Program Organization

ReadyGEN is organized around unit modules (six units in grades K-2; four units in grades 3-

5) with a focus on standards-based topics. Text sets, comprised of full length and shorter

authentic pieces of literary and informational trade books and texts, are used to build

knowledge around these topics for sustained periods of time. All texts are aligned to the

complexity requirements outlined in the Common Core Standards, ensuring that all students

interact with appropriate grade-level texts. Teachers will also have access to a variety of

scaffolded strategies to help support all learners.

Features and Benefits

Ready to Learn

ReadyGEN actively engages children in literacy experiences, with authentic, rigorous texts

serving as the core of all instruction. These texts serve as the springboard into the

exploration of language, literacy, and collaboration.

ReadyGEN is the only elementary literacy program that puts a library of 12

authentic trade books in the hands of every child.

Kindergarten teachers will receive one set of 12 titles to be read aloud to students.

NEW! Digital access to every trade book presents a unique 1:1 learning opportunity

and a shift in students’ behavior from passive to active learning.

Ready to Teach

The design principle of backward mapping is used to ensure that activities are explicitly linked

to and driven by targeted standards. Text-based instruction has been developed to enable

students to acquire Enduring Understandings about the ways in which reading, writing, and

learning deepen knowledge and insight of the world. These consistent features and

architecture are found throughout ReadyGEN leading to an ever-increasing articulation of

sophistication across modules, units, and grades.

ReadyGEN instruction is routines-based, allowing for consistency and internalization of

strategies by teachers and students. Freddy Hiebert and P. David Pearson’s Generative

Vocabulary approach and corresponding routines make visible to students critical functions

and features of words and connections among words. By teaching vocabulary in clusters of

ideas rather than in isolation, it allows students to generate and learn many more words.

Writing instructional routines always encourage the reciprocity between reading and writing

to promote student thinking and understanding through text- based evidence. All writing and

vocabulary instruction is done within the context of reading the topically- related text sets—

reading multiple times for specific purposes to build close reading and higher order thinking

skills. This cohesive and comprehensive curriculum ensures a ready-made suite of

resources, so teachers can spend less time creating lessons and more time teaching.

Ready to Soar

We know all children come to school with different backgrounds and skills, and some need

more support than others in meeting these heightened expectations. The ReadyGEN

Teacher’s Guide suggestions pinpoint aspects of the text or instruction where stumbling

blocks might occur and provides strategies to mediate these difficulties.

NEW! Interactive Close Reading Support and Lesson Modeling Videos will allow all students,

including ELLs, struggling readers, and accelerated learners, to successfully participate in

and progress through the daily lesson with their peers.

For those students who would benefit from even more support, the Scaffolded Strategies

Handbook provides scaffolded instruction, useful strategies, and practical routines in

accessing text as well as writing. Under the guidance of program author, Sharon Vaughn, the

Scaffolded Strategies Handbook offers data-driven differentiation so students receive the

personal attention they deserve.

ReadyGEN’s comprehensive assessment system puts students on the path to Next

Generation Assessment success:

A Baseline Assessment guides teachers on areas where students may struggle

while trying to access complex texts and apply standards. Instruction will directly tie

to the scaffolds that are provided as part of each module in the Scaffolded Strategies

Handbook

Formative checkpoints throughout instruction allow teachers to adjust how they

are strategically intervening with students.

Backwards Mapping ensures deep and transferable understanding of Big Ideas,

Enduring Understandings, and Essential Questions; the Performance-Based

Assessment at the end of each module is the engine that drives all tasks and

promotes positive outcomes by allowing students to connect their learning through

reading, writing, and exploring text.

Access to Technology-Enhanced Items (TEIs) lead to deeper student

understanding and increased student responsibilities

Summative, End-of-Unit Assessments allow teachers to assess student progress

in reading, vocabulary analysis, and writing

The Baseline and End of Unit Assessment can be administered online. Teachers may also

build their own multiple-choice and gridded-response assessments online using teacher-

created items.

NEW! Technology-Enhanced Items (TEIs) will appear on the:

Baseline Assessment (Grades 2-5)

All End-of-Unit Assessments

Foundational Skills Instruction

NEW! Phonics (K-3) and Word Analysis (4-5) lessons will be integrated into ReadyGEN

instruction; this instruction had previously lived outside of the core offering in a separate

Teacher’s Guide, but will now appear in the back of every ReadyGEN Teacher’s Guide.

Every lesson follows a systematic approach and integrates phonemic awareness, phonics,

and fluency, into daily instructional routines. Foundational skills instruction was designed to

work in whole and small group settings, and we recommend that teachers allocate 20-30

minutes of their reading block to teaching these skills.

Additional Resources:

Picture Word Cards (K-3) Alphabet Cards (K-3)

Letter Tiles (K-3) Phonics Activity Mats (K-3)

High-Frequency Words Cards (K-1)

The Leveled Text Library includes 60 topically-related texts at each grade (10 titles per unit

in Grades K-2 and 15 titles per Unit in Grades 3-5; 6 copies each) aligned to the ReadyGEN

Essential Question and Enduring Understandings. Teachers are encouraged to use the

leveled texts in combination with their classroom instruction to help students develop self-

extending reading and thinking strategies. Leveled texts are ideal for small group or
