The League and League Cup double has been achieved just four times in our League history, and the double has been won twice by just the one team. Wimborne started the ball rolling back in 1993/94 and repeated the feat six years later in 1999/2000. With severe weather preventing the Cup competition being completed the watching public had to wait until 2001/02 to see Andover do the double and then another two year wait before Winchester City became the fourth and (at time of writing) final winners of the League title and League Cup. Whilst the Cup has travelled fairly extensively across our sphere of influence, the League title has tended to gravitate to the west of Southampton Water, AFC Lymington and their successors Lymington & New Milton have won it five times, and are two clear of three time winners, Bashley, Poole Town and Wimborne Town. Winchester City have broken that hold with three wins. In summary then 19 different names on the League Trophy and 23 on the League Cup. Will we see a fifth double winning campaign this term? Watch this space as we begin to get underway.

SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS 2020/21 EDITION NUMBER 10

We complete our random look at every fifth year of the Wessex League with Division One in 2016-17. The Division showed an increase of three Clubs from the previous year to twenty-one meaning a very full fixture list compared to recent seasons. Portland United and Amesbury had been promoted to the Premier Division with five new Clubs coming in to the League. Hamble Club and Baffins Milton Rovers who had finished first and third in the Hampshire Premier League, Folland Sports, relegated from the Premier Division, and Shaftesbury and Weymouth Reserves stepping up from the Dorset Premier League. It was a return for Shaftesbury, who had left in 2011 and new ground for the League with the inclusion of a Reserve side. This was not universally popular at the AGM despite the League stressing that their inclusion was an FA decision, but Weymouth Reserves were a credit to themselves and the League both on and off the field throughout the season. Just three Clubs from the final table in that season are no longer with the League. Weymouth Reserves were withdrawn by their parent Club in the following season whilst Pewsey Vale and Fleet Spurs left at the end of the season under review. Pewsey did things properly, citing their constant dislike of travel and gaining a switch to the Hellenic League but sadly Fleet Spurs went behind the League’s back and approached both the FA and the Combined Counties League over a possible switch. The FA originally gave an emphatic “no” to the request but then, in effect, did a U-turn and allowed the move after the Club reportedly threatened to fold. The season as far as the League was concerned turned out to be a triumph for three of the new Clubs with Hamble Club, Baffins and Shaftesbury filling the top three places with Hamble Club 14 points clear in top spot. The three leading Clubs amassed 388 goals between them in the League and sixth place Laverstock and Ford also passed the century. Almost coincidentally the three bottom Clubs conceded 389 goals between them. The winners registered one score of seven, two of eight, one of nine and one of fourteen and for good measure also scored ten in a Southampton Senior Cup tie. Baffins scored two nines, two sevens and a six while Shaftesbury registered two sixes and three sevens. Individually Dougie Rowe and James Thomson accounted for 55 of Hamble’s goals, Ryan Pennery and Tyler Moret scored 67 between them for Baffins while Shaftesbury were indebted to 49 goals from the Danny Finnigan and Mark Ford pairing. Laverstock & Ford obviously adopted a “win or lose” policy throughout the season as they did not register a single draw in a League fixture, a fairly rare occurrence for any side, whilst Ringwood equalled their best ever Division One League placing in fifth spot. The First Division also made its mark on the League Cup, so often the domain of the big boys from the Premier, and again it was one of the new Clubs who very much led the way. In the early rounds Downton, New Milton, Shaftesbury, Laverstock & Ford and Tadley Calleva all defeated Premier League opposition with Downton scoring five against Bournemouth and Hampshire Cricket Captain James Vince scoring a hat trick for Laverstock. In the Third Round Hamble Club, Baffins and Shaftesbury all progressed via the penalty shootout route and Tadley defeated Blackfield & Langley. The penalties went the other way in the quarter finals with both Tadley and Hamble Club going out via same but with Baffins beating Hamworthy United and Shaftesbury overcoming Brockenhurst there were two Division One sides in the last four. Drawn against each other, Baffins went through by the odd goal in five thereby reaching the Final at their first attempt but Sholing knew a little too much on the day and the Portsmouth Club had to settle for the runners up medals. On to the two FA Competitions and as usual entry to the FA Cup was not easy for Step Six Clubs across the Country and the League’s participation was very limited. Tadley, Laverstock & Ford and Follands went out in the Extra Preliminary Round – the last named 7-0 at Cadbury Heath who have made a habit of defeating Wessex League Clubs over the years – but Whitchurch advanced with a replay win over Cribbs on the outskirts of Bristol. However, the reward was a home tie with Moneyfields and a 3-0 defeat and with US Portsmouth, who had a bye in the earlier Round, also going out there was no further interest in the Competition. The FA Vase saw virtually all the eligible Clubs in the Division make the necessary entry but the First Round Qualifying sadly saw a large number of them depart at the first time of asking. Tadley, Ringwood, US Portsmouth, New Milton, Follands, Andover New Street, Hythe & Dibden and Downton were all beaten -the last named 7-0 by near neighbours Bemerton Heath – but there were some successes. Whitchurch defeated Laverstock & Ford but there were wins for Romsey, Christchurch and AFC Stoneham against opposition from

other Leagues. Romsey and Christchurch beat former Wessex League Clubs Warminster and Swanage respectively whilst AFC Stoneham scored three without reply against Malmesbury Victoria on a rather unpleasant afternoon at Eastleigh. The visitors carried a lot of baggage at the time and their supporters, to say the least, were not very good losers. The Second Qualifying Round saw defeats for Whitchurch, Christchurch (3-1 at home to Romsey), East Cowes Vics and Fleet Spurs but Shaftesbury pulled off a superb 5-1 victory over Premier Division Fareham. AFC Stoneham defeated Gloucestershire side Longlevens and Alton progressed at the expense of Hellenic League Henley Town. On to the First Round Proper and four Clubs became one with Alton losing to Southern Counties East side Corinthian, Romsey going down by the odd goal in five to Portland and Shaftesbury beating Stoneham. The Dorset side then drew Wessex League opposition again only to become one of Team Solent’s victims in their long run in the Competition. Please see last week’s Newsletter for the story in the National competitions for our Premier Division members of the time. But overall a good season. 21 Clubs and some impressive performances from those new to the League and it is pleasing to see the further progress that these Clubs have made, both within the League and on the various Cup fronts.

SOUTHAMPTON SENIOR CUP – THE WESSEX YEARS

Some further research has been completed following the small piece in Newsletter #6, and my thanks to Gary Day for providing the information. Until recently the Southampton Senior Cup has not been contested on a regular basis by teams from the Wessex League. For example BAT won it in 1989, beating Blackfield & Langley 3-0 and were promoted that summer and aside from not being able to retain the Cup- losing to AC Delco in the 2nd Round in 1990, their Reserves entered from there. Romsey Town picked up the Trophy in 1995 but had already slipped out of the Wessex two season's earlier. Winchester City won it in 2003 and were promoted to the Wessex that summer and it was a similar story next term when VT FC won it and took a place in the Wessex that summer, after which they continued to participate with their Reserves, successfully as well for a fair while. In 2004/05 no Wessex side from any of the three divisions could enter, primarily based on the fact that the three divisions, particularly the bottom one without floodlights, were too large and there would have been limited Saturdays to play the games. It does seem that our Division One sides were able to enter perhaps 2011/12 being the first time after the long break, with the inclusion of Division One sides Brockenhurst and Team Solent; but it was 2015/16 when the competition had the Wessex Premier sides once more. SEASON WINNER SCORE RUNNERS-UP DATE 2012 AFC Stoneham [Hampshire Premier] 2-1 Bush Hill 15 May 2013 AFC Stoneham [Hampshire Premier] 2-2 aet [*] Brockenhurst 29 April 2014 Sholing Reserves [Wyvern Combination] 5-0 Hedge End Rangers 16 April 2015 Team Solent [Wessex Division One] 3-2 Hamble Club 29 April 2016 Team Solent [Wessex Premier] 5-0 Blackfield & Langley 13 April 2017 Sholing [Wessex Premier] 3-1 Team Solent 3 May 2018 Southampton Academy 6-0 Blackfield & Langley 2 May 2019 Alresford Town [Wessex Premier] 3-0 AFC Stoneham 16 April 2020 [competition abandoned] Stoneham’s 2-1 win over Bush Hill in 2012 came through goals from Stewart Beck and Liam Hall. Nick Kesby being the Bush Hill scorer that evening. The following year Brockenhurst took Stoneham to extra time before going down 5-4 on penalties [* see above], Dave Reading and Josh Harfield on target for the Purples, Mike Spinney and Lee Clark providing the Badgers’ goals.

Coby Wilson notched a double with Adrian Grijincu, Cain Prentice and Jamie Mansell adding to the score in Sholing Reserves’ 5-0 win over Hedge End but the following year Sam Byles hit a single and Jesse Waller-Lassen bagged a brace for Team Solent in their best of five win over Hamble Club- James Thomson with the Hamble goals. The Students retained the Cup with an emphatic 5-0 win over Blackfield the following season. Tobi Adekunle collecting a pair with Pip Nolan, Martin Johnson and Jesse Waller-Lassen also finding the net. Dan Mason, Lee Wort and Micky Hubbard were the Sholing scorers that overcame Team Solent and at the same time prevented a hat trick of trophy wins. Tyrell Mitford with the consolation goal that evening- with close to 750 in the St Marys Stadium. Blackfield were on the end of another big final defeat against the Southampton Academy side the next season but in 2019 Alresford Town got their name on the Trophy- Steve Hall, Lerone Plummer and Luke Rae secured a 3-0 win for the Magpies against AFC Stoneham, a decent crowd of 1,030 being reported for the game. However back in the first Wessex season, there were only three Wessex sides involved in this competition (1986/87) namely Road Sea Southampton, Romsey Town, and Sholing Sports. Eventual winners Folland Sports of course came our way joining in 1987/88, so how did our teams fare that first season-

ROMSEY TOWN 18-Oct 1st Round 3-0 Pirelli General Reserves 15-Nov 2nd Round 2-1 Blackfield & Langley 20-Dec 3rd Round 1-1 aet Awbridge 10-Jan 3rd Round Replay 0-0 aet Awbridge (0-2 on penalties) [This was Awbridge’s first season in the then Hampshire League top flight]

ROAD SEA SOUTHAMPTON 08-Oct 1st Round 4-1 Nutfield 15-Nov 2nd Round 4-2 aet Winchester Castle 16-Dec 3rd Round 0-1 Sholing Sports

SHOLING SPORTS 18-Oct 1st Round 3-2 AC Edwardians 15-Nov 2nd Round 8-2 AC Delco Reserves 16-Dec 3rd Round 1-0 Road Sea Southampton 24-Jan Quarter Final 4-1 Hamble Club 21-Mar Semi Final 1-0 ISL Midanbury (at Netley Recreation Ground) 06-May Final 0-1 Folland Sports (at The Dell)

The Final looked all set for extra time before Ben HASLAM latched on to Sean Mallon’s through ball beating Sholing Sports’ keeper Mervyn Bevis from a tight angle. It was a case of defences on top for the previous 80 minutes or so, with chances far and few between. Local media suggests the result was just about deserved with the eventual winners carving out three chances in the second half. It might have been a different story had a Derek Holloway header in the first half had been a bit lower as his effort hit the crossbar and apart from Gary Joseph’s pace up front had little to show in the attack, but Follands had keeper Colin Rafferty to thanks as well including a fine a stop to deny Alan Hallett. Follands were unable to retain their local crown in 1987/88 though. A First Round win at Mullard Sports by a 4-1 margin followed by 3-1 win at Old Simmarians and another 4-1 at BAT Reserves saw the Planemakers rewarded with a home draw in the 4th Round. There their campaign faltered going down 1-0 to Braishfield who were then a Hampshire League Division 2 side.

Follands didn't enter in 1988/89, it appears in the summer of 1988 that the clubs wanted a whole season's fixture list and so the Wessex clubs would need to rely on their teams getting a home draw and even then, their opponents agreeing to play in midweek. But in 1989/90 AFC Totton took part as did their Reserves entered winning their first round game. However it produced what was probably one of the biggest cup shocks in the history of the competition, as MMI won at Testwood Park. The visitors were a Southampton Senior League 2nd Division side at the time. Paul Doswell gave the Stags the lead in the first half, but goals from Andy Jones and Colin Richardson secured the surprise win. Richardson also missed a late chance to make the result even more emphatic, although the last fifteen minutes was a bit like the Alamo for the MMI defence. Romsey entered too beating Winchester Castle 4-1 and Folland Sports Reserves 2-0. Before going out at the hands of Pirelli General 2-1 in the 3rd Round. Their Reserves were also in the competition. Folland Sports first team also too part losing out in the 4th Round (Quarter Final) by a goal to nil at Netley Central Sports.

MATCH DAY CLUB COMMITTEE PASSES

In previous years, the league has provided each member club with eight ground passes. This will not be the case for the 2020/21 season. The visiting club will complete the Matchday Pass Request Form with the eight names and their position within the club and email to the home club secretary 24 hours prior to kick-off. This will apply to all our competition fixtures. The form was included with an email sent to clubs last weekend, and you should please also note that there is a version that may be found on the league website under the information tab. The completed form will be handed to the person at the turnstile/paybox so that the people named on the form can be admitted. Any person stating that they are a club official and or not listed on the form will be liable to pay the appropriate admission price. This is a new process that initially may experience difficulties; however clubs should support each other to make this work. Should you experience any issues, please inform the league secretary.

PROGRAMMES All programmes must contain the following adverts: Sydenhams, MJM Sports, Voice FM and FA Respect as approved by the Board. These adverts can be downloaded from the league website. Players must wear the numbers on their shirts that are printed in the match programme and shown on the team sheet if these were submitted within the stipulated time as per Rule. Players first names must be provided. It is a league requirement that clubs must produce a programme for each home game in the League, League Cup, FA Cup, FA Vase and County Senior Cup. Clubs can choose to either print their programme or have an online version but may not alternate. Please note that all online programmes must be submitted to Mike Robins the League Media Officer at [email protected] 24 hours prior to kick-off. The programme competition will run again this season, clubs will be advised of two dates in the season when printed programmes are to be submitted to an address as notified.

LEAGUE DIRECTIVES

The attention of clubs is drawn to the revised League Directives that have been released recently. These have been sent to all Club Secretaries and may also be found on the League website. Many changes relate to provisions required under revised Government protocol in light of the Covid-19 pandemic. All clubs are requested to ensure that these are followed.

SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS 2020/21 EDITION NUMBER 10

MIDWEEK MATCH REPORTS Emirates FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round SHAFTESBURY 2-2 FAWLEY Fawley have quite a good cup record in recent years and they immediately took the game to their Premier Division rivals in a dominant first half display writes Roger Allen. Declan Hartigan was wide with an early header. The next chance on 10 minutes fell to Lewis Connors but his shot was deflected wide. He took the resulting corner which was headed in at the near post by Dane SAYCE. Fawley continued to dominate all the goalmouth action as Shaftesbury defence was continually struggling to stop the Fawley attack from running in behind them. Dylan Knight twice went close and Connors shot over when well placed. Fawley had the ball in the net again on 42 minutes but this was disallowed for hands against Knight. Although Shaftesbury had plenty of the ball, there was a complete inability to pose any threat on the Fawley goal until the final minute of normal time in the first half when Connor Millar picked up the ball 30 yards out. His pile driver of a shot was inches wide with James Bruce in the Fawley goal struggling to cover his left hand post. Fawley weren't finished for the half as two minutes into stoppage time they doubled their lead. From a right wing cross by Lewis Bailey, KNIGHT was able to generate enough power and direction on a header to take it past Paul Woods in the home goal and into the top corner. HT 0-2 I don't know what it was - whether Fawley ran out of steam or Shaftesbury suddenly found their form during half time but the second half was a completely different story. Shaftesbury were helped by an early goal on 53 minutes when a Sean Colohan free kick fell kindly to Ryan MITCHELL to run the ball home from short range. Soon afterwards Mitchell had another shot charged down and Oli Roberts had a close range header saved by Bruce as Shaftesbury set off in search of an equaliser which finally came in the 70th minute from the penalty spot. Bruce pushed over Aaron Lane-Leney and Charlie KENDALL scored from the resulting spot kick. Fawley did have the ball in the net with 10 minutes to go but the assistant's offside flag had long been raised and the goal was disallowed. The rest of the chances fell to the home side but neither team was able to secure the winner in the final minutes. And so to penalties and Fawley took an early advantage but after 10 kicks it was 3-3. Both teams scored with their 6th and 7th kicks but at the 8th time of asking Fawley scored and Shaftesbury missed. Elsewhere, a Tadley freekick in the first minute hit the inside of the post, and Alresford created a good chance of their own moments later, only to be caught narrowly offside. However the deadlock wasn’t broken until the 87th minute where Jamie JOHNSTON collected the ball just outside the penalty area and fired home for a deserved winner, but at what cost as youngster Shay Barham collected a serious ligament injury during the game- we wish him a speedy recovery. Two closely matched sides, with defences generally on top, although the visiting keeper was the busier of the two. The 4-0 win for Badshot Lea over Amesbury Town was a well contested but competitive game throughout, probably a bit closer than the scoreline suggests, with three goals in the final 20 minutes. Both sides played some good football. Goalmouth action was at a premium at Hurn Bridge as well. An early chance came the way of Kyle Graham but Ascot keeper Sam Gray reacted quickly to take the ball off his head. In the first half he was the busier of the two keepers with a superb full length save to deny a Brad Cherrett free kick from breaking the deadlock. His opposite number Lewis Gunstone-Grey was also called into action early in the second half saving at the feet of Harry Laflin. The visitors took the lead against the run of play when Aiden HIGGS took the ball round the onrushing keeper. A deserved equaliser came from Jack SATTERLEY as the game entered added on time to set up a penalty shoot-out. Christchurch went first and it was all square until the 14th when Ascot’s James Howarth missed the target to put Christchurch through.

MIDWEEK FA CUP ROUND UP

In this unusual season the FA Cup opened the proceedings, with 17 Extra Preliminary Round matches scheduled, before a League game had taken place. 16 of those were on Tuesday evening with ten victories and six defeats as far as Wessex League sides were concerned, though six of those wins came in ties between Clubs in the League. Starting with those, Bashley recorded the highest score of the evening with an eight two defeat of Division One Whitchurch United. Two goals apiece for Lewis Ross, Harry Morgan and Connor Whitely with singles for Chris Onoufriou and Harry McGrath. United’s goals came from Ryan Long and Aaron Randall in what was Bashley’s biggest win in the Competition since beating Western League Torrington 9-0 in 1997/98. The local derby between Brockenhurst and Lymington attracted a capacity attendance of 300 – complying with the current restrictions – and was settled by a single goal from the visitors Ollie Dennett. Cowes Sports played host to Totton & Eling and the difference between Divisions was maintained with a John McKie goal sending the Yachtsmen in to the next round. A tight game in the north of the County saw Tadley oust Alresford with Jamie Johnston scoring the only goa; just three minutes from time. There was a good win for Bemerton Heath in a high-quality encounter at Western Way. The home side played the second half with ten men and a late Justin Bennett penalty, coupled with his earlier strike, gave them victory over Premier Division Horndean who could only manage a Connor Duffin goal in reply. Celebrations for Fawley AFC as they achieved their first ever win in the Competition, at the seventh time of asking, with victory in a topsy-turvy game at Premier Division Shaftesbury. Fawley were 2-0 up at the break but the home side scored twice in the second half to send the game in to penalties with Fawley coming out on top by seven “goals” to six. On to the ties against “foreign” opposition and a routine 4-0 win for AFC Portchester over Combined Counties Division One side Sandhurst Town, courtesy of goals from Craig Harding (2), Rob Evans and Joe Johnson. Hamble Club staged their tie at Romsey Town’s Bypass Ground where goals from teenagers Ollie Lovell and Josh Batt rendered a very late Reading City goal meaningless. An exciting, and possibly long, evening at Hurn Bridge where Christchurch snatched victory from the jaws of defeat against Combined Counties high fliers Ascot United. The Berkshire side were leading 1-0 in second half stoppage time only for Jack Satterley to score the latest of equalisers and Christchurch then go through 7-6 in a fraught penalty shoot-out. A little further west Hamworthy United scored three times, all in the second half, to defeat Calne Town with Connor Cocklin, Max Buckler and Matt Neale on the score sheet against the Western League side who failed to trouble the scorers. Six defeats in this section where Fleet Town travelled to the South Coast and scored first against Southern Combination Pagham before two goals, one a wicked deflection, gave the hosts victory. Amesbury had a difficult cross-country journey to Badshot Lea on the outskirts of Farnham and went down 4-0, though reports suggest the score flattered the hosts, and not too far away Fareham conceded the only goal of the game to exit at the hands of Frimley Green. Still in Surrey, Blackfield and Langley travelled to Camberley Town for the second time in three years and, as per the previous visit the game ended goalless. Last time Blackfield went out in the replay, this time they went down 5-4 on penalties. Portland similarly met opponents from two to three years ago in Western League Clevedon Town. Last time Portland won in Somerset, this time they lost in Dorset to a second half penalty, The hard luck story of the night belongs to Bournemouth, Drawn away to Southern League Basingstoke, who are still waiting to move in to the Winklebury Complex in the town, they found themselves having to travel to Reading City as Basingstoke couldn’t play at Winchester and held their higher ranked opponents to a one all draw over ninety minutes – Jamie Wilson the scorer – before going out 5-4 in the dreaded penalty shootout. One game on Wednesday to complete our ties and another all-Wessex meeting. Dale Mason gave Baffins Milton Rovers the half time lead but goals from Scott Hills and Sam Woodward after the break saw visitors AFC Stoneham go through to host Pagham in the next round. Our thanks to all the home Clubs for their hard work in coping with the COVID restrictions and regulations and to visiting Clubs for adhering to same.

NEW FUNDING INITIATIVE

There’s a new funding scheme that’s available to all clubs in The FA National League System, including our member clubs. The Premier League has launched the Matchday Support Fund, which helps clubs prepare for the restart of football and safe return of supporters to their stadia. In total, 65 leagues and more than 1,100 clubs will be able to benefit from this financial support. The application window is now open to eligible National League System clubs in Steps 1-6, the Welsh Premier League and FA Women’s Pyramid clubs in Tiers 1-5. It will help clubs to put measures in place that will make grounds safer for the 2020/21 season in accordance with their COVID-19 Risk Assessments. This announcement follows the recent publication of Government and FA guidelines for the return of football and spectators. A range of grants are available through the Football Stadia Improvement Fund to help clubs make physical changes to infrastructure in line with FA guidance to cater for reduced capacity and social distancing measures. The funding can also be used for specialist consultancy support around risk assessments, implementing IT and ticketing, contactless payments, hand sanitisation points and supporter engagement. The application window runs until 5pm on Wednesday 16 September. It’s a simple process, so clubs should apply to the FSIF directly and not through third parties. Visit footballfoundation.org.uk/grant/matchday-support-fund for more information about eligibility and how to apply.

WHOLE GAME SYSTEM

Several clubs have been in contact relating to some system performance issues with the Whole Game System. The primary issues have been;

• Whole Game System speed which is slowing the registration of players for clubs and leagues. The FA are working hard with their colleagues in FA Digital Technology to rebalance the load on the system in order to improve performance and reduce volunteer time expended.

• Full Time integration hasn’t been effective for some leagues. The FA Digital Team produced a resolution last weekend, which has resolved the majority but not all integration issues. They will continue to work on producing a fix for any outstanding integration issues.

The FA would like to apologise for any additional work and anxiety this may have caused.

WEEKEND MATCH REPORTS

Division One VERWOOD TOWN 1-2 HYTHE & DIBDEN A tough opening game for both sides with Hythe & Dibden edging out the home side in a close contest writes Roger Allen. Hythe had the ball in the net in the 8th minute through Ethan Anders but he had been flagged offside. Verwood's first real chance was from the penalty spot in the 11th minute as Matt Vining was tripped just inside the penalty area by Joe Macklin. The kick was taken by Callum Butler but his shot was weak and keeper Josh Cotton had no problem saving with his legs. Verwood had the next chance but a Sam Danvers shot flashed just wide. ANDERS was proving difficult to track making runs from midfield and in the 17th minute he headed wide when well placed. In the following minute he did better, getting on the end of a Cain Prentice cross to score from close range. He also had the next chance as he cut in from the right but Callum Maher in the home goal touched his shot wide. For a while Hythe looked to have got a grip on the game but Verwood slowly worked their way back as half time approached. The 40th minute was a pivotal moment as Butler for Verwood had a fierce shot tipped onto the bar by Cotton and Hythe took immediate advantage by going up the other end to double their lead. Rhys

Crooks sent in a left wing cross and Craig KINGSWELL at the far post out jumped his marker to head across Maher into the far corner. HT 0-2 Anders had the first chance for Hythe just after half time but his shot was blocked. In truth the least said about the second half probably the better as, for both sides, it became a war of attrition. Hythe had managed to support their strikers well during the first half but for long periods

of the second Nathan Lynch, Prentice & Kingswell were left to battle the Verwood defence on their own. For Verwood their finishing was substandard and, had they been more clinical, it is doubtful that they would have lost the game. Butler was their best player and he set up their only goal in the 76th minute as he advanced across midfield and slipped in Edgar ZANIN to score with a low cross shot. There was plenty of effort from both sides as the game reached its conclusion but the only notable effort on goal was a shot by one of the Hythe substitutes that crashed against the bar. FT 1-2 Premier Division BLACKFIELD & LANGLEY 1-0 FAREHAM TOWN Wessex League action returned to Gang Warily after a couple of seasons absence and the home side marked the day with an, albeit narrow, victory writes John Gorman. Boasting a much changed line up both on and off the pitch, Blackfield found themselves under early pressure with Fareham fullback Charlie Cooper’s runs down the right touchline a constant threat and Luke Slade got away on the other flank but lacked support in the middle. Visiting goalkeeper Dan Kempson turned a Flavio TAVARES effort none to convincingly round the post but the home striker had better fortune on the six- minute mark. A quick break and a superb through ball by Luke Bennett sent him clear and the cool finish gave Kempson no chance. Fareham twice gave the ball away carelessly at the back and survived a goalmouth scramble and were fortunate when Tavares chipped the advancing Kempson only for the ball to rebound off the post and back in to the keeper’s arms. There was a distinct contrast in styles with the home side trying to utilise their front men’s pace through the middle and Fareham playing down the flanks with crosses in to the box. A fierce shot on the turn by Josh Benfield was straight in to home keeper Steve Hodder’s midriff and the same player was denied by the keeper’s legs after forcing his way into the area. Blackfield lost Flavio Tavares to injury and Kempson was a little fortunate when he set off for the touchline in pursuit of the ball and the cross was cleared by the defence, before the keeper redeemed himself with a smart save from Tavares, and the half finished at the other end with Lewis Stockford seeing an effort turned round the post. HT 1-0 On the restart a superbly timed challenge in the area by Archie Wilcock almost certainly stopped the home side adding to their lead and a bizarre decision by the referee had the same effect. Tavares was bought down on the edge of the area; the ball broke loose and was turned past Kempson but as the ball hit the back of the net the referee whistled and awarded a free kick for the challenge. Advantage!!!!!!!!!! Another run and cross by Cooper saw a reflex save from Hooper and an acrobatic clearance keep the home goal intact with visiting skipper Gary Moody wide with a header from the resulting corner, Blackfield again came close to a second when Ali Zintany and Connal Morrison combined on the left and the cross to the far post was volleyed in to the ground and over the bar by Bennett. Fareham’s search for an equaliser came close to bearing fruit when Benfield forced the ball past Hodder only for a goal line clearance to prevail and the following corner saw a header cleared off the line, The now almost statutory five minutes stoppage time bought no further goals and the points stayed on the Waterside. Fareham may feel they deserved a draw but overall Blackfield had more up front and the sheer pace of their front three is going to worry a few defences. On the day Fareham Reserves scored seven so there are goals in the Club. Sadly, as on too many occasions last season, it was a game played in a highly acceptable spirit

with minimal dissent from the players or benches, yet there must have been six or seven cautions. Collisions do happen in the game – they are unavoidable. FT 1-0 Finally, nice to meet some friendly faces from the past, so to speak, and also former Chairman Ian Hoare, looking extremely svelte and well.

Division One RINGWOOD TOWN 3-1 EAST COWES VICTORIA A return to League action on a cool but sunny September afternoon on the edge of the New Forest. Early pressure came from the visitors and although Ringwood had a chance on ten minutes it was the visitors who took the lead writes Mike Robins. A miscue by keeper Liam Harris allowed Jimmi BURTON to collect the ball and take it round the keeper and stroke it home. Ringwood nearly levelled matters a few minutes later when Sammy Brown found himself well place but his strike was pulled wide. Ryan Hamm was also threatening to get Town back on equal terms, but they just couldn’t find that final touch. At the other end Ji Nash go to a long clearance first but failed to beat the advancing keeper and the ball went out for a goal kick. A penalty was awarded when Ringwood’s Harrison Clarke was fouled just inside the box, and skipper Ryan OSAMN stepped up to make it one each. There was a chance at either end as the half drew to a close; a clumsy free kick for Vics was easily claimed by Harris and a Hamm strike from 20 yards saw Steinborn-Busse turn thew effort round the post for a corner. HT 1-1 Ringwood were beginning to get on top and Vics began to lose their discipline and it was not really a surprise when HAMM netted from close range from a tight angle and just after the hour mark made it 3-1 with a 12 yard shot that slipped under the Vics keeper. Burton and Nash both had chances to get the visitors back into the game, especially a 25 yard free kick from the latter that flashed just wide of the upright, but otherwise the Ringwood defence held firm. FT 3-1

CLUB NEWS

A trip to Norway didn’t end well for Fareham Town midfielder Jack Breed. In the under-21 UEFA European Championship Qualifier, Gibraltar were on the end of a 6-0 defeat. Creeksiders’ Breed played over 80 minutes before being substituted. Former Brockenhurst signing Cecil Prescott was a used substitute in the same game. Josh Bertie of Andover Town was on target for the British Virgin Islands in their 1-1 draw against Eastleigh Academy earlier this week.

SOCIAL DISTANCING

Club officials – Covid Officer, Chairperson, Secretary for example, are requested to ensure that the guidelines on social distancing are observed at all times during their games and when they are not, clubs must take responsibility and appropriate action by requesting that spectators maintain safe social distancing. Disregarding and flouting of the guidelines places the safe return of spectators’ policy at risk and may result in reduced numbers or the behind closed doors policy being reintroduced.

WEEK 1 ROUND UP

Now the season is under way, we’ll revert to Week 1 for the Round Up. Please note that Neighbourhood Watch will be back next week, but Paulsgrove head the Hampshire Premier with six points from their opening two games, heading the table on goal difference from Infinity and Liphook United. Like us, the Dorset Premier League started their League campaign this weekend, and it is Blandford United who sit top of the tree after the one game, following a 9-1 win over Portland’s second team. Hamworthy Recreation and Merley Cobham Sports make up the top three. The newly named Wyvern League- the Hampshire Combination & Development Football League also got under way this weekend. IN the Premier Division Fareham Town lead Bemerton Heath ad Wimborne on goal difference. The East Division sees Tadley and Fleetlands at the top whilst in the West both Blackfield and Lyndhurst won 2-0 on the road and sit at the top in that division. Finally, perhaps some five weeks later than usual, the Wessex League got off the ground in these ”unusual” times with a virtually full League programme. Just one match was not played, the Division One fixture between Totton and Eling and Bemerton Heath, because of Covid associated reasons and we thank both Clubs for their actions and forbearance and trust all will soon be well. When we say there were some unexpected results in both Divisions, the statement is based on last season’s performances and takes no account of changes of personnel in the close season and no disrespect is intended in any form with any comments made. In the Premier Division AFC Portchester, many people’s favourites for the title, followed up their four FA Cup goals in midweek with three to start their League campaign in a 3-1 win over visitors Fleet Town. Lee Wort

opened his account, with the other goals coming from Joe Johnson and Steve Ramsey with Aaron Redford claiming the North Hampshire side’s consolation. Lymington, in turn, followed up their own FA Cup win with an impressive best of three goal victory at AFC Stoneham with Scott Hills scoring for the home side. Unfortunately, Lymington again declined to report their scorers. A much-changed Alresford side went down 3-0 at home to Baffins Milton Rovers with Tyler Moret, Josh Warren and James Cameron on the scoresheet and a lone Flavio Tavares goal gave the returning Blackfield & Langley all three points against Fareham Town at Gang Warily. There was just a single goal at Brockenhurst as well with Ronan Moore ensuring a home victory over Cowes Sports while it was honours even at the County Ground where Matt Neale gave Hamworthy United a half time lead only for Ash Pope to level things after the break.

Horndean were the top scorers in the Division beating Bournemouth 5-2 with Tommy Tierney scoring twice and singles for Bobby Scott, Robbie Taw and Miles Everett, Bournemouth’s goalscorers being Will Prior and Martin Warren. Portland did not have the best of close seasons and their woes continued with a 2-1 defeat at home by Bashley. Sam Clarke scored the home goal and the two Harrys, McGrath and Morgan, scored for the New Forest side who could be a force to be reckoned with this season.

In the north west reaches of the Division Shaftesbury made a good start with all three points against Amesbury, another side much changed from last season. Connor Millar and Aaron Laney scored the home goals and the Amesbury reply was an own goal. Lastly on alphabetical grounds to Tadley and another 2-1 home victory with Jordan Goater and Brad Neal scoring for the Barlows Park men and Ryan Wilkins getting Hamble Club’s goal in reply. Division One and a good start for Andover Town thanks to the Brothers Pattison. Adam scored one and Tom two to give them a 3-1 win over visitors Fawley for whom Ollie Bradley was on target. Something of a surprise at Downton where the home side, usually so strong at Wick Lane, went down 4-1 to Alton whose away form is often suspect. Tom Moseley scored the Downton goal with Luke Perkins (2), Liam Knight and George Bowerman giving the Brewers an impressive victory. Still in Wiltshire and the highest scoring game in the Division as Laverstock and Ford defeated US Portsmouth by the odd goal in seven. Some familiar names among the goals as well with Chae Sykes (2), Archie Lovegrove and Russell Jones scoring for the home side and James Franklyn, Dec Seiden and Frankie Paige replying. Andover New Street made it a double for Andover as a whole with a 2-0 win in the early kick off on the Island against Newport, courtesy of goals from Ally McCracken and Shane Lock, and Newport’s landlords, East Cowes Vics, also went down meaning all three Island sides lost. As per last season Vics travelled to Ringwood on the opening day and this time lost 3-1 – it was 4-1 last time. It was a case of the Ryans for the home side with Ryan Hamm scoring twice to add to Ryan Osman’s goal after Jimmi Burton had given the visitors the lead. A red letter day for Follands as they scored five for the first time since November 2018 and away from home to boot. Michael Wright and Jordan Sullivan scored for Petersfield but goals from Clayd Roach and James Thomson, who both scored twice, and one from Josh Ball completed the nap hand. Hopefully a better season in store for the Hamble based club and something to reward Garry Budden and his helpers for all their efforts in the difficult times. Romsey Town attracted the biggest attendance of the day and rewarded them with a 2-1 win over visitors New Milton. Jack Odam and George Callard with the home goals and a Ben Cooper penalty in reply. Lastly another 2-1 result – a popular scoreline overall on the day - as Hythe & Dibden got their season off to a good start with a win at Verwood. Edgar Zanin scored for the Potters with Ethan Anders and Craig Kingswell giving the visitors the points. Nearly all attendances reported on the day and a number of Clubs had some very useful figures. It is good to see so many Clubs advertising their fixtures on Social Media and hopefully they are getting some return for same. One Saturday down, a good few still to go.
