In an age of pol i t ical , cultural and economic global i-zat ion when cl imate changes result in the opening of new shipping routes and access to hi therto inacces-sible natural resources in the Arct ic , the region is the object of increased global scien-t i f ic , pol i t ical and commercial atten-t ion. Not only Arct ic states but also the EU, the US and Asian powers see themselves as stakeholders and are vying for access to and inf luence on the development of the region. The impacts of such engagement are l ikely to be great , both on the relat ionships between global actors and on Arct ic communit ies , which are of-ten small and character ized by unique cultural ident i t ies , economic and/or pol i t ical de-pendency and structures only part ly geared towards local ca-

pacity and competence-bui ld ing at the scale demanded by such massive pressures. Pol i t ical , cultural , econom-ic , social and environmental sustainable development

thus becomes essent ial .

This special izat ion gives part icular at-tent ion to studies in the human sci-

ences within the areas of social and cultural encounters and

exchange, inter-cultural com-municat ion, nat ion-bui ld ing, geo-pol i t ics and global iza-t ion, governance and sus-tainable development . In lectures, relevant theories of ident i ty-bui ld ing, inter-

cultural communicat ion, in-ternat ional relat ions and

sustainable development wi l l be appl ied to case studies from

across the Arct ic .

INNOVATIVE LEARNING

Our learning model rests upon pr inciples of interdis-cipl inari ty, problem-based learning and project work. Today, we are one of the leading universi t ies in this method - but what truly sets us apart is the close con-nect ion between students and faculty. I t begins by students themselves ident i fy ing real-world problems, which they tackle through group projects in coopera-t ion with their supervisor. In a recent OECD evaluat ion, our teaching model was applauded for being “opt imal for learning”.
