Principal’s Report

We have now passed the half way point of Term One

and time is certainly flying. We are moving into a heavy

assessment period for both year groups, and strong

organisational and time management skills are vital to

ensure that students perform to their potential. It is

important that Year 11 students refine these skills to

prepare them well for their Higher School Certificate

year. For Year 12, you should be well prepared and are

reminded to access your Personal Mentor as needed.

Dress code

A general reminder about dress. We seek parental

support to ensure that students are in dress code to

assist us with identifying students on site and helping

to ensure that students are appropriately dressed for St

Marys Senior High School. All students enrolled at St

Marys agreed to meet the dress code requirements. I

am happy to discuss any concerns with students and/or

parents if there are issues you believe the school

should be aware of in order to support students. Even

though we are an adult learning environment, we are

also an educational organisation and as such, we

expect all students to adhere to our dress code.

Principal’s Report continued

Financial assistance

At different times some of our families experience financial stress. Our prime objective at St Marys Senior

High School is to support students in gaining a Higher School Certificate. If at any time a student may require

additional support, please contact the Deputy Principal for Year 11, Danielle Ervine

([email protected]) or Year 12, Leah Havord ([email protected]). They will go over

the options we have available including instalment agreements and financial assistance.

Enrolment 2022

Our enrolment timeframes for Year 11 2022 will sneak up on our families as we all try to balance our busy

lives. We ask our community to share our timeframes via their social media platforms and community

networks. Open Evening will occur this term in line with COVID-safe protocols, with a twilight event on Friday

26 March. Further information about Open Evening can be found in this newsletter. EOI forms for local and

non-local enrolments are available now on our website, and these forms are due by 2:30 pm on Friday 21

May 2021. Any questions can be directed to our Enrolment Secretary via our front office on 02 9623 8333.

Finally, a big thank you to our staff and students who have been participating in a variety of extra-curricular

activities this term, representing our school and themselves with pride and grace. Term One is filled with

sporting pursuits but also includes other extra-curricular activities including public speaking, leadership

events and community celebrations.

Lions Youth of the Year

The Lions Youth of the Year Program is designed to foster, encourage and develop leadership qualities of

young people. The competition is held annually and is comprised of two events. The first event is an interview

where students are asked to answer questions about themselves and current events. The second event is a

public speaking evening which I was lucky enough to be able to attend. The public speaking portion of the

competition requires students to answer two impromptu questions, as well as presenting a two-minute speech

on a topic of their choice.

This year, St Marys Senior High School had two students compete on Tuesday 23 February. Anna Moore

(Year 12) and Olivia Auddino (Year 11) were selected to represent the school at the event, and both students

did extraordinarily well. Both students had strong responses to the impromptu questions and delivered

excellent and thought-provoking speeches on misogyny in Australian politics and the way society talks about

and views individuals with Autism. Anna and Olivia represented themselves, their families and the school

strongly and should be very proud of themselves.

Anna’s exceptional public speaking

abilities, combined with her outstanding

interview skills, saw her win the local

event. She will go on to compete in the

next round of the competition on Sunday

7 March. We wish her all the very best!

Harmony Week 2021

This term Harmony Week is in Week 8 (15 – 21 March 2021).

The message of Harmony Week is Everyone Belongs.

Harmony Week is about celebrating Australian multiculturalism. It is about

inclusiveness, respect and belonging for all Australians, regardless of cultural

or linguistic background.

Australia is one of the most successful multicultural countries in the world, and

the SRC are planning to celebrate Harmony Week this year by running

activities during recess and lunch each day of the week. There will also be an

orange mufti day on Thursday 18 March. More information will be shared with

our students during our Cluster Meetings in Week 7.

Sport Update

It has been a busy fortnight of sport.

It started on Friday 19 February when the girls basketball team played

Cambridge Park High in Round 1 of the CHS Knockout Competition. The

girls played extremely well, showing great sportsmanship and winning the

game 55-11. They play Kingswood High in Round 2 next week and we wish

them the best of luck.

On Monday 22 February we held our school swimming carnival at Ripples

Pool St. Marys. Due to COVID there were restrictions placed on the number

of people that could enter the pool and so the decision was made to make it for competitors only. The students

that attended competed very strongly, breaking records in many events. Students enrolled in SLR attended

to help officiate on the day, ensuring the carnival ran smoothly and efficiently.

The following are the records that were broken on the day:

Harrison Bolton 16 Years Boys 50m Freestyle – 25.97

16 Years Boys 100m Freestyle – 57.30

16 Years Boys 100m Backstroke – 1.10.97

16 Years Boys 100m Breaststroke – 1.16.64

16 Years Boys 50m Butterfly – 28.97

Riley Stevens 17 Years Boys 50m Freestyle – 26.51

17 Years Boys 100m Freestyle – 59.12

Celeste Roldan 16 Years Girls 100m Breaststroke – 1.38.12

Jordan Amies 17 Years Girls 50m Freestyle – 29.87

17 Years Girls 100m Backstroke – 1.14.77

17 Years Girls 100m Breaststroke – 1.27.01

Congratulations to all of our swimmers, and we look forward to reporting on their results at the Werrington

Zone Swimming Carnival in our next newsletter.

On Thursday 25 February, the Werrington Zone Boys

Soccer Gala Day was held at Whalan Reserve. The day

started well with the boys winning two games and drawing

one. Unfortunately, after the third game the rain started

pouring down and the decision was made to cancel further

games in the interests of the safety of all players.

Congratulations to the boys on their fine results and to the

boys picked in the Werrington Zone team: Noah Panczyk,

Naufal Ahmed, Andrew Mansour and Amit Simkhada

The girls volleyball team played Round 2 of the CHS

Knockout Competition on Tuesday 2 March against Chifley

College Senior Campus. The girls played very hard and had

some great rallies. Unfortunately, they did not come away

with the win but represented themselves, their families and

our school admirably. Well done, girls.

Also on Tuesday, the boys touch football team played against St Clair High School in Round 1 of the CHS

Knockout Competition. Once again, while the boys didn’t come away with the win they played hard until the

very end, displaying determination and great team spirit.

On Wednesday 3 March, we had two teams entered into the NSW Oz Tag Schools Championships.

Unfortunately the boys came up against some very strong competition and did not make the quarter finals.

The girls had one win and one draw in the preliminary rounds and came up against Wyndham Sports

Academy in the quarter finals. The girls played with such determination they narrowly missed going through

to the semi finals, going down 4-2. It was a great day and once again, our students made us proud.

Mente manuque – With mind and hand - Page 10

Also on Wednesday was the Werrington Zone Netball Gala Day.

Our girls finished third with two students being selected into the

Werrington Zone team, Alyssa Chisholm and Jacqueline Reed.

Congratulations to all of our team members who played with

great sportsmanship throughout the tournament.

I would also like to thank all of the staff who, as team coaches,

give up their time to support our students in all of their sporting

endeavours. Well done to all.
