy aren’t compromised. Not one bit. There’s no harm done. It’s just a little fun.

Th ere was a sombre infl uence on a recent scheduled homecom-ing function held at Christina Lake.

A local boy who was attending the Pines Bible Camp in Grand Forks had died in a storm-related inci-dent. According to the BC Coroners Service, Richard Fehr, 11, was attending the camp when a wind storm hit and the cabin he was in was crushed by a falling tree.

“At around 5 p.m. this aft ernoon (July 20) there was an in-credible wind storm,” Pines Bible Camp Ex-ecutive Director Gene Krahn told the Grand Forks Gazette on Fri-day night.

Th e community of Christina Lake also lost power during the storm.

Th e planned home-

coming went ahead even though all had their minds on the tragic passing of young Fehr.

Th e community came together with acts of generosity and ingenuity.

Friday night’s wine and cheese reception at the Christina Living Arts Centre was done by candlelight and while Fortis BC had power up by around noon on Saturday,

there wasn’t electricity for a pancake break-fast at the Christina Lake Community Hall in the morning.

Fortunately, the Christina Lake Fire Department lent a generator, allowing organizers to go ahead with the breakfast, in fact since people didn’t have power, many headed to the hall for some pancakes, eggs, bacon and coff ee.

“I think we prob-

ably had more people because of the power outage and (the num-ber) of people com-ing was fantastic,” explained Christina Lake Community As-sociation President Larry Walker, who estimated the head count for the morning events at 500.

Leah Carnah-an, Christina Lake Homecoming event co-ordinator, said that the wine and cheese

reception seemed a little more magical es-pecially because there was no electricity.

“Th e power did go out and it was (by) candlelight and the ambience was beau-tiful, the cheese was great and we enjoyed ourselves,” she said.

Christina Lake Fire Chief Ken Gresley-Jones said the storm’s eff ect at the Lake paled in comparison to the life lost but his department helping out at the homecom-ing was just part of what it does.

While the chief was away for part of Saturday morning, he was proud of what his team did.

“Th at’s what we do,” Gresley-Jones said. “Christina Lake Fire Department is there for any community emergency and that’s what we do, it’s just normal,” he said.

Babe’s Automo-tive was completely destroyed by fi re last Friday morning.

Th e owner of the Crescent Valley shop, Chris Carlson, said he was under a car cutting through an exhaust system when the blade of his saw hit the gas tank.

A moment later there was a wall of fl ame next to him.

“Th e safety vest I was wearing caught fi re, so the fi rst thing I was thinking was to get that off ,” said Carl-son.

His co-worker tried to move some of the vehicles away from the fl ame while Carlson emptied the shop’s fi re extinguish-ers on the burning ve-hicle.

But they quickly realized the fi re was beyond their ability to deal with. Carlson called 911 around 10 a.m.

Volunteer fi re fi ghters from Cres-cent Valley, Beasley and Tarrys commu-

nity fi re departments responded.

Carlson has been a volunteer with the Crescent Valley fi re department for 10 years, so he also helped knock down the fl ames.

“I’ve been to the

scene of many fi res, so I know this kind of thing happens,” Carl-son said, standing on the back of a fi re truck.

“I guess maybe it hasn’t hit me how bad it is.”

He has minor burns

on his neck. Th e fi re destroyed his shop, as well as eight vehicles, including his family collection of six clas-sic cars.

He estimates it’s about $200,000 in damage

Trail briefs

Add another foot to the high water lev-el of the Columbia River.

With the mighty waterway already fl owing at a near re-cord rate, BC Hydro noted that fl ows in-creased by one foot over the weekend, with fl ows cresting at 225,000 cubic feet per second on Sun-day.

A Columbia Riv-er update Monday, however, noted the river level is coming down. For now.

“(Th e river) is di-minishing gradually as Kootenay River fl ows drop,” read the report for Monday. “It may increase in future but likely not beyond peak fl ows seen to date.”

Tributaries in the central and northern part of the Columbia

River basin showed signifi cant response to rainfall on the weekend but are now receding, said BC Hydro’s stakeholder engagement advisor Jennifer Walker-Lar-sen in the report.

She said the weath-er forecast called for signifi cant rainfall in the northern part of the basin again early this week and then, hopefully, a respite from the rain.

“Depending on infl ows around the Columbia-Kootenay system, high reser-voir levels and Co-lumbia River fl ows may continue until late July or early Au-gust,” she said.

And that could spell trouble in Trail. According to the City of Trail, the river level means some proper-ties in the downtown core of will take on water in their base-

ments through base-ment fl oor drains or other seepage due to the high water table.

“Property own-ers in the downtown should take action to remove any valuable materials or items stored in their base-ments,” read a warn-ing on the city’s web-site.

River rescue

A man clinging

to a log was rescued from the Columbia River aft er falling into the frigid water on Saturday night.

Captain Jason Milne from the Kootenay Boundary Regional Fire Res-cue (KBRFR) said they did not know how the victim fell into the water off of the Esplanade and RCMP are “still in-vestigating” what ex-actly happened.

Four KBRFR members in a rescue boat had some dif-fi culties because of the position the man was wrapped in, said Milne, noting that he was clinging to a log in a pretty precarious situation.

“Th e patient was found (clutching) a log wedged between some submerged trees,” Capt. Milne said in a release.

Sense of alarm increases in regard to river volume in past week

Th anks to a presti-gious scholarship, a J. L. Crowe grad will be taking fl ight this sum-mer.

Alex Farnsworth-Philogene, 18, was accepted into the in-ternational air cadet exchange association in Australia this sum-mer and expects to leave for training this Sunday.

“He always loved planes and when he heard that the cadets could teach him how to fl y, he signed up,” explained his mother, Laura Farnsworth. “He worked his way up—fi rst as a glider pilot and then as a power pilot.”

Alex has been a Trail cadet and J. L. Crowe student for several years and was pleased about receiv-ing one of 10 place-ments reserved for applicants across the country.

In order to apply, he had to demon-strate his involvement in the cadets, good grades and ability to follow orders. He also had to pass an inten-sive screening con-test, but was chuff ed when the acceptance letter fi nally came in the mail.

“I was relieved that I received any type of response because I didn’t know if they

would send a letter to me either way,” he said. “But when I read it, I was really over-joyed.”

He will be traveling for two weeks in Syd-ney and Brisbane and spending time with the cadets in Montre-al before he ages out of the program in Au-gust, when he expects to apply to become an offi cer with the cadets and continue fl ying on the weekends while pursuing a degree.

“If I wanted to do this and hadn’t participated in any-thing else, I probably wouldn’t have got it,” he said.

At the mere age of 12, Alex had complet-ed basic training with the cadets, a series of leadership courses and an introduction to aviation. But it wasn’t long until he was fl ying as a glider

and power pilot—he was only 16.

“Everybody has a hobby and fl ying is mine,” Alex ex-plained. “Th is is my last year in the cadet program before I age out and an exchange seemed like a pretty cool thing to do.”

Alex is eager to meet “like-minded people,” see the sights and wrap up his last year in the cadets be-fore entering a four-year engineering pro-gram at McGill.

He is looking for-ward to staying in an Australian barracks every night, visiting the Australia Zoo and touring the Telstra Tower.

“Because I’m go-ing into engineering, I think it will be really cool to see the Tel-stra Tower on Black Mountain,” Alex said. “It’s like the Austra-

lian version of Bell or Rogers so I’m look-ing forward to seeing that.”

Alex had initially applied for an ex-change program in England because his extended family used to live there and sent him gift s by post, which piqued his in-terest. But he was of-fered a placement in Australia. He wanted to get the travel-bug out of his system be-fore settling into a de-gree program.

“I was still really happy,” he said. “You get three choices when you apply and I got my second so that’s still pretty good.”

Alex was accepted into an engineering program at McGill University this fall and will have roughly one week to settle into Montreal aft er his ex-cursion to Australia.

What’s New with What’s Old?

Latest in an ongo-ing series looking on Kootenaiana on eBay.

A highly coveted brochure about the virtues of the Koote-nays sold this month for $191 US.

Produced by the Canadian Pacifi c Railway in 1897 and entitled Gold in Cari-boo and Kootenay, the fold-out pam-phlet includes a map and much purple prose about the op-portunities of the two regions.

“Th e name of Brit-ish Columbia has in fact become the synonym of min-eral richness, and its TREASURE CHESTS ARE NOW OPEN TO THE WORLD,” it screams.

Of West Kootenay it says: “Utterly un-known a few years ago, and with but inadequate means of communication, it has suddenly, through the discoveries of its great mineral wealth, acquired a fame that has reached far-off lands and attracted hither experienced miners and capital-ists who, convinced of the capabilities of the country, have re-mained to aid in its development.”

A section entitled “Law and Order” reads: “Th ere is a no-ticeable absence of rowdyism and crime in all the camps and the tougher element have discovered that

there is no room for them in the country outside the jails and prisons.”

Th ere are pictures of Ainsworth, Nel-son, Kaslo, Trail, and Sandon, among other places.

You can read the whole thing online at archive.org.

Seven other copies of this brochure, or ones like it, have sold online since 2002 for prices ranging from $28 to $241. Th ey dated between 1895 and 1901, indicating the CPR regularly re-printed them.

• A series of post-marks from defunct

West Kootenay-Boundary post offi ces were auctioned indi-vidually this month. Some fetched consid-erable amounts, while others didn’t sell.

In the former cat-egory was a 1953 cancellation from Broadwater on Lower Arrow Lake, which

went for $66 Cdn. Th e post offi ce closed the following year due to “limited use-fulness.”

Next highest was a 1953 postmark from Poplar Creek, a Lardeau ghost town, that netted $24. It likewise closed a year later when postmas-ter Alexander Robb

resigned.A 1954 postmark

from Makinson, a now-drowned Arrow Lakes settlement, went for $19.50, while others from Taghum (1958) and Rosebery (1929) sold for $15 each.

A couple from prominent ghost towns went for a

song: Sandon (1897) for $2.75 and Phoe-nix (1902) for $2.50.

Another from San-don (1898) and an early one from Na-kusp (1894) didn’t fi nd any bidders at all.

Pictured in top photo, Daniel Kloc (L) and Denis Kleine of Nelson with “Malefi cent.” Above left are John (L) and Patrick McKinnon with “Ratcatcher,” and above right – Peter Vogelaar (L) and Jordan Mounteer with “Wendigo.” The sand sculptures will remain until time and dehydration dictate otherwise.

Arts and Culture

Th e 16th Annual Castlegar Art Walk runs until Septem-ber 16, 2012 and features 27 diff erent artists on display at 25 venues through-out the community. For brochures and information visit the Castlegar Chamber of Commerce at www.castlegar.com or 1995 6th Avenue, Castlegar (250.365.6313).

Here is just one of the delightful artists featured this year.

Artist Name: Sandra Donohue Exhibit Location:

Kalawsky Chevrolet, Buick, GMC (11)

Artist City: Robson, BC

Medium: Paintings (Repre-

sentational)

Years Active: 15

Bio: Sandra Donohue

started painting se-riously in 1997: her love of gardening and fl owers inspired her to dabble in wa-tercolour and her weaver’s background gave her confi dence to work with colour. Aft er becoming a Federation of Cana-

dian Artists (FCA) member in 2001, the longtime Robson res-ident was encouraged to stretch her talent in diff erent directions, using diff erent sub-ject matter and me-dia. Now painting in oil, acrylic, pastel and watercolour, Sandra has earned her Asso-ciate FCA member-ship and this fall is launching a children’s

book featuring her il-lustrations, Hundred Dollar Special, with Salmo author, Kath-ryn Bourdon. Sandra’s work can be found at the Kootenay Gallery (Castlegar), Artisan (Trail) and during the Columbia Basin Cul-ture Tour studio visits (August 11-12, 2012).

Health

People oft en ask me if they should buy or-ganic fruits and veg-etables. Some of the common questions I get include: “Are or-ganic foods better for you?,” “Are they worth the extra cost?” or “I want to reduce my ex-posure to pesticides, which fruits and veg-etables have the most residues?”

I always start by ensuring people that a diet high in plant based foods has many health benefi ts including reduced risk of heart disease, cancer, diabetes and other health prob-lems. Th e benefi ts of consuming adequate amounts of fruits and veggies outweigh the risk of pesticide expo-sure. So regardless of whether you choose conventionally grown produce or organic,

the main goal should be to get a minimum of 7-10 servings of fruits and vegetables each day. One serv-ing equals one piece of fruit or vegetable or half a cup chopped.

However, if you are looking to reduce your exposure to pes-ticides and it’s within your budget to pur-chase organic then I think it’s worth it. It’s even better if you can purchase your organic food from a local source. Choos-ing local foods and buying organic when possible supports a more sustainable food system and allows the industry to grow.

We are entering the time of year where

local food is becom-ing abundant in our province so take ad-vantage of your local farmers markets.

Th e thing I love about the farmers market is you can talk directly to the person who grows your food! You can inquire about their farming prac-tices and use of pes-ticides (if any). Some

foods tend to be more heavily treated as they are diffi cult to grow without getting bugs in them (if you have a cherry tree you probably know what I mean). However, other fruits and vege-tables tend to be more naturally ‘bug free’ and require little or no treatment. You can signifi cantly lower your pesticide intake by limiting the most contaminated pro-duce (or buying them organic) and eating more of the least con-taminated fruits and vegetables.

Th e Environmental Working Group has recently released the 2012 “Shoppers Guide to Pesticide in Pro-

duce”. Th e guide can help you determine which fruits and veg-etables have the most pesticide residues. It is important to con-sider this as a general guide, not a hard and fast rule, as pesticide levels on foods can vary depending on where and how they are grown. Th e list was created based on studies done in the U.S. on local and im-ported fruits and veg-etables. Nearly all of the studies tested pro-duce aft er it had been rinsed or peeled.

To view the exten-sive list of foods and a downloadable shop-pers guide visit www.ewg.org/foodnews/summary/.

Rossland is full of great things to do over the summer. Despite the downtown construction, shops and restaurants are open for business and bustling as ever. Shops on the north side of Columbia Avenue are mostly negotiable through Sourdough Alley, with most stores having a back entrance. Rossland also has more parking spots than it has ever had before, with most tucked behind buildings. Signs are posted to help you fi nd parking, some of which is located behind the Nelson and District Credit Union, Rossland Hardware and across from the Prestige.Rossland has many vibrant dining options, whether you’re in the mood for pizza, sushi or salads. There are also some great places to grab breakfast and a coffee in the morning. At night, the local pubs offer cool brews, food and the occasional music. Every Thursday through the summer, the Rossland Mountain Market offers fresh produce, baked goods and handmade gifts. Local musicians and entertainers play at the market and each week there is a different act to see. For more info go to www.rosslandfood.comIf you’re in the mood for some entertainment, you could check out the Gold Fever Follies’ new show, John Vs. John. It is performed

The Nelson Disc Break ulti-mate frisbee tournament title went to Vancouver’s Sole Survivors at Lakeside pitch on Sunday afternoon after they defeated the host Nel-son Homegrowns. The week-end tournament featured 10 teams from around B.C. and Alberta. The Sunday fi nal featured the two teams who did not suffer a loss the entire weekend. But in the fi nal, the Vancouver squad proved to be too much for the Homegrowns.

Sculpture TalkDavid Ducharme

‘River’s Edge’ (concrete)

Winlaw-based sculptor David Ducharme eventually realized that living in his chosen home for over 20 years still hadn’t taught him all that much about the history of his surroundings. So he did some exploring, for both inspiration and knowledge. A conversation with Sinix’t Nation headman Bob Campbell provided the impetus for his dramatic, appealing entry. At the same time it made him ap-preciate things in a diff erent light.“I always thought of the Kootenay historical mosaic as primarily be-ing European settlement, mining, and the infl uences of the Dukho-bours,” he says. “Speaking with Bob and others, I learned more about other societies here long before us, the Lakes people. I was inspired to try to capture an as-pect of their way of life in ‘River’s Edge’.”Working in an oil/clay mix prior to mould making and casting in concrete, Ducharme has succeed-ed superbly. ‘River’s Edge’ features the sturgeon-infl uenced design of the sharply-nosed canoes the Sinix’t and Ktunaxa people used as they travelled the lakes of the area, living nomadic, fruitful lives dic-tated by nature and the seasons.Ducharme’s work features a canoe-ist battling his way through rapids, upright, attentive and muscled as he fi ghts the current in his buck-ing, pitching craft , using only a single pole to navigate with. Trees line the bank in the background, the foreground is all swirling, foaming waves. Framing the ca-noe edge is a stylized sturgeon tail that binds the piece together fi gu-ratively and historically. ‘River’s Edge’ is full of action, gracefully depicting the inherent dangers of everyday life long before the Eu-ropean infl ux. It’s a way of life that has regrettably vanished. “In my fi gurative work, I strive to

immerse myself in the characters I am sculpting, exposing the es-sence, simplicity or intensity of a moment, bringing them to life. I hope to share with the world an appreciation for beauty, as well as everyday reality.”“Working in sand,” – Ducharme is part of the talented brigade of area sand artisans who regularly win awards at events around the world – “ has provided me with a bridge to other mediums. Right now I’m using my increased awareness of the area’s history, particularly the indigenous peoples, to create a

series of works in concrete.”Award-winning sculptures in sand, snow and ice have nur-tured his skill, enabling his talent to mature and shine in creating magnifi cent life depictions in concrete. “Th e inherent proper-ties of these materials allow the sculptor to render an idea quickly on a monumental scale,” says Ducharme. “I’ve transferred that skill into works that will be more lasting, standing the test of time while celebrating the passage of it.” ‘River’s Edge’ is a testament to this last statement.

“In my fi gurative work, I strive to immerse myself

in the characters I am sculpting.”

ARIES (MAR 21 – APR 20)The ‘heat’ is rising. This can prove to be a good thing, yet perhaps also is causing annoying or even painful friction. We all have our blind spots. These casualties of the ego are common, yet can you see your own? Qualifying your feelings and perceptions, as in ‘I see or experience… it this way’ could go a long way towards offsetting ego clashes so valuable time and energy can be better spent.

TAURUS (APR 20 – MAY 21)A creative cycle is underway. Your home and family are the main stages. You want to make improvements. Others who are not on the same page better clear the way or tune-in. You remain determined to get a lot done. Multi-tasking is likely. Creating more beauty and function and perhaps profi tability too are core motivators.

GEMINI (MAY 21 – JUN 21)A big wave of artistic inspiration is washing in. You are in the mood to take a few risks, try new things, and expand your horizons. Depression or outright anger could be experienced if you do not have outlets that meet your specifi cations. Too much thinking now could lead to worry. Accept there will be revisions to offset stalemating perfectionism.

CANCER (JUN 21 – JUL 22)Building upon new foundations is the call now. The preparation and ground work is ever important in any focus where we seek enduring results. Be willing to take a few risks and while thinking twice and deciding once is ideal, too much thinking can be a problem. Since you are planning for the future, be proactive towards securing a niche that matches your individual style.

LEO (JUL 22 – AUG 23)Taking new leads and initiatives is a core theme now. Your focus is getting sharper by the day, backed by ambitions to increase your exposure. Love between friends is a two way street and someone has to initiate contact. Be the one so you can lead the direction or renewed connections. Inspirations and insights from a forgotten past are featured.

VIRGO (AUG 23 – SEP 22)A busy time behind the scenes continues. This implies networking to make initial contact and key connections for future prospects. Plant the seed now and trust it will gestate, especially if it is in tune with your destiny. In your communications with others, you may be more inclined to listen and/or ask questions than inform.

LIBRA (SEP 22 – OCT 22)Envisioning a brighter future continues. A combination of dreams and ideals are guiding your focus. Weaving adventure into your scope is likely. Cultivating a higher degree of self-reliance feels especially right and important. Balancing feeling secure while simultaneously experiencing a genuine growth/evolution process is a core theme.

SCORPIO (OCT 22 – NOV 21)Some action in your public and/or professional life is getting you some attention. You may not feel as confi dent as you would like, however. If so, review your successes from the past and acknowledge that you will rise again. In your dealings with others, keep the end result in mind and assess the full spectrum of your responsibility implied in long term commitments.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV 21 – DEC 21)Freedom is the word for you now. Whether it is freedom within or without or freedom from or freedom to, some measure of discipline is required. A clear focus with follow through until your objectives are met is implied. Deciphering what past attitudes, values and/or priorities worked and which did not is important now. Allow for unconventionality.

CAPRICORN (DEC 21 – JAN 19)Sometimes it is better to hold our cards closer. You want more answers yet are less inclined to reveal. Assessing your worth or the value of your skills and/or assets may require that you tune-in to the times better. Breaking free from past patterns and conditioning that you deem restrictive is the deep end theme. Yet somehow you may have to give more to succeed.

AQUARIUS (JAN 19 – FEB 19)Who do you love and how and why? These and other such questions are being activated by outer events. New sentiments are stirring. Relationships may be deepening, yet some may be ending as well. A rebellious mood is implied. You are not in the mood to comply with convention or the status quo or yield to other people’s opinions and expectations.

PISCES (FEB 19 – MAR 20)Deciphering what constitutes a healthier fl ow and or lifestyle continues. A main goal is to increase your confi dence levels. Creating more harmony and beauty close to home is likely. Getting clear on what you value may not be so easy though. It may be a good idea to be decisive about the small stuff before you tackle larger considerations so you can do so with the clutter cleared.

Horoscope for the Week July 27, 2012f thTip of the Week: The Sun entered Leo last week and on July 28th will cross paths with Mercury in its retrograde direction. This should manifest as an increase in the drama on both individual and collective fronts. The tempo has already been steadily rising especially since Jupiter entered Gemini, its most challenging sign position, just over a month ago, where it will remain until July 2013. This is especially evident in Europe with the economic crisis. With the Olympics scheduled to get underway this weekend we can expect some excitement from it. In sync with this theme a recent news report stated that the security company hired for this major event, apparently among the most effi cient in the world, signifi cantly underestimated their surveillance requirements and have had to call in the military to compensate for the miscalculation. Thus a strong military presence will accompany the fans from all over the world who will be attending the games. Mars in Libra, its most challenging sign position, also contributes its own unique twist. Hopefully, the organizers of the Olympics will be able to override the complications in communications and electrical devices that are likely to occur due to Mercury Rx. Fortunately, Mercury turns Direct on August 2nd prior to the closing ceremonies.
