Newsletter Week 6 Term 2 2019 Principal’s message Term 2 has been going extremely well at Summer Hill with the students participating in many activities and events, and many representing our school at extra curricula activities. In Weeks 3 and 4 Year 3 and 5 students were our first cohort to sit the NAPLAN tests online – while there were some minor troubleshooting issues once the tests started the students are to be congratulated for their participation. Well done to you all. A big thanks to Ms Williams for coordinating the tests to make sure students were provided with the best possible test conditions. Students have also represented our school and participated in the zone cross country, Year 6, 5 and 4 camps, debating, chess, band workshops, concerts and of course the P&C working bee. It has been an extremely busy and productive term. Thank you to those parents who continue to show their support by attending school events such as K-6 assemblies, P&C events and concerts. Our students enjoy showcasing what they have learnt, their school and their achievements. Teachers are currently in the process of reviewing the learning progress of our students to write reports that will be sent home to families on Wednesday in Week 10, the 3 rd of July. Please take the time to sit with your child to read and discuss the report, progress toward their learning goals and what they have enjoyed at school so far this year. We are excited to report that all of our learning spaces now have new interactive projector systems – the final few were installed last week. Our next steps will be to equip all of our classrooms with a number of devices (iPads, laptops and chromebooks) so that every class and every student has access to technologies to enhance their learning throughout the day. Our P&C have provided the funds for the additional devices we will purchase for this to occur. I have been working closely with our ICT team to roll out this initiative. We have a strong focus on learning for the future at Summer Hill so that our students are equipped for learning today and into the future. This week our Assistant Principals, Mrs Thompson, Mrs Butler, Mr Kay, Ms Meldrum, and I visited Parramatta Public School to experience one of the Departments light house schools for learning for the future. We were fortunate enough to be invited into classrooms to talk to the students and their teachers. We are excited about what we have learnt and about our journey toward learning for the future at Summer Hill. Thank you for taking the time to read about what’s happening at Summer Hill Public School, we are very excited to report what our students have been doing. Our school took part in Reconciliation Week recently where we held an assembly that marked Sorry Day and classes 2JM and 5MA talked to us about

the theme: Walk Together with Courage. Students wore Sorry Flowers to mark their respect for members of the Stolen Generations. And we held our

first ever raising of the Torres Strait Islander flag.

    Reconciliation Week Sorry Day Assembly

An athletics assembly for Grades 3 - 6 will be held on Friday of Week 10, 5 July at 9.15am. Students will receive their athletics ribbons.

    Athletics Assembly Reminder

Year 6 students from our school have recently undertaken an education tour of the national capital. Students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australian history, culture, heritage and democracy.

The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing $20 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards the costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion. This payment has been taken into consideration with the total excursion costs.

Hi everyone, There’s a lot going on!

Volunteers - We need your ID checked. Summer Hill Public School has a strong culture of volunteering, it helps to build our supportive and friendly school community and we highly value the time that you can spare to help out at P&C and school events. In keeping with the Department of Education Policy, all volunteers will now need to be cleared via an ID check. It's simple....just bring 100 points of ID to the school office and Eve will put you on the register - no need to do a Working with Children application. Can't make it to school.... you can apply for a Working with Children Check here (choose the free volunteer option) https://www.service.nsw.gov.au/transaction/apply-working-children-check . Visit a local Service NSW Centre to complete the registration. Send your WWCC, date of birth and full name details to Eve for registration [email protected]

For more information, a Working With Children fact sheet, declaration for volunteers and proof of identity information can be found on the school website at: https://summerhill-p.schools.nsw.gov.au/parent-information-and-forms.html

Gardening Bee The P&C school gardening bee on Saturday 25 May was very successful. Lots of families and kids joined in for the afternoon, getting plenty of active time outdoors. We completed lots of weeding, pruning and planting in the native gardens and tidying up the vegetable garden. We also had a great team of helpers cleaning and staining benches and timber play equipment. Thank you to all of our volunteers and in particular Freya Hartley, our organiser.

P&C Meetings Everyone is welcome to come along. Our next meeting will be in the school hall 7:00 on Tues 18 June.
