ReadyGEN is an integrated and well-balanced approach to reading and writing instruction. Unlike a traditional core basal offering, ReadyGEN was intentionally designed to provide students and teachers with the tools necessary to meet the Common Core instructional shifts; Authentic, rigorous “Text Sets” build knowledge around unit themes that actively engage students, and a complete array of print and digital resources that provide you with the daily support you need while offering the flexibility you desire.

Program Organization ReadyGEN is organized around unit modules (six units in grades K-2; four units in grades 3-5). Text Sets are used to build knowledge around unit themes, which emphasize the common characteristics of a unifying concept, and promote in-depth understanding through daily lessons in the two modules. All texts are aligned to the complexity requirements outlined in the Common Core Standards, ensuring that all students interact with appropriate grade-level texts.

AUTHENTIC TEXT AT THE CORE OF INSTRUCTIONReadyGEN actively engages children in literacy experiences, with authentic, rigorous “Text Sets” as the core of all instruction. Each Text Set is comprised of full-length informational and literary trade books and texts spanning multiple genres and cultures. These titles serve as the springboard into the exploration of language, literacy, and collaboration.

ReadyGEN is the only elementary literacy program that puts a library of 12 authentic trade books in the hands of every learner.

Kindergarten teachers will receive one set of 12 titles to be read aloud to students.

Digital access to every trade book presents a unique 1:1 learning opportunity and a shift in students’ behavior from passive to active learning.

Interactive Anchor Texts bring content to life, help build background for all students and encourage the love of reading

BUILT WITH RESULTS IN MINDThe design principle of backward mapping is used to ensure that activities are explicitly linked to and driven by targeted standards. Text-based instruction has been developed to enable students to acquire Enduring Understandings about the ways in which reading, writing, and learning deepen knowledge and insight of the world. These consistent features and architecture are found throughout ReadyGEN leading to an ever-increasing articulation of sophistication across modules, units, and grades.

ReadyGEN lessons are designed around Dr. P. David Pearson’s gradual release of responsibility model with the goal of building independent readers and writers. As teachers use authentic text to model reading and writing practices, students work to master rigorous standards. First, students Build Understanding as part of Whole Group Reading instruction. From there, students practice the act of Close Reading and learn how to unlock vocabulary. Every lesson offers a clear choice for teacher-directed small group instruction, and also provides a number of options for engaging independent learners during small group time. All writing and vocabulary instruction is done within the context of reading multiple times for specific purposes to build close reading and higher order thinking skills. Students are taught each day to carefully analyze and synthesize sources, write to sources, and defend claims as part of Whole Group Writing instruction, and each

writing lesson focuses on one writing mode as specified in the Common Core standards. Finally,

explicit instruction guides students through the writing process, requiring them to analyze good

writing models from the text sets they read.

Routines, which act as the foundation of the ReadyGEN instructional plan, provide the framework around which teachers can flexibly respond to students’ needs from day to day. Teachers are widely encouraged to establish routines, and use formative assessment data, along with their teacher resources to prepare for each day of class.

Freddy Hiebert and P. David Pearson’s Generative Vocabulary approach and corresponding routines make visible to students critical functions and features of words and connections among words. By teaching vocabulary in clusters of ideas rather than in isolation, it allows students to generate and learn many more words.

Writing instructional routines always encourage the reciprocity between reading and writing to promote student thinking and understanding through text- based evidence. This cohesive and comprehensive curriculum ensures a ready-made suite of resources, so teachers can spend less time creating lessons and more time teaching.

Discrete lessons focusing on grade-level-appropriate, complex grammatical structures as part of the instruction on language conventions. Lessons can be taught in any order, realizing that mastery of language conventions develops along a non-linear progression.

The study of academic language is firmly embedded in the Scaffolded Strategies Handbook. In the “Prepare to Read” section, students preview domain-specific vocabulary through the use of routines, and the “Interact with Text” section provides methods for supporting the teaching and learning of academic vocabulary.

Unlock Language LearningProvides scaffolded lessons to help English language learners “unlock” the anchor and supporting texts.  Passages, vocabulary, and questions are geared towards building background knowledge for students learning English so that they can dig deeper into vocabulary and structure--regardless of their language proficiency.

ReadyGEN also provides accelerated learners with small group scaffolding opportunities that enhance and extend learning.

ReadyUp! InterventionAcknowledging that all students require additional or differentiated instruction depending on texts and tasks, ReadyUp! Intervention provides fluid entry and exit points that make lessons accessible and user friendly. Targeted foundational skill instruction provides a strong base for beginning and struggling readers and writers at the early elementary grades, while

vocabulary and comprehension lessons help students at all levels develop the necessary skills to succeed both in and out of school.

Assessment and ReportingBaseline Assessment

The Baseline Assessment evaluates student proficiency in foundational skills, listening and reading comprehension, vocabulary, and writing. The Beginning-of-Year Fluency Test and Running Record provide students’ oral reading rate and oral reading accuracy, which may be used to verify instructional decisions suggested by the Baseline Assessment and to help identify a student’s particular strengths and weaknesses in reading and language development. All of this feedback can help teachers tailor their instruction during both whole-group and small-group lessons so that all students experience success.

Performance-Based Assessments

The Performance-Based Assessment at the end of each module is the engine that drives all tasks and promotes positive outcomes by allowing students to connect their learning through reading, writing, and exploring text.

End-of-Unit Assessments

Summative, End-of-Unit Assessments, which allow teachers to assess student progress in reading, vocabulary analysis, and writing, are modeled after expectations for new assessments aligned to the Common Core standards.

Assessing the Progress of English Language Learners

Instructional strategies to help prepare ELLs for formal assessments, as well as appropriate accommodations for teachers to use during test administration, appear in the Assessment Book Teacher’s Manual. In addition, the Assessment Book Teacher’s Manual offers two tools to assist teachers in evaluating the progress of ELLs in their class: a Profile of English-language learners’ checklist and an Observing English-language learner’s form.

Program Agnostic Practice Tests

College & Career Readiness and Balanced Practice Tests and Performance Tasks are intended to prepare students for next-generation assessment challenges, with new item types based on released models. Practice Tests and Performance Tasks will familiarize students with the various item types that will appear in next-generation assessments such as:

Technology Enhanced Items

Technology-Enhanced Items (TEIs) are responses that go beyond the traditional multiple-choice, and selected or constructed-response item types. These items will appear on the ReadyGEN Baseline Assessment in Grades 2-5, on all End-of-Unit Assessments, and on program-agnostic Balanced Performance Tasks. TEIs may include:

Foundational Skills InstructionPhonics (K-3) and Word Analysis (4-6) lessons will be integrated into ReadyGEN instruction; this instruction had previously lived outside of the core offering in a separate Teacher’s Guide, but will now appear in the back of every ReadyGEN Teacher’s Guide. Every lesson follows a systematic approach and integrates phonemic awareness, phonics, and fluency, into daily instructional routines. Foundational skills instruction was designed to work in whole and small group settings, and we recommend that teachers allocate 20-30 minutes of their reading block to teaching these skills.

Teaching short –a and long vowel Sounds in Kindergarten:

ReadyGEN exposes Kindergarten students to all 26 letters of the alphabet the first 4 weeks of the year; we also use this as a time to teach routines and how to move in small group.

By week 7, we introduce the short a- and we begin blending. As outlined by the Common Core standards, we expose students to long vowels right after teaching short vowel sounds, and then continue to spiral and reinforce until students reach mastery. By the end of Unit 5, all of the Kindergarten phonics elements have been taught, and students can spend the last 6 weeks of the year reading.A collection of readers and interactivities to support foundational skills instruction are available separately (see Program Components).

Leveled Text LibraryThe Leveled Text Library includes 60 topically-related texts (6 copies each) at each grade aligned to the ReadyGEN Essential Question and Enduring Understandings. Teachers are encouraged to use the leveled texts in combination with their classroom instruction to help students develop self-extending reading and thinking strategies. Leveled texts are ideal for

small group or independent reading practice, and include texts at a wider range of complexity within each grade band. Digital access to every title allows teachers to search for Leveled Text and corresponding instructional plans across grade-levels to further differentiate instruction.

Online Assessment and Reporting

New assessments aligned to the Common Core standards are being developed in an effort to determine student preparedness for the rigors of college and the demands of 21st century careers. The ReadyGEN End-of-Unit Assessments and portions of the Baseline Assessment are modeled after expectations for these new tests. Online test administration help students familiarize themselves with the types of items they will encounter on future large-scale assessments, as well as allow for automatic scoring and reporting. The DATA tab on Pearson Realize provides class and student data, including standards mastery, overall progress, and time on task. Teachers can also view data individually by student from the class assignment list.

Adapt Lessons with the Click of a ButtonMyGEN provides step-by-step instructions on how to adapt any ReadyGEN module

Determine the Right Literacy PathwayReadyGEN is not taking the place of Reading Street. Both ReadyGEN and Reading Street are intended to function as core programs for all students, but in order to compete in more Balanced Literacy markets than we have been able to in the past with Reading Street, you will see the following differences in ReadyGEN:

ReadyGEN is anchored by the framework of the CCSS, whereas Reading Street is focused on discreet skills and strategies.

ReadyGEN presents modeled reading experiences with authentic text with time for students to practice, build motivation, engagement, and stamina. However, a school or district with novice teachers may require Reading Street’s explicit instruction.

ReadyGEN provides every student with their own library of authentic, full-length trade books and texts. There is no student anthology.

ReadyGEN is structured, but not scripted. Some teachers may not require the level of scripting found in Reading Street.

Whereas ReadyGEN offers formative checkpoints throughout instruction, Reading Street gives teachers the opportunity to collect “hard data” on a weekly, and sometimes daily basis.
