IMPORTANT COVID-19 INFORMATION

On the subject of WGS and on the issues being experienced by users, specifically on queuing times which is recognised by all as being unacceptable. The FA recognise that the ageing system is dying and any improvements that can be made are being made; however these are nothing more than ‘papering over the cracks’ and not ideal. The FA meeting attended by the Chairman and Vice Chairman were assured that the new (PPF) system will be fully functional in time for the 2021/2022 season. As regards playing football at Step 5 and Step 6, The FA clarified a number of matters concerning the Covid-19 situation and the legislation and agreements made between the Government and The FA. These are to ensure that we can continue to play football at our level, and that spectators may still be permitted to attend (under strict guidelines). Failure to adhere to these guidelines could result in this arrangement reverting to Phase 1 of Return to Football (spectators limited to 150) or the arrangement being terminated. The new legislation, as of Monday 14th September, requires no more than 6 people to be together, either indoors or outdoors. Whilst this does not apply to sports gatherings (players coaches etc) it does apply to spectators at a football match. Therefore only 6 people may stand or sit together and there must be a clear distance (2m) between them and the next group of 6 or less. Collective spacing of people leaning on the barriers around the ground, is a breach of the legislation and may result in action taken against the individuals and the club. Only those who have been in close contact with a person who subsequently tests positive for Covid19, will need to self-isolate and any decision as such, will be given by NHS Track and Trace who will contact whom they think necessary. Playing on the pitch is NOT classed as close contact but dugouts, changing rooms transport facilities, players huddling together, club house facilities may all provide the opportunity for close contact, and infection, to occur. It is recommended that substitutes, physios, coaches should wear face coverings when seated during the match. Should 3-4 players travel together in a car then it should always be the same 3-4 players and they must wear face coverings. Managers are responsible for controlling players on the pitch and must not allow group huddles or group goal celebrations, any reported breaches will be investigated and if proven sanctions will be applied. Managers are also responsible for the behaviour of their support team in the dugout. Due to the lack of spectator football at higher levels, we have seen a greater number of spectators at venues where we have our teams playing, which is good news for club revenue. Although clubs have provided their individual risk assessments, it is evident that many clubs have not changed their infrastructure to enable them to cope with the additional spectators (such as increasing the number of stewards). This has led to mass gatherings of spectators and inappropriate drinking around grounds. In view of the above, all Leagues have now been instructed to monitor the activities of clubs, and to take the appropriate action, to ensure that the government are not pressurised into revoking the agreement with the FA and withdraw the allowance of spectators and/or football at this level. The League and The FA CAN and WILL, where it is evidenced that significant breaches have been or are occurring, suspend the fixtures for a club (or clubs) or reduce the number of spectators permitted, back to phase 1 of the agreement (150 spectators) until the League/The FA are satisfied that the appropriate guidelines are being adhered to. League monitors are attending matches and are required to submit a Covid compliance report (to the league’s Covid Coordinator) upon which decisions are made and appropriate sanctions may be applied. For us all to be able to enjoy football again, in a viable manner, it is vitally important that we ALL comply with The FA and Government guidelines. The League will take all the necessary action to ensure that we do not give any cause for a very few to deny the rest the opportunities that have been given to us. The League Officers recognise that it is harder for some than others but please let us know of any problems BEFORE and not after they arise. Do not rely on email alone, it is advisable that you follow up your email with a phone call to the appropriate League Officer.

MIDWEEK MATCH REPORTS

Tuesday 15 September Sydenhams League Cup 1st Round HYTHE & DIBDEN 1-1 NEWPORT IOW TWO Division 1 clubs met in the League Cup on a warm evening at Clayfields writes Gary Day. Hythe had much the better of the first half and created many opportunities. However, it was Newport that went into the interval with the lead. Lynch was proving a handful for the Port defence, forcing Streeter to a near post save early on and had another effort that hit the side netting. Lynch turned provider but Prentice just couldn’t get a decent connection with his head when favourably placed and another Hythe chance went begging. Prentice and Lynch had further chances as the game moved on but a Hythe goal wasn’t forthcoming. On the other hand, Newport had attacked rarely and once moved into a dangerous position with a slick passing move involving Browne and Kelly but Craig was well closed by Newton. A goal for the Islanders occurred when Craig was tripped just inside the Hythe box and KELLY sent Cotton the wrong way from the spot. That goal came in the 41st minute and with half-time looming, Kelly received a knock down and had a decent chance to score his second goal but drove over. HT 0-1. The second half was well contested and much more even as Crooks fired across the Port goal, but a Hythe equaliser did materialise on the hour mark. A defender failed to cut out a low ball and it ran on to sub DARK who took a touch and buried a low shot. Port’s Hughes forced Cotton to a smart tip over whilst Craig hit the bar following a Kelly lay off. Cotton saved well from a Younie cross late on and Hythe’s Crooks had a shot that drifted wide. FT 1-1. So, on to penalties. Four of the first eight kicks were unsuccessful but then came a good spell of conversions. We were deep into the ‘non takers’ and Streeter got down to save Newton’s kick quite comfortably and Port’s last selected player Hughes stepped up to shoot firmly home and put his side through. This left Hythe to reflect upon how they failed to put the game out of Port’s reach in the first half.



Tuesday 15 September Sydenhams League Cup 2nd Round LAVERSTOCK & FORD 0-4 BLACKFIELD & LANGLEY FOUR goals in almost as many minutes at the end of the game settled what had been a close encounter that was a bit harsh in the end for the hosts writes Mike Robins. Goal chances were far and few between in the opening exchanges with the first real shot on eleven minutes

from Sami Makhloufi drifted wide of the mark, and a Cassius Newton strike from distance was turned away for a corner. Just after the midpoint of the half, Laverstock’s Chae Sykes turned his marker but the shot was low and just flashed wide of the upright, and on beating the offside trap moments later again failed to hit the target. Makhloufi, Nasim Meddah and River Smith created a good chance around the half hour mark but Tom

Roberts was alert to the danger. Neither keeper was really tested during the first half although in the latter stages, opportunities continued to be created. HT 0-0 The first goal chance in the second half came on 52 minutes when Pete Fletcher’s hanging cross was clutched off Sykes’ head by Blackfield keeper Joe Besant, and shortly before the hour mark a towering Newton header was somehow hacked off the goal line by a defender. The visiting centre half was called into action at the other end making a great tackle to thwart Sykes’ progress on the Clubhouse goal. With the dreaded penalties looming on the horizon, a strike from Laverstock’s Archie Lovegrove wide on the dugout side nearly caught everyone out, before dropping onto the net with Besant well beaten. Blackfield had been comfortable on the ball all evening but lacked that final ball until, in the 84th minute MAKHLOUFI broke the deadlock finding the bottom right hand corner after a surging run into the penalty area. With a couple of minutes remaining MEDDAH doubled the lead from a similar position having broken through a tightly packed penalty area, and to rub salt into the wound MAKHLOUFI added his second and Blackfield’s third almost straight from the resumption. With people already drifting away, SMITH then sealed the win in added on time. FT 0-4 Tuesday 15 September Sydenhams League Cup 1st Round ANDOVER TOWN 2-2 BOURNEMOUTH [Andover won 5-4 on penalties] TOWN produced a greatly improved display from their defeat at the weekend and perhaps just shaded the game overall, writes John Gorman, but it was heartbreak for Bournemouth as they exited a second Competition on penalties in this still fledgling season. The visitors started the better and it was against the run of play when the home side took the lead after just seven minutes. There seemed little danger as Ben EMANS cut in from the right but his low shot went across goalkeeper Kacper Kowalczyk and inside the far post. Andover’s Tom Pattison saw a shot turned round the post and at the other end a long run by Niall Johnston won a corner that was well cleared by goalkeeper Dease Kerrison before the visitors Ethan Fishlock curled an effort just past the far post. Pattison sent Josh Bertie clear but the shot was blocked and Andover escaped when defender and goalkeeper left the ball to each other with Kerrison recovering in time to deny Jamie Wilson. Wilson was a threat on both flanks and midway through the half his low cross caused some confusion in the area and Martin WARREN stabbed the ball home at the second attempt to bring the scores level. Andover rather wasted a free kick – it



looked like a training ground move that did not work – but threatened again when the pace of Josh Hewson took him clear on the left but the angle was too narrow and his shot was saved at the expense of a corner. Emans was only narrowly wide with a repeat of his earlier effort and the last action of the half saw a thirty yard piledriver from Bournemouth’s Liam House rebound back off the crossbar with the keeper well beaten. HT 1-1 On the re-start Hewson showed his pace again but was foiled by Kowalczyk quickly narrowing the angle. A long run by Poppies’ Jamie Trimble ended with him being felled on the corner of the area but the free kick came to nothing and the first, and only, caution of the evening fell to Bournemouth’s Aaron Matthews for a challenge on the touchline, and to add insult to injury he was then promptly substituted. Andover were beginning to dominate proceedings with Emans denied by a fine save and Bertie’s pleas for a penalty when going down in the area falling on deaf ears. Kowalczyk was at full stretch to push away a Pattison shot but was rescued by his defence when he came and did not reach a cross with the ball eventually being cleared from almost under the bar. With Kerrison a virtual spectator, Andover’s persistence and pressure was rewarded with some ten minutes remaining as Josh BERTIE slotted Pattison’s through ball past the advancing goalkeeper. In a sense Andover virtually declared at that point with the substitution of their front three of Emans, Bertie and Hewson – the latter would surely be more effective in a central role – raising thoughts of the affect any possible penalty shoot-out. That possibility became reality two minutes from time when the home defence failed to deal with a bouncing ball and Jamie WILSON levelled the scores and after Bournemouth had survived two corners in quick succession the referee signalled the end of the ninety minutes. FT 2-2 Bournemouth went first in the penalty shoot-out and both sides scored four out of four with neither goalkeeper touching the ball before Wilson went against the norm by attempting to chip the keeper as he dived only for the ball to strike the crossbar. Hard on the Poppies skipper who had enjoyed a fine evening but it was also apt that Owen Trapnell, one of the heartbeats of the Andover side, scored penalty number five to send the home side in to Round Two and a trip to East Cowes Vics. A very enjoyable game and mention of referee Skeates. His first game at this level and an assured performance which was accepted throughout by the players of both sides – no niggle, no dissent. It can be done. Wednesday 15 September Sydenhams League Cup 1st Round WHITCHURCH UNITED 3-1 PORTLAND UNITED A League Cup encounter took Portland on a very long midweek trip from Dorset to North Hampshire. It was an idyllic evening and a keen match was anticipated at Longmeadow. But the game will be more recalled because of a serious injury to a home player. Whitchurch had an early chance with Hawkes heading just over the bar but Portland, beaten 8-1 last time out, got forward with a good Morris run at the home defence but his firmly driven ball into the middle was pushed away by Jamboys keeper Szymaniak for a corner. It was from that flag-kick, taken by Panesar-Dower that Ryan McKECHNIE netted with a firm well placed header. Szymaniak had to be alert to parry a Morris effort and another chance for the visitors saw Batista head off target following a free-kick. When Hawkes chased a through pass he went down heavily as Portland keeper Lucas raced out to kick clear. It was immediately evident to the players that Hawkes had received a broken ankle. It was a fair challenge and therefore an accidental occurrence. The player was made as comfortable as possible until an ambulance arrived. Twenty-nine minutes had been played at that point and after the vehicle had left the pitch, following a short warm-up, the game resumed after a thirty-eight-minute delay. Morris was causing further problems to the home defence but his shot was at Szymaniak. Church got forward and Thompson worked a shooting chance that cannoned off Lucas’ legs. The home side levelled five minutes before half-time with an excellent finish by Ryan LONG from over 20-yards out. HT 1-1 and sensibly, a five-minute break was taken on the pitch before resumption.



Portland striker Whyton hit a sweet edge of the box effort that was held by the diving Szymaniak and the keeper also did well to deflect away a McKechnie cross despite being under pressure from two attackers. Portland were getting forward but were rather disappointing in terms of creation. Whitchurch edged in front when Bishop got down the left and pulled the ball back to Aaron RANDALL who from around the left apex, fired a lovely shot that found the far corner. Buoyed by that fine effort Whitchurch looked for more with Bishop shooting narrowly over and Beattie got in before Lucas and the ball struck the crossbar. Morris continued to be troublesome to the home defence but the confident keeping of Szymaniak continued as he got down well to hold his dangerous well driven cross. Steel, for the home side, got up to head a Bishop corner but it went wide. It was getting late and the home side were managing the game well to hold on to their slender lead. It wasn’t quite so slender deep in stoppage time as a rather tired loose pass by a Portland defender at half-way presented the ball to George BISHOP who ran clear, dribbled past the keeper, rolled it home and confirmed his side’s place in the next round. FT: 3-1. It was a decent game but, without a doubt, the over-riding consideration must be given to Matt Hawkes, whom we hope makes a full recovery soon. Wednesday 15 September Sydenhams League Cup 2nd Round FAWLEY 2-3 FOLLAND SPORTS EARLY breakthrough for the visitors tonight saw Follands on their way to a best of five win over their hosts. A Josh BALL header from ten yards after a well delivered cross sending them on their way. The Planemakers’ wide men Clayd Roach and Kejuan Barrow were particularly pleasing on the eye and have the ability to create openings when least expected, however that needs to be quantified by a team that lost their discipline somewhat alarmingly- with eight yellow cards on the evening, two for sin bin offences. Extraordinary. One of the first cautions was for a silly foul conceded by the Planemakers’ captain Jake Bartlett bringing down Tom Mundy wide but near the edge of the penalty area, nothing came from the free kick. Fawley squandered a couple of good chances to draw level with Tom Rafferty unlucky to see his effort cleared off the line, and Peter Southwick who had a free header that was easily claimed by Edas Juskelis.

At the other end a Roach free kick from some 30 yards drew a fine save from Joe Coombes, pushing the ball over the bar. Parity was restored on 38 minutes however, when between them the Follands goalkeeper and defence fluffed their lines and left Sam BOON with a simple tap in from close range. It wasn’t long though before Follands drew ahead again. Coombes upended a Follands striker and ROACH crashed home the resulting penalty. HT 1-2

The second half grew more heated in contrast to the chill in the air around the pitch with both sides looking for a goal Fawley’s Dylan Knight had a great chance denied by a well-timed challenge whilst both Roach and Barrow missed chances to extend the lead for the visitors, this did happen around the hour mark when Liam ATTRILL volleyed home a corner from around five yards out. Fawley captain RAFFERTY clawed the hosts back into contention when his shot somehow went through Juskelis from twelve yards to set up a tense final 20 minutes, during which time Fawley looked to have a reasonable shout for a penalty turned away, and in the dying minutes a left foot strike from sub Jack Stuttard hit the base of the post at the top of the ground only to see it bounce back into play. FT 2-3



MIDWEEK ROUND UP

A midweek devoted entirely to the League Cup, a casualty of the early finish last season, with Round One being completed and a large part of Round Two also played. Six matches in Round One on Tuesday with the pick of them at AFC Portchester where an attendance approaching 200 saw near neighbours Horndean victorious by the odd goal in five with goals from Connor Duffin, Ben Anderson and Zac Brownlie – the home side goals coming from Joe Johnson and Craig Harding. There were two more all-Premier Division clashes with Hamworthy United making the long haul to Alresford and returning home four goals to the good with Cameron Munn (2) and James King on the score sheet along with an own goal. A fair game at the Sports Ground as well where Baffins Milton Rovers kept their hands on the Trophy with a hard fought 4-3 win over Lymington. James Cowan (2), Brandon Miller and Callum Dart on the mark for the holders with Noah Pearce, Conrad Churchill and Sam House the home scorers. Division One triumphed over the Premier Division at the Portway but only after a penalty shoot-out. Andover Town were leading Bournemouth by two goals (Ben Emans and Josh Bertie) to one from Martin Warren with two minutes to go when skipper Jamie Wilson gave the Poppies a lifeline, but the dreaded shoot out finished five four in the home side’s favour. A longer shoot out at Hythe in the all Division One meeting between Hythe & Dibden and Newport. Goals from Mig Dark and Connor Kelly left the scores level after ninety minutes before the Islanders won through 9-8 in the sudden death decider. On the Island it was goalless between Cowes Sports and Brockenhurst with the Badgers winning 4-2 on penalties before heading to the Ferry. In the Second Round ties two sides scored six with pride of place going to Bemerton Heath Harlequins who inflicted a 6-1 defeat of Premier Division Shaftesbury Town. Justin Bennett, inevitably, led the way with two and Brandon Mundy, Gary Peel, Danny Finnigan and Cameron Roach added one apiece with Aaron Lane-Leney getting the consolation for the visitors. The other six shooters were Alton Town who achieved the same result against Totton & Eling. Two goals apiece for Harry Rolfe and George Bowerman with Richie Hunter and a Phil Moore penalty completing the half dozen. Danny Clarke claimed the Millers’ goal and in the three matches they have played to date this season, Alton have amassed fifteen goals. Max Wilcock scored the only goal as Christchurch defeated Fareham Town at Cams Alders and Bashley proved too strong for Andover New Street in the Forest. It was” Harrys Game” again with Harry Morgan scoring two and Harry McGrath one with the fourth goal coming from debutant Jean-Pierre Alexander. Shane Lock with the New Street goal. Downton’s difficult start to the season continued with a home loss to New Milton with Lee Vint’s goal no more than a consolation when set against strikes from Charlie Turner, Chris Long and Tyrrell Sampson. Laverstock & Ford held Blackfield & Langley to a “goalless draw” for eighty two minutes only for the visitors to score four times in the final eight minutes courtesy of Sami Makhloufi (2), Nassim Meddah and River Smith. Penalties were needed at Love Lane where Petersfield and Verwood failed to trouble the scorers in the ninety minutes with the visitors proving the better from the spot, converting four to the home side’s two, finally on Tuesday two more wins for Division One over the Premier Division. Romsey Town journeyed to Fleet Town and won by the odd goal in three – Jack Odam and Ben Rowthorn against Mal Thomas- while goals from James Franklyn, Josh Hazell and Sonny Harnett-Balkwill gave US Portsmouth a comfortable victory over Tadley Calleva at Burnaby Road. On Wednesday Division One came out on top against the Premier Division at Whitchurch in a game marred by a serious injury to the home side’s Matt Hawkes that delayed proceedings for thirty minutes, and we wish him well for a full and speedy recovery. Portland took an early lead through Ryan McKechnie but a Ryan Long equaliser before the break and further goals from Aaron Randall and George Bishop saw the home side in to the next round. NEWPORT, THE WESSEX LEAGUE AND BEYOND Prior to the formation of the Wessex League Newport had been a leading light in Hampshire football over many years. They have been Hampshire League Champions on eleven occasions and won the Senior Cup on one fewer occasion, doing the double in seasons 1979/80 and 1980/81. In 1985/86 they finished seventh on the Hampshire League – won by East Cowes Vics ahead of AFC Totton and Eastleigh and became a founder member of the Wessex League the following season, At that time they were still playing at Church Litten and staged the second Wessex League Cup Final and the first to be played over one leg on a neutral ground. In the first four seasons of the Wessex League they proved a dominant force, finishing fourth twice, third and finally second, behind Romsey, and were promoted to the Southern League South joining such as Gosport Borough, Salisbury, Andover and Fareham Town. They finished 14th in that year and stayed in the same Division for nine seasons with a best finish of fourth place, which they achieved no fewer than three times. In 1999-2000 they were moved to the Southern League East, with only Bashley and Fleet remotely near in geographical terms and the likes of Spalding, Corby and Stamford way over the far horizon. Third place in that season was followed by finishing as Champions next time round, four points clear of Chelmsford. This ensured promotion to the Premier Division, the highest level on the football ladder the Club had reached, but it was to be only for one season as they finished 19th out of twenty two and the bottom four Clubs, including Salisbury who finished eighteen points adrift of the Club above them were relegated. This meant a return to the South and West Division for two seasons, both of which were something of a struggle, as the Club finished in sixteenth and nineteenth place respectively.

Then the FA struck again by transferring the Club to the Isthmian League with, once again, only Fleet Town and Bashley being even remotely local with the League based mainly in and around London. This was to last for two seasons and without doubt added to the Club’s ever growing financial problems and after finishing 19th and 22nd they returned to the happier pastures, in most respects, of the Southern League South and West. Their first season back, with such as Thatcham, Andover and Winchester for company, saw them finish twentieth out of twenty two as Bashley took the League

Title, But if that was bad the following season was truly a season horribilis. The Club gained only eleven points, conceded 143 goals and finished 21 points adrift in last place in the table. Relegation to the Wessex League followed with ten consecutive seasons in the Premier Division – a best placing of fourth in 2013/14 – before relegation to Division One, the lowest level at which the Club had played since their Hampshire League days. Add to this the long-running problems with the St. Georges Ground finally coming to a head, it was, and is, a miserable time for the Club with the proposed new ground project suffering numerous delays, causing the Club to ground share at East Cowes Vics and ensure their continuing presence in the League to the relief of all. During this period the Club entered all three FA Competitions at various times with the best results in each as follows:- FA CUP – 1st Round Proper in 1994/95 and 1995/96 losing to Aylesbury United and Enfield respectively – the latter after a replay. FA Trophy – 4th Round 1999/00 Lost to Heybridge Swifts from Essex. FA Vase – 5th Round 2012/13 Lost in a replay to Ascot United with both games being played at Ascot, there were 5th Round defeats against Bamber Bridge in 1991/92 on their travels and at Banstead Athletic the next season. Despite all this a hard core of volunteers has kept the Club going under a seemingly never ending succession of Chairmen and with this season finally under way promotion back to the Premier Division would, in the context of everything, be a huge step.

More sad news from Bemerton Heath Harlequins I am sorry to report. We heard on Friday that Andy Hardwick passed away. On behalf of the League our thoughts and sincere condolences go out to family friends at this sad time. Andy left his role as Secretary with the club just sixteen months ago after some 34 years in that position, seven of which were for the Youth Section. A great club man and he also helped the League acting as a Mentor for new Secretaries in the past. No details are yet available for the Funeral arrangements.

LEAGUE NEWS

The League Chairman has given notice of a 'ZOOM' meeting to be held on the morning of Sunday 27th September 2020 commencing at 10.30 am. It is requested please that this be attended by both the Club Chairman and the COVID Officer of all our member clubs. Clubs have been requested to ensure that contact details for the Chairman and Covid Officer have been

submitted to the League Secretary by 17:00 on Sunday 20th September. It would seem a reminder is required to some of our clubs, in that It is a league requirement that clubs must produce a programme for each home game in the League, League Cup, FA Cup, FA Vase and County Senior Cup. Clubs can choose to either print their programme or have an online version but may not alternate. Please remember that all online programmes must be submitted to Mike Robins the League Media Officer at [email protected] 24 hours prior to kick-off, and not expect him to visit a club website to collect it. The programme competition will run again this season, clubs will be advised of two dates in the season when printed programmes are to be submitted postally to an address as will be notified. We want to make an appeal to all players, officials and supporters of clubs in our League concerning the need to remain Covid vigilant. Our clubs, and the hard working volunteers at them, have made great efforts to ensure games are staged in a safe manner for both participants and spectators, but there remain concerns that not all have followed all the guidance, and further we are concerned to see some players not following the rules – which are for their own safety. The agreement negotiated between the FA and the Department for Culture Media and Sport means that the game of football is not considered a “close contact” by the social distancing regulations, as long as Clubs continue to fully implement their risk assessments. A failure to implement these is likely to result in matches being postponed and players and spectators self-isolating, in line with the current NHS Test and Trace guidance. Teams must follow the advice of the home sides Risk Assessment and MUST NOT for example exceed the maximum number of players and support staff that enter changing rooms at any given time, the assessments should allow for a safe number based on the size of rooms and the 1 meter plus rule. If players HAVE to car-share they should do so with the same individuals each and every time. Where minibuses are used, everyone should wear a face mask and use hand sanitiser before and after entry. Extra seating in technical areas should be provided to ensure the occupants remain at a safe distance from each other and spectators. Celebrations on the pitch, together with team group huddles and travelling to games without taking the proper precautions have been seen in person and on social media- and MUST STOP immediately. Spectators must respect the Rule of Six and maintain social distancing at all times, BOTH inside and outside the clubhouse. It is vitally important to stress that “sport being exempt from the regulations” refers ONLY to whilst actually participating in the match, on the field of play – Players are NOT exempt from anything before or after matches! As Covid-19 restrictions around the country look to be becoming tighter, the footballing authorities are becoming increasingly aware of instances where players and spectators are stretching or even ignoring the guidance. Whilst we (the League) do not have the power of enforcement, the Police do, and have the power to fine individuals for persistent breaches of the guidance. Local councils may also be given extra powers to stop events and shut down parks if they are concerned about threats to public safety. We urge ALL Players, Officials, Volunteers and Supporters to maintain their efforts, check and follow the guidance and risk assessments, and above all STAY VIGILANT – Not just for football matches to safely continue, but for the health of ALL the football family.




Further to this, we have also learned that of a situation that occurred during a recent fixture, due to non-compliance of social distancing by some spectators, a message was conveyed over the club’s PA system that the game would be abandoned. Clubs do not have authority to abandon matches. Therefore clubs are hereby reminded that when spectators within your ground do not follow social distancing guidelines you should use your PA and or stewards to remind spectators to observe social distancing. If spectators refuse to leave the ground, convey a message to the referee via his/her assistants to pause the game until the situation is sorted. Effective stewarding should be used and a club must make every effort in controlling the behaviour of spectators within their ground. Any club that believes it is not possible to control their spectators with the stewards they have must increase the number of stewards or give serious consideration to reducing the number of spectators they are able to manage. The latest legislation on people not observing social distancing guidelines advises that individuals and groups are liable to be fined. The League believes that all our clubs have worked hard in meeting the Government and FA guidelines so that spectators are permitted to watch football at our grounds. It is recognised that Risk Assessments will differ from club to club, depending on their individual circumstances. The League would urge you all to share best practice with each other, be prepared to receive suggestions and to pass them to others. We (the League) have been advised by The FA to take any action necessary to ensure that all concerned comply with legislation to prevent playing fixtures behind closed doors. We are all experiencing a difficult journey and are learning as we go.

WEEKEND MATCH REPORTS

Saturday 19 September Premier Division BOURNEMOUTH 1-2 FAREHAM TOWN PLEASANT enough afternoon but the last ten minutes of an otherwise run of the mill tussle were not so. With Bournemouth attacking the Winton End there were not very many goal chances in the opening period. Fareham had a couple of chances that tested Kacper Kowalczyk with the pace of the wide men giving the Poppies’ defence some difficulties writes Mike Robins. The first real chance went the visitors’ way on 22 minutes. A mis-timed clearance saw the ball come to Casey Bartlett-Scott; his touch found striker Josh Benfield who shot on the turn but the ball flashed just wide of the mark. The Bournemouth keeper again failed to find one if his own team a few minutes later with the ball falling nicely for Connor Messingbird but the chance went begging. Just after the half hour mark it was the turn of the visitors to fail to deal with the ball Archie Wilcox’s back pass was scrambled away by keeper Dan Kempson, who was some way out of his goal- for a throw in. Charlie Cooper then spurned a chance before, in the dying minutes of the half, a superb shot from Josh Benfield drew a great save from Kowalczyk. It was fair to say that Fareham were in the driving seat- and had a string of corners as the half drew to a close. HT 0-0 Poppies had a decent spell after the resumption despite Wilcox seeing his effort hit the upright and bouncing to safety around 56 minutes in and a Bartlett-Scott free kick cleared the bar as we entered the final 20 minutes of the game. In the 73rd minute sub Callum BENFIELD applied the finishing touch in a crowded area after Kowalczyk had made a fine save. The ball was hacked off the line and despite protestations that the ball had not in fact crossed the line the goal was awarded. VAR would perhaps have decided otherwise, we’ll never know. After this piece of controversy, Fareham doubled their lead from a 78th minute penalty converted by WILCOX, I am uncertain as to how that came about as my view was obstructed by the number of players in the area. With around four minutes left Jamie WILSON pulled one back for the hosts with the visiting defence caught out by not clearing their lines by calmly striking home from around five yards. Almost immediately an incident out near the corner flag at the other end caused around 18 of the players to exchange their views, with Bournemouth trying to quicken the game and grab an equaliser; from my viewpoint at least one player was pushed to the ground and for some reason the culprits were not cautioned and it was Bournemouth who ended with ten men. FT 1-2 Saturday 19 September Buildbase FA Vase 1st Qualifying Round FLEET TOWN 3-1 NEWENT TOWN Newent is in the Forest of Dean and their Football Club is a Club on the up. They are in their fourth season in the Hellenic League, having moved up from Gloucestershire Football, and this is their second season in the Vase and just their third game in the Competition overall. They compete in Division One West of the Hellenic League, one step below their hosts, and are so neatly placed geographically that hardly any journey exceeds twenty five miles so the one hundred mile trip to North Hampshire was a change, a day out and a chance to test themselves against higher opposition. Given all that the last thing you need is a bad start to the game but that is exactly what happened inside three minutes. They gave the ball away with an ambitious cross field pass, Tyler Watts made ground on the right and full back Mal THOMAS was at the far post go convert the low cross. Although Newent’s Jacob Nutting was too high with a header Fleet were very much on top going down the slope and Mal Thomas had a shot saved at full stretch by keeper Alex Goode.



The home side were caught offside twice in quick succession and were also guilty of overhitting their crosses but on the quarter of an hour mark the lead was doubled. The ball was worked from left to right across the edge of the area until Leo DECARBO found himself in space and his drive from 20 yards flew past Goode. The visitors escaped when they lost the ball trying to play it out from their own goal line but did take play to the other end only for Jordan Cooper to lack support and then see a shot blocked. Newent showed some neat passing but were too often second best in midfield and Goode was in action again, saving twice from Dan Bone. Cooper and Tom Boyle were frequently outnumbered when they went forward and the latter was inches offside when fastening on to a quickly taken free kick. Newent’s Richard Prictor was rightly cautioned for a challenge but all could have done without the unedifying sight of half the home team surrounding the Official demanding a red card. Bone was too high with a volley and Wensley should have perhaps made better contact in the six yard box from a corner and the home side finished the half very much on top with Goode again denying Bone twice in quick succession, the second time a brave reflex save. HT 2-0 Newent now had the slope in their favour but could not afford to concede another early goal and in fact did just the opposite, scoring themselves inside two minutes. The home defence seemed to still be in halftime mode as Pat Gibbs pulled the ball back from the bye line to give BOYLE the easiest of finishes. The home side’s response was immediate with Bone guilty of a miss from close range and then twice in as many minutes there was indecision between Harry Nash in the home goal and his defenders with the ball being scrambled clear. Rowan Sharratt, very clever in the Fleet midfield, saw a cross almost turned past Goode by one of his own defenders before a strange incident. The referee allowed play to go on with a player lying on the ground injured before stopping play with Fleet attacking in the opposition area. The injury turned out to be a “non-injury” and in the ensuing confusion there were cautions for a Newent player and a home official. Fleet then surprisingly, at least to the writer replaced both Sharratt and Watts. Cooper, starting from a suspiciously looking offside position, was forced wide and could only find the side netting. Goode saved well from Bone, injuring himself in the process, and with time running out the game had lost its shape and THOMAS went unchallenged from the halfway line to slot the ball past Goode to ensure it was game over. A Newent substitute came on in stoppage time and was promptly cautioned for preventing a free kick being taken –an expensive couple of minutes. The usual six extra minutes and in the end a fair result, Fleet were more incisive and whilst one could understand Newent leaning towards defence ,the lack of support to the front two was part of their undoing. A nice afternoon in the sunshine and good wishes to them for the rest of their season. FT 3-1

This week we’ll start in Dorset, and sad news in that Corfe Castle have pulled out of the Dorset Premier League citing as the main cause issues over the risks with the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic that have beset the club this Summer. Westland Sports top the table after a 5-0 win over basement side Wareham Rangers with Merley second on goal difference. Hamworthy were held two each at Magna Road by Portland’s second team. The biggest win of the day came at Holt where Bournemouth Sports moved off bottom spot with an emphatic 5-1 win over the Bulls. Now for the results from yesterday and the table. In the Hampshire Premier League Infinity, are four points clear and although having played more than their nearest rivals were held to a one all draw by lowly Chamberlayne whilst Paulsgrove’s game was called off due to player Josh Miroy suffering a heart attack whilst playing the week before, we extend our thoughts and prayers to family and friends for a speedy recovery. Lyndhurst seem to be finding life difficult after their promotion and went down 6-0 at Fleetlands yesterday. Bush Hill played their first game at the home of former members Solent University FC and wrapped up a 3-0 win over Locks Heath. In Division 1 Moneyfields Reserves are top of the tree with a maximum 12 points from their games, and defeated AFC Netley 5-3 yesterday

The chance to leap over them was missed by Salisbury who also lost on the road, 7-2 at AFC Stoneham. The only other league game in this Division was at Hamworthy United where the Hammers beat Romsey 5-2.

We turn finally to the Southern League who started their League programme yesterday. Opening day in the Premier Division South saw Tiverton Town gaining the points at Ladysmead against Wimborne Town with a 5-0 win. Alex Fletcher hit a hat trick with Dan Hayfield and Jordan Bastin also finding the net. Gosport Borough gained a point in a goalless draw at Chesham United, whilst Poole Town were a best of three winner against Beaconsfield Town. Bailey Rowe and Tony Lee with the Dolphins goals. Weston-Super-Mare collected the points with a 3-1 success at the Avenue Stadium against Dorchester Town, Rubin Wilson having given the Magpies an early lead. Both these two are in action at Cowes and Christchurch respectively in the Emirates FA Cup this coming week In Wiltshire Salisbury shared the points and four goals with Hendon, thanks to a Marvin Brooks goal and an OG. In Division One South, Basingstoke Town came from three down to win at Slimbridge 6-3. George Hallahan and McKoy Palmer both hit doubles. George and Dylan Ive also on target. In contrast Thatcham Town, who looked odds on champions before lockdown, couldn`t manage a goal at home to Paulton Rovers as the match ended in stalemate. Cinderford Town won 2-1 at home against Moneyfields, Zac Drew, getting them both, George Barker replied. Evesham United went down to a 3-0 home defeat against Sholing. Claudio Herbert, Dan Mason and Stuart Green the marksmen. Tyrrell Mitford gave his new side the lead right on half-time at Melksham Town. Phil Ormerod equalised after the break only for Jamie Barron to win it for Winchester City. Barnstaple Town`s trip to AFC Totton ended in a 3-0 loss Jack Masterton, Mitchell Byrne and Craig Feeney on the scoresheet.

WEEK 3 ROUND UP

The FA Vase attracted most of the attention but there were five League Matches played, two in the Premier Division and three in Division One. In the top flight Horndean’s unbeaten start ended abruptly with a 3-0 defeat at Christchurch -two goals for Ash Pope and one for Mickey Finch – while a few miles away Fareham beat Bournemouth by the odd goal in three, Callum Benfield and Archie Wilcox scoring for the victors and Jamie Wilson replying for the Poppies. Horndean and Fareham now top the table with nine points apiece with the first named just edging the goal difference, writes John Gorman. The meeting of two of the season’s leading sides to date in Division One ended in an emphatic 5-1 victory for Laverstock & Ford over Alton. Russell Jones, always a contender for any Golden Boot Award, scored a hat trick with further goals from Archie Lovegrove and Dom Jackson. Phil Moore getting the Brewers consolation. Totton & Eling scored first at the Portway through Ryan Lomax but were then “joshed” as goals from Josh Hewson and Josh Bertie gave Andover Town the points. In the final game Whitchurch could not build on their midweek League Cup win over Portland, going down 2-0 at home to Petersfield for the Rams’ second away win in a row with goals from Jordan Sullivan and Jake Alford. The Vase started on Friday evening with seven goals at Fawley as Ringwood won 4-3 with goals from Ryan Osman, Callum Williams, Ryan Hamm and Sammy Brown. Declan Hartigan with two and one from Tom Rafferty for the Oilers. Continuing with the all-Wessex games on Saturday Eddie Perrett and Justin Bennett gave Bemerton Heath a two goal lead at the break at Portchester but Lee Wort (2) and Joe Johnson turned it round in the second half to complete a sad off-the -field week for the Salisbury Club. Daryll Phillips and Cal Laycock ensured that Alresford and Stoneham finished one all at Arlebury Park before the visitors came out on top in the penalty shoot-out and penalties were also needed at Baffins Milton Rovers where again it was the visitors who won through. Tommy Scutt and Sam Emeney scored for Baffins with Conor Whiteley getting both goals for Bashley. Lymington continued their fine start to the season with a three goal win at Amesbury courtesy of Craig McAllister, Conrad Churchill and Sam House while on the other foot Portland’s problems show no sign of improving with Hamble Club scoring four times without reply in Dorset. Brendon Chebby (2), Mackenzie Gange and Ryan Wilkins completing a bad week for the Blues. Follands went down by the only goal of the game at Blackfield, scored by River Smith but there were no goals at all at New Milton with the home side eventually defeating Andover New Street 6-5 on penalties. Based on last seasons form the last of these ties looked like a home win but not to be as goals from Callum Butler and Edgar Zanin gave Verwood a fine two nil success at Hythe & Dibden. Eight games against “foreign” opposition on the day -Newport entertain Calne Town today – and five successes for the Wessex League. Brockenhurst came from behind at Corsham, a Jude Nwachukwu penalty leaving the score at one all with the Badgers going through 6-5 from the spot and penalties also at Westwood Park where Aidan Redford and Alex Wright scored in Cowes Sports’ two all draw with Devizes. This time it was five four in the Wessex Side’s favour in the shoot-out. Mal Thomas hit two and Leo DeCarbo one as Fleet Town beat Newent Town from Gloucestershire 3-1 and in front of the largest crowd of the day Romsey routed Selsey 4-0. Some 250 people saw James Clifton (2), Keiran Hancock and Charlie Rattley score the goals that earned Romsey a home tie in the next round. Further north Tadley Calleva also scored four, with a hat trick from Josh Drew and an own goal proving too much for visitors Wallingford Town who could only manage one goal in reply. On the debit side Brandon Hayward gave East Cowes Vics the lead at Beatrice Avenue only for Western League Westbury United to score twice in the second half and Downton found Farnham Town to strong in Surrey, losing 4-2 with Lee Vint and Ben Smith on the scoresheet. Lastly another bad day for Shaftesbury as Badshot Lea returned to base with a 4-0 victory to their name.
