This is how the Hampshire League looked at the end of 1985/86. The formation of the Wessex League saw the First Division contribute some eleven teams with Bashley coming in from Division 2 together with Wellworthy Athletic and Bournemouth from Division 3. From outside the county set up, we saw Road Sea decide to take the drop from the Southern League Premier Division despite having facilities and a squad more than capable of retaining that status, after a meteoric rise from local football, as you will no doubt recall from Newsletter #46 last season. They finished 16th of 20 with 42 points from their 38 games and ended one point behind Basingstoke Town. Fareham Town with 37 points that season ended 19th. Thatcham Town elected to move after completing 1985/86 in the London Spartan League Premier Division. Here they finished 4th from 16. Collier Row topped the table that season with 51 points from 30 games, whilst our Berkshire friends acquired 41. Steyning Town had won Sussex County League Division 1 for the second year running, amassing 72 points both times from their 30 game schedule. In 1985/86 they only tasted defeat twice in the League. Elsewhere, in the world of football Everton won the Division 1 title, finishing nine points clear of Merseyside rivals Liverpool. Off the pitch Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher officially opened the M25 on October 29 1986, on the carriageway near Potters Bar. A noticeable arrival in the world of football saw Gerard Pique born on 2 February 1987. The Barcelona defender is arguably one of the best defenders in the world. In the world of entertainment Top Gun was released in May 1986 and was a massive commercial box office hit. Musical group Berlin won an Academy Award for the song Take My Breath Away. Still talking about music, Madonna’s True Blue was the best-selling album of 1986 with over 30 weeks in the chart, and featured Papa Don’t Preach on the track listing. On the small screen, animated Children’s TV series Fireman Sam debuted in 1987. Featuring the voice of John Alderton as a fireman in the fictitious Welsh rural village of Pontypandy (an amalgamation of two real places- Pontypridd and Tonypandy). So how did the opening season look at the end?

…and what happened to the teams subsequently. Still in the same place, Bournemouth- and they are the only team to have featured in the top flight of our league since conception. Bashley, Brockenhurst, Lymington Town and Horndean are the only other ones from 1986/87 currently in the Premier Division. Newport IOW, Romsey Town and United Services Portsmouth (in their Royal Navy guise) are currently in Division 1. Teams that have gone are Portals Athletic, the aforementioned Road Sea and Sholing Sports. Wellworthy Athletic merged with Lymington Town to become AFC Lymington. Who has moved the furthest away? The answer is Eastleigh- and they are in the National League and still play at a much changed Ten Acres site, now called the Silverlake Stadium. Havant Town and Waterlooville merged and have also tasted Step 1 football, back in 2018/19 and reached the 4th Round of the FA Cup in 2007/08 before a 5-2 defeat at Anfield at the hands of Liverpool. Last season they were in the Southern section of the National League. Steyning Town have also moved away, eventually returning to Sussex and were in Division 3 from 1997 to 2002, so that arguably would be the lowest rung of the ladder for our former clubs from the first season. Romsey Town also dropped to Hampshire League Division 2, twice- 1995/96 and 2003/04 before regaining their membership with us. Of the other four founders, AFC Totton spent three seasons in the Southern Premier dropping back in 2013/14 to the Southern section of the League and were FA Vase runners up in 2006/07 as recently reported in Newsletter #48 from last season. Bashley played in the Southern Premier Division for a second spell as recently as 2013/14. Newport IOW had just the one season in the Southern Premier- 2001/02 finishing 19th of 22 that season. Thatcham Town are currently in the Southern League South for a second spell and won the FA Vase as a Hellenic Premier side by one goal to nil over Stockton Town in 2017/18. Their manager at the time was Danny Robinson has recently joined Hungerford Town was formerly with Alresford Town. The start of the Wessex League certainly had understandable impact on the Hampshire League. It was intended to raise standards throughout the county, with in subsequent seasons the Hampshire League champions gaining promotion. East Cowes Victoria and BAT Sports in 1986/87 and 1988/89 respectively being early examples. But that, as they say, is a different story. The League Cup Final for the first season was decided over two legs- with Road Sea winning 3-1 on aggregate.

• Horndean 1 (Winzar) v Road Sea Southampton 1 (Earles)

• Road Sea Southampton 2 (Maskell, Pratt) v Horndean 0

EASTLEIGH 0 BASHLEY 1

One of Gary Day’s match reports from the first Wessex League season. It’s mid-April and the season is now at the ‘business end’ as Bashley made the journey to Eastleigh on Tuesday 14 April 1987.

Eastleigh: 1: Iain Watson, 2: Graham Prior, 3: Ian Knight, 4: Gary Payne, 5: Steve Blaxall, 6: Barry Joslin, 7: Dave Benfield, 8: Simon Preston, 9: Alfie Day, 10: Paul Bishop, 11: Mick Fredericks, 12: Mark Sanders (not used).

Bashley: 1: Clive Saunders, 2: Kevin Green, 3: Dave Jenman, 4: Terry Smith (sub: Mark Smith 82), 5: Peter Cox, 6: Stuart Pateman, 7: Joey Robinson, 8: Jimmy Sheppard, 9: Steve Slade, 10: Charlie Miles, 11: Derek Barnes

It wasn’t difficult to see why Bashley are pushing for the very first Wessex League title. They have flair up top and are also a workmanlike side, who close down quickly and stifle the opposition. These were strengths that were in abundance on their tricky trip to Eastleigh but their 26th minute lead was indeed a narrow one but was seldom under any serious threat. Bash hit the bar early on and Watson in the home goal was called upon too. The goal came when the home side had a chance to clear a hopeful cross into the box but instead it ran to Joey Robinson to strike a low shot home. Eastleigh tried hard but struggled to break down the visiting side their best effort being Payne’s 25-yard effort that moved in the air, but Saunders handled. Eastleigh made a concerted effort to level in the final ten minutes, but Bash didn’t get flustered, and defended like potential champions and held on to a vital win. The game was superbly officiated by Mr Findlay from Basingstoke. This win proved to be a significant one as, with rivals Road Sea on League Cup semi-final duty, Bashley took over the leadership of the Wessex League table:

1st: Bashley Played: 25; Pts: 57 2nd: Road Sea Played: 25; Pts: 55 3rd: AFC Totton Played: 23; Pts: 54

In Hindsight, all three challengers won home matches the next time out (18th April): Bash and Road Sea won 3-1 against Portsmouth RN and Eastleigh respectively and Totton defeated Newport by 2-0. 20th April – The three teams were soon in action again and more wins – Bash netted six against Sholing Sports (6-2) and Totton defeated Steyning Town 3-0. The only team on the road (or, more aptly, on the water) were Road Sea who won 2-0 against Newport. So, it was as you were. In the following midweek games, Road Sea won 2-1 at Sholing Sports and Totton 2-0 at Thatcham Town. Bashley however were defeated by a single goal at home to Newport. Bash were not in league action on the 25th (winning a Bournemouth Senior Cup semi-final game) and Road Sea took advantage by beating Steyning 2-0 at Marchwood but there was a slip-up for Totton at Testwood Park as they were defeated by mid-table Havant Town by 2-4, only their second league reverse of the season. The top of the table after matches played on this day were:

1st: Road Sea Played: 29; Pts: 67 … 3 left to play 2nd: AFC Totton Played: 27; Pts: 63 … 5 left to play 3rd: Bashley Played: 28; Pts: 63 ... 4 left to play

Of the Stags’ five games left, two were against their title rivals and it was a busy midweek for the title challenging sides: 27th April saw Bashley beat Thatcham Town 1-0, whilst on the next day AFC Totton won on their travels at Eastleigh, also by a one nil margin. Then a couple of days on (30th April), Bashley again won 1-0 this time against AFC Totton… not many goals two successes for the New Forest side. Road Sea were not in league action as they were booking their Russell-Cotes Cup final place. The results on Saturday 2nd May proved pivotal with defeats for both AFC Totton and Road Sea. The Stags were sunk 1-0 at Portsmouth RN whilst Road Sea went down 3-2 at Havant Town (who’d proved to be a difficult opponent for two of the challengers in this period). Bashley meanwhile, hit the summit with a 3-0 win at Portals Athletic.

1st: Bashley Played: 31; Pts: 72 2nd: Road Sea Played: 30; Pts: 67 3rd: AFC Totton Played: 30; Pts: 66

Into the final week of the inaugural Wessex League season and there were two ‘juicy’ fixtures on Wednesday 6th May. Road Sea thrashed AFC Totton 5-1 at Marchwood and did their job but it mattered not as a win for Bashley at Wellworthy would give them the first ever title and they duly achieved it with a 2-1 victory and celebrations for manager Dave Lennard, his assistant Chris Smith and the Bashley side. Let’s not forget that Bashley were a team playing Bournemouth League football only four years before and they upset the odds at that time and are the name that will always be at the very top of a Wessex League champions list (their name did, of course, feature on that list for the next two seasons too, but that is another story). For the sake of completeness, Bashley had finished their league matches but Road Sea and Totton still had to play their final fixtures on the Saturday (9th May). Road Sea caned Portsmouth RN 7-1 at Marchwood whilst there were no goals at the Ampress Sports Ground between Wellworthy Athletic and Totton. And so, the final placings 1st: Bashley Played: 32; Pts: 75 2nd: Road Sea Played: 32; Pts: 73 3rd: AFC Totton Played: 32; Pts: 67

Bashley had to wait a while to appear in the Bournemouth Senior Cup final and goals by Slade and Green produced a fine 2-1 win over Christchurch at Dean Court in a game played on Friday 22nd May. What a season for the men from the New Forest!

Results involving our League clubs only. Just seven of our teams entered the competition in the Preliminary Round stage with six drawn away from home. The longest journey was for Romsey who went to Wotton-under-Edge, then a member of the Gloucestershire County League, sadly they went down 3-1 but AFC Totton took revenge with a 2-0 win at Testwood Park in the next round. Some familiar names amongst the opposition in the competition, with Hungerford Town now the highest ranked team in that number. Given the final league rankings, perhaps a surprise that Road Sea didn’t get as far as perhaps they should going down at home against mid-table Lymington Town in a replay. High fliers Newport reached the 3rd Round before a 3-1 loss on the road at Bristol side, Mangotsfield United, whilst Steyning Town also got to this stage with a best of five win over Eastbourne Town, but a single goal put paid to their progress at Heybridge Swifts. Our team of the competition though was Havant Town who reached the last 16 after notching a 3-0 win over Banstead Athletic and then 2-0 victories over Dorking and Selby before going down at Westleigh Park by the odd goal of nine in a replay against Collier Row. The Final was battled out by two teams, just over 11 miles apart on the map, at Wembley with St Helens Town beating Warrington Town by the odd goal of five. Wembley.

IT IS A LONG WAY TO LIVINGSTON

In the 2011/12 season, their second in the Wessex League. Pewsey Vale saw one of their players, Jon Guthrie, sign a professional contract for Crewe Alexandra. At the end of the season or the start of the next one, depending where you place July 12th, Crewe came down to Pewsey for a friendly as part of the transfer deal. Pewsey had finished 11th in the League whilst Crewe scraped in to the Division Two play offs in seventh place and then gained promotion by defeating Southend and Cheltenham Town. It was a successful evening for the Club, though in commercial terms they could have made more of the occasion, but the size of the attendance, nearly five hundred, probably surprised them on a pleasantly warm evening. The game was enjoyable but as was to be expected there was a large difference in class and despite Pewsey’s willingness and endeavour the Football League side were two goals ahead at the break. As is inevitably the case in these matches there were numerous substitutions in the second half one of whom, Pogba, scored a hat trick for the visitors in the space of seven minutes. Alas this was not (younger brother) Paul gracing the Recreation Ground turf but Mathias Pogba, who hailed from Guinea and joined Crewe from Wrexham. He scored 17 goals in 56 appearances for “The Alex” before moving through a variety of clubs, including Partick Thistle and Sparta Rotterdam, to Lorca who play in the lower reaches of the Spanish footballing pyramid. The game finished with a five goal victory for the visitors, who were superb ambassadors for their club and League on the evening, but what became of Jon Guthrie, the object of the exercise so to speak. Well, he made 122 appearances and found the net once for Crewe in a five year spell, interrupted at one stage by an eight game loan at Northern Premier League Leek Town, before spending two seasons at Walsall. At the start of the current truncated season he signed a two year contract with Scottish Premiership side Livingston and when the campaign was halted had played in 28 of their thirty league games with power to add if the season re-starts. It is in a way ironic that Pewsey’s problems with the Wessex League have always been with travel – it played a large part in their withdrawal in the current season – yet one of their players is now some 400 miles from home playing Premiership Football, we wish him well.

CLUB NEWS

Folland Sports require an enthusiastic new Club Secretary to handle administrative matters for their Wessex League One and Hampshire Combination teams. The club also anticipate entering an under 18s team in the CSYL (City of Southampton Youth Football League). This provides an exciting opportunity to take a route into local football administration with a very long-established and respected club. The outgoing secretary, in his continuing role at the club as Treasurer, will provide all necessary instruction and support to the successful candidate. Should you be interested, then do please contact Jason Simmonds (Vice Chairman) on 07920 513552 or [email protected]

WEEK 1 ROUND UP

Clubs who have organised or are arranging pre-season games are requested to let me know through email or Twitter so that we can build up a list for games planned. Goes without saying that such games can only proceed once the guidelines provide for them. Thanks in advance. The Club Preparation Fund was launched on Monday 29 June. Grants of up to £500 are available to help clubs purchase items, such as hand sanitizer, or to carry out essential maintenance, such as ensuring there’s running water. Clubs will have received details of the fund- and a link to apply from the Football Foundation.

AGM DATE CHANGE As advised last week, please note that the date of our Annual General Meeting has been changed to Sunday 19th July; with the next F.A. meeting scheduled for Tuesday 14th July, this will allow the League constitution to have been advised by the new date together with an awareness of rule changes. We also then may have further advice on how to prepare for our return to playing football.
