Principal’s News

Over the last two weeks I had the great pleasure of attending two music showcases involving our students. The first was the AAS Performing Arts Concert held in the Town Hall on Wednesday the 31st October and secondly the CYS Music Showcase at Maitland on Thursday the 8th November. On both occasions a number of our instrumental music students performed in the Yorke Peninsula Concert Band, with some performing a solo. The commitment the students and their parents/carers have made to provide opportunities for their children to be involved in the band and the high quality music program the teachers and school have provided was richly rewarded with an outstanding performance by the concert band and soloist on both occasions. Our Primary Choir students performed at both events. Once again the commitment of the students to learn 14 songs with actions, their parents/carers to transport their child to such events and the outstanding teaching of Mrs. Debbie Schwartz, supported by Mrs. Lori Brooks was rewarded by two brilliant performances. The AAS Performing Arts Concert also enabled our concert band, ensembles, vocal soloists and our Junior Primary and Primary students to showcase their growth and development in music. To witness the progress our students have made was a wonderful experience. The integration of music and Japanese was a delightful feature of the performance of our Junior Primary students. I congratulate all students involved, their parents/carers and the outstanding teaching provided by Mrs. Schwartz, Mrs. Brooks and Mr. Nathan Wright. Since I began as Principal at AAS, I have worked collaboratively with the Leadership Team and Music teachers to ensure our students have the opportunity to experience and participate in a rich, high quality music program. The connections between learning music and improved language and reading development are well researched and documented. Last Sunday night I watched the first episode of a program looking at the importance of music in schools on the ABC entitled Don’t Stop the Music. I recommend this program to you. If you missed the first episode it is available on iView. This program and the recent performances of our amazing students have reinforced the importance of our Music program. Planning for 2019 is underway. Staffing and the development of an interim budget are important components of this planning. Recently 3 leadership positions were advertised for 2019. The first was the Deputy Principal position. This merit selection panel for this position has been finalised and I congratulate Mrs. Amy East on her successful application for this position. The panels for the remaining two leadership positions of an R to 6 Coordinator and a Student Well-being Leader are ongoing. These leadership positions must be finalised before other staffing can be considered. The interim budget is an important component of our planning. Once it is endorsed by Governing Council it enables the school to begin the year with staffing, programs and resources in place until the budget can be finalised after the day 6 census data is collected. This census data sets the funding provided to the School, based on enrolments. To help the school to prepare an accurate interim budget, it would be appreciated if families could inform the school if they are intending for their child/ren to seek an education elsewhere or if they know of any families seeking to enrol a child/ren at the school. Next Friday, 23rd November, is a student free day. Staff will be engaged in the Site Self Review process. This process will support the development of the Site Improvement Plan for 2019 - 2021. Teachers will also be considering the implications of the goals, targets and actions identified in the Site Improvement Plan on their plans for teaching and learning in 2019. Our Year 12 students are close to completing their final assessment tasks and our teachers have or are finalising the preparation of materials to be sent to the SACE Board for assessing and moderation. Results for year 12 students will be available on the 18th December. I remind Student and their families that Mrs Amy East and other members of the Leadership Team will be available on this day to discuss results. Kind regards, Karen Bond

AAS News

From the Deputy…….

It’s hard to believe that there are only 4 ½ weeks left in the 2018 school year! R-6 staff are currently working on the end of year reports which will be forwarded home on Thursday 13th December. Classes are also busily preparing their item for our annual Presentation Night. In preparation for 2019, Leadership and teaching staff are analysing all of our data sets to determine our site goals. One of the reports we are using for this is our 2018 Wellbeing and Engagement survey results. Our students completed this survey in August. There are many areas of improvement in this report, including reductions in Verbal bullying from 23% in 2017 to 10% in 2018, Physical bullying from 10% in 2016 to 5% in 2017 and 3% in 2018 and Social bullying from 9% in 2017 to 4% in 2018. The AAS 2018 results in these areas are all lower than the percentages in comparison to the overall schools results. These reductions can be attributed to the successful work which is occurring in classrooms through Pastoral Care programs and the focus on ‘Rude, Mean, Bullying’ and to programs including Rock and Water, Community Mentoring and Counselling, including Eric Adam’s Pastoral Care Worker programs and Leonie Peterson’s wellbeing focus. Our assembly this week will be hosted by the Year 10 class. It will be held in the gym from 2.40pm. Kind regards Margaret
