Nearly 340 boys and girls participated in the 9th Annual OSU Youth Football Mini Camp on Saturday, March 15th. They came decked out in their black and orange finery from all over the state including the local valley, coast, Portland Metro and even Washington.

The camp is set up as a “mini game day” according to Brian Mills, the Boys & Girls Club Athletic Director. “We want the kids and families to get the whole experience of being at OSU during a football game including having the marching band and Benny Beaver here.”

Club CEO Helen Higgins and Club A.D. Brian Mills led a few cheers and fired up the crowd. Head Coach Mike Riley led his traditional “Hip Hip Hooray”. The young players were then divided into groups by grade and were sent to rotating stations for the next two hours participating in drills that included kicking field goals, catching passes, using tackling dummies, getting through obstacle courses, and running plays with the OSU players.

“This is just the best experience for the kids,” said one parent. “You get to see theses guys on the field and on TV but for the kids to actually meet their heroes is something they won’t forget.”

By the looks on everyone’s faces it was hard to tell who was having more fun, the kids or the players. As each group rotated they were giving high fives and fist bumps and a few were giving directions on which player to tackle as they moved on.

As the morning wrapped up, Head Coach Mike Riley said a few words to the kids and families and then passed the microphone on to some of the players who talked about the importance of teamwork, grades and hard work. But, they weren’t done yet. After the camp concluded, players, coaches and even Benny stayed around for another hour to sign autographs and take pictures.

This annual event is a partnership with OSU Football and the Boys & Girls Club of Corvallis. The event is free so everyone can participate, but donations are accepted for use as scholarships for the Boys & Girls Club sports programs.

Thank you to OSU Football players, coaches and staff for a great event. If you would like to participate, the 10th annual event will be held mid-March, 2015.

Angelica Báez and Amy Burris have been working with elementary students at Lincoln Elementary through our Reading Buddies program. Although they are only scheduled for

one hour, most days they stay until the end of programming. The students adore them, and so do we. Keep up the good work ladies!

Summer Club. Fun All Summer Long All kids ages 5-14 are all welcome at Summer Club. Summer fun starts June 16th and runs through August 22nd. Children are separated into groups by grade and led by counselors. Activities include games, arts/crafts, sports, technology, music and more. Fridays have special themes, and there are field trips to Osborn Aquatic Center twice a month for swimming. Kids will receive two snacks and a school district lunch. You don’t have to be a Club member to participate. Registration is going on now.

Club basketball TeamsSpend Time At OSU

In January, middle school basketball teams from the Club were invited to spend the afternoon at Oregon State. 150 team members, coaches and their families had lunch at Valley Football Center and listened to OSU Asst. Men’s Basketball Coach Nate Pomeday speak about the importance of commitment and teamwork, along with academics. They finished off the day watching OSU beat the Ducks in the Civil War.

Teen Summit 2014On March 10th, high school teens from the Club attended the Teen Summit on the OSU Campus. It gave teens from Benton County an opportunity to come together, access resources and learn more about important issues that affect their lives. Comedic Keynote Speaker Russ Peak focused on the topic of teen choices including character, leadership and bullying. Teens also attended workshops and took tours of different parts of OSU including the Music Department, dorm life, and Athletics.

Millionaire’s ClubThe Clubhouse has partnered with Washington Federal Bank to establish savings accounts for our elementary aged youth. Kids can open an account with just $5 which Washington Federal matches. Once a week the kids get a small lesson on banking, e.g. interest, filling out deposit slips and how to write a check. They also have a chance to deposit funds into their savings accounts. Each participant has come up with a goal for his/her account such as a Disney vacation, toys, fundraising for a cause or saving for college.

Safety Town Registration Going On Now Safety Town teaches incoming kindergarteners important safety concepts at an early age. With the guidance of a teacher and teen instructors, children are introduced to important safety concepts, such as stranger, animal and fire safety. Combined with songs, art projects, videos and field trips, the program provides a fun interactive learning experience for children. Safety Town features a miniature town complete with pedal cars where children enjoy learning pedestrian and car safety.

Reading BuddiesReading Buddies is a new program that matches teens in 7th through 12th grades with young readers in our Garfield Gecko Club. Once a week on Thursdays teens from our middle and high school programs visit Garfield Gecko Club to read with students there. The older students help not only with the reading but also leading reading assessments for the children to help instructors keep on top of reading levels and where students need help. The children at the Gecko Club really look forward to the time spent with the older kids, and many have formed special bonds. It’s been a win-win situation on both sides. The youngsters get help reading and the older kids get to volunteer, building a stronger community.
