Terrestrial Trunked Radio (TETRA) (formerly known

as Trans-European Trunked Radio) is a professional mobile

    radio and two-way transceiver.

TETRA was specifically designed for use by government

agencies, emergency services for public safety networks, rail

transportation staff for train radios, transport services and

    the military.

TETRA is an European Telecommunications Standards

Institute (ETSI) standard, first version published in 1995.

TETRA is the first truly open digital PMR standard.

TETRA standard contains high functionality forEmergency services.

Provides individual, group and direct modecommunications between radios.

TETRA provides Voice and Data Services.

Packet data and fast data transfer services.

380 - 400 MHz for public safety systems.

    TETRA has some unique features:

Directpush-to-talk (PPT), to groups and with priority setting

Centralized call control, for priority and queuing Direct mode, portable to portable without central radio

    coverage (DMO)

Relay mode, one portable can use another mobile device to

link to the central radio Use of one or several timeslots for (low speed) Data

    Voice encryption, different algorithms available

Multiple keys are supported in the TEA

The much lower frequency used gives longer range, thuscutting infrastructure costs.

High spectral efficiency - 4 channels in 25 kHz and no guard

bands, compared to GSM with 8 channels in 200 kHz andguard bands.

Very fast call set-up - a one to many group call is generally

    set-up within 0.5 seconds.

Works at high relative speeds >400 km/h.

Requires a linear amplifier to meet the stringent RF

specifications that allow it to exist alongside other radio

    services.

Handsets are more expensive than cellular.

Data transfer is efficient and long range (many km), but slow

by modern standards at 7.2 Kbits/ per timeslot.

TETRA also provides a point-to-point function that traditional

analogue emergency services radio systems did not provide.

TETRA is built to do one-to-one , one-to-many and many-to-many and are directly relevant to the public safety and

    professional users.

Rapid deployment (transportable) network solutions areavailable for disaster relief and temporary capacity provision.
