29TH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME

In today’s gospel we hear James and John ask to have the best seats in the house in God’s kingdom. Now, remember, this conversation takes place in the presence of the other disciples. Put yourself in the place of the other 10 disciples. What do you imagine went through their minds? After all, each one of the disciples had left their families, homes and work to follow Jesus. Did James and John think they were better than the other disciples? Or were they just trying to gain a higher position and also have more influence with Jesus?

The desire for power and status is an inherent longing in most human beings. Each one of us needs to know that we do have a certain amount of power and status. Power gives us some control in our lives. We also have a natural desire for the people in our lives to love us, care for us and admire us. However, we get in trouble when our desire for power, love or status begins to control us. This is why Jesus warns his disciples, that we are to serve others rather than to be served. We are to use our energy to serve those in need, rather than trying to land in first place.

En el evangelio de hoy escuchamos que Santiago y Juan le piden a Jesús darles los mejores puestos en el reino de Dios. Ahora, recuerda, esta conversación tiene lugar en p re sen c i a de l o s o t ro s discípulos. Ponte en el lugar de los otros 10 discípulos. ¿Qué te imaginas que pasó por sus mentes? Después de todo, cada uno de los discípulos había dejado sus familias, hogares y trabajo para seguir a Jesús. ¿Pensaron Santiago y Juan que eran mejores que los otros discípulos? ¿O simplemente estaban tratando de ganar una posición más alta y también tener más influencia con Jesús?

problemas cuando nuestro deseo de poder, amor o

estatus comienza a controlarnos. Es por eso que Jesús

advierte a sus discípulos, que debemos servir a los

demás en lugar de ser servidos. Debemos usar nuestra

energía para servir a los necesitados, en lugar de

tratar de aterrizar en primer lugar.

Creed

I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, (bow) and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. MASS OF REMEMBRANCE Wednesday, November 3 6:00 PM St. Henry Church November is the month in which we especially remember and pray for the souls of those who have been called by God into eternity. A Mass of Remembrance is being planned to remember and pray for the souls of those parishioners of St. Francis of Assisi who have died in the past year. If you have a family member who has died this past year whom you would like to be remembered at this Mass, please plan to participate. Names of deceased will be read during Mass, a candle lit in their memory, and the family members present recognized. Please contact the parish office (752-6278) or Deacon Tom Renze (752-2133) to be sure your loved one is included in the remembrance list. It would be helpful if you could let us know by October 30 if you wish to participate, but late notifications will still be accepted.

New Markers are $20 or you can "re-stake" a previously purchased MM for $10. Angel Baby Memory Lap will be at the Pond. Registration forms and MM order forms will be available next week. Those we love don’t go away. They walk beside us everyday. OCTOBER’S FOURTH SUNDAY COLLECTION Next week, a second collection will be taken for ACCESS. They provide support and shelter for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault in Marshall County. So far in 2021, the police department has investigated 322 domestic violence related calls. October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. It happens here. ACCESS is here to help. Thank you for your generosity.
