I think that human beings cannot be subdivided into spirit OR body we are both. I don’t know about you, but I have experiences that I would call spiritual, others I would call “fleshy.” Maybe, however, I cannot divide them in such a way human experiences, when God is in the mix, defy definition. Let me give some examples. When I eat with my family, most times we are concerned with getting “reacquainted” after a day at school, or work. Rarely do we sit down to a meal together and someone says, “I haven’t eaten all day! I am fam- ished!” I would say that eating with my family is one of those inexplicable experiences: of course, we fulfill the bodily function of nourishing the body, but the spiritual nourishment is also there in the conversation. If, on the other hand, I sit down to a meal with someone who has had nothing to eat for some time, the conversation does not come as easily; the body needs to be nourished. Perhaps, after the meal, the person will feel more comfortable and wish to share perhaps not; but what is certain, spiritual experiences are not as easily discerned when the belly is empty. The resurrected Jesus shows us that human beings are made up of both spiritual and bodily desires. In reali- ty, the spiritual always exists with the bodily experience, but when bellies are full, we more easily recognize the spiritual. Perhaps more importantly, when we eat, can we recognize that Jesus eats with us? Can we see Jesus in the other person with whom we eat, or are we too consumed with filling the belly? As Luke tells us, joy is part of our experience when Jesus stands in our presence; but on its heels comes dis- believing and wondering. Faith is like that; just when I think I have everything figured out, God makes the ordinary extraordinary and that makes me uneasy. I want Jesus to be above human vulnerability, above the challenges I face so that he can be my “superman”! I don’t want a Savior who eats, cries, gets angry, or even dies; and yet, that is the kind of Sav- ior we actually have! The one who comes and gives peace, is the same one who dies on a cross; the same Jesus who suffers the punishment of Roman oppression, is the same one who sits with me, walks with me, and suffers with me every step of my faith journey. We do not have the option of dividing which part of Jesus is human, which is divine; we also do not have the option of dividing out ourselves as spiritual/human. All that we have, all that we are is part of our experi- ence. Where is God in all that? Perhaps across the table from us asking for a piece of meat, or a smile, or just a word. Alleluia! Christ is Risen! + Pr Tim

“While in their joy they were disbelieving and still wondering, Jesus said to the disciples, “Have you anything here to eat?”

The Good News according to Luke 24.41

Teillard de Chardin, a Roman Catholic priest who was also a scientist once said, “We are not bodies of flesh seeking a spiritual experience; we are spiritual bodies seeking a bodily experi-ence.”

I am not certain I like, or even agree with Chardin’s observation. I think that human beings cannot be subdivided into spirit OR body – we are both. I don’t know about you, but I have experiences that I would call spiritual, others I would call “fleshy.” Maybe, however, I cannot divide them in such a way – human experiences, when God is in the mix, defy definition. Let me give some examples.

When I eat with my family, most times we are concerned with getting “reacquainted” after a day at school, or work. Rarely do we sit down to a meal together and someone says, “I haven’t eaten all day! I am fam-ished!” I would say that eating with my family is one of those inexplicable experiences: of course, we fulfill the bodily function of nourishing the body, but the spiritual nourishment is also there in the conversation.

If, on the other hand, I sit down to a meal with someone who has had nothing to eat for some time, the conversation does not come as easily; the body needs to be nourished. Perhaps, after the meal, the person will feel more comfortable and wish to share – perhaps not; but what is certain, spiritual experiences are not as easily discerned when the belly is empty.

The resurrected Jesus shows us that human beings are made up of both spiritual and bodily desires. In reali-ty, the spiritual always exists with the bodily experience, but when bellies are full, we more easily recognize the spiritual. Perhaps more importantly, when we eat, can we recognize that Jesus eats with us? Can we see Jesus in the other person with whom we eat, or are we too consumed with filling the belly?

As Luke tells us, joy is part of our experience when Jesus stands in our presence; but on its heels comes dis-believing and wondering. Faith is like that; just when I think I have everything figured out, God makes the ordinary extraordinary – and that makes me uneasy.

I want Jesus to be above human vulnerability, above the challenges I face so that he can be my “superman”! I don’t want a Savior who eats, cries, gets angry, or even dies; and yet, that is the kind of Sav-ior we actually have!

All that we have, all that we are is part of our experi-ence. Where is God in all that? Perhaps across the table from us asking for a piece of meat, or a smile, or just a word.

Alleluia! Christ is Risen!

FOOD AND PAPER PANTRY

Our Innkeeper guests are grateful for the generosity of this community’s dona-

tions over the years. Food donations are still being accepted and encouraged, but

the Food Pantry will be starting to focus more on paper products, cleaning sup-

plies, and personal hygiene in the future. If you would like to help us with this

project, we will be collecting household cleaning products, laundry soap, dryer

sheets, dish soap, paper towels, toilet paper, body soap, deodorant, shampoo, conditioner, shav-

ers for men and women, shaving cream, toothbrushes, toothpaste, dental floss, lip balm, body

lotion, feminine hygiene products, etc. We thank you for your donations.

SYMPATHY

We pray for God’s comfort for

the following families who re-cently lost a loved one:

The Schey family on the loss of Laurie’s aunt, Virginia Emmerich, who passed away

on April 5.

The Diehl family on the loss of John’s aunt, Mary Diehl Eifrig, who passed away April 7.

Dear Zion’s Lutheran Church Members and Pastor Reynolds, Thank you so much for inviting me into your church home last month, to speak on behalf of our agency and domestic violence shelter, The House of Ruth. Thank you also for the numerous donations you have made to us to better allow us to serve a very vulnerable population in our community. We are so blessed to have your help and support.

Beth Gerken, Executive Director Center for Child and Family Advocacy

————————————————————————————————————————————–———- I just wanted to say thank you for the four people that were at the laundry on Sunday [March 22] af-ternoon giving out soap and quarters. I received some quarters to dry my clothes. What a wonderful way to show the love of Jesus by helping each other. This truly made my day extra special. May each of you be blessed in Jesus’ name. Anonymous ————————————————————————————————————————————–———- Zion’s Sunday School Children, Thank you for the special card for Easter Season. God Bless You!

DEACON SUPPORT TEAM

All members should be aware of their deacon and hopefully have met him or her to discuss any concerns or questions you may have had. Your deacons have a sincere interest in serving your needs and encourage you to bring your needs to the attention of Pastor, the deacon group or council which-ever is appropriate. In turn, we trust you have an equally sincere interest in getting to know your dea-con as a present and future friend and confidant. We also want to emphasize the importance of speaking with Pastor whenever the need arises. He wants to know your concerns to help provide a solution or answers to your questions. He remains the best resource within our congregation to share wisdom and knowledge. Deacons are not exempt from having a deacon of their own. At times we need someone willing to listen and we turn to our deacon. In our bi-monthly meetings, the nine deacons discuss a variety of topics concerning the spiritual welfare of the congregation. Most importantly we are available for you when your needs might require someone to talk with other than Pastor Tim. We are grateful for the opportunity to serve the members of Zion’s Lutheran Church and we en-courage you to reach out to your deacon whenever the need arises. Please call the church office for any assistance.

Thank you for the fantastic job the choirs, Youth Sunday School class, and teachers did for the late Easter Sunday Service! It was just heartwarming to see our youth’s participation in the ser-vice!!! The addition of their smiling faces, the spring colors and deco-rations, the banner, the waving streamers and Pastor’s art work, made for a most joyous Easter celebration! The egg hunt and beautiful weather was a perfect ending to the morning. We could feel Jesus smiling too!
