In this, the twenty fifth year of the Wessex League, Division One commenced with eighteen Clubs, one less than the previous season. Downton and Horndean had been promoted to the Premier Division whilst Shaftesbury had returned to the Dorset Premier League to be replaced by Brockenhurst, founder members

of the League and relegated for the first time, and Team Solent who moved up from the Hampshire Premier League. Solent had finished as runners up to Liphook United but gained promotion through their facilities meeting the ground grading criteria. Shaftesbury’s departure ended a seven year stay in the League, during which time they had never finished higher than tenth, and problems behind the scenes were a major factor in their leaving. A look at the final Table shows that five Clubs who were members then are now no longer with the League. Team Solent of course withdrew at the end of the recently truncated season whilst Warminster Town and Fleet Spurs have in the interim engineered moves to the Western League and Combined Counties League respectively with the Wiltshire Club enjoying a good run in the Vase last time round. Pewsey Vale withdrew soon after the start of last season and will be in the Wiltshire Senior League when football re-starts and Stockbridge, who applied for promotion, will be trying all over again in the Hampshire Premier League. Verwood Town and AFC Portchester comfortably filled the two promotion places at the season’s end and also led the way in the goal scoring stakes. Portchester were the only side to top the one hundred mark with Simon Woods very much to the fore scoring 38 goals in 28 appearances. Mike Haskell topped the Verwood charts with 23 whilst Leo Churms notched 29 for Team Solent in what was a very impressive initial year for the Club. At the lower end of the Table there were some fairly high goals against totals though the only really bad result was Hythe & Dibden going down 8-0 to Team Solent. In the League Cup (which we reviewed last week) Brockenhurst did themselves and the Division proud. Helped by four home ties they reached the semi-final stage by beating Team Solent (4-1 on penalties after a two all draw), Andover New Street 5-1, Premier Division Laverstock & Ford 4-1 and then used the penalty route again to overcome Alton after another two all draw. The semi-final draw sent them to Victoria Park where they scored the only goal of the game to defeat Bournemouth and earn a place in the Final only for Christchurch to end their run with a 3-1 win at Bemerton Heath’s Western Way Ground. At the end of the season both Verwood Town and AFC Portchester were promoted to the Premier Division and Warminster made their move to the Western League whilst Whitchurch very much earned and enjoyed a day in the limelight and sunshine and Cowes Sports made their name felt on the FA Vase front. The FA Cup saw three sides from the Division - Brockenhurst, AFC Portchester and Whitchurch United survive the Extra Preliminary Round. In the Preliminary Round Portchester lost to Newport in a replay, Whitchurch beat Brading Town and Brockenhurst defeated near neighbours Lymington Town, though again a replay was needed. So, two Clubs through to the First Qualifying Round and inevitably they were drawn against each other with Whitchurch winning 2-0 at Longmeadow. The Second Qualifying Round saw Southern League Gloucester City travel to Hampshire and over four hundred people saw the home side battle for ninety minutes in warm sunshine before losing 2-0. A superb performance on one of the biggest days in the Club’s long history and a credit to all involved, both on and off the pitch, the full results review for the season is in last week’s edition. The Vase saw a battery of all-Wessex Premier ties in the two Qualifying Rounds with two results of note for differing reasons. Hayling United won 3-0 at East Cowes Victoria but were then removed from the Competition for fielding an ineligible player, and Downton halted Ringwood’s progress in crushing fashion with a 9-1 victory. Brading and Winchester were exempt util the First Round Proper and were joined by eight other Wessex Clubs. In that First Round there were wins for both Bournemouth and Christchurch over Hartley Wintney and Bridport respectively whilst Winchester won 6-1 at Alresford. Bemerton joined the fray in the Second Round proper and defeated Saltash 3-1 and there were also wins for Bournemouth, 4-0 over Torpoint and Christchurch, 3-1 over Melksham. The Third round saw three reduced to one as Bournemouth beat Barnstaple 2-0 while Bemerton and Christchurch went out to Shortwood and Bitton, both from the Western League. Bournemouth’s journey continued with 2-1 defeats of Royston Town and Billingham Synthonia – the second after a goalless draw in the North East – before eventual finalists West Auckland ended their hopes in the Quarter Final with a two goal victory. A long and creditable journey for the Poppies that greatly added to their, and, to a lesser extent. the League’s standing.

There was limited success in the FA Vase though for our Division One sides (the Premier Division was covered last week) with Cowes Sports leading the way. The only winners in the First Qualifying Round were Cowes Sports and, after a fashion, East Cowes Vics. Cowes Sports won 3-2 at Premier Division Totton & Eling but Vics were defeated 3-0 at Hayling United but the Humbugs were disqualified for fielding an ineligible player. The Second Qualifying Round saw Cowes win with the only goal of the game against US Portsmouth and Brockenhurst, following a Bye, beat Cove from the Combined Counties League. East Cowes Vics failed to build on their reprieve, losing 4-0 to Alresford, while Ringwood Town were beaten 9-1 at Downton. Brockenhurst exited the Competition in the First Round Proper at the hands of Blackfield & Langley but Cowes beat Western League Gillingham Town 3-0 at Westwood Park. They followed this with a trip to Surrey and a 1-0 victory over Egham Town before bowing out in the Third Round at Hellenic League Premier side Reading Town.

GOING OUT TO THE WORLD CUP WINNERS

2nd QUALIFYING ROUND- AFC PORTCHESTER 1-3 BOURNEMOUTH Martin Warren notched a hat trick, his first for the club, to help the Poppies begin their run in the Vase this season. Jake Daniels gave the hosts a glimmer of hope before the third goal was scored. 1st ROUND- BOURNEMOUTH 2-0 HARTLEY WINTNEY The visitors came to call with two decent FA Cup results under their belt, wins over Bashley and Bideford. The goals from Jon Blake and Sean Hogan didn’t come until the final fifteen minutes and then It was into the hat for the Second Round draw and a quick trawl to see who remained in the competition in the south that wore tangerine. 2nd ROUND- BOURNEMOUTH 4-0 TORPOINT ATHLETIC Poppies progress to the third Round for only the fourth time in their history in what was eventually a comfortable result with four different names on the score sheet- Dave Ewen, Jon Blake, Martin Warren and Kane Daysh doing the damage with strikes at regular intervals during the game. 3rd ROUND- BOURNEMOUTH 2-0 BARNSTAPLE TOWN Another history making game at Victoria Park but the Poppies were made to work hard for it against a resolute North Devon outfit. A close fought nail biting experience with goals from Jake Rowley and Martin Warren securing a berth in the 4th Round for the first time in Poppies’ history. 4th ROUND- BOURNEMOUTH 2-1 ROYSTON TOWN Spoilt as a spectacle with a fierce wind blowing from the Boundary End straight down the pitch. With Poppies “benefitting” from having the wind behind them in the opening period, early goals from Dave Ewen and Sean Hogan were enough to see Bournemouth through. The visitors pulled one back through substitute Ricky Young with around 25 minutes and the final whistle seemed to take an age to arrive but there was no further goal action and Poppies find themselves in the unfamiliar waters of the fifth Round.

5th ROUND- BILLINGHAM SYNTHONIA 0-0 BOURNEMOUTH In a match severely affected by a cold blustering wind chances were far and few between for both teams. Bournemouth looked a bit jittery for the first 20 minutes but then settled down and can count themselves unfortunate not to have gone through on the day in normal time. This was due in part to some wayward finishing by the Synners but keeper Max Frampton was largely untroubled. With the wind at the visitors back in the second period Bournemouth began to get on top and it looked like only a matter of time before a goal

would come their way. Alas it was not to be even in the final minute when a cross from Max Cream (pictured above) picked out Luke Ingram in front of goal, but he directed his header straight into the arms of Josh Moody. So extra time it was, and there were tired legs all round at the end, and with no goals it was all to play for in the replay. 5th ROUND REPLAY- BOURNEMOUTH 2-1 BILLINGHAM SYNTHONIA What a difference a week makes. Last week there was a biting cold wind howling yet for this replay it was almost shirt sleeves weather at the Vic- ideal conditions for a game. It was the visitors who found the target first on 20 minutes, through Matt Crossen and led until the last twenty. Max Cream on 69 minutes levelled the affair before an 82nd minute winner from Fawzi Saadi- curling his shot low into the far corner to send the home support wild with delight. There was no way back now for Billingham and Bournemouth took the last of the eight spots in the Quarter Final. QUARTER FINAL- BOURNEMOUTH 0-2 WEST AUCKLAND TOWN Bournemouth started well, giving the bumper crowd of 414 early hope creating some openings that West, the side who had put an end to Whitley Bay’s magnificent run were sluggish. The first half hour saw the hosts make use of the long ball to the wings and through the middle of the park to good effect but not quite managing to get the final touch ahead of the central defence and Mark Bell between the sticks, with an effort from Scott Joyce hitting the roof of the net and a Sean Hogan strike shaving the upright at the Winton End. But as the half wore on the Durham outfit began to get more into the game and could have gone in at the break one up had it not been for a goal line clearance after a frantic scramble, or with four first half minutes remaining when Max Frampton made fine reaction saves to deny Stuart Banks and Martin Young. Frampton was again called into action not long after the resumption, making a couple of good saves and was the busier of the two custodians in the second half.

Jon Blake and Joyce both went close for Poppies, with Joyce’s effort again almost taking the top coat of paint off the post. With seven minutes remaining Fawzi Saadi was dismissed and the visitors made the numerical advantage count in the final minutes. As the 4th Official indicated there would be four added minutes and having contained the Bookies’ Vase favourites for so long it was Michael RAE who broke the deadlock well into the last minute of normal time after his initial shot was parried by Frampton. Then almost from the kick off any hope of grabbing a late equaliser

dissolved when Matt MOFFAT grabbed a second, when latching on to a long clearance, through a deflected shot which was rough justice on a fine defensive display from Wayne Crutcher (pictured left) and the rest of the back four this afternoon. All in all the visitors were made to look very ordinary and there was a strong feeling amongst the crowd that we had not witnessed the Vase winners here this afternoon, and so it turned out- with Dunston UTS collecting a 2-0 win over the Durham side on 13 May.

MANX INVASION Whilst the FA cancelled all promotion and relegation from the recently truncated season and kept lateral movement to a minimum, they did allow two new Clubs in to the National League System for the forthcoming season. One of these is a Club representing the Isle of Man which is following in the footsteps of Guernsey FC and Jersey Bulls in endeavouring to make their mark on the Mainland, and which has been placed in the North West Counties League Division One South. This League basically covers Manchester, Liverpool and Cheshire making travel backwards and forwards from Liverpool to the Island easily accessible to all involved. The population of the Isle of Man is around 84,000, smaller than Jersey but larger than Guernsey, and the Isle of Man FA, which is affiliated to the FA, administers football at all levels including two Adult Leagues of thirteen teams per League.

Most of the Clubs in the Premier Division are based in and around Douglas while Peel are on the western side, Ramsey to the north and Castletown on the Southern tip. Travel is obviously very limited in terms of miles with Ramsey and Castletown in the north and south of the Island only being some twenty five miles apart. The main ground, and the one to be used by the fledgling Club, is the Douglas Bowl which has a capacity of 3,000 and, judging by aerial photographs, a large Stand but little other cover – rather reminiscent of Springfield

Stadium in Jersey. St Mary’s are the current League Champion, though St Georges had taken the crown on no fewer than ten occasions in the previous twelve seasons. The writer was under the impression that Clubs (plural) from the Island had entered the FA Vase in the past but can only find record of one, that being Douglas HSOB (High School Old Boys, Ed). I was sure Peel had also played at some stage but cannot find any evidence to support that. In the 1989-90 season Douglas HSOB defeated Blackpool Wren Rovers in the Preliminary Round to earn a tie with a team called St. Dominics who were based in Liverpool, and they were members of the Liverpool County Combination. This was in the days before the dreaded penalty shoot-out had been forced upon the game as a whole and ties were played to a conclusion via as many replays as were needed. On this occasion the two sides met four times before the Liverpool side won through – an expensive and time-consuming business for all concerned. The games went 2-2 away, 4-4 on the Island, 5-5 again on the Island and then a 4-1 defeat back in Liverpool. The Douglas based Club entered the Vase on four further occasions without recording a victory, going down to Vase hardened opposition in Skelmersdale, Salford City, Nantwich and Glasshoughton Welfare and hopefully the new Club will be able to resume participation in the Competition. Mention of grounds on the Island earlier in connection with the Premier Division, it would have been butting in to mention that Foxdale, who are in Division One, play at Billy Goat Park. Isle of Man FC commence their season on the 15th August with a nice touch – a home friendly with Guernsey FC - and if in time they can match the performances and progress of Guernsey and Jersey Bulls they can be well satisfied. We wish them well.

TODAY’S LESSON IS GEOGRAPHY The draw for the 2020/21 Europa League has been published, despite, as this is written, the fact that the 2019/20 Competition has not as yet reached its conclusion. The Preliminary Round contains a vast number of Clubs unknown to the writer, in both the footballing and geographical sense, so ten teams randomly selected from the draw are listed below (Fans for the last named are usually only allowed in two by two. Sorry, Ed). All that is required is the Country each represents:-

PROMOTION AND RELEGATION

For the record as much as anything- Step 4 relegation- the bottom club plays a Step 5 club in a relegation play-off match. Step 5 Promotion- The League Champions will be promoted. The 2nd and 3rd placed teams from the North West Counties, Northern and Northern Counties East leagues will also be promoted. FOUR clubs with the best PPG (points per game) from the other second placed teams will be promoted. The seven remaining 2nd placed clubs will play a playoff games against Step 4 clubs. 12 of the bottom 14 placed clubs will be relegated from Step 5, again decided by PPG. From Step 6, the top four clubs will be promoted, except in the South West Peninsula League who will promote two. The bottom two in each league will be relegated and finally with Step 7 the top eligible team will be promoted (unless lower than 5th). More than one club per league CANNOT be promoted. The process was deferred due to the cessation of season 2019/20 but for 2021/22 will provide for a new League (in the North) at Step 4. Two new Step 5 leagues are to be created, and three FEWER at Step 6. It should be noted that any team NOT accepting the promotion or a play-off place will instead be relegated. As a reminder, Step 4 would be the equivalent of (say) the Southern League South and West division. Step 5 would equate to our Premier Division, with Step 6 being the same level as our First Division. Step 7 would be Hampshire Premier or Dorset Premier for example.

BROCKENHURST’S FA VASE ODYSSEY

PART ONE- Once again, the Newsletter Editor’s story has set thoughts in motion with his revelation that Brockenhurst are one of just nine Clubs who have competed in the Vase in every season since the Competition came in to being 47 years ago. A remarkable achievement and one well worth recalling, starting with the period from year one to the turn of the Millennium. It all began in 1974-75 when Brockenhurst were still in the Hampshire League and a few years before the Wessex League came in to being, and it can be said that the Club enjoyed a successful start in the Competition. The very first opponents were Hellenic League side Newbury Town, who were defeated by a single goal to nil, before more local opposition followed with wins over Cowes (pre-Sports suffix) and Gosport Borough, the latter after a replay. Western League Cadbury Heath were next to fall leading to a fifth round tie at home with Stamford from Lincolnshire who were to prove too strong on the day. They went on to finish in third place in the United Counties League and reach the semi-final stage of the Vase and their four one victory at Grigg Lane emphasised their prowess. The following season and another decent run that finished this time in the fourth round with defeat at the hands of Hungerford after victories over Frimley Green from Surrey, Worthing and Chichester. Not another local side met - the regionalisation of the draw was not so evident in the early years. This relative success then disappeared temporarily with defeats at the first time of asking in the next five years, going down to four relatively local sides in Gosport, Swaythling, Sholing Sports and Thatcham and also losing three one at home to First Tower United from Jersey, only the second year that the Channel Islands side had entered the Competition. 1981/82 saw a return to form so to speak with the fourth round being reached and notable again for the lack of “local” opposition. The first three games saw matches with Clubs from Berkshire (Maidenhead United), Sussex ( Arundel) and Gloucestershire (Yate Town) – all defeated – before beating Newbury and losing in a replay to Surrey based Molesey. Amesbury, then members of the Wiltshire League, scored the only goal of the game to end the 1982/83 attempt at the second fence after a replay win over Horsham, with the local Press reporting that the young Amesbury side produced a solid team performance which earned them a thoroughly deserved victory. The goal came from Willie Sturgess that afternoon. Dave Perry and Steve Gower also having chances to give a wider margin1983/84 started with a gratifying six one home defeat of Wimborne Town- then in the Western

League Division One. The next visitors to the Forest were a Club probably unknown to most – including the writer – in Port of Bristol FC, then members of the Gloucestershire Senior League, who sadly folded in the early nineties. They were defeated 3-1 before a second meeting with Yate in three seasons saw the Gloucestershire side gain revenge for the earlier defeat. This was followed by Preliminary Round defeats at the hands of Hungerford and Westbury United leading to 1986-87 when the Club became founder members of the Wessex League. Fellow Wessex sides were avoided however in the Vase in favour of Berkshire opposition with a win over Didcot Town being followed by another defeat at the hands of Hungerford. 1987/88 was not one of the better seasons, not helped by the system then of replays until the game was decided - none of the much disliked penalty shoot-out business. Brockenhurst defeated Clanfield -the one in Oxfordshire rather than the one near Portsmouth – and were drawn at home to Vale Recreation from Guernsey in the next round, the first occasion upon which they had entered the Vase. The game ended in a two all draw with the replay the following week at Corbett Field finishing with eight goals being equally shared and the need for a third meeting. One assumes that the FA decided on the venue for the game and it was played in Guernsey with the home side winning by nine goals to one. Without detracting from their victory, it is perhaps feasible to assume that the Wessex League side had availability problems! The following three seasons seemingly saw some regionalisation in the draw as Brockenhurst suffered opening round defeats by Eastleigh, Christchurch and BAT. Seasons 1992/93 and 1993/94 saw Brockenhurst play a total of six games in the Vase -four of them against Thatcham. In the first year a win over Hellenic League side Bicester in a replay was followed by a 2-0 defeat by Thatcham. Twelve months later the two Clubs were drawn against each other in the Preliminary Round and it took three meetings before the Berkshire side progressed with a 3-0 success. At least there were not the travel problems encountered with Vale Rec. 1994/95 saw a good win over Swindon Supermarine, then in the Hellenic League – before a rather bruising six two defeat at Combined Counties side Egham in suburban Surrey. The Isle of Wight held sway in 1995/96 and 1997/98 with both Ryde Sports (4-0) and Cowes Sports (2-1) winning in the Forest but the season in between bore more fruit. Firstly, the Hampshire/Berkshire border was just crossed for a five three victory over Kintbury Rangers from the Hellenic League before Western League Dawlish Town made the long haul to Brockenhurst and were defeated 5-2. The reward for two convincing wins was a trip to Bridgwater and defeat by the odd goal in three by the then Western League Champions. 1998/99 saw another five goal haul, this time against Chard, again from the Western League, before a four hundred mile round trip to Newquay and a 2-0 loss to the then South Western League side. So, to the Millennium and the halfway point in our Odyssey, marked unfortunately by just the one game with a journey to East Preston in Sussex ending in a four one defeat. More hopefully to follow next week.

WEEK 8 ROUND UP

With the season rapidly approaching, perhaps a timely reminder to make sure that clubs remember that ANY player who is returning to ENGLAND after a playing spell away MUST have International Clearance, before taking part in any game, including pre-season. An initial two cases of Covid-19 were reported last weekend at Ringwood Town they responded quickly and the NHS advised the players concerned would need to self-isolate for ten days from the start of the symptoms. We wish them both a speedy recovery. Guidelines have been followed and advice provided by our Vice Chairman together with the published Government guidelines for anyone in contact with the two players on that evening. Couple of games from last weekend that were noted after the Newsletter was published; New Milton Town won a best of nine game at Dorchester Sports- Linnets goals from Ben Cooper with a double plus singles from Joe Barron, Chris Long and Morgan Turner. Elsewhere Alresford Town lost 4-0 against Hastings United. Last Saturday, Hythe & Dibden overcame near neighbours Blackfield & Langley 2-1 thanks to goals from Mig Dark and Ethan Anders. Nasim Meddah netting for the “newcomers” to the Premier Division, and on the Island, the 2-1 win for Romsey Town against Cowes Sports came as a result of goals from Jack Ormiston and Liam Magee. At Longmeadow Whitchurch United won 4-1 with George Bishop hitting a double with Mikel Davis and Aaron Randall also finding their way on to the scoresheet. Bashley shared four goals with Bush Hill thanks to goals from Harry Bunce and Lewis Ross, and finally from last weekend AFC Stoneham won 5-1 at Liphook with goals from George Britton, Ben Clarke, Jo Sutherden, Alex Welch and Sam Woodward.

SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS 2020/21 EDITION NUMBER 08

RETURN OF SPECTATORS Statement from Nick Spencer, League Chairman. I am sure like me that you are all delighted with the announcement today from The FA allowing clubs to have spectators at their fixtures from 22nd August. Clubs were required to submit to the league secretary, and upload to their websites, the additional Risk Assessments for spectators, by Midnight of the 21st August. Clubs are also required to keep records and inform the league of all that attend forthcoming matches as Non-Players. This would include Managers, Coaches, Directors, Club officials, League Officials, together with numbers of spectators. The 15% (150 spectators) and 30% (300 spectators) are welcome figures that must be controlled, the league does not want to explain and or defend any allegation of breaches, to The FA. Please follow the guidelines and Risk Assessments, applying common sense and behaving sensibly will help to keep us all safe and well. To help you focus on your responsibilities you will find below an edited version (this does not replace The FA communication) specific to Step 5 and Step 6 leagues. The Football Association has issued updated guidelines for the National League System [NLS] that include a phased and limited return of spectators for clubs at Steps 5-6, our Premier and Division One level. The FA worked continuously alongside the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport [DCMS], the Sports Grounds Safety Authority [SGSA] and leagues to submit detailed proposals for a phased and limited return of spectators at these levels to the UK Government. The DCMS has now clarified its guidance on the return to recreational team sport and clubs at Steps 5-6 of the NLS are permitted to accommodate a phased and limited return of spectators to fixtures. However, they must follow the Government’s guidance in relation to Covid-19 and The FA’s updated guidelines for the NLS. All our member clubs must have a designated Covid-19 Officer; complete and publish bespoke risk assessments and action plans; and arrange support for “Track and Trace” BEFORE implementing the following: Stage One: From 22 August 2020 to 30 August 2020, spectators are permitted to attend fixtures at Steps 5-6 of the NLS, providing that their number does not exceed 15% of the minimum ground grading capacity at these levels or respective figures set out within The FA’s updated guidelines. If any of our member clubs do not play any fixtures during this period, they will need to play at least one pre-season or competitive fixture in accordance with its respective level of spectators BEFORE moving on to Stage Two. So if you have not played in this week, you can only progress to Stage Two once you have done. Stage Two: From 31 August 2020, clubs at Steps 5-6 of the NLS will be permitted to allow spectators to attend fixtures provided that their number does not exceed 30% of the minimum ground grading capacity at their level or the respective figures set out within The FA’s updated guidelines. However, they must be satisfied that they have been able to comply with the Government’s guidance on the return to recreational team sport and The FA’s updated guidelines. The phased and limited return of spectators at these levels will be kept under constant review in line with the UK Government’s guidelines and will be amended accordingly as required. Please see The FA’s updated guidelines for the NLS, for further information. Clubs will have had the email covering this statement that has the links to the various sites for review.

It has been further clarified that spectators are determined to be those who come through the turnstiles and not club, League or accredited media representatives. This means only paying spectators are to be counted in reference to the allowed numbers of 150 or 300 as per FA instructions. However, ALL attending will be subject to registering their name and contact details with this logged as part of the Risk Assessment.'
